Ethiopia to Open First Industrial Zone to Bolster Economy

By William Davison

Ethiopia will spend 900 million birr ($49 million) to open its first industrial hub for export- oriented manufacturers in a bid to deliver faster economic growth, Industry Minister Mekonnen Manyazewal said.

South Korean garment-makers are among companies in talks with the government about establishing operations at the planned site in the capital, Addis Ababa, Mekonnen said in an interview in the city on March 15. The facility is scheduled to open before the fiscal year ends on July 7, he said.

“This is one of the key strategies to facilitate and support foreign and domestic private-sector partners and particularly to enhance exports,” Mekonnen said. “It’s key for our industrialization.”

The economy of Ethiopia expanded an annual average of 10.6 percent for the eight years through 2011, double the rate of all of Africa, according to the World Bank. The Horn of African economy runs on a mixture of state dominance of large industries such as banking, telecommunications and power with private investment in manufacturing and agriculture.

Afar belong to Muslim Afars. Period.
Better treat those Afars equally. Else they might join Djibouti or create their own while Orthodox Shabia and Woyane fight on something they have no ownership title.

The industrialization zone is wrongly planned and sited. The capital city is the most populated areas where it should be free of environmental contamination that attributed to the proposed industrialization. The land around the city could have better allocated in expansion of sub-urban agriculture because the land is fertile.

Rather the industrialization site could be on the barren land areas, sparsely populated and geographically distributed: Western Hararghe including Afar, Ciro, Awash, Arba Minch, Gonder, Mekele.

In the 1800s, the British led the world in the automated manufacturing and production of steam engines, textiles, clocks, shoes and stoves. These industries were the fruits of the British-led industrial revolution and made Britain the wealthiest nation on earth – but from the outset American merchants were angling to best the British, and were quickly able to do so through a combination of stealing Britain’s industrial secrets, establishing tariffs to impede British exports to America, capitalizing on the benefit of rapid American population growth, and significant innovations of their own. One area of innovation was in labor. British manufacturers largely used child labor as famously decried by such writers as Charles Dickens. As early as the late 1700s, American manufacturers took a different path, quickly learning that “American farmers didn’t give up their children as easily as the British” and finding a solution by hiring whole families instead. In the early 1800s in Massachusetts, innovator Francis Cabot Lowell took it a step further. Fearing that Britain was teetering on the brink of social upheaval because of child labor, he paid higher-than-normal wages and created decent mill housing for young farm girls willing to work away from home for a few years:

“Lowell made yet another historically original contribution. Both he and [fellow merchant Nathan] Appleton had come away from their trips to Great Britain deeply disturbed by the human degradation in the great textile mills. They feared that Britain was teetering on the brink of social upheaval and did not want to replicate British conditions in America. They were also ready to pay higher than normal wages if they could get the assurance of a reliable work force. Lowell’s solution was to create decent mill housing for young farm girls willing to work away from home for a few years to earn their own cash stake – for a dowry, to pay for training as a teacher, or to help out the rest of the family. The hours were long but the work not too physically demanding, and by the standards of the day, the housing was spartan but clean. When Charles Dickens visited the new town of Lowell, the second great development of [Lowell’s] Boston Company mills, in 1840, he was deeply impressed, even moved:

‘I happened to arrive at the first factory just as the dinner hour was over, and the girls were returning to work; indeed, the stairs were thronged with them. . . . [They] were all well dressed: and that phrase necessarily includes extreme cleanliness. . . . They were healthy in appearance, many of them remarkably so, and had the manners and deportment of young women: not of degraded beasts of burden. . . . The rooms in which they worked were as well ordered as themselves. … In all, there was much fresh air, cleanliness, and comfort as the nature of the occupation would possibly admit of. … I solemnly declare, that from all the crowd I saw in the different factories that day, I cannot recall or separate one young face that gave me a painful impression; not one young girl whom … I would have removed from those works if I had had the power.

‘I am now going to state three facts, which will startle a large class of readers [in England] very much. Firstly, there is a joint-stock piano in a great many of the boarding-houses. Secondly, nearly all these young ladies subscribe to circulating libraries. Thirdly, they have got up among themselves a periodical called The Lowell Offering . . . [of which] I will only observe . . . that it will compare advantageously with a great many English Annuals.’

TPLF/EPRDF talks and talks about development. Opposition talks and talks about regime change. But there is neither development nor regime change. The people is in a tension between two propaganda’s.

Your explanation to Britain & American industrialization is very informative. I hope the government will have a lesson on it.

What did Woyane find to sell now? Ethiopia owns nothing in Ethiopia. Every thing is sold out to foreigners. That is what Woyane is leaving behind.

Every time EPRDF comes up with false economy bolster news accompanied by foreign investors thousands and thousands of Ethiopians life goes on jeopardy.

More land sold to foreigners and more Ethiopians thrown out of their homes, more families separated and forced to live on streets, more people forced to live by begging.

This is not good new to millions Ethiopians except the tiny few paid cadres and the elite EPRDF members and rules who are benefintig from this horrendous
act putting millions life in danger.

So far EPRDF has sold everything, including all breweries and manufactures that was by private and government entities hard work in pre-Woyane rule. Fertile land, humans life, companies and national treasure are on sale as well.

Enough with this kind of brutality. This abuse must be Stopped immediately.

THESE WOYANE SCUMS TALK ABOUT DOUBLE DIGIT GROWTH on the back of billions of dollars they beg and receive each year from the world bank, most of which ends up in the foreign accounts of the woyane ‘generals’ and their kits and keith. what they have is an aid based economy, which cannot sustain itself if food aid from USAID and others is interrupted or suspended.

People,

Halafi Mengedi is a Singqaporian with an identity crisis who would be the first one to visit Ethiopia if he had money or brains. Do not waste your time thinking that all Eritreans think alike ..because they think worse..Halfi Mengedi is a Sesame Street joke considered to the foul mouth Eritreans I have to hear all my life..because ,I am Eritrean.A BAD TREE CQAN NOT BEAR A GOOD FRUIT…
In the new, Post Bandit Eritrea (1991 - present)..Halafi Mengedi is one of the most reserved ,disciplined Eritreans I have witnessed.Your ears were strangers to you while those who were sucking mama Ethiopias milk were saying about you. It ashames me to tell you ,the best gift the ¨ኣስገንጣይ ወያኔ¨has given to Ethiopia is let Eritrea Go.
Eritrea was like the 9 year old daughter that wanted to have a tatoo or else..the Woyanes opted for the or Else.
Only woyane could make Eritrea by giving her w2hat she wants..& I am not necessarily speaking about economics.

Seattle,

You got your pipe clogged again.. eh? You are a totally screwed up little freak and I am tired of educating so many bums on this site. So, here is your lesson and don’t you ever forget it. Afar is Ethiopian. Asab IS Ethiopian. The Afar Muslims ARE Ethiopian. As all Christians/Muslims living in Ethiopia are Ethiopian, so are all other religion followers as well as non religious folks.

It is times like this and people like you that give reason as to why the Derg is given credit cause shitheads like you would never open their worm hole, ever again :>
