For Immediate Release: UN Finds Imprisonment of Ethiopian Journalist Eskinder Nega Arbitrary under International Law and Calls for Immediate Release
Washington, D.C.: In an opinion released today by Freedom Now, the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention found the Government of Ethiopia’s continued detention of independent Ethiopian journalist and blogger Eskinder Nega a violation of international law. The panel of five independent experts from four continents held that the government violated Mr. Nega’s rights to free expression and due process. The UN Working Group called for his immediate release.
Mr. Nega is serving an 18-year prison sentence on terror and treason charges in response to his online articles and public speeches about the Arab Spring and the possible impact of such movements on the political situation in Ethiopia. Arrested in September 2011, Mr. Nega was held without charge or access to an attorney for nearly two months before authorities charged him under Ethiopia’s widely criticized anti-terror laws. This is the eighth time during his 20-year career as an independent journalist and publisher that the Ethiopian government has detained Mr. Nega. His appeal has been repeatedly postponed, most recently on March 27, 2013.
In the attached opinion, released in conjunction with an op-ed by the renowned Ethiopian opposition leader and former prisoner of conscience Birtukan Mideksa, the UN Working Group found that the application of overly broad anti-terror laws against Mr. Nega constituted an “unjustified restriction” on his right to freedom of expression. The UN Working Group’s opinion also recognized “several breaches of Mr. Nega’s fair trial rights,” further rendering his continued detention arbitrary under international law.
“The Ethiopian government cannot continue to use anti-terrorism legislation to muzzle the work of independent journalists, even when it does not like what is being reported,” said Freedom Now Executive Director Maran Turner. “The targeting of journalists by resorting to overly broad anti-terror laws, just like the use of anti-state charges in the pre-9/11 era, is a violation of the internationally protected right to free expression and undermines international efforts to address real security threats.”
Freedom Now represents Mr. Nega as his international pro bono counsel.
Freedom now, a group who claims to be a pro bono council to eskinder is violating international law by claiming as if they’re a UN affiliated org. What a fiasco.
Keep your opinion to yourselves. Ethiopia is a sovereign nation who have the right to protect its borders and the wellbeings of its citizens. You cannot tell us to sit back and watch terrorists like eskinder distablize our peace and stablity.
This guy should stay at where he deserve and belong for the sake of Ethiopia national interest.Until whenever he learn the ugly part of politician art and ask for mercy publicly he will get some kind of mercy only if he admit he was wrong and narrow mind nation national hater thats simple enough.By the way i’m not from Tigrai or EPRDF agent.
WHY only Eskinder Nega??????????
what about Bekel gerba??????????
what about Olbana Lelisa??????
what about Andualem Arage????
what about the rest of the journalists???????
what about the innocent muslims??
what about the poor oromo youth overcrowded woyane jail??????/ they don;t have voice because they are poor.
Al Bashir of sudan has promised to release all political prisoners and call all oppositions for reconcile, and he is leaving power 2015.
TPLF, the Tigree is already looted resources from the country and now resigning turn by turn from higher positions. They will be accountable though.
I don’t support or oppose a release of a journalist since TPLF released the Tigree only, 956 prisoners. But many politicians are suffering in jails. An international influences against the TPLF must move on this issue. A change must come.
International law… What about Ethiopian law? We will see who will have the last laugh.
Eskinder case handled by Ethiopia law.We don’t need any one opinion.
The guy is more useful as a fertilizer to Ethiopia than alive, just liquidate him.
why dont the government let the journalist to write anything without any limit including the advocating or disseminate the arab spring and let the people respond in either way.
@Addis zemen, ya one of your type agames bent over for you but your merely response was to bend over for him too. What a shame!!!
Why do we need jail? If u can’t put criminal in jail… Why not open the jail door let loose all murderer and rapest as long as our human right organization singn to take any responsablty we an open the jail see what can happend
We shouldn’t give any armed protection to NGO and human right group to they themselves want to be protected from criminal but when Ethiopian people want to protect themselves from criminal they say human right so every one is equal… No armed security guard for human right group in Ethiopia let see how they will handle this one.
Eskinder is a convicted terrorist who has been funded by worlds most wanted terror organization like Abebe gelaw
He should be put in a death row.erhiopia will destroy all of the terrorist cells around the corner.
The jail in Ethiopia is a cage for politicians and not for criminals. CRIMINALS who chase behind the innocents, and the Corrupted government who takes bribery are governors.
I feel very sad for Eskindir’s long imprisonment. But why do many medias speak about him only while there are so many journalists and other peoples imprisoned because of their different political opinion. Though I appreciate the call, I highly found it too much partial. I doubt it is from UN. I see it just from friends of Eskindir. I have a message to Nazret.com to disable the comment. It is the source of division, so ugly to see some comments, so rubbish. The comments in one way or another affect all of us. I found it as an insult to all Ethiopians. It gives an opportunity to some people who have dead conscience to vomit upon it. And some of the news you upload are also nonsense. Please use your minds. May Ethiopia and all Ethiopians be blessed.
The conference as uual, was long on empty promises & desperately short on substance. The lack of good governance was voiced by some delegates. It’s the tip of the iceberg. Theses people are all deeply embroiled in the culture of corruption that no one is willing to do what it takes to deal with it. You bring down one all of them would come crumbling down like a house of cards. They have no choice but stick together and go down together in disgrace.
They pat eachothers’ back at the end of the conference for accomplishing practically nothing but pledging to do everything.
What’s remarkable in this conference was the departure for good from one-man show of earlier conferences where you see the chairperson flew in rage when criticized. He thought himself as infallible.
to the current topic,
All that is needed is “letter of pardon” written by his jailers and signed by him. The tried and tested face saving method for his jailers. They would revise his charges and reduce his sentence to few months. The judges wouldn’t care less one way or the other as long as they carry out the orders of their political masters.
It, the regime, can’t ignore indefinately the calls from their benefactors.
Thank you for sharing information. This conference show us that EPRDF is a solid and reliable party to world.
