CHINESE RAIL IN ETHIOPIA TO REPLACE HISTORIC FRENCH LINE
DIRE DAWA, Ethiopia (AFP) - Camels rather than locomotives lumber over the railway tracks in this remote desert, famously traversed by storied French adventurers Arthur Rimbaud and Henry de Monfreid in the early 20th century.
The old French-built railway that connected Addis Ababa, the capital of landlocked Ethiopia, to the Red Sea port of Djibouti, is now being replaced by a Chinese-built electrified railway, a bold project that seeks to boost Ethiopia's commercial exports.
The new project also symbolises a shift in Ethiopia's international relations.
"You see nowadays that the dice are thrown differently. Chinese, Indian (and) Turkish interests are now taking over... times have changed," said Hugues Fontaine, author of the recently published book "Un Train en Afrique", or African Train, about the historic Ethiopian train.
Well, historic is history now! We just move on to the next level!
China rules the world!
Upgrading the railway is overdue and the type of investment Ethiopia needs. Displacing people from their livelihood and their land forever (aka land grab) in the name of investment is an insult to all Ethiopians most of all the people making these decisions.
The land grab deals must be annulled!!!
For good or bad, Christian Ethiopia must strengthen her relationships with Christian France rather than with Communist China or Hindu India. France, Great Britain, America, Germany, and Israel should be good business partners with Ethiopia. It will be a great mistake for Ethiopia to distance herself from these very powerful nations. The United States and France could arm Somalia to attack Ethiopia if Ethiopia ignores the west in doing business with them.

“It is better to stop the growth and transformation of the country than relocating citizens - let them live the way they lived for centuries - in total darkness.” Thank u but no thank u for ur advice. Go and do some research on the developmental history of great cities and highly developed countries.

We need those new electric/highspeed railways. It will further transform the Ethiopian economy in a big way.
Efficient transportation and access to goods, services, and markets is critical to any economy and Ethiopia has done a great job in developing these facilities in the last 20 years.
But the addition of the electric railway systems accross the nation will be a much bigger boost to the economy.
It is so nice that Ethiopia these days is becoming synonymous for building the first this and the biggest that! And just 20 years ago, we were the lowest this and the poorest that.
In what ways are you growing and transforming the country? by giving away land for free? do they use the produce to feed the displaced people?
” Go and do some research on the developmental history of great cities and highly developed countries.”
Why don’t you tell us about this great cities? may be even the land grabbing that took place while developing these cities?
you are allover the place but I will just wait till you give us your expert analysis…..
Come on dude! We are watching you. No side steps please. You’ve started the arguement why do you step aside and ask somebody to explain it to you?
You brought the idea of displacing people for investment bla bla… eventhough the title above is about railroad construction.
And some one confronted you how you’re wrong. And all of a sudden, as usual your keffo ras gave up and as if you know something you’re asking him to explain.
You’ve to tell us how you view the whole thing of investment could be bad. Don’t be shy dude. Blubbererrr LOL!
BTW, have heard of EMINENT DOMAIN?
I can see you running to your dictionary. HaHaHaHa!
Dont forget Christians Djibouti is a Muslim Country and the only outlet to the see.
Railyway projects are a huge investments that are way beyond the means of many underdeveloped countries like Ethiopia. Chinese investment in this electrified railway line might be the biggest investment it has ever made.
Transportation is the backbone of any country’s economy. Without such transportation especially for alandlocked country like Ethiopia(too bad)this railway link to the outside world is vital.Ethiopia should go to UN to reclaim Djibouti as it unjustly was given away after the lease-expired in early 70s. Like China claimed back Hong kong and Macau. One of Mengistu’s strategic blunders.
The Turkish high profile involvement in the economy comes with troubles. Apparently our corrupt officials don’t see it that way as long as they get kickbacks from huge contracts.
Ethiopian leaders are like prostitutes. Their decision is affected by who ever gives them more money. They do not see things from many perspectives. They are driven by their egos.
@Dawit, A Z MAN
I understand what MAN 4 U…. Saying and he make perfect senses to me…
I will explain
He was saying there are million poor Ethiopian build home on top on the old rail way track…
Yes u might say the old rail way is only half meter wide … That is not the point the important thing is the land that the rail way rest on
You might say the old rail way was on top on clif and mountain… Our Man 4 u answer for that too he want the new rail way company to feed the displace people…. But u might say the rail company doesn’t produce food…. That also doesn’t mater because our beloved Man 4 u want u to do some reasrch and come back to him…
Then u stop and say wait a second here what are u saying…. Mr. men 4 u, did people actually live on top of old rail way…. Even let even believe that doesn’t the train kill them
This is what happend when u opposed blindly…. I don’t even understand what land do u need for rail track maybe 2 meter…
@Assta B. Gettu
Do u believe in God?
Then does this God created
The christean France, Great Britain, America, Germany, and Israel only ( I am taking about the people the citizen)
My next question is did the same God created or other God created them
Communist China or Hindu India and the Muslim Arab
Ps:- by the way Israel are not cristean
What do u think we should not use Djoubuti port? Saudi investment that higher 400,000 Ethiopians… What should we do pls advice
Hey Agazi Ass Holes and Banda don’t you know ,the railway built by Chinese from Dire Dawa to Dewelle has been founded out of services the Next Day of its inauguration .By the way who is going to run this fake Company ,after the whole former local staff had been fired .Certainly Chinese workers ,as did your Kartury Masters by bringing 8000 pendjabis to exploit Gambella Fertile Lands .
There are rumors that the Agazi Bandits have asked the Chinese to recruit more Tigre and Amice guys ,so why the old Legehar area is more than ever invaded by Northern Peoples .And for the first time too ,peoples are seeing more and more the birth of slanting eyes babies….LOL !!!!!!The greatest joke the same thing happened during
Italian Invasions Too with Italo-Tigrai half cast babies…LOL !!!!!
Ethiopia should go to UN to reclaim Djibouti as it unjustly was given away after the lease-expired in early 70s. Like China claimed back Hong kong and Macau. One of Mengistu’s strategic blunders.”
Djibouti legally can’t deny us access sea port…land locked country can’t be refused access to port but if we start BS like Djibouti belong to us BS then it could be act of war and Djibouti can deny as access to port…
If Djibouti were under Ethiopia it would be like Ogaden with no investment and no school, or hospital… Now they enjoining trade with Ethiopia they rule themselves we also can integrate our two country relation by not requiring visa or work permit… If u are a business person and have many u could go and invest in Djibouti no body stop u so why are we want Djibouti under Ethiopia u don’t want to pay for port… That is money goes to Djoubuti development beside we have no freedom fighter from Djibouti so we are saving a lot of money that way… Life is good why are u trying to spoilt
the railway built by Chinese from Dire Dawa to Dewelle has been founded out of services the Next Day of its inauguration”
That was in 2000 that mean for almost 13 years we have no access to port Djoubuti because we only have one rail track… U told us it become out of service so Ethiopia didn’t export or import for 13 years…
If that the case I hope u support the new rail road or if u perefer franch to build it for u because u said the Chinese is low quality … The franch are ready to build the rail way all they want is the same deal like last time 99 years land lease I suggest Harar or Ogedan or ur choice… All they need the same deal like last time ur king of king give them
Even American and Canada doesn’t have electric train they still use old techolgy
This is what the Lord says:
“In the time of my favor I will answer you,
and in the day of salvation I will help you;
I will keep you and will make you
to be a covenant for the people,
to restore the land
and to reassign its desolate inheritances,
to say to the captives, ‘Come out,’
and to those in darkness, ‘Be free!’
“They will feed beside the roads
and find pasture on every barren hill.
They will neither hunger nor thirst,
nor will the desert heat or the sun beat down on them.
He who has compassion on them will guide them
and lead them beside springs of water.
I will turn all my mountains into roads,
and my highways will be raised up.
See, they will come from afar—
some from the north, some from the west,
some from the region of Sinim.”
Shout for joy, you heavens;
rejoice, you earth;
burst into song, you mountains!
For the Lord comforts his people
and will have compassion on his afflicted ones.
