For Ethiopian Women, Construction Jobs Offer A Better Life
Earlier this summer in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, I heard a complaint from many professionals that they could no longer find cheap house cleaners and nannies.
The apparently endless supply of girls and young women from the countryside who would work for peanuts just for a chance to move to the capital was drying up. It turns out more and more of them are finding work on one of the city's many construction sites.
Unlike her male coworkers, Mekedes Getachew does not wear a hard hat, but instead sports a bright purple headscarf with tassels under a newsboys cap. She says a hard hat is just too heavy.
The 19-year-old Mekedes is one of six women working alongside 60 men at a construction site that will next year be a new wing of a city hospital. She wears a paint-spattered sweatshirt and a skirt over her jeans, a nod to her Orthodox Christian upbringing.
Today"s generation Ethiopian youth seem very ambitious and hard working.
Do they get it from their fore fathers? No way! We Ethiopians by nature are laid back and take it easy people.
For sure it is from the leading party EPRDF, especially our late PM the great Meles Zenawi’s ambitious plans and goals were what made us achieve all we see in today’s Ethiopia.
PM Meles was a genius and brilliant leader whom you see once in a millennium.
I have a dream! One day my fellow women children and the weak will free of difficulties…I hope there will be enough food and nutrition for children, equal pay for women, free health care for the sick and the disabled, access of education for all…I may not see it in my life time but I am sure that country will make it….
I am very proud of this young hard working woman. There are thousands of them like her we don’t hear about every day. In the city full of so many lures and distractions for you women, she decided to do this hard, low paying, none glamorous job alone with no family close by. What can I say. except keep going.
Wishing all Muslims in Ethiopian and around the world a Happy EID.
Peace, Prosperity, Happiness!
1,5 a day. This is your Leba master created . A modern slavery by your dead mater and wait a minute what is that evil Azeb is doing ..selling young girls t Arabs to be raped, and as a sex slaves… Just go to Bole and count them all heading to Arabs country abounding their Christian name, and wearing like those Arabs……….
Is that your great leader who is in hill now telling you in your dream..hahahaaaaa.
Adgi ,who the hell are you supposing
fooling with your stupid childish rhetoric EPRDF here Eprdf there and Meles ,Meles stupid bla blas…Ladies exposed to hard jobs or being enslaved as maids in Arab Countries and youth ,graduating from Universities ,with only jobs opportunities cobblestone or Exile .Are not really a mark of a prospering Society ,but only “MISERY” .Afterall 99.99 % of Ethiopian Women have not the means of life of the Evil Widow and the Agazi Bandits . It’s like in the late 60th and 70th while Chinese and the then Eastern Asean Communist parties Despots Whorshipers including the then Latino American Juntas ,showing women and children swating on such kind of jobs as their great achievements .
Wey gud, yegermal zendro!!!
Women in all Africa and Ethiopia have always been working hard, be it on the field, markets, cooking, fetching water, ..just name it. Without them nothing would have existed, neither the nation nor life itself!! This is not a new phenomena, except for our AZ (recently turned poet laureate too, ha ha ), who, we may safely assume, would even one day proclaim that the sun started shining after the woyane came.
AZ, shame, shame shame, shame on you! How can you say such things? This is incredible!!! Look at your people in Soddo, and Sebat Bet Gurage, at Aregash, Adanetch, and all the other musherits, not to mention the women of the highlands who labor under the blistering sun of Shewa, Welo Gondar, Tigre, Harrar, Arussi etc etc. Who cultivates the Koba and prepares the kotcho, you and weyanne??
You would be lynched immediately if you ever show up in all these places, now that you have said this. Women emancipation started under the brutal regime of the Derg; I give them credit for that even though I abhor them. The weyanne regime is only busy trying to reverse that as the rights of women are being eroded at many levels. It pains me whenever I see women sweating it out at construction sites, etc knowing that they have yet to do more chores at home, as some would certainly have le weyanne yemiyachebechebu husbands (like our AZ?), or hang around local pubs. If the Ethiopian women are achieving economic autonomy and independence, it is all because they have always been fighters, not because of the tribalist weyannes.
With all you loyalty, an almost religious devotion and matchebcheb, the weyanne should have made you a president at least (for you certainly would much better than the present geriatric puppet!!); but look where you are now..still…
Engedih AZ, lebatchenen ataderk, yesemahawen belebeh yasadereleh (as my grandma used to say, also from Soddo, by the way!!), mend your ways and we will be friends again! What sayth thou???
Expansion and growth of small businesses will help improve the lives of many of the women in our country. A lot of the small businesses in Ethiopia are owned and run by women. Starting from bars, restaurants, hairdressers and beauty salons, cafes, bakery etc, the owners are women. And if the government makes efforts to promote small business opportunities and provide trainings, there will be prospects for livelihood; and the well being of women will greatly be enhanced.
history shows that the very reason the axumite empire tops world civilization is its respect to any kind of work.on the other hand one of the reasons the following dynasties led the country to poverty is again their disrespect to work.they gave all kind of names to those who work and benefit the society. this is specially true starting from emperor yekunoamlak.
what the curent government is doing is its is taking us back to our days of glory. the respect of work not talk.
You deteriorating mental health hits rock bottom. The good news about it, though, is that the only is up and in time you might get back to something close to normality.
Are you disparaging the late despot and the party he had led or praising him for this dismal state of our girls who were supposed to be in school and get a decent job?
A construction work for a 16 year old girl with no appropriate outfit for such inherently hazardous work is what your party calls development and job creation. It shows the opposite of what you try to portray.
You are just trying not to pass up opportunities to praise the late despot as his unknown anniversary date approaches. sort of paying tribute to your idol. No one joins you here. Try one of the sites where they call you one of their own. You a misfit here.
One thing you got unknowingly right: the leading party and its late leader had brought us to where we are now.
Ethnic strife, religious tensions, mistrust among various ethnicities, rampant corruption at the highest level , cronyism, & nepotism are the legacies of the late despot whom you consider earthly God.
I do hope Ethiopia will never ever see a leader like him again. Gone to soon for you but stayed as a leader too long for others.

they are vary smart theY knew everything even they can tell you about your late PM .GREAT DISTRUCTION PLAN
he never build Ethiopia instead make us land lock country divided Ethiopian everywhere so he can advance his m..f tigray
I know for sure Somali women work harder than men. Afar too. Our women in Amara do too and Tigre. But cities need a bit more women who value work than dancing.
AZ is right, the work ethic has definitely changed since the so called rebels entered the 4kilo palace, no doubt about it. Unless you are deaf and blind there is no way to say other wise. They brought a new psychology, attitude, to working, most of it from the far east.
I heard a story depicting what a Chinese did at a construction sight in one of Addis Ababa neighborhood. This Chinese guy noticed that most of the day laborers at the sight used there shovels to lean on and have a chat with fellow laborers after a minute or two of action, He had to do some thing about it- the next day he ordered all the shovels to be shortened and the problem was solved.
Degrading Ethiopian women to mere daily laborers, giving them unsuitable, back breaking jobs for women (yeken Serategna)and sending them to Arabia as contemporary slaves is a typical TPLF era curse!
Throughout Ethiopia’s history, women have always been extremely hard working and backbones of their respective societies. From countryside women working on the fields, carrying fire woods, fetching water, grinding, cooking, raising kids, making garment and whatnot to supporting their families and produced healthy society unlike nowadays. In eastern Ethiopia, Addis Ababa and other main cities, alongside with running their households as perfectly as they can, women have always created and run various businesses, held down good jobs, sold all sorts and they have always been sharp business, academic minds when given the opportunity and still are.
Women like Bethelhem Tilahun, Sara Abera, Meaza Ahenafi, Tsedey Asrat, Dr Eleni G Medhin, Sophia Bekele etc etc etc many other top business brains in that land are women. Reducing such potential genius business, academic minds to daily laborers, Arab housemaids is not something we should even brag about. Rather, creating better opportunity to Ethiopia’s sharp women is key and that is great strategy for growth, success. It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out how smart Ethiopian women are when given the right opportunities.
Good to see you around! You have nailed it my dear. AZ is at his all time low for some unknown reason. Perhaps, he is finally losing his mind after years of being pathological liar who is only experts at insults, lying…Seems like all is catching upon and closing in on our good old AZ …
@ forward with comradde tamagne
Stop talking garbage here TPLF clown! Ethiopia’s economy was fine until many major wars with foreign enemies as well as EPLF & TPLF with their Arab masters reduced it to none. As for Axumite empire, you need to get yourself familiarize with that era’s trade including slave trade on massive scale?
He is now old and the flower of his body has dried up. This is what happened to his brain and becomes mad.
As you see your old friends AP and senait who still have the beeper # of emperor Minilik, are bent on self contradiction and denial.
As of the low job, everybody is not expected to be a doctor or engineer and big time business people.
All it takes is how you do in your own field or any job you can put your hands on. A job is a job as long as you’re productive and execute it successfully.
That’s what our young generation is doing so far, with their ambitious work ethics trying to do something.
Even after graduating from school, they never stay home or roam the streets until the govt find a job for them. They use their mind to create something to keep them busy.
In the old days, we know how the farmer trys to find an excuse to lay down his plough and have a Tella or two socializing. Do you remember how many saints celebrated each day in a month? Not that I’m anti TABBOT or something, but let’s not forget how we were hindered by some of our excessive traditional stigma.
We can’t expect God to feed us all the time by nature “woff zerash migib", for which we’ve to pay heavily being starved and suffering in drought.
Ayzuachu! To the women working in construction. Much more respectable than bars and street.
$ 1.50 is low, about 540 Birr a month but when there is nothing else available it should do. Also I would like to see stories that some women worked in construction at the bottom and became Builders/Contractors themselves. I would buy a house build entirely by women because by nature they are attentive to details. Also It would be nice to see women mechanics owning Garages. In America some women got together and opened a Garage and they became successful.
God Bless Ethiopia. Let’s all work, there is no shame in working.
NPR interviewer thanks we know what is going on in Ethiopia. My sister is among those hard workers but the life she is living? you should ask Mekdes the one you interview her. Also, you see her? what does she looks like? did you ask her about her family? did you ask her whether the money she makes enough for her expense? or did you ask her how many times a day she is eating? I know you like Ethiopian and Ethiopian development keep broadcasting ok one day you will know the reality because you are from real media so you can understand if you keep visiting Ethiopia.
