Ethiopia could be shoemaker to the world
BY ELISSA JOBSON
HELEN Hai, GM for overseas investment at Huajian Group, a leading Chinese footwear manufacturer, has a bold vision: in 10 years she wants Ethiopia to be a global hub for the shoe industry, supplying the African, European and American markets and providing jobs for more than 100,000 local workers.
"We are not coming all the way here just to reduce by 10%-20% our costs.… Our aim here is in 10 years’ time to have a new cluster of shoes making," Ms Hai explains. "Definitely we want to build a whole supply chain … I want everything to be produced here."
Last January, Huajian signed a memorandum of understanding with the China-Africa Development Fund, a private equity fund that facilitates Chinese investment on the continent, to jointly invest $2bn over a decade in creating a light-manufacturing special economic zone in Ethiopia.
It is impressive start with our number 9 stand on cattle number. But it remains to be seen how cost effective it will be. Chinese need some tax break I believe.
Al Amoudin leather factory needs to work with them.
Yes, we can as long as we keep up with customer demand.
Good, Ethiopia moving forward unlike some diaspora…
Toxic Extremist Diaspora…? Haven’t had time to get some negative vibes going… Let me give you some pointers
1. It is the TPLF/EPRDF’s fault that Ethiopia is making shoes which are for the feet… If it wasn’t for them we would be making hats and we know that the TPLF is building underground hat factories in Tigray…
2. If free market was allowed and the economy was managed properly we wouldn’t need to waste money investing in factories. The cows themselves would have started to make shoes….
3. The shoes produces by by these factories uses twice as much leather as normal shoes. The Chinese are taking the shoes and reassembling them in China to make 2 shoes out of one. TPLF is loosing billions of dollars from taxes because it is getting money only for 1 shoe..
Fools and Idiots…
If it does not include EFFORT in the profit sharing scheme, help the local economy, and help long term technology transfer then I am for it.
How about using the loud mouth dedebit cadre’s skin for shoes? It has dual purpose. It will generate income for local economy and save the Environment from the waste.
Mr. Fool and Idiot ,for your Information the owners of the Shoe Factories are the CHINESE .While the
Ethiopians are simply ENSLAVED WORKERS !!!!!

For the Fools and Idiots [Visitor] ,
Look at this way: The despot who said F&I is gone forever at doddering age of 57, (the average life expectancy of Ethiopians is 48).
Ambassador Rice, the real fool & idiot, who echoed it was the
sacrificial lamb for her boss’s re-election.
Who had the last laugh, cadre?
TEDDY and MesfinB are you two for real.
teddy: do you rather see ethiopians work for lower wage (slavery) or spend their time idlying and chewing chat?
mesfinb if ethiopia is doing today what china was doing 30 years ago, how is that bad?
what is amazing is its people like you that makes this government look smarter than it actually is, some times i wonder if that is not your goal.
Belay ,it"s not just because they are poor that peoples have to be mistreated .Of course Ethiopian Workers deserved too the proper wages ,permeting them to have decent lives with the means to feed they and their families .
For the Fools and Idiots and lij
Can you tell us how much money the shoe factory brings to Ethiopia and compare that the remittance money coming in from “Diaspora"?
We dead brains how about you multiply it by hmmm….let us say 100,000,000?
Looks to me like diaspora is also feeding your parasite families too….
So much for your empty bravado..and despise of diaspora aka.. Ahmara, gurage, oromo, etc..people…
Ethiopia is moving forward despite the ethnic based parasite group TPLF losers like you! get the hell out of my country!!!
I don’t know one million Ethiopian living America own their own taxi, parking lot and all the factory , gas station and hotel that they work …
U work under American, Indian and Chinese ownership in America then what this the diffrent Ethiopia work under Chinese ownership in Ethiopia.
Amaras&Oromos working for few birr a day and no share in supplying leather while Chinese own the factory and Woyane get paid for selling slaves and resources.
Woyane divided our country into its fake ethnic zones where no single person owns land.
The whole Ethiopia’s land becomes Tigray’s zone by controlling land and resouces. Every resource is owned by Tigrayans and everything goes to Tigray.
Now we see it naked what Meles had planned for Amaras and Oromos. Suppliers of resources and labor living as slaves in our country.
The gruesome ugly ethnic cleansing crime that is being committed by Woyane and its collaborators, Hailemariam Desaglen and Shiferaw Shigute on Amaras speaks for Woyanes intention to push Amaras and Oromos followed by every non-Tigrayans into extinction.
Thousands and thousands of Amaras, women, children, elders and sick got beaten, pushed off and forcefully evicted from their homes while foreign land grabbers advanced behind the eviction and money is being transferred into Woyane’s bank account. .
Few day ago the Saudi Prince, Khalid Bin Talal and/or Mohamed Hussein al Amoudi acquired more fertile farm land by paying Woyane thugs around 3 million dollars.
To the contrary, my friend we are rolling downhill into an economic abyss. Those Chinese who were fighting westren imperialism a good 60 years ago are now the new “state capitalist” nation. They are gobbling every mining place from north to south, east to west. Please don’t be fool when they shed their “Crocodile Tears” . A couple of centuries ago the Europeans came with “Bible” as peace loving people. We all know what they did to the rest of the world.
I would be much happy if the Chinese treat all workers in Ethiopia fairly. To expect such fairness at the expense of thier “profit” is being foolish!!!
What’s your point really??
What if the owners are chinese? These people brought their own money to invest son! If they can meet their ten years goal and create 100,000 jobs, that will be impressive by any standard!
You are merely a slave here in America or in Europe. I don’t know why you think you are any better. You maybe getting paid in dollars. That’s the only difference my frined. You people always try to make it sound like working in a factory is something horrable. When all those Europian and American companies moved to China, the Chinese benifited a great deal and, now it’s our time to get on that wagon and grow our economey.
I don’t know how many people live in one KEBELE but, creating 100,000 local jobs will only help the economy and put food on a table in many homes.
The Chinese worked so hard to get to where they are at today. Had been a subject of so many jokes but, who’s laughing now???? America will never be capable of paying off what she owes to China in near decades.
Both foreign direct investment(FDI) and remitance are important to any country but FDI is more important than remitance.FDI help for technology and knowledge transfer from one country to another, create job and increase competition ,increase government income due to tax whereas remitance is one source of inflation .Moreover, create dependency feeling on citizen.
@For the Fools and Idiots
There is no better way to describe the toxic diaspora than what you have done!
Ethiopia is prospering and shall continue to prosper!
” However, Huajian has faced considerable obstacles over the past 15 months. The cost of transportation to and from landlocked Ethiopia is just one of the problems. For every 12 containers shipped, eight containers are imported at a cost of $8,000 each, which adds an additional 6% to freight expenditure compared to Huajian’s Chinese operations.”
The late PM Meles Zenawi will be remembered in history books not for trying to lift millions of Ethiopians out of poverty, but for making Ethiopia the most populated landlocked country in the world.
Your response to teddy
There is everything you don’t know. Just because you are ignorant doesn’t mean it is not true.
The problem is you probably believe in what you blab unless you are the biggest liar Woyane cadre.
For example, If Teddy worked for Americans in America it is because he is in America away from Ethiopia, his country. America Natives and Citizens hiring immigrants in America is perfectly normal. But what is not normal is foreigners hiring citizens and citizens deprived of opportunity like in Ethiopia. It is unacceptable practice in every country unless we live in your traitor world.
No Chinese or Indian nationals are allowed to come to the US and hire American citizens and export goods to China or India. In America citizens are respected and protected.
Making and selling shoe is a very old technology. Have you heard the name Darmar? Ethiopia has been selling quality equivalent to Italian made leather shoes centuries ago and way before you came to see shoes for the first time.
It is for people like you selling Chinese made shoes becomes totally new. Now you are exited and overjoyed. Calm down.
Chinese were not wearing shoes when we made them. Their feet’s were soaked in rice field earning half a penny a day. We could have conquered the world in selling shoes if it were not for backward hater people like Woyane.
