Ethiopia bans citizens from travelling abroad for work
Ethiopia's government has temporarily banned its citizens from travelling abroad to look for work, the state-run Erta news agency reports.
The foreign ministry was quoted as saying countless Ethiopians had lost their lives or undergone untold physical and psychological trauma because of illegal human trafficking.
The decision was meant to "safeguard the well-being of citizens", it added.
The travel ban will remain in place until a "lasting solution" is found.
The ministry said the government had taken various measures to limit the suffering of its citizens, including setting up a national council and a taskforce to educate them.
But those measures had not been able to address the problem sufficiently, it added.
WOW i am impressed good going Ethiopia. Hope they find jobs in Ethiopia.
Finally we hear something from Addis that sounds carrying. But I must question the motive now. Because woyane has never done anything policy wise to help or curtain Ethiopians misery. It always involves one thing, what is in for us (woyane) in it. I hope I am wrong and Woyane is coming to its senses.
Thank you Mr. Prime Minister of Ethiopia for taking a decisive action to stop the plights of many Ethiopian lovely girls who would die in the hands of the Arab-Muslim criminals in the Middle East if they go like their previous sisters to these Arab-Muslim countries to work there as maids.
Bewildered, frustrated, and angered at the previous administration of the Ethiopian Christian government, I wrote the following comment on this website on July 5, 2012:
Comment from: Assta B. Gettu [Visitor]
Dear Abebe, the agonies of the Ethiopian girls at home and in the Middle East have been loud and clear, but to their stentorian agonies and endless sufferings the Ethiopian Prime Minister, Meles Seitanawi (Zenawi), his wife Jezebel (Azeb), the Ethiopian Parliament, the Ethiopian Ambassadors to the Middle East, and the international community gave deaf ears. They all collaborated in ignoring the poor girls’ tears, humiliations, and urgent calls for help as if such tragic events had never happened in our doomed generation, a generation of me, me, me, and never cares about the other person in captivity or in jail, in slavery or in someone’s house working for a meager salary or for no salary at the expense of losing her tender body, long hair, bright eyes, smiling face to please her employers, long legs, melodious voice, and sweet heart.
The agonies these poor and lovely Ethiopian girls received in the hands of the Arab-Muslim people were indeed earsplitting: how loud did they have to scream so that the world could hear them, could understand them, and could respond to their heart-breaking mistreatments by the Middle East Muslim Arabs?
When Alem Desisa (May the Almighty God bless her soul and give her a comfortable place in heaven since there was no good place for her either at her home in Ethiopia or in the Middle East she went to work as a maid for a brutal Arab person) cried louder, saying “No, no, no” to her adaptor who forced her to go into his car and at the same time, beating her up in front of the camera. The whole world watched the brutalities committed against that charming Ethiopian girl by the truculent Beirut Arab-Muslim man.
What was the immediate response to the agonies of Alem Desisa from the Ethiopian government, from the Ethiopian Embassy in the Middle East, from the Beirut Islamic government and from the international community? Silence! And when the silence of all the parties involved to solve the agonies of this particular girl continued, the Beirut Islamic government came up with a final solution to the mistreatment of our beloved sister, Alem Desisa, and that final solution was to end up her precious life by allowing her to commit suicide, and the Beirut Islamic government confirmed that she had ended her own life by hanging herself.
Of course, Alem was not the only Ethiopian girl who died in the hands of Arab-Muslim men and Muslim women; in fact, the humiliating and inhuman death of Alem Desisa has not deterred Meles Seitanawi (Zenawi) and his wife Jezebel (Azeb) from sending thousands of other young Ethiopian girls (from age 15 to age 20) to the land of slavery – the Middle East, every month if not every day. Middle East may be a paradise to the affluent but not to the Ethiopian Christian girls who are forced, as soon as they arrive in the Middle East, to cover their heads with hijab and to wear Burqaa and to change their religion to Islam, and those who refused to do so will go to jail or their salaries will be reduced, and finally they will be murdered, and no one will be accountable for their deaths and their inhuman mistreatments before they died.
The forced push of the Ethiopian girls to the Middle East is a lucrative business to the Ethiopian government, especially to Jezebel (Azeb), who is very active in running such degrading job as she is the first lady in the Menelik II Palace.
Therefore, the agonies of the Ethiopian girls serving the Arab-Muslim lords are also the agonies of their mothers, fathers, husbands, and friends at home they have left behind. They always expect them to come back safely, but in many instances, they may never see them again. When that happens, the agonies of the mothers of those young Ethiopian girls who perished in the Middle East at the hands of ruthless, immoral, and greedy Arabs will become like the agonies of the Biblical Rachel.
Indeed, a loud voice like the voice in Rama would be heard in the homes of each mother whose daughters vanished in the Middle East, and the mother of such lost girls in foreign lands could not be comforted easily: “A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more” (Matthew 2:18; Jeremiah 31:15). Yes, Alem Desisa, and many other young Ethiopian girls like her, are no more: They are gone forever and ever! Who is going to look after them, who are going to represent them in the court of justice, if there is justice in the Arab-Muslim world, and who are going to comfort their loved ones? Do you think Meles Seitanawi (Zenawi), his wife Jezebel (Azeb), Aba Paulos, the Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church, and Al Amoudi, one of the richest men in Africa would send a condolence letter with a little donation to the families of those Ethiopian girls who gave their lives in the Middle East working for Jezebel (Azeb)? I have not heard or seen such generosities and heartily solace emanate from Zenawi, from Azeb, from Aba Paulos, and from Al Amoudi to the sad-stricken parents.
When the author of the article says, “The silent agonies of an Ethiopian generation,” I am sure he is not ignoring the reported crimes by the victims of the Ethiopian girls to the police or to the Ethiopian Embassies in their vicinities. The author is also right that there are many Ethiopian girls who die silently without telling the causes of their deaths to anybody, even to their close friends. Such deaths must be forced deaths, mostly, by their employers for various reasons, such as the employee may have threatened to go back to her country, Ethiopia, or she might have refused to be raped by her employer, or she might have ignored the everyday question her employer asked her, and that question might be: “When are you going to be a Muslim? If you refuse to become a Muslim, I am not going to pay your salary on time or not at all?”
Who can handle such silent or loud agonies of the Ethiopian girls working as slaves and as sex objects in the Arab Muslim world? It is only through prayer that these girls sold to the Arabs will be saved from their agonies: “The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth” (Psalms 145:18). We have to pray to God for them so that they can come back safely to their county, Ethiopia.

I hope Ethiopia will find enough jobs for these Ethiopian young girls and keep them in their country, and they will not be mistreated any more in the Arab-Muslim countries and die there in vain.
I am amazed not to see Aroge Gomen’s nonsense comment, which otherwise would appear as the first reaction to any topic raised.
“The travel ban will remain in place until a ‘lasting solution’ is found.”
May I tell these moron cadres that ‘the lasting solution’ is one and unique: it is the demise of their devilish organization named TPLF. There is nowhere in the world a country showing ‘11% economic growth’ for consecuitive years and at the same time its young citizens flee in droves looking for breads. The devil and his children in form of TPLF are the only ills of our beloved nation. Their demise is the only mercy to the curse we Ethiopians are suffering from. That shall take place soon. We shall regain our human dignity when we raise our flag on the graves of the devils.
Support it 100% percent! Stop embarrassing us!
The Bose of smuggler club is that devil Azeb from Mekele with many years experience starting from Sudan refugee camps in 1984. Why not banning child exporting to phadoxxphiles, lesxxxbians and homxxos .? why not exposing those weyanees who control women trafficking to Arabs tombe prostitutes?
Ethiopia has never been humiliated in whole it’s history like now since these chiggaram weyanees took power.
Eritreans with fals independency are now running to every direction from Pol pot issayas killing field . Eritrea is now like cammagruge of Cambodia run by pol pot issaya with malaria infected brain ,ready to eat a human flesh like a canibal. A mad of of Africa.
Have n’ t we Ethiopians and eritrans see enough the Missery that killed us and still kill us a live because of these two Devil created animals weyannes and shabia ?
Another Agazi Bandits Comedy .They
are passing fake laws ,while at the same times dealing with Gulf States Slaves Traders …LOL !!!!
It is good that they stopped sending migrants legally to those gulf countries as the so called legal system was not able to protect those workers. One thing which should be taken seriously is that as long as the country is not able in creating enough jobs to keep its citizen at home more should be done to create these jobs abroad in safe countries where these workers right can not be violated seriously. countries like Philippines and Indonesia now a days send more of their maids to countries in Asia than to the gulf. the government also can train these workers at home with arabic language and arab culture to minimize the gap in knowledge.
It is not responsible act by any standard. The poor Ethiopian lady who borrowed and sold everything to find gainful employment overseas will just have to return dirt poor and miserable to her hometown or stick around in Addis and join the oldest profession in the World. The govt should have set a date sometime in the future, say six months from now. At minimum, it should make it ‘ against the law to recruit any more employees from a certain date. But forbidding all those who are in the ‘ pipe line’ is counter productive. Arat kilo got this one wrong.
As i stated in my earlier threads regarding this issue, the govt should take measures to make sure employees are trained well for their tasks abroad like Indonesia is doing. ie train them in basic skills and languages for six months for assignments in Arab countries. give them free legal aid and full consular assistance wherever they might be etc etc. But summarily outlawing the export of those who have borrowed and sold every little possession is poor judgment. To the best of my recollection, live-in maids will always be abused be it in Ethiopia or Kuwait. The solution might be to have hourly employees dispatched after having undergone rigorous training with the ‘ oversight and management ‘ delegated to a reputable humane institution. The govt has yet to do any curb on the adaption front for it is paid upfront, apparently!
“Ethiopia bans citizens from travelling abroad for work”
This is a wrong title by an ignorant, unwelcome and criminal foreign media and journalist from the English Establishment (empire) school of Journalism don’t belong in the 21-century.
The Title has to be;
Finally, innocent and young Ethiopian Girls and women have got a government “that is willing and very much ready to protect them from the evil creatures in the empty and hostile desert that is badly affecting them for years.”
This is not banning citizens from travelling abroad for work as the most hated, Liar and enemy Media from the English empire era is describing according to its own twisting the story policy and tactic in order to mislead and give different meaning about the situation that it is. BBC, why don’t you go to hell? You are the enemy, everyone knows that. Who invites you to be there and who asks you to cover the story it doesn’t belong to you and your people? BBC was a propaganda media used by the empire to keep Africa and Asia colonized as long as possible, portraying black as animals and dividing and making fighting against each other in order to stay there as master, they used to be there for centuries.
It is saving the young Ethiopians that are the future of the nation from the monster, barbaric and evil Arabs from raping, torturing, enslaving, exploiting and mentally as well as physically killing them. This is how a responsible government do; protecting its citizens from the 7th century mentality and behavior monster and evils none one but the Arabs.
What the monster Arabs did and still are doing against the Ethiopian girls and women will never ever been forgiven or forgotten but it will remain forever written in the history book one day these monsters will pay the price. Their desert will eat them soon knowing oil and gas will be unwanted and cheap unable even to cover its costs.
So, the Ethiopian government and its backward and stupid diplomats in the Gulf and all so called Arabs nations must apologize the Ethiopian people and compensate the victims for not protecting the innocent, naive and young citizens paid lots of sacrifices including death by the Arabs.
It was too late to take a measure like this. Bit from now on, it must be taken very seriously and stop so called private as well as state agencies that are sending Ethiopians to the monster Arabs with empty promises but for rape, slavery, torture and killing.
Ethiopians must stop going to any country let alone to the Arabs Desert but have to work in the green and naturally rich Ethiopia to make the best living including mentally. Going to any country other than the Immigrant nations particularly USA is like going to hell by own choice. If it is in a legal way, USA, Canada and Australia are the places to go. If not. There is no any single nation better than Ethiopia to work and making the best living for Ethiopians than Ethiopia. This is the best era in Ethiopia for those ready and can work.
Stay in the country and work and build your country that will benefit you in many ways. Abolish and eliminate including using forces all so called agencies that are making the best living while sending to hell(Arab desert where the monster Arabs are) the young Ethiopians. The Ethiopian government need to be tough and punish those are engaging with these kind evil activities.
Death and destruction to the desert Arabs that are Saudi and little Gulf nations. History will keep it in record the crimes they have committed against the Ethiopian girls and women from North Africa-to Lebanon and from the centre of the evil (Saudi Arabia) to the little Gulf nations. Lets God deal with the devil Arabs. For sure, soon it will be. They don’t belong to the 21-century humanity.
The Habesha people gave shelter and safety to its followers including his two wives and sisters among the other the mother of Imam Ali and that lead to the survival of Islam which is the biggest mistakes the habesha people did because of they didn’t know such evil creatures are the Arabs. The Arabs are treating the way they do the habesha girls, women and people which is against their prophet message to their followers how it should be their behavior towards the habesha people.
They are opening their homes to the habesha Girls and women like a big and an endless hell get way and they keep them inside while taking their humanity away and enslaving, raping, torturing, abusing and killing them. There is no doubt, the coming many generations will never ever forget or forgive the crimes the Arabs are doing against the habesha girls and women in the 21-century because of they think they are rich because of they are selling oil and gas while forgetting their land is dead desert and soon they will be nomads as they were for generation.
We are waiting to happen that era on them and make us happy about it. There is nothing other than watching and experiencing the Arabs suffering giving a satisfaction feeling for the crimes they are committing against the innocent habesha girls and women.
It will happen on them; this is a fact thing. They are evil people don’t belong in the 21-century humanity.
Ethiopians must stop going to any Arab country. Don’t go to hell for the rest of your life in the Arab desert where the sins are. There is no the best place other than Ethiopia to those are ready working. Green and naturally Gifted Ethiopia must be built by Ethiopians. It is the Ethiopian era. Don’t go to the Satan’s’ Kingdoms which are the Arabs because of they are selling oil and gas and look rich. Mentally they are really from the 7th century and they seem have no what so ever any form of humanity. Avoid Satan. Don’t be fool and cheated by paper money it is getting without working but digging Sand and selling oil and gas to pollute the earth Environment
The reason majority of these people traveling is not for luck of work it is for a better pay there is a difference
they have it in their mind that they will make lots of money and come back home
Thank you we are sick of all horror story our young people face.
the fascist woyane have been selling babies to tourists and house maids to arabs to earn foreign currency. are they now telling us they are stopping doing this.
the fascists are trying to avoid international criticism by announcig this sort of rubbish, but they will continue to play their dirty games with the lives of our people.
Now the government stop sending our girls ….those who support the ban must show their support by investing in Ethiopia to creat a job…
If each of us give ( invest) $1000 dollars and if we manage to attract 100,000 Ethiopia that would be $100 million dollars
If we have $100million dollars Ethiopia government or any American bank give use $900million dollars loan
If we show Ethiopia government give us land and tax. Holiday to creat job for our returnee Ethiopian maid that would be a great achievement otherwise only banning will not help because.
Eritrea have a law shoot to kill if any one leave Eritrea but 100,000 trying their luck so the ban is totally useless if it not supported by investment
I concur. No Ethiopian (or black African for that matter) should work as domestic worker in a Middle East country for obvious, repeatedly stated reasons. As that is currently hard to bring to a halt, I would at least like to see a few things put in place for the sake of our tormented sisters in and around The Gulf.
Ethiopia should immediately set up a labor agreement/contract with concerned countries that recognizes, among many things: minimum entry-level salary, weekly rest days and daily rest periods, paid vacation leave, non-withholding of passports and work permits, free communication, and most of all: HUMAN TREATMENT. The labor agreement/contract must unquestionably pertain all current domestic workers and retroactively compensate them. Designated safeguarding persons dedicated to questions regarding domestic workers should be appointed at embassies/consulates. A safeguarder must be erudite about the language, law & culture of the country in question; and always be on stand by. Last but not least we as a Nation must find practical ways to make sure those guilty of abusing our sisters do not go unpunished. That includes the State itself. Simply put it’s our god dam duty to make sure that Arabs, as individulas or Nations, understand that Ethiopian blood is precious, and that spilling it, comes with a price.
Something is fishy about this measure. Banning of all citizents’s travelling and their movement smells like harsh and commnist policy approach. If it only concerns illegal and trafficking issues, it may be okay, but don’t forget it could also be used as dragnet measure to control the freedom of movement. we should not take everything they say for granted and honest.
Read C’est moi Senait comment which was to the point.
You like Ass be Kittue open your fitlthy mouth and attack religion which is not responsible.
Axumites called Habesha (not your tribe) who accepted Coptic religion from those same Arbs called Egyptians and Syrians.
Arabs brought the two major religions, Coptic and Islam to Ethiopia.
What can you do dud? Slam your head against the wall.
Why you believe in Arab religion if you hate them. You were Pagan prior to 4th century.
Arabs are Christians and Muslims. Both have same gene.
I wish you remaind Pagan and the rest of Ethiopia could have got peace instead of this oppressive religion of yours which oppresses it’s own Axum and Amhara region Muslims since 1400.
You cry for those stupid Arabs when you are are worst than them in your back yard Ato dark age.
You killed tens of thousand of your tribes who differ from your religion in the north in 19th century for not converting to Kulobi Gabriel traditional religion of yours.
Axum native Tigrians who are Muslims can not bury their deads when even dirty dogs are allowed to be buried there in Axum. Dogs are respected more than Human beings.
Have you ever heard such barbaric people who do barbaric merciless crime on their own brother/sister for not believing in Egyptian Coptic religion.
You live in the dark and your eyes are oblivious to this inhumane and tortures crime which your religion approves it on others and yet you point your finger on those foreign cruel Arabs.
Arabs can kill each other for power. That is natural in human beings. Do not relate everything to religion. But Axum case is related to religion.
I Must agree with Beqa. They made it look like Ethiopia has all of a sudden turned into a North Korea or , yep you guessed it, Eritrea.
Actually, I think Ethiopia should give all women & Christians or non-Muslims travelling to the Middle east travelling, a crash course in what to expect when they travel to these throw backs’ countries.
Muslims everywhere are nowadays whining about being oppressed but everywhere they’re the ones doing the oppressing and the murdering.
Take it easy dude. It was the government in Addis who announced the ban.
BBC just picked it up word by word from the government website. No need to bark on the wrong tree.
Though I agree with the ban, I am suspicious on Woyane’s true intention. These are the same group who signed to export 100,000 maids legally to Saudi Arabia not long ago. So what give now?
On the annual Global Gender Gap Report, released by the World Economic Forum this week, Ethiopia ranked 118 out of 136 countries. Only ahead of three countries in sub-Sahara Africa.
Damn if they leave the country, damn if they stay at home. Our sisters are left between a rock and hard place.
By the way, everyone noticed how all laws in Ethiopia are implemented “effective immediately” overnight without any discussion or warning to affected parties?
