Ethiopia: Abebe Bikila honoured with a Google Doodle

Ethiopia: Abebe Bikila honoured with a Google Doodle

Source: bizcommunity.com

Ethiopian marathon runner, Abebe Bikila, who was also the first sub-Saharan African to win an Olympic gold medal, has been honoured with his very own Google Doodle to celebrate what would have been his 81st birthday today. Bikila passed away at the age of 41 in 1973, and was proclaimed an Ethiopian national hero

Bikila beat competitors in the 1960 Summer Olympics marathon, barefoot - the way he had trained for the race. He won in record time, finishing 25 seconds ahead of race rival, Rhadi.

In 1964, he made history again, breaking the world record for the marathon, coming in at four minutes and eight seconds in front of the silver medallist. He was the first athlete in history to win the Olympic marathon twice.

"I wanted the world to know that my country, Ethiopia, has always won with determination", he said.

Ed's Note:

Abebe Bikila's Google Doodle was targeted at visitors from the following countries: Côte D’Ivoire, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Togo, Tanzania, South Africa, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Rwanda, Gabon, Mozambique, Uganda, Namibia, Kenya, Niger, Malawi, Zambia, Nigeria. Google should have made it Global

Watching Abebe Bikila in black and white slow motion in Japan’s national tv in late 80 makes me how proud one true and pure Ethiopia made us. The Japanese thought their athletics from his every step in slow motion where they studied in years ever single inch how he put his feet on ground, how he lift them and so on… They say, he never put all his energy on ground but he is like a bird who touch the ground and lift it in less than a second. They even say he never land his all feet on ground but his forth feet touch while flying like a bird with the other one. Japanese has now many women runners who followed his step. Try to watch it if you can…

Abebe Bikila was a GREAT ETHIOPIAN.
He was a family friend. He was humble and showed respect to everyone. He helped the poor.
I remember sadly when he had an accident driving around ‘Eri Bekentu’ he got out without a scratch.
RIP Our friend.

UNLIKE SOME FOREVER DEDEB HUMANS, HE PROVED HIS GREATNESS BY HIS ACHIEVEMENTS, NOT BY BLUBBERING ABOUT ETHNIC GARBAGE.

HE WAS AN OFFICER IN ROYAL GUARD REGIMENT, AND DOUBLE OLYMPIC CHAMPION!

was making his evil speech .Unfortunatly today insulted by the own descendants of Musolini Bandas and Clerks as a cheat of

I had a Japanese roommate while in college. When her grand mother herd I was an Ethiopian She wanted to meet me. The firs thing she said was Abebe Bikila. She spoke highly of him. She said she was among the people who watched him run bare foot on the street of Tokyo. All these years later, she talked about him with excitement and great admiration. This was in the mid 90’s . I was proud of him before but that day I realized how extra ordinary thing he had done for us Ethiopians. I wish we put a big statue of Abebe Bikila in the middle of Addis Ababa. And name some of the avenues in his name . He deserves More than that.

It is a pity, that our own country do not honour its citizens who put Ethiopias name on a world map with dignity. But others gave Honourable Abebe Bikila a platform to put his name on a historical and membrable place. we need to honour our heros, aside any tribal difference and lets do the honourable thing. Please watch the Wimbildon Open for the 2013 the opening ceremony, how they begin the ceremony by naming and cheering their Olympic and Paraolympic heros. Lets give respect to our heros, sportspersons, singers, Korean and other veterans and even for that matter Col Mengistu H/Mariam for beliveing in Ethiopia’s unity despite its unwise war. We need to respect our heros, asiding favoritism in tribal belonging.

Ewunetu Yewta ,because you want the Naked Truth concerning this Great Hero .Abebe Bikila own mother did testefy in 1951 that the real Father of her son was not Ato Bikila .But another man called Demisse .Once a Time ,being in qjarell with her husband she went to live with the man called ato Demisse .Abebe had taken the name of his step father because of his eldest brother ,who made him engaged in the Imperial Body Gard Army by making him register by Abebe Bikila instead of Abebe Demisse .Even one day he was put in custody because when he was in service at the gate of the First Division Gate
he represented himself to his Commander as Abebe Demisse forgeting he was registered by Bikila .But later fred after the Explaination of his Brother .The question is whether Abe is a pure Amhara or Oromo ,but afterall what really counts that he had never considered himself being from this or that Ethnic Group ,but a Patriotic True Ethiopian .So now you have found out the Truth ,are you going to treat him as Amhara Neftegnia….LOL !!!Afterall Haile had always given him all the Honors that he really deserved .
