ADDIS ABABA — Muslims in Ethiopia protested in the capital Addis Ababa during Eid al-Fitr prayers on Thursday, part of a two-year-old campaign against what they say is government interference in their religious affairs.

A heavy police presence around the city's stadium — the venue for morning prayers — marked a tense run-up to the Muslim holiday after clashes between Muslims and police killed up to five people last week in Ethiopia's south.

Demonstrators chanted "Allahu Akbar" and hoisted banners that read "respect the constitution," referring to allegations that the government has tried to influence the highest Muslim affairs body, the Ethiopia Islamic Affairs Supreme Council.

Ethiopia, long seen by the West as a bulwark against militant Islam in the Horn of Africa, denies the claims but says it fears militancy is taking root in the country.

"These were Salafist elements who tried to create disturbances as the crowd went back to their homes," government spokesman Shimeles Kemal told Reuters, referring to the ultraconservative brand of Islam followed by al Qaeda.

"They have no following among the population but still tried to make it look like a protest. A few have been arrested."

Muslims make up about a third of the population in the majority Christian nation of 85 million, and the vast majority follow the moderate, Sufi version of Islam.

Some have been staging mosque sit-ins and street protests in the capital for almost two years. They accuse the government of promoting an "alien" branch of Islam — the Al Ahbash sect — which is avowedly apolitical.

The government denies that, and protesters' allegations that authorities tried to rig elections to the Islamic council earlier this year.

Shimeles said the protesters aimed to set up an Islamic state in the country and were bankrolled and guided by "extremists" overseas.

Thursday's incidents followed clashes in Kofele in Ethiopia's Oromiya region, where government officials said Muslims wielding machetes and arms clashed with police, killing police officers and civilians. The protesters blamed the authorities for the incident.

Last year, police arrested 29 members of a committee that called for protests, accusing them of "planning to commit terrorist acts."

Amnesty International urged Ethiopia on Thursday to end "its use of repressive tactics" against the demonstrators.

Ethiopian peaceful Muslims have already understood how our enemies from outside and inside trying to hi jack their religion for their political drama.
The so called opposition group who has no political aspiration what so ever is behind the unrest and the main organizer of this protests.
As the innocent peaceful majority Muslim brothers and sisters of Ethiopia are demanding the govt to take decisive action on these anarchists, terrorists, and fanatic losers, the govt should take more measures, whatever it takes, with all options on the table. Because this is all about the sovereignty of our country Ethiopia!

What goes around comes around.

AI is doing its jobs. It’s always been committed to reporting on human rights issues even if its findings and stance on such issues are frowned upon by many governments. Now TPLF is at the receiving end of harsh criticism it’s begun to label AI agents of the West & foreign-based opposition groups working to destabilize the country.

The government hasn’t been known for its tolerance of dissent. It’s been used to having its way in all affairs of the country. And any dissent and disobedience are dealt swiftly and harshly.

But political repression and religious interference are not the same and as such have to be dealt with differently. You can imprison your political opponents or send them in to exile. But the same set of rules don’t apply to a protest mov’t that has the backing of a third of the population.
Mass movement is harder to deal with than political mov’t. Memories of the last mass mov’t are still fresh in the minds of many people and the regime.

The gov’t failed to deal with the problem and the consequences of these confrontations are unpredictable. Unwittingly, it’s opening the Pandora’s box.

Interesting to note that the unlikely segment of the population which had hitherto largely been by- standers in Ethiopian affairs are giving the gov’t its first real test. This time the gov’t has no choice but to back down & come up with some face-saving arrangements to diffuse the tensions.

The nightmare scenario of setting precedent on such demand by protestors keep the regime on edge. The demands will come in flood and it won’t be long before the people demand nothing less than the heads of the ruling elites and their cronies.

By that time AZ will be in a terminally-ill floor of Tikur Anbesa hospital and join his idol in a life after this one.

Mr. Desalegn Haile Mariam, you should know beating the protesters does not end the protest, but killing does, so use your common sense!

This is a critical problem which has to be addressed to all sectors of Ethiopians regarding to finding of a lasting solution rather than pouring gas to the fire like the so called politicians or activists doing from remote. Nobody asks and analyze the disaster and big damage caused by the new politically coated international Muslim movement in the world. This movement does not help even the extreme Muslim majority county leave alone a country like us. We all see and hear the atrocities of this movement every day in a country like Syria, Egypt, Libya, Mali, Nigeria, etc and what we will expect from this trend to our country? I oppose this government for many of its wrong doing to the country but for this kind of problem, all people need to unite in finding a solution rather than widening the rift that ultimately divide the country into small fiefdom. When our politicians are going to be concerned on the National interest of the country? They always sing the same song for bloodshed as a method of power grapping and this taken as a political culture for the last 40 years.

this has more to do with the saudis and their billions of dollars investement over the last 20+ years, than the ethiopian muslims.
——————————

“Reza F. Safa, author of Inside Islam: Exposing and Reaching the World of Islam, estimates that since 1973, the Saudi government has spent an unbelievable $87B to promote Wahhabism in the United States, Africa, Southeast Asia and Europe.
The wahabi textbooks, even grammar books, are full of phrases exalting war, jihad, and martyrdom.
Wahhabism rejects Western democracy, and praises the type of regime Saudi Arabia has embraced, the character of which is attributed to Islamic directives. Christians and Jews in particular are denounced as infidels. Jews especially are presented as enemies of Islam and of Muslims. “Muslims may not befriend them, nor emulate them in any way, lest that lead to love and friendship which is forbidden.”
And the most malleable minds belong to Muslim children. Intolerance and outright rejection of western values and democratic ideals — classical Wahabbism — are often taught.
Students are taught “it is better to shun and even to dislike Christians, Jews and Shiite Muslims.” Students learn it is okay to hurt or steal from a non-Muslim.
The Saudi-supplied textbooks at these Wahhabi schools state that Muslims are obliged to consider all infidels the enemy.”

Assta B. Gettu [Visitor], what u wrote above is appalling and i strongly condemn it. It is clear now that what you really want is an endless bloodshed and chaos in the name of the most divisive and evil creation of humanity, religion. To which part you truly belong does not matter. As far as i’m concerned, there absolutely no difference between you and the extreme wahabists all Ethiopians must fend off. Your and your twin brother gragn ahmed’s wishes to see carnage in Ethiopia will never materialize. It is my hope that HMD does not have “common[evil] sense” like yours. Violence cannot solve any of the country’s new and old challenges. Forceful confrontation cannot ease the intra-societal strains we are seeing at the moment. But, here you are advising the GoE to shoot and kill our naive, brainwashed and innocent muslim citizens. Shoot and kill is what gragn ahmed would have advised any government confronted with the protest of religiously motivated radical christians. Shameful enemies of Ethiopia and humanity!

The GoE must apply maximum restraint, patient, caution, wisdom as well as resolve when it deals with the protesters. It must not resort to killing and torturing. Violence by the government against the protesters will provide the fuel the Wahabists of Awolia Islamic school and the diaspora islamic extremists like jawar mohammad have been craving to ratchet up their confrontation and persuade the peaceful majority that jihad is the answer. Nobody will be a winner if the kind of situation comes to reality. We all will be losers. The GoE must continue its effort to identify and isolate the leading radicals with the backing of the barbarian arabs. It must wage propaganda war on social media. This is the 21st century. Television, radio and print media are no more enough to win the propaganda battle. The government must also end all kinds of aid from the Arabs. I read somewhere recently that UAE is funding a holiday party of sort in two of the mosques the country fully financed to build somewhere in Addis. This kind of funding and arrangement most be stopped. Islamic schools like Awolia and that of the Turks must be under the full control of the administration of the country’s education authority, which is sadly led by an idiotic criminal by the name of Shiferaw Shigute. The GoE must remain steadfast in its refusal to give in an inch to the barbaric, intolerant and evil demands of the Wahabists. That can be done without resorting to violence, something which the wahabi jihadists really want.

Never fooled by Woyane

From the inception of the Marxist-Leninist TPLF groups in 1977, they have been hostile and brutal to our Orthodox Christians and Muslim faith people, Amharas and Oromos.

From the beginning of the TPLF rebel movement they started with assault on religion with similar brutality.
i.e murder, kidnappings, disappearances, and widespread intimidation.

TPLF leaders have mercilessly killed those priests, monks, nuns, or deacons in front of the congregation who were recalcitrant to accept TPLF orders.

They also killed Muslims in Afar but the Muslims start killing those TPLF cadres and scared them to death.

The futile attempt to diminish belief in God and moral authority of religious organizations and to convert people into TPLF Marxist-Leninist murderer group worshipers was clearly laid out in the TPLF/EPRDF strategic plan of the 1977 and 1993
and that is what has been carried through out TPLF/ EPRDF’s reign.

TPLF believes in murdering and not fearing God for their merciless and cruel conduct but what we witness at the end of Meles’s life was a sudden shift. He was portrayed a Christian and buried his corpse in Kidus Sellasie Church as if they will fool God and us. The burial ground is watched by guards 24/7 as if the mummified Meles will jump out of its grave or people will come and find nothing in the ground.

Meles and all dead TPLF cadres are burning in hell.

Mr. Free (member),

We will see if softness, gentleness, and mediocre friendship with the Jihadist Muslims will bring you peace, security, and order.

Did peace and friendship with Adolf Hitler and with his Islamist supporters end the bloodiest World War II? It was the Allied smart guns and bombs that brought peace and security to the world, especially to the Jews and to the Ethiopians.

If you want to fool the Ethiopians, telling them there is peace when there is no peace, then it is your prerogative to do so.

The prophet Jeremiah says: “They dress the wound of my people as though it were not serious.” ‘Peace, peace,’ they say, when there is no peace” (Jeremiah 8:11).

Go down to the Anwar Grand Mosque in Addis Ababa and say to the Jihadist Muslims: “Peace!” Their response will be “No peace with you unless you meet all our demands!” Only God knows how many demands they have. I am sure one of their demands is the establishment of an Islamic government in Ethiopia with its Sharia law.

Don’t forget what Quran 5:51 say: “Believers, take not Jews and Christians for your friends.”

Your condemnation of mantor evil was a brash not strong. I got your message.
It’s not condemnation but awarness not to stirr the pot up too much to tip the brutal fascist Coptic government.
You feared the ghost Wahabis, ghost jihadist, gohost barbaric Arabs from taking the power from you.

I don’t blame you for your tactics to use it as pretext as Woyane uses it to oppress them, deny them equality, justice and freedom.

Hitler after all used this tactis too and see where he is today.

This blunder, crime goes only when Ethiopian Muslims get their freedom like South Sudan and Eritrea. This should be the immediated goal.

You can bark whatever you want thereafter in your cave or out of the cave in the west. Beast haters

Eth Muslims refused to comment here. They say it’s extremist AMhara coptic web site.
