The one-man-band futurism of Ethiopia's Hailu Mergu

The latest title from the wonderful Awesome Tapes From Africa label—the imprint run by Chicago-area native Brian Shimkovitz, born a couple years ago from a blog of the same name—was actually recorded in the U.S. Shemonmuanay was cut in Washington, D.C., home to a massive expat Ethiopian community, by keyboardist Hailu Mergia (it was billed to him and "His Classical Instrument")—although it was released back in Ethiopia, where it became a big hit for the Kaifa label. It's a strange album, a low-budget one-man-band project that at once harked back to the golden era of Ethiopian popular music in the 70s, when a rash of state-sponsored bands fueled the nightlife of Addis Ababa, and presaged a future of automated electronic instruments replacing real musicians.

Wow, what a loser banda you are. That sounds very jealous!! I can’t believe that there are people who are mad about anything positive that happens in Ethiopia. Teddy is a great singer. But I bet you are not an Ethiopian. I know your poor psychology.

C’est moi senait: Bado trash, read again what you commented and what is reported. You were fortunate to have the best musician Hailu Mergia, otherwise you were lost in the ditches of Addis.

Senait well put about Hailu’s timeless music during those horrible years, but why bashing Teddy Afro like that puzzles me.I am sure Hailu admires Teddy.Unless you are woyanai who is busy inflicting wounds between generations.

I am sorry to say this about my City but all i see a fake growth in Addis particularly the so called “high rise” building blah blah, so substandard! badly built, bad finishing no sewerage system in place and no insight to the future. It ridiculous that the government cannot even enforce the basics like parking and green areas. The people who need to run should be those with exposures and not those who have no exposure whatsoever and just a 4 or 5 story building mean a lot to them. The rest of the world is demolishing building and building a new once and we are here building a city and not getting the basics. And yes, i am not Eritrean!

One of Ethiopians famous singer used to be a member of ETHIOPIA secret SOCITY ( KEBRA אagas). There are few of them left. I know some one who is now in top position in Canada, used to come to LaGare club where they occasionally had a meeting and play Bulls in late 80s .
