Does H&M’s investment in Ethiopia finally signal the African manufacturing boom?

By SIMON ALLISON

No one really wants to make things in Africa. This is a generalisation, but it’s a fair one. As a rule, African countries are not known for their manufacturing prowess, and there are a couple of good reasons for this.

There’s the image problem, for a start. Too often Africa is seen as a continent of conflict, corruption and instability, none of which is conducive to long-term big capital investments. Then there’s the competition: Asian countries, particularly China, India, Bangladesh and Vietnam, have perfected the art of producing things in the fastest possible time at the lowest possible price. These countries make most of the world’s stuff, and have fuelled their own growth in the process. Quite simply, manufacturing in Africa is more expensive than elsewhere, and when it’s not, it’s perceived as too risky.

But the times they are a-changing. With the general increase in Asia’s prosperity has come an increase in the cost of doing business there and suddenly western companies – grown fat on the spoils of underpaid (some say exploited) labour – must look to new destinations to keep up their supply of cheap stuff.

Yes in deed! No question about it.
Africa is risen!
No looking back!
All credit to our own visionary leader the great Meles Zenawi. You cannot deny his contribution and effort to stabilize the whole continent, by preaching about development, peace and fighting poverty instead of each other.

This sounds good. Manufacturing industry is the way forward. We cannot afford to stay stuck in that agriculture-lead motto, which TPLF was trumpeting for decades like a fools’ song despite genuine advices to look for alternatives. The large-scale farming was in principle a good move but ill-intentioned and flawed in its implementation: TPLF-mafia style. However, without liberalization of the economy to home-grown investors free of nepotism and corruption and without a genuine commitment to democratization, all this move is likely to fail at the end of the day. Prolonged tyranny is like a time bomb: when it explodes, it can take any shape and form you have never imagined before and will take away everything around it. Iraq, Syria, Libya, Egypt, etc are all cases in point.

Meles does not deserve any credit. In fact, he owed Ethiopia a lot both in terms of economic development and democracy. Unfortunately he passed away before he could repent for his blunders and bad deeds. It is sad to know that he died of a fatal disease known as HATRED rampant in some sections of Tigray, particularly Adwa. His sickness is so contagious that an increasing number of cadres is still suffering from it as we speak. Addis Gomen is losing his little brain because of the same sickness.

Read carefully what this racist journalist is writing. He writes” this is a generalization, but it is a fair one. Too often Africa is seen as continent of conflict.” The conflict in Africa and the rest of the colonized world is a direct result of the colonization by invading European hords. Ruwanda´s ethnic cleansing was a result of the divide and rule tactics of Belgium. Eritrea- Eth. conflict: Had Italy not carved our province from its motherland, there would not have been a devastating 30 years war. Conflict in Nigeria in the 1960´s, Biafra´s attempt to separate from Nigeria is also Britisch machination who divided the christians and moslems, resulting in a fratricidal war. Sudan, Mozambique, Angola, Congo, the Indian sub continent, the middle east etc., is the doing of particularly the British. The colonialists left every where mines which exploded after independence. How do you think they were able to conquer the whole world. Answer: Divide and rule. Africa before clonization was peaceful place, Europeans are the one´s who brutalized our continent.

This is such a great news, hopefully more mega brands would follow H&M’s suit to Ethiopia and create jobs for 90% of citizens who as we speak are unable to afford one decent meal a day! All because some looters in Arat Killo mismanage, abuse what the 80% produce blatantly!

As for the TPLF roaches barking above, just because H&M is investing in Ethiopia, it does not in anyway mean that Ethiopia shall be under tyranny & suffocation forever. The minute there is some positive news, the empty skull TPLFs with village mentality are here insulting the opposition. What for?

Mind you, even Hitler & Mussolini, Idi Amin, Pinochet etc etc were the most productive, progressive leaders. That is a typical trait of evil Tyrants. Tyrants seek personal glory at the expense of the masses, put great emphasis on development, progress. Mengistu Haile Mariam did exactly the same too, shame TPLF & EPLF wouldn’t let him develop the nation! While tyrants practice their evil agenda, they all talks and breath the same thing, talk the same language. The result of their 24/7 trumpeted development & progress more often than not don’t even move the average citizen 1 inch out of poverty! Africa’s case typically! Same applies to TPLFs & Co.

Sorry to break this to you, retards but attracting cheap labor does not in any way mean Ethiopians should take your rotten one party, one jungle, one kangaroo, one village rule! Not a chance. We are there working with you & developing our nation. More than any talkative cadre ever dreams of but we are fighting on!

Dinqem sertesh moteshal! Ha Ha Ha Ha!!
Tirses limadu new ayenen atasqiw, alle bichegrew!
AP pathological liar, wushetam totta, the diaspora crew back home working their butts off with the rest of Ethiopians have nothing to do with the few hodd amilaku diaspora losers here in the west, who night and day 24/7 praying and wishing disaster to hit Ethiopia.
That’s why when ever we hear good news about our country, we celebrate and rejoice.
I’ve never seen anyone who makes such a self contradictory remark like you. Anchi wushetam Tottit!
Wodet tegga tegga! You think we will late you diaspora losers take credit out of nowhere? We know there are some kiray sebsabi diaspora who went back home only to secure their retirement, but have nothing to do with the country’s developmental progress. And some even anti Ethiopians but hidden like you. It is ok, that’s how democracy is working in our country. As long as you’re a peaceful citizen, you’ll be permitted to do whatever you aspire to do.

This would have been good new if it were to include other Ethiopians instead of the few TPLF/EPRDF hate and greed filled opportunists.
This will benefit only the few controlling power, the TPLF/EPRDF, EFFORT, State of Tigray (the State within a State) and foreigners who are running to Ethiopia, to get resouces, get away from safe environmental challengers and to get cheap labor that is designed by TPLF/Meles culprits for Oromos and Amaras.

Every profit is consumed by the authoritarian TPLF/EPRDF regime and State of Tigray (EFFORT). Until this one sided TPLF/EPRDF cadre takes it all attitude changes it will be a receipt for disaster.

Anger among the millions who are being forced to give up their freedom, liberty, house, health, land, wealth, and property is building up despite the futile attempt to disguise the truth.

AZ or the loser Addis Zeregna, the sleepless restless TPLF cadre again has nothing to do except watching for new articles so to paste hateful comments first.

It shows how our looted money is being wasted on spies and useless people like AZ.

Mamo Killo. Such a shame you are stuck and rotting in the USA with only your Trumpet mouth, snow white dentures & backward one party, one rule, one village ideology. Perhaps the fact that you are no Tsila is what is holding you back? I heard they despise sellout cadres like yourself in Arat Killo! Hahahaa!

Whereas, we are test driving our brand spanking new Bole road ;) Lets hope it won’t be cracking on us soon lol … The diaspora have built countless business out there, hiring countless people, bringing about sharp ideas and developing their nation better than any talkative brick head cadre. Even your jungle buddies have stepped up their thinking in Addis. Sometimes I believe the likes of you are a massive disservice to GOE, how can a human being be as retarded as you? Search me!

The diaspora are developing their nation as well as FEEDING the nation by remitting more than the annual export revenue, FACT.

Only your brainless TPLFs are on the way of their pace. Diapora development is HOME DEVELOPMENT. whereas Foreigner’s control of land and core assets is contemporary slavery! You are too pitiful, a geriatric to digest such thought…

BTW, better drop your tourism business, it is now all taken by smart folks :)):))

AZ and AP of course for ethiopia, that was once synonymous with war and famine becoming the next china is almost too good to be true and we should give due credit to the government, but at the same time development like this and others should not be used by the government to rule the nation indefinetely as they seem to be. AZ you have to look around you and realize unless your party makes the same effort on the democratic front as on the development, every thing that the country builds today will mean nothing. look around, whether it is syria, egypt or the many nations who put democracy aside for 30 to 40 years when they were in power, they are killing tens of thousands of their own people and destroying their country today. they simply waited until its too late for every one. that is what many of us are afraid it might happen to ethiopia and it will happen one day unless the government makes a genuine effort towards democracy. this also goes to the opposition, they need to change their attitude and learn how to compromise.
