Ethiopia opens Africa's largest wind farm to boost power production
(Reuters) - Africa's biggest wind farm began production in Ethiopia on Saturday, aiding efforts to diversify electricity generation from hydropower plants and help the country become a major regional exporter of energy.
The Horn of Africa country - plagued by frequent blackouts - plans to boost generating capacity from 2,000 MW to 10,000 MW within the next three to five years, much of it coming from the 6,000 MW Grand Renaissance Dam under construction on the Nile.
The plan also consists of raising wind power generation to more than 800 MW and geothermal capacity to less than 100 MW.
The 210 million euro ($289.68 million) Ashegoda Wind Farm was built by French firm Vergnet SA with concessional loans from BNP Paribas and the French Development Agency (AFD). The Ethiopian government covered 9 percent of the cost.
"Various studies have proved that there is potential to harness abundant wind energy resources in every region of Ethiopia. We cannot maintain growth without utilizing the energy sector," Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn said in a speech at the launch.
GONE WITH THE WIND is the Diaspora losers with their hate politics!

What a great news!
Thanks again to the ambitious, practical and hard working govt of EPRDF! Without you and the visionary leader the great Meles Zenawi’s wise leadership, none of all the great things we see in Ethiopia would have come to reality.
Ethiopia does it again!
ESAT, Genbot7, Almariam and the hoard of good-for-nothing anti Ethiopia members of the toxic diaspora community will continue to lament denying true and solid evidences coming out of our country that it is a serious business as far as the EPRDF is concerned.
More good news will unfold in the months and years to come as Ethiopia is ranked as one of the fastest economies in the world.
Ethiopia is prospering and shall continue to prosper!

One region ” Limmat “
This is an article comes from the Ethiopians and Africans perspective about their own matters.
And then compare with the article written by the none African medians that are 99% if not 100% the English Medias covering the same story but with wrong figures and misleading approaches trying to undermine it. When it comes for bad and negative things, they are adding and multiplying the figures and repeatedly covering it. But when it comes to positive and good things, they are trying to minimize the numbers and trying to undermine or if possible hide it.
Just read the next one and read what the English media is talking about the same issue.
Ethiopia produces currently more than 2200 MW not 2000 as Reuters is intentionally lying about. 200 MW is a lot that some nations in Africa don’t have it in national level.
It is the same with other figures, too.
However, Ethiopia has a potential of:
1.3 million MW Wind
Limitless solar and other clean Energy sources in the pipe line.
Let them talk as usual; we have to do what we have to do which is the only thing makes differences and decide the outcome.
“As part of Ethiopia’s plans to become a major power exporter in East Africa, the state utility company said on Friday that it is building Africa’s largest Geothermal Power Plant.has signed an agreement with US firm Reykjavik Geothermal to build a giant $4 billion geothermal farm project.
The geothermal power plant, which will have power generating capacity of 1,000 Mega Watts will be used for domestic consumption and exported to neighboring countries.
The project will be built under two phases with the initial 500 MW phase expected to be completed by 2018. The whole project will be completed and will fully go operational by 2021.
Ethiopia which currently is building a number of hydro-power plants with billions of dollars investment aims to boost its energy production from the current level of around 2,200 MW to 10,000 MW by the end of the country’s five year growth and transformation plan launched in 2010.
The east African country has huge resources of renewable energy.
According to EEPCO, Ethiopia has an estimated hydro-power potential of 45,000 MW, a geothermal potential of 10,000 MW and an estimated 1.3 million MW from wind.
Beyond hydro-power plant projects, the country is also investing in wind and other green projects.
The wind farm, built in the northern Tigray region has a capacity of generating 120 MW of electricity.
According to Yoka, the wind farm is the largest wind power project in sub-Saharan Africa.
He further said that the French Development Agency will fund other green energy projects which are under way in Ethiopia.
Ethiopia plans to produce around 900 MW of wind energy by 2015.”
Mr. Addis zemen,
So, you hate all the Diasporas or something….
Dont you think most of them have contributions in Ethiopian development…..
And again, why do you have to comment on almost every news from Ethiopia with so much intensity and hate against the diaspora…
Take it easy sir, you can be more sophisticated or civilized in your way of commenting.
Your manner on the internet might also reflect your background or personality out there in real life.
I am not trying to disrespect you in anyway, but just be polite like most of the Ethiopians I know.
OPPOSITION DIASPORA JUMPING ON FREEWAY TRAFFIC, COMMITTING SUICIDE OUT OF ANGER!
In the Ashegoda area wind blows continuously and with force. Mekelle, the capital of Tigray is most of the time affected by the wind and it gets a bit dusty everywhere; as well it gives the residents a dusty look. It is good to see a positive outcome emerging from it.
Ethiopia has started to identify and use its natural resources and it is time to make bureaucratic reforms to reduce corruption.
God bless Ethiopia and it’s leaders. think positive always
Don’t waste your time tying to straighten Zetetam Banda Tegre like Zemen. This kind of Banda Tegres don’t understand politeness or civility. They think it is a sign of weakness. So, you have to hit them on the head and expose and destroy them before they take root. Don’t be naïve and try to get them online like normal human being. These are cancer that need to be removed by force. They are like a parasite that will not go away unless you remove it by destroying it.

I understand your outrage at the behavior of some the posters here. But it may be useful to know the different types of posters. Here are some categories.
1. The social media warriors. These are people who operate out of a secretive dungeon in a government office either in Addis Ababa or Asmara. Their task purely involves a propaganda war. Depending on who they work for, they call a perfume a fart, or a fart a perfume. They’re expected to.
2. The partisan and tribal psychotics: The most dangerous, most blood thirsty group. People in this group see everything along tribal lines. On the one hand, those who support the government among this group believe that one ethnic group has a god-given right to “rule” by whatever means. On the other hand, for those who are in the opposition side, nothing is palatable outside of the total obliteration of the party in power and a “final solution” for a particular ethnic group (it’s obvious)
3. The clueless. More benign than the above two but equally vocal. Two kinds of people fall into this category. Innocent, less informed individuals who indiscriminately ingurgitate everything that comes their way and basically vomit out. The second kind (and the busiest) are some who are physically and experientially removed from their home country and whose only connection to home is their memories of their fiercely revolutionary, ideological and violent long-gone pasts. They have seen the snake so they seethe with fear and apathy every time they see a twig.
4. The teasers: Those are just the monks that would tear up their turbans only to sew it back, for lack of occupation. They would throw anything that comes to their mind at the spur of the moment just to sit and enjoy the cockfight.
5. The mild and thoughtful. Very rare and rarely active. Those are well informed and can be critical supporters, objective opposers or simply apolitical. They can see an issue on its own, can see pro’s and con’s. Their biggest problem is that they’re darn too few and too occupied.
So, Dan, don’t feel outraged. If you go to a dog shelter, chances are you’re going to hear a lot of barking. Granted there are people there too, but the dogs will always out-bark them.

The honorable Dan (visitor) has given you a good advise, like I did for ages. Like my grandma used to say yesemahewn belebeh yasadereleh.
currently we pay for electricity and have access to the grid for (almost) free. Someday (soon?) that will be reversed. When electricity is home made and inexpensive, utilities will be in the business of maintaining the grid and selling access to it.
