Ethiopia's ruling coalition completes transition after Meles

Ethiopia's ruling coalition re-elected Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn as chairman on Tuesday, completing a smooth transition after the death last year of his predecessor Meles Zenawi who kept a tight grip on power for 21 years.

Hailemariam, 47, was appointed premier in September, a month after the death of Meles, who was praised for steering economic growth into double figures but drew criticism from his opponents and rights groups for squeezing out dissent.

Meles's death raised questions about whether his Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), a coalition of four ethnic and regional based parties, would hold together or could come under strain as groups jostled for influence.

Opponents say there is infighting behind the scenes, but there was no indication of major rifts in the four-day meeting of the congress in the northern city of Bahir Dar. Some delegates questioned government policies before a 180-member coalition council voted behind closed doors for Hailemariam.

"The transition has gone smoothly - the first peaceful transition in the history of modern Ethiopia," said J. Peter Pham, director of the U.S.-based Michael S. Ansari Africa Centre at the Atlantic Council think tank.

This is so good so smooth so awesome transitions ever seen on the history of the country I mean on the pervious Amahara ruling government. But remember this is a EPRDF moment not the useless Amahara times. In other words,EPRDF doing this to just keeping the hopeless Diasporas crying babies shut their mouth off hahah kekeke.

What is Peter Pham talking about? Is this really what makes him an expert on Ethiopia, or is it because he has a foreign name and comes from 50 miles out of town? There is no peaceful transfer of power in Ethiopia. This is a transfer of power from one leader in a party to his chosen successor in that same party. If you can’t distinguish the difference, you are functionally illiterate, Mr. Pham!!

On a related point, wasn’t Haile Mariam endorsed by Parliament of the same party to be Prime Minister just five or six months ago? Why was it necessary for the EPRDF congress to re-elect him now? Didn’t the party elect him as Deputy Prime Minister at its last congress, and by implication as its chosen successor to the late Prime Minister? If you are having difficulty following this, you are not alone. That is why scholars have written over and again that the Constitution needs to be amended to clarify these issues. An edict from an individual is not enough to clear up an important matter of law such as this one.

Perhaps, as an expert, Mr. Pham should devote a bit of his time writing about that rather than the mythical ‘peaceful transfer of power’.

The report is wrong on the naming of political parties who are member of EPRDF.

“Four region-based parties make up the EPRDF - the Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), the Oromo People’s Democratic Movement (OPDM), the Amhara National Democratic Movement (ANDM) and the Southern Ethiopian People’s Democratic Movement (SEPDM).”

His Excellency Hailemariam D. was handpicked by the late PM not for his strength but for his weakness. He is very in decisive and easily manipulated by the clever Woyane cockroaches. They will keep electing him as long as he remains weak. If he becomes too challenging to the real power brokers of the Junta meaning for TPLF hooligans they will not let him last to see the next day light. The whole world knows this is the current reality in Ethiopia. I am beginning to believe that anybody can become PM if he demonstrates he is feeble and sloppy. HD happens to be a perfect example.

Mr. Pham…

You have been billed as the expert on Ethiopia. As a layman, let me introduce to you the following Ethiopian wisdom which aptly explains why the EPRDF congress felt it had to re-elect Haile Mariam as the Prime Minister: Yemayitemamen balinjera beye wonzu yimamalal! Please don’t thank me, however.

Wetu enewta, endewetahe yasqerehe, useless,…

Do you really have to cry bitterly like this? Atleast you need to try to hide your anger from the readers, and come up with a different style of showing your anger.
Ethiopian govt is not on the business of making happy Ethiopian enemies like you. If that was the case, we wouldn’t see the peaceful, developmental great nation of Ethiopia these days.
That is the point. When ever our enemies cry with what ever we did in Ethiopia, we know we have done the right thing for our country. Keep on crying, that’s what you’re supposed to do, and we will continue building Ethiopia.

Yeha [Visitor],

Ethnic haters like you are everywhere in this Eprdf govt. The amharas you and your bosses hate, made this country you and your corrupt ethnocentric Tplf mafia is embezzling. When the time comes and it will come, since no dictator holds power forever, your leaders will pay. Big time. As for this loser of a PM, he is reelected because he is a pu$$y. No backbone. He is a worthless piece of kaka who has no brain power to overcome the hold Tplf has on him. But you now have a dark spot on your shitty record here. Remember that you are a racist and a banda tplf chika ras. We can go to any level you choose on this hate you preach so that we can get you corrected.. cause if there is any kind of ahya I hate it is your kind.. a self contradicting Ethiopian ethnic group hater mehaym. Denkoro.

Yes indeed, this is another proof to the whole world, especially to those toothless enemies that Ethiopia is moving in the right direction…

Gragn Ahmed, the cyber cadre of terrorism preacher. How many time you need to be told that you will never ever achieve your evil dreams in Ethiopia?

Honestly speaking, the Ethiopian people don’t really care about who you worship or who you bend your a***s for, but you should know that the Ethiopian people will catch you and will give you the proper punishment whenever they see you acting up to please your masters…

God bless the world!!

Also.. why is it the Eprdf has all as representing their ethnic base but one ethnic group represented by a liberation movement? What is that? Are Tigrians waiting to be liberated and.. from whom? Your educated explanation to this will be much appreciated.
