Ethiopia is now 4th biggest flower exporter in the world
VIDEO: Ethiopia rose farms in export overdrive for Valentine’s Day
It is seven in the morning and 300 workers are arriving at the Gallica rose farm, a vast complex on the outskirts of the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.
Each year, the farm’s eight hectares of greenhouses produce around five million roses to be exported around the world.
But the run up to St Valentine’s Day is a particularly busy time of the year. Today alone, more than 20,000 flowers will be harvested.
"Here the cycle is about 80 days,” explains farm manager Gizachew Wondemu. “If you plant the roses 80 days ago, you get them now. So we try to prepare some of the varieties to come, mainly the red ones. We're always producing less than the demand."
Ethiopia is mainly known for its coffee. But the country’s agricultural sector is growing and, over the last 12 years and boosted by investment from the Ethiopian government, the niche market of flower production has boomed in particular.
“Far better is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat. “
- Theodore Roosevelt
Hey insignificant fleas, don’t come up with your usual “land grab” blabber.
As you can see it here, Ethiopia has left you behind and confused, while you’re looking and wishing for something to go wrong.
Oh, what a relief and visible optimism!!
The once was an example of poverty, hunger and starvation, war and suffering…. country, mother Ethiopia, the country that its citizens (those living abroad) felt ashamed of, for the fact that anyone (globally) new they came from a starving society and started judging them accordingly, is now the a rising star, not just in Africa, but globally. What a relief and pride!!!
Show me the flowers and I will show you the most pure water on the planet, Nile River the home of longest and natural water will soon be the same way as the largest pure electric capacity producer in Africa. Most will envious and regret dancing with the enemy of Ethiopian people, poverty. We will tell it good bye for once and for all. So diaspora will once again start making journey to their homeland and see each other on the streets of Addis, and say oh my God I know that guy, we use to drive taxi on the street in Washington DC. Just imagine one way or another most of us will be going back home around retirement and live like your grandfather, because being old age in the Western World have no respect for you, only home is the real place to cultivate the real red flowers and give it to your lover.
Yes while there are millions who we will see in a month or two, asking for emergency food aid because Ethiopia couldn’t support its demand for food, foreign companies grow flowers to export, and the treasonous government is 4th in the world exporting flowers. The day will come when the treason tplf lead government and all the parasite so called investors will be ousted, and we will grow food for Ethiopians on Ethiopian land to feed the hungry instead of flowers to feed the ever growing pockets of treasonous (Tplf)(banda ) and foreign parasites. Soon
And one of the most poluted places in the world .Those ignorantly hailing the so called
Economic Miracle .Must meditate ,on the destruction of the Eco System all arround Koka and Zwai Lakes . While Karaturi and Co. are milking the country ,local peoples are expoted not only to misery but also to Health Destructions .
The flower production in Ethiopia is said to have extremely degraded the environment and the soil. The former head of EPA Ethiopia, Dr Tewolde G/Elizabeth was voicing his concern on this issue. Hopefully, concerned officials are paying attention to this fact. Foreign company is are focused on temporary yield and not last g impact on the environment.
The very good health of a nation is a health of it’s people. Good government is the roots of it’s peoples wealth.
Wow, this is signifant leap from poverty to wealth in Ethiopian growth. What will be THE ESAT YEDERRG LIJOCH MIND about this? I am sure they will be happy. I said this because they didn’t call deminstration so far. I heard that one of them is discussing with Alamoudin to surrender their Army and their armaments in the basement at springfield va, where their crew is functioning. The Ethiopian gvt. Attacking them becauause they are a threat for them. Have you guys ever heard that when they criticize?
” To be a Surrogate for Weyanne due to selfishness is a weakness.”
Ethiopia’s land has proved that it is fertile, our citizens also has proved that they are hard working, what is holding us back from over all progress is Weyanne tribal policy and there , Egotistical,…..Greedy,……Self-centered,……Egocentric,……, Prejudiced,…..Mean,…..Narrow-minded,….Egomaniac,…..members like you….
Sorry, the above comment is intended to a
Yes, it is true. But, still we are the first state in the world living by begging food and other related items from the world rich countries. You know what I mean. We need a state who organize the hard working Ethiopian farmers using the right policy, laws and regulations and following the natural laws of conservation of our resources to produce more food and to make sure that every Ethiopian has access to food in order to sustain their life i. e. FOOD SECURITY.
Mr. Y. Abai,
Do not fool your self. Have you heard the recent news released by the world bank based on the Ethiopian government statistics still more than three million people need food aid for this crop season. The government is expecting the food aid as usual from the world richest countries. In short no relief until we are able to produce our food and self sufficient which we could not achieve since the Woyanes and the foolish cadres just like you are ruling the country with out justice, laws, regulations and order. Do not you know that the problem existed ever year because of human factor. I mean bad policy of the current government. Otherwise, the country has immense natural resources and hard working people. Do not include as an Ethiopian people your dumb masters and primitive thinking politicians and including the MAMO KILLO’s cadres like you. If you want more about the ABC of agriculture, I assure you that I am ready to teach you. What I expect from you are to give good ear until your consciousness level arise to the best level to make an argument based on science and skills you acquired. That is enough for you today. You can not understand even the meaning of food production and food security what they mean?
I got a lot of respect for ethiopians working hard to pull my country out of poverty. I will go back and contribute, hopefully. At times i disagreed with Meles, especially on landlocking business, but his economic and development vision was so so good….so good, my fear is that only he could pull it off. I hope i am wrong, and we will carry on.
Tired of diaspora shouting. Just contribute in a positive way.
Good thing that god blasts Ethiopia
You do not know the ABC of the growth and development of an economy, you talk about “TOWER IN THE SKY’ or in Amharic language “LAM ALEGNE BESEMAY: WETETUANEM ALAY” Do not expect any growth and development of the country since the misguided policies of the Woyanes are there.I.e.,” EFFORT” led economy of the TPLF strategies. Again,Mr. Amora, learn the mechanisms of how the economy of a given country is growing and developing towards the right way. TPLF propaganda can not converted in to breads and injera as well as wet or sauce or in your language AMBASHA for the broad masses of the Ethiopian poor people including the poor Tigreans.
