Ethiopia: '160-year-old man' claims to remember 1895

Ethiopia: '160-year-old man' claims to remember 1895

BBC

An Ethiopian reporter claims to have discovered the world's oldest living man.

Retired farmer Dhaqabo Ebba claims to have clear memories of Italy's 1895 invasion of the country. In an interview with regional Oromiya TV, he provided so much detail on the changes of power in his local area that reporter Mohammed Ademo has become convinced that Dhaqabo must be at least 160 - 46 years older than the oldest ever recorded man.

'When Italy invaded Ethiopia I had two wives, and my son was old enough to herd cattle,' he said at home near Dodola. He went on to recount his childhood eight-day horseback ride to Addis Ababa - a journey of a few hours today.

There is no way of verifying Mr Dhaqabo's age, but Mohammed Ademo notes that in an oral society like the Oromo, "every time an elder dies, a library is lost. Ebba is one such library from whom so much can still be preserved".

OLF reporter (Blogger!) Mohammed Ademo has made a living badmouthing Ethiopia on Al Jazeera forever.

This tale of 160 year old man, is as fairytale as all of Mohammed’s stories against Ethiopia.

First I want to say Thanks Nazret.
This gentleman is really amazing. I know during those times we did not have Birth Certificate, we would know when somebody was born pointing to points of history.
If the claim is correct, he is , bound to be famous.
I have been to Dodola, nice place and nice people. The Kolo that I bought there in a plastic bag was still hot, fresh and delicious.
Somebody should really write a book about his life. There would be a lot of things that we would learn from him. I am interested what he eats, amounts, how much he walks everyday, his favorite drink and past time. Most places that have a lot of centenarians have something in common and that is community closeness.
God Bless you and wish many more years.

@Fanta-Fanta u moron, what you have is a blind hate for Oromos. Today millions of Oromo childrens are well educated and will bring the oromos cause to an international arina, u will burn to ur death but we will continue our for justice!!! Our pericious boy, Mohammed Ademo wrote about the story and BBC refered to this story. But the reporter was of Oromia TV sponsored by ethiopian governement. so Ademo is not the source of the story!!!

Congratulation to the man. It is interesting story, which needs further curiosity for the benefit of our own life and fragile health state problems. True, definetily Dhaqabo could be above hundred but how much above is anyone`s guess. 160 years sounds bit hyperbolic to me. Modern science fairly established the limits of endurance of the human mental state/body functionality. But when he said he had kids circa 1895 I dont know what to make of it. If anything, we need to learn from him what even sustained him to cross 100 years of age. What kind of lifestyle he led such as food, environ, social, sprituality, substance use and so on could be the the key answers for his longevity.

They should do DNA or other tests to determine his age. This can be done.

Whether it is a fiction or true story, the author made one major mis-calculation.
“his childhood eight-day horse back ride to Addis Ababa".
According to his age there was no Addis Ababa when he was young. How old is our beautiful Addis? Go figure!
To make it as simple as understandable a story, our old guy is talking about the second world war era Italian invasion of Ethiopia, not by any means Adwa! Which makes him 108 years old great archive of history.

If he had retired at 55 yeas of age. Which
back then was the norm. The man retired over a 100 years ago. Remembering history in micro details does not make the claim true. One thing I noticed he is not claiming to be, for his credit. Like A. Z. said at best, I’ll give him to have witnessed the Second World War. At best. That’s it.

It would be more appropriate if Atto Dhaqabo Ebba were talking about the second phase of Italy’s invasion of Ethiopia in 1935. Italy invaded Ethiopia from two direction, where their invading forces from Northern and Southern Ethiopia met in Addis Ababa during this period. It’s very unlikely for Atto Ebba to have observed the advent of the Italians in 1895 as their presence was limited to Eritrea, Tigrai and perhaps Wollo and Gondar in the north.

This story could very well be “true!” It’s a known fact that the human body can live well over 200 yrs. under the right conditions. The right conditions consist of, the air/atmospheric quality, correct diet & all the above is rooted in ones overall “living arrangement/ environment.” Different parts of this world provide different food resources, which confirms why there are many different “cultures” b/c we are what we eat. Everything we consume has an effect on our body’s development & function, as well as the brain. In short, I believe Mr. Dhaqabo Ebba is 160 yrs. of age, his name alone bares a significant amount of proof, in my view…

What the Dodola man knows what happened in 1895? Did he listen from BBC, or ENA? Which war is he talking about? Because, the 1895 war with Italy was only in Adwa, So, where this entire funny story coming from just funny as his age. (a 160 years Like “Matusala” in the Bible) In my view, maybe in the 1950th or 1960th he just having a chance to see a British colonialists from Kenya, secretly investigating some areas in side Ethiopia around “Dodola” where this man was been. So he thought they were Italians. So, please don’t write funny things like this without a proof. I think this man is not older than 65 -75 years old.

Anyone with pure Oromo gene can out live most Amharas, Tigres and so on by atleast one or two decades. That is why we Oromos wanted succession from the rest of Ethiopia. We wanted to be able to preserve our pure religion , culture and most importantly our genetic make up which allowed us to live a happy , healthy and long life.Even in prison where most Oromo elders are subjected to the worst living conditions Oromo elders tend to stay healthier than the ones who put us in prison who got ample access to medical attention.
