Ethiopia Supports Campaign Against International Court
By Marthe van der Wolf
ADDIS ABABA — Ethiopia, which currently chairs the African Union, says it supports the push by Kenya for African countries to jointly withdraw from the International Criminal Court. The ICC has put Kenyan Deputy President William Ruto on trial for alleged crimes against humanity, while President Uhuru Kenyatta is scheduled to go on trial in November.
Ethiopia says it will support Kenya’s campaign to find a continent-wide stance on possibly pulling out of the ICC. The issue is likely to be discussed at the African Union summit next month in Addis Ababa.
Government spokesman Redwan Hussein says Ethiopia feels that the ICC singles out African leaders.
“We never appreciated what the ICC has been doing, particularly when it comes African leaders, and its belittling and it’s disparaging the African leadership. So we stand by the Kenyan people and we stand by the Kenyan government,” said Redwan Hussein.
All official investigations of the ICC since it was established in 2002 have been in African countries.
That fact has prompted some African officials to refer to the court as a tool of Western powers.
Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn accused the ICC earlier this year of race hunting.
The ICC appointed Fatou Bensouda from Gambia last year as its new chief prosecutor. She has stated repeatedly that most cases are opened in cooperation with African countries, and dismissed the idea that the ICC is singling out African leaders.
However, Redwan believes Ethiopia will not need to actively push other African countries to take up its position during the October summit.
“They share the take that we have with ICC, so they don’t need Ethiopia’s urging or pushing them to take whatever action, because the feeling is already there in each country,” he said.
Kenyan lawmakers voted earlier this month to withdraw from the ICC, a decision that will take at least a year to take effect.
In the meantime, Kenyan Attorney General Githu Muigai says his office is cooperating with the ICC.
"From this office, I have filed documents with the court, when I have been requested to do so, demonstrating we are supporting the court in its work, and we recognize the court is an independent judicial organ," said Muigai.
President Kenyatta and Deputy President Ruto are being tried on charges of orchestrating the ethnic violence that swept across the country after the disputed 2007 presidential election. Both men have denied the charges, and at the start of his trial this week, Ruto pleaded not guilty.
the idiot woyanes fear that they will taste the same fate soon. shame on the so called ethiopian leaders. the ICC sees african cases most b.c. most human rights abuses are made
by z stupid african leaders such as those in ethiopia.
Of course Ethiopians leadership would withdraw, otherwise it is like putting a rope around their own necks! Sounds like a intelligent move to me in terms of their own perservation, in addition, the court is a western tool aimed towards African leadership, there is nothing perfect about the white way of doing things for Africans.
Perhaps African leaders may have their own self-interest in opposing the ICC but so do others. Western countries, escpecially the US, have pushed the ICC to prosecute leaders of other countries while they have refused to ratify its statutes unless there is a guarantee of immunity for their citizens. The court has legitimacy problems when its statues apply to some countries but not others and those leaders who are now opposing the ICC have principle on their side, for better or worse.
Who created ICC, human right, environment activist,Amnisty, christen science,Green peace,IMF,etc. all these are a modern western colonial mercenary to protect western interest.
Let us see here. The crime committed by UK to eliminate the ABORGIN from their land , How many aborigines have left in Australia? They tried in South Africa but failed .
I think we should throw out these parasites organisation from Africa continent .
Africa has rised and is heading to brighter future and that is what these new western mercenary colonial killer do not want us be wealthy and rich.
Any sensible true black African will not support the ICC. Well done Ethiopia and Kenya keep the campaign until ICC is kicked out of African soil then there won’t be any ICC because it is established to intimidate Africans.
ICC systematically is tempering with the sovereignty of African states.
ME TOO SUPPORT THE CAMPAIGN AGAINST THE ICC.
what Africans Pressedants crays for is only for thier on ass,but what they are doing at home on thier own people is the same thing look for your self how our Ethiopian court has put maney innocent people in jail .Your tribe matter than you case
Birds of the same feather flying together. Woyanes who were deceiving the world in the name of democracy reach to the point they can no longer make a drama and stood behind their true friends of African dictators. The blood of innocent gambellas, Amharas in bedeno, somalies in Ogaden will never let to go unpunished. So African dictators are complaining of white supremacy in ICC where the head is appointed from Africa. The fact of the truth is Africa is a continent where citizens are excited by the government officials aribitrarly and authorities are above the law. Likewise the fate of woyanes is to appear on ICC or local courts after the demise of the regime.
It is just amazing to see how dictators and criminals cover each others ass. Also, the AU is such a dysfunctional organization run by puppets of tyrants attempting to endorse tyrants and thugs demand. The thugs and tyrants claimed that ICC singles out African leaders. If their demands (against ICC’s quest) are not met, they will pull out of ICC. This is a very dangerous stand and an embarrassment to the people of Africa and humanity.
The criminal thugs are attempting to delay justice of the people whose life was wasted for good causes. People should not be denied justice by any means.
If the Agazi Bandits are against the ICC ,just because they know perfectly that all them on the lists of the Criminals ,whose cases will be prosecuted infront the International Judicial Institution .At one time ,the then Crime Minister, infront of his Fake Parliement ,supposing fooling peoples ,his childish arguments to justify his evil crimes was :"…Ye tekurem ,ye Netchim Dem Ande Nehu..” ,Tebale Ende ,Le Mehonu Antena Gibre Aberotchew Yastchefetchefatchehut Nesuh Ye Ethiopiawian ,Dem Ante ENDE ANTE Ye Azo Enbahin Lafessesehelatchew ,Hawzen Aleku Lemetelatchewuna ,Wodadjehin Kagamen Lemasdeset Ye Abebahen Gungunehn Teshekemeh Lezemerkelatchew ,Ende Enezia Ye Rwanda Tutsi Semahahtate DEM KEY MOHONUN ENDEMIN TESANEH !!!! BE MOTFFO LEBONAHINA BE ASEYAFEW DIRGITEH ENDJI . These evil guys dare to defend the cases of Regional Ethno Mafia Warlords ,Tyrants and war criminals .With the hope and objectif to be spared from being next time accountable for their own Crimes .JUSTICE FOR THE AFRICAN PEOPLES !!!!SHAME ON THE AU OFFICIALS !!!
Ethiopia should acknowledge the existence of the International Criminal Court (ICC) that has so far impartially brought to justice criminal leaders, such as Charles Tailor of Liberia and others. The people of Africa want to see justice well served for the crimes some of their leaders have perpetrated while in power.
Those African leaders who do their businesses hidden from the public eyes without adequate transparencies are, perhaps, the ones who want to do business as usual out of the sight of the ICC. The ICC is the only protection the ordinary people of Africa have since their greedy leaders have no time to look after the many abuses some of these African leaders commit against their own people.
Most workers in the world have union leaders who protect the workers from being exploited by their employers; hence, the ICC should be considered as the protector or as the mouthpiece of the citizens of the world. When the citizens of the world are extremely oppressed by their leaders, there must be someone to whom the citizens of the world should bring their grievances, and that someone must be the unbiased ICC.
When the Israelites were mistreated, abused, and ridiculed by the Biblical Pharaohs, God gave them Moses and Aaron to look into their cases, and finally these two God-fearing leaders brought the oppressed Israelites to freedom. In the same way, when the Sudanese Arab-Muslim Janjaweed slaughtered thousands of the black Darfur’s people under the leadership of dictator Omar al-Bashir, the people of Darfur cried to the ICC, and the ICC indicted and charged al-Bashar for genocide on Darfur’s people, and now the criminal al-Bashar is a fugitive. He cannot travel outside of the African continent.
Unless there is something to hide from the ICC, the African leaders should not avoid facing the ICC if they think they have mistreated their own people. They must tell the ICC the truth and the way they conduct themselves in the court of justice and rule of law as they confront their own people.
Sooner or later, we will all be judged individually by our heavenly and impartial Judge, Jesus Christ; thus, we must run our daily businesses fairly, treat our workers humanely, and serve our people tirelessly and reasonably.
In the meantime, why is Ethiopia, as the chair leader of the African Union, supporting Kenya to withdraw from the ICC? Kenya has a reason for denying the existence of the ICC. Kenya wants her Deputy President William Ruto and her President Uhuru Kenyatta not to be tried by the ICC. That is Kenya’s problem, not Ethiopia’s.
The person who was suspected of committing crime in Ethiopia was Meles Zenawi, and Meles is dead, and Mengistu Haile Mariam, the number one criminal, is living in exile. Are there some criminals in Ethiopia under the leadership of Haile Mariam Desalegn whom Ethiopia does not want to extradite to the ICC? If not, why is Ethiopia afraid of the ICC? In her pushing other African states to withdraw from supporting the ICC indicates she is hiding some enemies of her ordinary people at the Menelik grand Palace or somewhere else.
Sooner or later, the truth will come out! In my view, Ethiopia should support the ICC and should not allow herself to do business with the war criminal, Al-Bashar of Northern Sudan. I don’t think the ICC singles out some African leaders as criminals purposely: the people the ICC has so far indicted as criminals in Africa are true criminals. Can anyone tell me Charles Tailor and Omar al-Bashir are not criminals?
Why is Ethiopia supporting some genocidal African leaders from being hunted down and brought to justice by the ICC? Can anyone tell me why?
Suport ICC or not wenbede govt like tribal weyane has no chance for that . At the judgment day they all at the mercy of Ethiopian ppl.
I am for abolishing this so-called ICC. Ethiopia should lead the way and propose the abolishment of this creation of the west.
Humm…fes yalebest zelay aychelem!…dictators are chickens when it comes to them…. while they enjoying abusing their own unfortunate citizen like a trash. Tooo saaad!!
Good move by Ethiopia supporting Kenya. The ICC didn’t prosecute George W Bush for his crime in Iraq.
ExtraIdiot if you are supporting the Anti ICC Campaign is just because you are one of the Agazi Ass Holes Cadres and Bandas .Certainly Criminals ,hidden in Foreign Countries in Fake Status of DV holders ,businesmen student even diplomats …LOL !!!Are you sure ,you are not Besrate Amare ,Tesfaye Mersa or one of them…LOL !!!!!
Voicing against ICC bodes more favorably for groups or individuals who have something to hide than concern how ICC runs its business. In a continent where corrupt and rotten legislative and justice systems are rampant, I have no idea why I should oppose a body that wants to engage itself in prosecuting genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, etc.
Mr.Assta, thank you for the well thought and intelligently written comment. You were spot on.
dear Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, You are safe so far, so don’t sweat. Don’t be stupid to see the effect of dictatorship on the people
the relationship between:-
rule of law and peace
poverty and dictatorship
stable politics and economy
As all officials investigated are in Africa, it is also Africa that has all the poor countries. It is Africa that has most corrupted leaders. It is in Africa we see a horrible genocide at the end of 20th century and still seeing it.
Our Africans ancestors fought hard against the white colonialists and aggressors, they sacrificed their blood for their coming generations that is us, to enjoy our freedom.
unfortunately, we the generations, have become white worshipers. Whatever the whites tell us, yes sir! and we do it.
We don’t need ICC, United nation, Global environment, INTERPOL,International development Program, and so on.
We as Africans, should build, create and produce anything we need to help our nations.
WHY ? WHY? WHY? WHY? only African leaders are target for international
What about the Arab kings?
Why so called international court do something about the government of Oman?
what about government of Saudi Arabia?
Because Africans are still slaves?
only Mugabe and Kenyatta !!!
This un just, and Africa must say NO
NO NO No no no no.
ICC should start with the torture that takes place in Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and western countries. Africa countries do not need ICC period. Well done PM and Kenya. The only people that want ICC are the “Ethiopian liberals living like parasites in DC - I believe they call them the “ESAT diaspora".
