Ethiopia sees Muslim anti-government violence during holy period; threats of protests on Eid

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia
— Anti-government Muslims in Ethiopia on Monday called for mass demonstrations to be held on the religious day of Eid al-Fitr later this week to protest the arrests of 28 people on terror charges.

The calls followed a weekend of violence in which three people were killed after security forces clashed with what police labeled Muslim “extremists.”

Hundreds of people held rallies near mosques in the capital, Addis Ababa, and some regional towns on Friday and Saturday.

Police in the Oromia region said some protesters fired guns at police. The state news agency said all three killed were police officers and that 11 people were injured during the hours-long unrest. Muslim leaders, however, said that police stormed a peaceful protest and killed about a dozen people.

Some in Ethiopia’s Muslim community — about one-third of the predominantly Christian nation — have been protesting alleged government interference in religious affairs for about two years.

The Muslim protesters accuse the government of unconstitutionally encouraging a moderate teaching of Islam called Al-Ahbash. Other protests have also turned violence in the past.

Rights groups and the U.S. Commission on Intentional Religious Freedom blame the government for the ongoing tensions with Muslims.

Most of the protest leaders are now behind bars and face terrorism charges. In December, 28 activists pleaded not guilty to the terror charges. The trial has since then continued behind closed doors with the press and family members denied access to the proceedings. Defense lawyers say the court is yet to deliver a verdict.

During the latest protests at the Grand Anwar mosque in the capital, some shouted slogans demanding the release of the activists.

“The illegal activities are being spearheaded by few Salafists who have been plotting terror attacks including the killings of religious scholars,” the country’s federal police said in a statement. “The Ethiopian government and Ethiopian people will continue to work together to protect the peace and stability of the nation that enjoyed religious tolerance during its long history.”

It is a serious issue of extermism. Islam has evolved in many part of the world including and specially in the moslim dominated countries to be a serious security problem. If a religious teachings has such flaws which is a threat for a peaceful coexistance of a society, it must be reformed or abolished. The saddest thing about this is that muslim extermism is specially attacking pockets of societies which are known for the peaceful version of Islam, with probably the most authetic form of islam like that of Mali. As of Ethiopia, I am sure Ethiopia can contain these threats, not through “democracy” or special laws but through Ethiopian common sense and centuries old experience and confindence in Ethiopian way.

Muslim extremism is not only ethiopia’s problem.
As we’ve seen, the US has to close a number of embassies through out the middle east and Africa, because of security threat by alqaida lead terrorists, the same as the Muslim extremists in Ethiopia who are trying to start a copy cat chaos and unrest seen in Egypt and Syria.
Our govt will do whatever it takes to stop these fanatics and vagabond losers from dstabilizing our country.
It is the people’s demand. And the authorities and the law enforcement agencies have the people of Ethiopia behind them.

I would`n surprised if the so-called habesha opposition groups, intellectuals and philosophers, who were cursing, fainting and wailing for regime change day and night in the last two decades either condemn and side with woyane killing machine or withhold their moral from such noble and peaceful demo against the ruling Tigrian Mafiosi. I`m not talking about the usual suspects of religio-ethnic fascist of cadres like Addis Zemen and foul mouth Ass Goittu the bi..chy debtra.

The million dollar question now is if that happens, and it will happen soon, what it tells you about the sincerity of the much-vaunted equality of various nationalities and future pluralistic democratic aspirations of country. Now, let the Nazret unleash the mad dogs and see what happens.

Here is a statement from Oban Metho (Directory of SMNE) on the killing of innocent civilians by the brutal regime in Ethiopia.
According to eyewitnesses, the TPLF Special Forces called AGAZI murdered innocent peaceful Muslim protesters today in Ethiopia and arrest many more. We in the SMNE are very concerned and are watching the situation very closely.
Are these all signs of desperation on the part of the TPLF/EPRDF as they try to crackdown more harshly on the people who are being pushed to their limit? Are they losing their grip on the people as people begin to feel they cannot take it anymore? It is not only in Addis Ababa, but we are seeing similar protests in the North, with Muslims demanding religious freedom for all in the South, in Afar where the people are experiencing much the same of what is going on in Gembella, in Benishangul-Gumuz and in the Ogaden.
We in the SMNE strongly urge human rights organizations and especially donor countries, who are keeping this regime in power with aid money – hoping to prevent the disintegration of a country by doing so – to now act. It is the time to personally call on Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn to tell him to stop killing the innocent people of Ethiopia. We doubt he will listen closely until the people of Ethiopia make sure he has no option!
May the God of justice defend the people and the precious land of Ethiopia as Ethiopian stretch out their hands tom Him!

Obang Metho
Director of Solidarity Movement for a New Ethiopia (SMNE)

salh mohamed, there is no use fighting against EPRDF who has already convinced most Ethiopian by working hard to eliminate poverty and proved it by handing its power to any Ethiopian who believes in Ethiopia’s development. Our problem is some people who are using their power for their own benefit. Such people were during King Hailesilasse, President Mangiest and at present with EPRDF.
EPRDF has to be supported in order to control such people, who are members of the party but who practically works agents it. Such people are the enemy of the people. Such people are the one who are chasing us out of our country. In addition there is no need of organizing people by religion. Religion is belief, and it needs to remain like that in order to be respected by any religious person. Using religion for political power brings disaster to everybody. If you are politician bring your relevant, convincing aide to the table for discussion. Personally, I think it is better to modify the rules that are not liked by the majority, and to work towards our unity by eliminating ideas that encourage ethnic based conflicts. Some ideas from the United Ethiopian Democratic Party should be encouraged to modify ethnic based politics. I think what we need is the development plan of EPRDF and the unifying idea of UEDP.
Ethiopia Tikdem.

It is not a coincidence that these demonstrations has intensified since Ethiopia announced that it is building the Renaissance dam. They are planned and coordinated in Arab countries. As usual they provoked the authorities and some were arrested and uses this apparent excuse to demonstrate weekly. If the government releases these Jihadists they will find other reasons for their intifadas. In the end muslims will lose. The highland Ethiopians are warriors and devout Christians and provoking them is futile attempt at suicide. Islamic fundamentalism flourishes under democratic guise while their aim is to install Islamic republic under sharia law. They don’t care if we are majority Christian country, they always believe that they will outbreed us or convert us or kill us. So, don’t tell me about democracy you aspire of, I only wish the government was harsh enough on you spies of foreign governments.

I urge the Ethiopian government to free all jihadists and deport them to their home nation; a sharia compliant nation or fried them like Kentucky Fried Chicken.Keeping them in prison longer create more problem to the country.
