Israel gave birth control to Ethiopian Jews without their consent

Israel has admitted for the first time that it has been giving Ethiopian Jewish immigrants birth-control injections, often without their knowledge or consent.
The government had previously denied the practice but the Israeli Health Ministry’s director-general has now ordered gynaecologists to stop administering the drugs. According a report in Haaretz, suspicions were first raised by an investigative journalist, Gal Gabbay, who interviewed more than 30 women from Ethiopia in an attempt to discover why birth rates in the community had fallen dramatically.
One of the Ethiopian women who was interviewed is quoted as saying: “They [medical staff] told us they are inoculations. We took it every three months. We said we didn’t want to.” It is alleged that some of the women were forced or coerced to take the drug while in transit camps in Ethiopia.
The drug in question is thought to be Depo-Provera, which is injected every three months and is considered to be a highly effective, long-lasting contraceptive.
Nearly 100,000 Ethiopian Jews have moved to Israel under the Law of Return since the 1980s, but their Jewishness has been questioned by some rabbis. Last year, the Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, who also holds the health portfolio, warned that illegal immigrants from Africa “threaten our existence as a Jewish and democratic state”.
Haaretz published an extract from a letter sent by the Ministry of Health to units administering the drug. Doctors were told “not to renew prescriptions for Depo Provera for women of Ethiopian origin if for any reason there is concern that they might not understand the ramifications of the treatment”.
Sharona Eliahu Chai, a lawyer for the Association of Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI), said: “Findings from investigations into the use of Depo Provera are extremely worrisome, raising concerns of harmful health policies with racist implications in violation of medical ethics. The Ministry of Health’s director-general was right to act quickly and put forth new guidelines.”
Sound very true I heard rummer the same allegation for very long time I even remember when they dump Ethiopian origin jews blood to a garbage and I believe Zionist are allergic to everyone existence. Lets pray for peace for this plant with out Jews and Arab fanatic influence.
No wonder at all, it is an approach to take Ethiopian from peripheral areas and harnessing population growth by Israel. I was just yesterday night watching television channels. A Doctor was invited and interviewed at TV Oromiya about family planning. I was very shocked for he was convincing through the channel that taking of birth control increases women health because either through injection or taking tablets the Women get direct benefit from this medicine.
We assume that this Doctor was paid, though he is an Ethiopian but bladed head! What I fail to understand is why World are having different mission with various strategy to advocate for population growth to be restrained in one world and to be incintivized in another world.
A medication that prevents unwanted pregnancy AND also regulates menstral cycles. A lot of girls go on birth control JUST to regulate their cycles.
azeb mesfin I’m still a virgin and my gyno put me on it because I have heavy periods.. Well it really helped in that area, and it also made my boobs grow another cup size!!
The racist nature of the Jewish state is proven further although it is well Known to many. I wonder what the two Ethiopian Members of The Knesset are saying about this.
I want to hear professor Efrem, our good shimagile talk about the situation of The Falasha in the Holy Land.
Use a condom. The world doesn’t need another you.The human race is all the same when it comes to romantic relations,
Fake jews i’m telling you, if aliens landed on earth today and took a good hard look at why babies get born, they’d conclude that most people had children by accident, or because they drink too much on a certain night, or because birth control isn’t one hundred percent, or for a thousand other reasons that really aren’t very flattering.
MT [Mother Teresa] was not a friend of the poor. She was a friend of poverty. She said that suffering was a gift from God. She spent her life opposing the only known cure for poverty, which is the empowerment of women and the emancipation of them from a livestock version of compulsory reproduction.
1. a fancy was of saying murder, that left wing liberals fight desperately for to protect the women who become pregnant and suddenly decide that they want to murder the children growing inside of them (are you telling me that they didnt know when they had it?)
2. the second halocaust, killing millions of innocent children who will not live one day of their lives or say I love you to their parents to be who murder them
the nazi’s killed 6 million innocent jews. abortion has killed 8 times that amount
Azeb Mesfin sometimes I wish I was a Ethiopian jews woman, just so I could have an abortion
America and Europe faced with massive unwanted and undesired immigration could have resorted to certain form of birth control, but so far they have not. It is a matter of principle, faith and morality. There is no way that countries like Japan, Israel and Russia would let immigrants over populate within their country. The former members of U.S.S.R are exploding with ethnic birthing. Americans do not quote from Emma Lazaru’s sonnet, The New Colossus, anymore, where part of it famously read,
“With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
I hope something similar program will be done back home in Ethiopia. The population back home is not only growing but exploding like nowhere else in the world today. I will give you my own discovery that involves close relatives. 7 cousins I saw them marriage age young men I counted as single and no children in 1970 have now multiplied to more than 350(I got tired of counting) with majority of them having become grandparents. None of them also married more than one spouse at the same time. Something should be done to lock that productive incubator. One of my cousins has 12 children from the same wife and others ten, nine and so on. In such large family the age difference between the 1st and the last child is a mere 12 years. The least one is 5. I am sure such multiplication (from what I have read) is not confined to one area but rather it is an explosion happening in every part of the country. The population including Eritrea was about 22 million when I left and now it almost 5 times as that without Eritrea. That is just sick. The destructive mentality that numbed the men who go around saying ‘It is not up to me to worry about the fate and future of anyone of my children but it is up to God to chart their ways’. There is nothing available that can effectively cure such ignorance. One solution is empowering and protecting women. With the two dominant religions standing against any contraception, I think educating, empowering and then protecting women will do a lot to slow down this alarming population explosion. I think Israel, with its limited space, had no choice but to put a stop from an inevitable explosion from taking place. It is the right thing to do with no immediate option available. Once the stomach is full, you know what is next on the menu. Let’s go to bed and make babies!!!! That is why I am from the school of thought that advocates the empowerment of women in such societies and protecting them. Once the women are out of the house to become the bread winners of the family, then no one will be capable of telling them what to do with their body. Unless drastic action is taken to tackle such population explosion, this will be a recipe for untold chaos and bloodshed with people competing for limited living space available to go around.
@Ts….you sound seem like caring for the country which hasn’t been able to feed its own people. We citizen as individual are need to be acting responsibly. We have been hearing so much cry from many citizens and demanding the government to make fulfill the citizens’ needs. But my question for you is how much are citizens should be expected accountable for their action?
Poverty + No-Education + Backwardness = O v e r - p o p u l a t I o n. And more problems.
It is strain on government, strain on resources, and a strain on the environment. It is suicide. It is also sad that the countries who take care of their population suffers from zero birth rate while those who titilate between existence and non-existence multiply like cockroaches. The answers to such problems usually exist right under our nose. But nothing is possible when the governments are incompetent. Meanwhile China has set it’s sight on graduating 200 million college grads every year and dump them in Africa among other places. College grads will become the number one exports of China. Rival India would follow suit.
I forget to directly quote a brilliant saying but goes like “when a baby born, it posses not only stomach ,but also hands-the productive one.”
Here is a government action, for example China population and growth. You may say one child policy, yes after … there, but not elsewhere by themselves.
Ethiopian gov’t have many option to enable the country feed themselves: real training and education, industrialization and many subtle alternatives by setting aside theories.
Then it is bold enough to say that citizens would have been accountable being seen to fail in using a fit of jobs with resources. I afraid gov’t can bring an improved welfare by reducing population growth, even he cannot to the extent, otherwise there should be a system set that trade an economic rent between a child or work for a family. For example, Is there economic security or pension set at old age for a family? Is there enough security set for a weak family (who don’t have children or have few) in case conflict arises?
Is that birth control is the gov’t high technology, mechanization, financing, fuel and oil extraction, mining etc for what working for? Not at all. Why are students graduated from University remain unemployed (e.g. are they directed to practical education? are they mining? are they access to and equipped with technology? etc). Then finally, is that so to see the capacity of gov’t being limited by itself , and then to limit population or to bring a real shift of economic activity to the extent that labour shortage would be created with a reasonable real wages?
Notice also as China! People are helping in another country where Labour shortage exists. You may say again here that they are abused in Arab. Forget that and think in another round.
Most of the comments are racist and are anti Ethiopian. the article is about immoral acts at any standards happening against Ethiopian origin Jews/ these are Jews by the way/. Population is a resource. Ethiopia is not overpopulated but poor. Do you know that 61% of the land area hosts only 11-15%of the population? Do you consider differences while commenting about Ethiopia….reference about cousins, 22 million, government etc are bizarre references. Addis for instance grows below natural replacement rate? population growth in Afar…is just around 2. so why this all nasty anti-poor comments?
Women in the US take Depo-provera every day. There is no proven data out there that indicates Depo-provera causes permanent infertility however, it takes up to a year or more for the drug effect to wear off.
While I am not oblivious to the many discrimination that “Ethiopian Jews” face in Israel, this particular incident might not be what it seems. Besides, screaming racism at every real or perceived injustice is not going to help this people achieve the level of societal cohesion they need to advance in their new found homeland.

Return of fertility in women discontinuing injectable contraceptives.
Fotherby K, Howard G.
2 recent studies largely dispel concern about the restoration of fertility after discontinuation of injectable contraceptives. After cessation of use of depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) or norethisterone enanthate there is some delay in fertility restoration, but fertility is not impaired once the progestogen is cleared from the body. Pharmacokinetic data suggest that norethisterone enanthate exerts less of an inhibitory effect on the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian system than DMPA, so that ovulation returns earlier after discontinuation of the former injectable. There appears to be no significant difference between nulligravid and parous women in the return of fertility, indicating that use of injectable contraceptives does not need to be restricted to women who have completed their families. In Pardthaisong’s study of over 1000 Thai women, the median delay until conception after contraceptive discontinuation was 3 months among oral contraceptive users, 4.5 months for the IUD, and 5.5 months for DMPA users. 36 months after discontinuation, only 6.4% of the 796 DMPA former users surveyed had failed to conceive. In a smaller scale study by Fotherby et al, the conception rate among discontinuers of norethisterone enanthate did not differ significantly from that among nonusers of contraception or users of nonsteroidal methods once an 8-week period for the clearance of norethisterone from the body had elapsed. The mean time to ovulation is similar to the clearance for norethisterone; for DMPA, in contrast, the mean time to ovulation is considerably longer than that of the clearance. In discontinuers of DMPA, the mean time for the return of ovulation (210 days) is only slightly less than the mean time for the return of fertility (260 days). However, for norethisterone enanthate, the mean time to conception is about 170 days compared to just over 80 days for the return of ovulation.
