From Minnesota to Ethiopia: U.S. soccer star Fuad Ibrahim eyes Africa Cup of Nations chance

By James Montague, CNN

(CNN)
-- Life had not quite worked out the way Fuad Ibrahim had planned.
A few years ago the whole world was laid out at the 21-year-old American striker's feet. Ibee, as he is known by his coaches and teammates, was considered one of the most naturally talented players ever to emerge in U.S. soccer.
He was quickly brought into the national team set up, playing in every game at the Under-17 World Cup finals. At the age of 16 he was the second youngest player ever to be drafted into the MLS. Perhaps prophetically, the youngest was Freddy Adu, a name that has become a euphemism for talent unfulfilled.

Luck, nerve, injury, temperament: no one could explain Ibee's decline after being called up to the U.S. Under-20 squad. But decline he did as he went from Dallas to Toronto and then to his hometown club, the Minnesota Stars in the NASL -- the second tier of U.S. soccer. The decline appeared terminal when he was released at the end of last season..

And then out of the blue an email arrived from the country of his birth -- Ethiopia.
"It said that Ethiopia would like to invite me to play for the national team," Ibee told CNN, speaking from his hotel room in the capital Addis Ababa.

Yes….. Yes…… 2013 African Cup of Nations may certainly be a remarkable and decisive opportunity for Fuad Ibrahim to enable him reach at his favor dream (to be internationally famous professional player). As he is known by his coaches and teammates, in the US, and was considered as one of the most naturally talented players ever to emerge in U.S. soccer; I hope he can also be considered as Ethiopia's ever unforgettable hero of football, as long as he keeps on working hard and add more effort to what he potentially have as a football talent. By the way, language barrier is not a serious problem; so far no observed challenge is reported. All our players are full of courage with brave gut to win whoever their opponent team is. As stated in the above article, yes, it is true that Ethiopia had once been champions of Africa and also no one can deny that there were devastating series of famines and wars which killed millions of people in the 1970s and 80s. But it is not true to say “the Walya Antelopes came from nowhere to qualify for their first Africa Cup of Nations in 31 years". I do not agree with this idea. That is because, the opinion that the Walya came from "nowhere" is vague to me. Does that only mean the Walya’s football ability is shooting up in a short period of time? But, if it is meant that nothing was ever done to build the walya's as a competent team is totally unacceptable. As to my knowledge, a lot was done, at least by Sewinet and others to build this team. Dil Le Ethiopia Waliyaawoch!!!!

Hi,

Way to go Fuad and the rest who joined the Ethiopian team from abroad!!!

I hope that Fuad will serve as a beacon of Ethiopian nationalism to OLF in Minnesota who still cling to the made-by-Shabia fable “Oromia” thing.

Ethiopia’s Oromos like Lt. Olana Lemu (of Illubabor), Balcha Abba Nebso, Abdissa Agga, etc. are my heroes. Once, I watched a video broadcast of a meeting where Lt. Olana Lemu was saying something like: “Oromos never had any country or citizenship other than Ethiopia!” God bless him! He is the 21st century’s Balcha and Abdissa! I hope the Minnesota OLF will find that video and watch it!

Well, Ethiopians should ignore the comments from some rotten Bandas (Italy’s slaves = Shabia). They are no better than anybody declared “brain dead” for they don’t even remember the UN-led referendum where they voted overwhelmingly to be part of Ethiopia (under WW-II provisional British protectorate). It is sad that nobody is ever bent to destroy Ethiopia than ‘Eritreans’ (Bandas/Ashkaris/Slaves)! Unlucky Ethiopia!

So long!

@Ayalew Mognu, Sew Amagnu;

Fuade is a pure Oromian. He knows where his heart belongs. The fact that he is paying with the looser Habashas is not the love for the prison cell("Ethiopia"), but in search for some opportunities that might arise and benefit him from this tournament. Shut up your venomous mouth (Qomata tongue, the only thing you have) and keep begging as usual. BTW Olana Lemu might have a chicken head like yours.

FYI: your toy (Abyssinia=Ethiopia) WILL NOT win a single game, and don't dream advancing to the next round. It is going to be history after one week. Doma ras Qomata.

Impact: If Ethiopians people really failed to learn the impacts of war from the neighbour Somali, then go ahead, slaughter your people who already have been striving to escape from poverty, flow out from your country towards dessert, destroy your business, beg for others intervention and finally will end up with endless war. Is that what the good opposition fronts want and wish for their country? Is it really the leaders: TPLF/EPRDF addressed the causes and taking proactive actions?

Actions: I repeat again for Tplf/EPRDF that to increase integration and dignity by giving more freedom: speech, language, business, religions, culture. Reduce corruption, arbitrary exercise of power, students detention, and increase salary for leaders. Apply law of terrorists exactly where it should be applicable on real terrorists but release innocent politicians and journalists. Economically and technically emperor to youth to create jobs and employment opportunity at each regions equally. Strengthen a number of security across regions who immediately give feedbacks-this is a key for job opportunity, increases confidence of businessmen. Increase quality and quantity of accommodation for the University students on the campus. Open and establish Students Association and remunerate to the leaders of this association, then they can discuss openly their differences by themselves, then they can talk whatever they want independently, then get feedback or reports of the discussion and address it through training. Make students busy academically, which needs to be implemented by University Staffs.

I dont get it in ethiopian these habesha obviously don't like somalis people, they call us nomad, khat chewers etc but when it comes to europe or in american they like to live among somali people. fucking hypocrites

Both of you went too far……. to the extreme of developing unnecessary bias on those respected and genuine Ethiopian people, specifically, on the Oromos and the Amharas, respectively. Both of you guys are using negative, destructive, derogative and cursing words like “Galla” for Oromos and “Qomata” for Amharas, which is quite rude, unethical and is a sign of ignorance. You guys need to know that in any tribe or in any ethnically identified Ethiopian people there are both bad and good individuals. It is usual that there are both stupid/dull minded individuals like you, sorry to say it but I have to say it,and there are also superior/intelligent minded individuals who always advocate love, respec, patience, and propagate coexistence, equality and unity to flourish in a linguistically, ethnically and religiously diversified Ethiopia. People like Lt Olana Lemu, Balch Aba Nebso, Abdisa Aga, and many others for example like Habtegiyorgis(Aba Mela) and Gobena Dache etc who served the then of Ethiopian empire are historically considered as “hero” of course by many people (including by Ayalew Mognu too).

To the contrary, such guys ( the above mentioned) are historically considered by a number of Oromo elders and youngsters as Oromo betrayers. Ofcourse, they were evil servants, mercenaries or bandas of the naftanga (oppressing class of Ethiopian empire) of their respective historical era. They killed many innocent Oromos. Harma mura and Harka mura of aanoole(cutting of hands and breasts ) is an unforgetable historical fact that had happened during Minilik’s invention and expansion to the Arsi Oromos. For your information, many Oromo people identify such mercenary(banda) Oromo individuals as “Gobanas” or “koolugeltu”, which in Afan Oromo means “mercenaries” or “bandas”. In Amharic “wedo geba”, “adegdagi”, “kitirenga”, “le hodu yadere” maalet new. By the way, Ye minicheneqilat Ethiopia be mekebaber inji bemesedadeb befitsum atnorim. Orom proverb says “sareen badu baddi malee ija hin dhiqani” tirgumu…….. Wisha bitixefa ayinwa yixifa inji alaaxbaatim” maalet new. joroo yaalew yisma.

Fuad Ibrahim is one of the best Ethiopian football players. I hope he will do something shiny for Ethiopia. He is Oromo and also is proud of his beloved birth country/ Ethiopia/ whatever any loser talkative and chatty individual says, he is the hero. Good luck the Waliyas. Please, Ethiopians who are living in South Africa support your country team regardless of your political differences. Please, avoid distraction. Go…..Go…..the Walya!!!!!!!!!!!

Definition of terms

A. Woyane

I got definition of Woyane (You can Google for the standard definition established in a dictionary) which means rebellion. But the definition you gave me is different from what I gave you.

In your description, are you the one who sit with them (Tigray), or are they sit down with someone and gave their overall situation, and from there, was the definition you gave me finally established? Alternatively, is your definition based on the variety of ethnic composition among Tigre e.g. DNA, tribes?

I ask you the same question how this definition apply for AIGA, MORESH, and OLF, so then it is easy to conclude that these three are also them as asserted by "Ms Q"? Then, Tamrat Tamrat, you reacted with a question for the definition of "Woyane"?

Similar terms is introduced by someone above: how about the definition of "Qomata Amhara?"

Well, would you consider the following?

1. The case of Fuad Ibrahim has nothing to do with OLF, even if it shoud not be addressed the way you did. By the way it looks personal attack for reasons unknown.

2/ please do not use derogative terms like "Galla" and "Qomata Amhara" our respected ethiopian people so long as the people do not like to be called like that.

3/sport affairs does not have to do with poletics, therefore, do not mix the two.
/4 you said you are one of the people who worry for the well being of ethiopia. If so, start thinking how to convince people in a matured and intelectual way. Give them a chance to freely say any thing of ethiopian poletics they like.Think OLF members are Oromos(wether they are in a wrong or wright track). by the way I'm not either member or supporter of OLF, but I do not like the term "Galla" or "Qomata".

5/Nothing is impossible, you can debet to the extent of convincing and out-smarting on any poletical issues, instaid of provoking genuine Oromos to the extrem negative sides.Avoid your jimla chrash kuwankwa/kaalat/.

6/ start thinking poletical parties like tplf, olf, etc are only collection of individuals for a certain interest. The respected and vast ethiopian people are the broad view of the issue.

Good luck the Waliyas!!!!

....continued from "Ethiopia: A Time to Heal, A Time to Reconcile"

Dear Assta B. Gettu

Thank you again. I think that I explained above. That is it. Also I posted on similar responses under a topic to be discussed: "From Minnesota to Ethiopia: U.S. soccer star Fuad Ibrahim eyes Africa Cup of Nations chance". We discussed about the definition of "Woyane". However, my whole post was removed by someone for I know none reasons. Though I posted my response next to the question of "Tamrat Tamrat" who has asked me "why do we call them then Woyane!"

Is that possible to repost my answers by remover?

As to my understanding about current government of Ethiopia, I am one of a people who like EPRDF and each of its respective regional administrators: TPLF, OPDO etc. My main response is that this a regime who has brought some freedom relative to the previous oppressor regimes. For example, freedom of language for each region is a first in its kind.

Naturally I never hate any Ethnic groups irrespective of where they live. But real terrorists must be punished.

But mass media or human right watch has indicated that there are biased, corruption, arbitrary detention, misuse of terrorism law, religion and others issues in Ethiopia. I believe that this shall be corrected, or gov't can either disprove these allegations by using similar media for public views transparently. If there is false allegation against government, no one buy or sell the business of mass media because its credibility matters in market. Gov't needn't put them in jails but if any defamatory issues, they can file civil suit in Court for dispute, without gov't put people in jails. It will be good business: One pay, the other gets monetary rewards.

It is your view that Amharic is superior to others. My view is that all languages: Oromo, Tigregna, Afar are as important as Amharic language for many reasons I stated in our previous discussion.
No one deny that majority of Ethiopian believes in Christianity followed by Islam religions. Your argument is unfounded to suggest me as if I were a follower of the religion you stated. Even I can believe on whatever languages I like or none at all. Shortly, you don't need to speculate about my personal affairs.

I firmly confirm to you that Amharic language is not Christian religion. There are a number of Christian but their primary language is not Amharic. Nowadays since most people know that politics and religions are correlated, you don't need to tie Amharic language with religion for a rent. I assure that it would not pay any credibility. Take an example in the country you are living now. There are many Tiranga/Tigrie speakers, many Oromo speakers both came from Ethiopia, and both are Christian religion followers by their own language. Because they like or understand more their own mother tongue than a secondary acquired Amharic language for them or even they may not willing to speak it and no one force them to do it. This doesn't mean by any means that these people hate Amhara. The same for me!

I believe that EPRDF will strengthen decentralization and freedom: speech, languages, culture, religions etc, for which EPRDF are praised by Ethiopian because EPRDF is the first political institution in Ethiopia history who has started democratization in Ethiopia.

My statement throughout my life which is not related to the above discussion:
"Only ignorant hates others Ethnicity. Only evil ignites terrorism. Only doom insists to to give culture and linguistic without the will of the receivers. Only civilized and educated person supports freedom and multiculturalism".

Peace and development for the World.

Hi,

My goodness, I thought Nazreth is a genuine non-partisan Ethiopian public forum. I hope you will not remove this posting too. The one I posted yesterday was very important and very informative to Oromos. Imagine if each Oromo read that!

For those who addressed comments to me: I had no clue that Fuad is an Oromo (as you pointed out). It wouldn’t have made any difference to me. I only focused on Fuad’s being from Minnesota and wanted to capitalize on its positive aspect.

The last time I visited Minnesota, I came back with a negative image of the OLF in Minneapolis, St. Paul and Rochester. It polarized the Ethiopians and I hated the deep-rooted tension and division. It just made Ethiopia a sad laughing stock!

My home town is not better either. I hit a brick wall even trying to communicate with two OLF followers: one western-educated PhD mathematician (?) [Oromo from Wollega] and one female engineer (?) [Muslim Oromo from Harer area]. Their hatred disgusted me so much that I hated ever being from the same country.

Why try to impress Ferenjs with our kindness and hospitality when we are hostile to each other? Doesn’t charity start at home among us? Think about it!

So + long!

I have no clue what stand for the following terms:

"AIGA", "MORESH", "OLF", "Qomata Amhara".

Some clue shows you are expert to define it. Can you redefine it possibly by spliting each words or giving multiple definition for each words?

You are also local aspirants, but your approach is hihly questionable for locals. You are rather merely wanted to play between global and local situations. You wanted to cause conflict at local to keep your motives on stable moment or increase it. For this you balance or behave towards global!

On the other, you keep away global aspects.

Game 1: Without decentralization, your local motive will fail because you cannot crack all together. Rather you can advocate for integration of parts along with full decentralization.

Game 2. Your global keep way will fail, unless full merits of local warranted.

Your are tracked and now expected to respond how you can solve your games at optimal level.

Ayalew Mongu,

You better think further and deeper. Your problem is you think you know what is good/bad for others. Ethiopia is for all Ethiopians-- you and the likes of you are not the guardians of what is Ethiopian. There is no better or lesser Ethiopian-- slow down.

Here is a piece of advice for you and the likes of you: take a break mind your own business. Oromos (every oromo)know what is good and bad for him/her. Your patriotism; knowledge of and conviction for Ethiopia and Ethiopians is far too limited than you think it is.

That country would have been better off had it not been the idiotic yet fanatic views of your type.

Have you ever wondered why the OLF hasn’t liberated a single inch of land in its “30 years of Oromo liberation armed struggle” in a country that is almost 50% Oromo? Wonder no more!

1. The leadership is filled with “PhDs”, “engineers”, and crooks like the ones I
mentioned in my article above.

2. OLF takes history lessons and gets military training from Bandas (Shabia) in Banda Land (“Eritrea”). The Bandas don’t even remember voting in a UN referendum to be part of Ethiopia let alone memory of anything historic!

3. OLF supporters are Bichinchiru et al who raised funds for Shabia during the
1998 Badme Weyané-Shabia war by shining shoes along side Shabia’s
supporters in NY and DC. Bandas were killing his own Oromo brothers and
Bichinchiru was raising funds for Bandas! Isn’t that the worst kind of shooting
oneself in the foot? Ayadris new!!!!

Well, here is the rest of the Badme story: To add insult to the injury, Meles brought Oromo soldiers from the East, West, Center and South army brigades and put them on the front line against Shabia. Shabia’s supporters called these Oromo soldiers “Fenji Regach” [= land mine sweepers] when wave after wave of Oromo children were sent across fields mined by Shabia to see their demise!

What about the Northern Brigade in Tigray? Looking after Meles: It was patrolling Addis Ababa and the rest of Ethiopia. The only Tigré “on the front line” was the Weyané spoke’s person who was giving updates on the war from his luxurious office in Adowa.

As you can see, OLF, Shabia/Bandas, and Weyané are partners in crime against Oromos. You can’t ally with one to beat the other! You will just keep shooting yourself in the foot [and ask your foot to keep walking].

Result: Not a single inch of land liberated by OLF in 30 years of armed struggle.

So long!
