Ethiopia plans to build new international airport

ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia plans to build a new international airport on the outskirts of capital Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian Airports Enterprise (EAE) said Monday.

"The enterprise has already identified three locations for the construction of the new airport," EAE head of public relations Wondim Teklu told Anadolu Agency.

According Teklu, traffic through the city's main airport, the Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, is growing by 22 percent per year and a new airport is needed to accommodate the increases.

"Modjo and Dukem, respectively located 70km and 30km southeast of Addis Ababa, as well as Tefki, 39km west of the capital, are the suggested sites to build the airport," he said.

"Bidding will be arranged for consultancy to select the site and also for the design work," he added.

"Once the appropriate site is selected, the next step will be to look into the cost and financial sources for the construction of the airport," Teklu noted.

Simultaneously, the Addis Ababa Bole International Airport – which currently processes 150 flights a day – will be expanded with the use of a $225-million loan from the Export-Import Bank of China (China Exim).

China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) will carry out the work, which will include the expansion of the main passengers' terminal and construction of a modern VIP terminal, Teklu said.

"The expansion work will be carried out in a way to efficiently utilize space and give improved service to passengers," he said

The new terminal will be able to serve some 22 million passengers annually. The existing terminal can currently serve only 6.5 million passengers a year.

Teklu said that a previous airport upgrade ten years ago had increased the capacity of the airport apron to allow it to accommodate 45 large aircraft, up from a previous 19.

When the previous airport expansion project was undertaken at a total cost of 1.2 billion Ethiopian birr (roughly $62 million), it had been assumed that the airport would be able to absorb anticipated traffic increases until 2017.

Modjo and Dukem? What? Mekele baby. Mekele is not that far from Addis. Make these Hodam Amharas drive from Mekele to Addis. Also that heroic people deserves an international airport. On second thought it should be Adwa birth place of the visionary leader. Name it after him :).

I hope this is not going to be another waste of money for substandard airport as the existing one. It is so shocking to see how untidy and how rapidly it is deteriorating for so much money spend. go to the toilets and you will have the shock of your life, a total messs. I couldn’t believe my eyes when an old lady stood by the toilets handing in toilet papers. REALLY!! this is an airport with so many connection flights, and is an image of the whole country!! So Embarrassing!!

I think there is still room for growth at Bole. The airport authorities should entertain the idea of building addition run ways and even larger terminals than existing ones on the large swath of land currently at Bole before building another airport far way. Bole have the advantage being close to the center of the city.
Of course I am biased to Bole. growing up not too from the airport and taking numerous flights through Bole, I have a lot of fond memories about this airport.
Even if we decide to build another airport in 10, 20, or 30 years. We should keep this as a second airport for the city.
Cities like Paris,London,NYC, Chicago, Washington,LA have two or more airports which server their respective cities very well and give passengers an option. I hate those with single huge airport with no option like Atlanta.

Privitazation is one way to get financed and let the private companies, except Arabs speed up the process by investing their money on new Air port. And more small air port needed in future. And a possibility to start private domestic flight by Ethiopians without weyannes looters involvement .

Fabulous move! New international Airport is a MUST in a nation that is the second most populous in Africa and where else is best suited than Dukem or Mojjo? Perfect location … Bahir Dar is also an absolute beauty to build the 3rd international Airport in future…

@ new era

Just get off Amhara’s back, will ya? Skeletal frame Tsila :) Hodam is your likes who would eat like caterpillar and not even an ounce of grace. Amedam. Amharas have no purpose to step a foot in Mekelle let alone drive from Addis there! Your Mekelle baby is not ideal for international airport or international anything else for a million & one reasons. If you don’t believe me, ask your bosses

It is better to expand the bole airport. Is not convenient to drive 30km to catch a flight.

Settle,…

Do you remember the era of big rats infested fields around Bole airport.
I was maybe eleven or twelve years old, when we used to walk all the way from merkato to Bole, just for the sake of harassing those big white rats.
And of course looking at the runways and dreaming to fly away one day as a pilot or a passenger.

Bole will be kept as a secondary airport serving as a hub for regional and the growing cargo flights. In fact expansion is already underway. A new executive terminal and an additional aprons to accommodate the growing domestic flights are being undertaken by a Chinese contractor at a cost of $255 million US dollars.

The new airport is planned for expanding Int’l flights.

Way to go!!!.

You are dumber than a rock. You are ignorant and a shame to all Ethiopians, especially the beautiful people of Tigray.

Who do you think is going to use the airport? Poor Amharas like me? It’s everyone in the world. Go back to the cave you came from.

My vote is for Dukem . If the plan is building a larger Airport to accommodate the increasing service, the location needs to be near addis Ababa. All the other locations mentioned are too far. We need to consider the travelers as well as the flight crews of Ethiopian and all other Air Liens flying to Ethiopia.

I know why u get excited and become a horny toad every time Ethiopia fell in a debt! u or ur’s AMICHE/AGACHE kins will get a good amount of fare share and rip off from the loan initialy and as u SHIFTAS did the last 50 years all roads and bridges will be destroyed by KEHADI-WONBEDE bombs as soon as they are completed to get more loans.
