Let us celebrate The Ethiopian Millennium in the Sprit of Love and Unity!

CCEM Press Release

As the countdown to the Ethiopian millennium approaches, representatives of Ethiopian civic and political organizations as well as those from the Business community in the Washington DC area are organizing one of the most festive and reflective celebrations to mark this important historic event from September 7 to 12, 2007.

The council for the Celebration of the Ethiopian Millennium in Washington DC (CCEM) has reached out and invited various individuals, local and national government officials, and friends of Ethiopia to join our community in the celebration of this historic occasion. We have had the privilege of organizing a dinner party inside one of the Halls of US Congress , with the support of the Honorable Congressman Donald Payne, a true friend of Ethiopia and a champion of the cause of our people. We were able to raise a modest fund from the business community and individuals for the celebration and introduction of the Council’s objectives.

The Honorable Adrian Fenty, the Mayor of Washington DC, was also gracious enough to declare September 12, (Meskerem 1) as "Ethiopian Millennium Day". Mayor Fenty, who thanked our community for being a wonderful addition to the multicultural beauty of the City of Washington DC, has also requested the residents of the city to join the Ethiopian community in celebrating this important historic date.

The Council for the Celebration of the Ethiopian Millennium in Washington DC has set out elaborate programs for the celebration which include the following:

On September 7, 2007, Ethiopian Information Technology (IT) professionals in the US will gather at the headquarters of the World Bank in Washington DC and connect with IT professionals in London and Addis Ababa to confer on the future of IT for Ethiopia. The discussion, which is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., will explore various opportunities and challenges for bringing Ethiopia into the information age and make her the beneficiary of this rapidly growing technology;

On September 8 and 9, 2007, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., on each day, scholars and professionals of diverse disciplines will present papers at a symposium to be held at Howard University, Washington D.C.. The symposium would cover various issues on Ethiopia including history and culture, the arts and literature, politics and governance, economics and ecology, health and education;

On the evenings of September 8, a grand cultural show of Ethiopian music and dance will be featured at Stadium Armory in Washington DC. More than thirty Ethiopian prominent Artists from Ethiopia and Diaspora will participate in this grand Millennium Cultural and Musical show.

On September 10 and 11, we will be having an exhibition of Ethiopian arts and photography organized by the Ethiopian Artists. In the evenings, there will be film and theatre shows on Ethiopia.

On September 12, (Meskerem 1) Ethiopians will welcome their new year and their new millennium. Activities will include a parade called the "March for Democracy" that will start from the US Congress. The parade will celebrate our unity in diversity; express our determination to see Ethiopia as a united democratic country, free of oppression and poverty. Ethiopians will express their earnest desire and wish for Ethiopia where there is democracy, good governance, and rule of law and where the human rights of all Ethiopians are respected.

Ethiopians of all religions and ethnic backgrounds will join hands and demand that the new millennium should be one where human rights violations against our people will not be tolerated anymore. On this parade, African Americans, Jamaicans and Africans from other African countries and all friends of Ethiopia will join us. The Jamaican friends will have special performance for the occasion.

On September 12, (Meskerem 1), after the completion of the parade, starting from the late afternoon, Ethiopians will gather at the west side of the Potomac River by the Washington Monument for an evening of festivities, cultural and musical show.

The Council for the Celebration of the Ethiopian Millennium (CCEM) is committed to make the millennium celebration the most memorable. We call on all Ethiopians and friends of Ethiopia in the USA and elsewhere to join us to celebrate the passing of the old and Ethiopian Millennium the beginning of the new as an occasion for renewed hope and optimism for the progress of Ethiopia and Ethiopians. Let us celebrate together this great milestone and unique moment in our country’s age and transition to a new century and a new millennium with confidence and hope, to build a better future.

Press Release from Congressman Payne's Office

Congressman Payne calls for release of Inquiry Commission's report
Press Release
September 21, 2006

On Thursday October 19, Yalemzewd Bekele, 29, a human rights advocate, was arrested near the Kenyan border by Ethiopian security, while on her way to Kenya fleeing persecution.. In August 2006, during a visit to Ethiopia my delegation talked to Yalemzewd but was unable to meet with her face to face because of security concerns. Yalemzewd, who works for the European Commission in Addis found out late last week that a decision was made to arrest her. She decided to stay in her office to avoid arrest. After several days, she was asked by a senior EC official to leave the office.
Yalemzewd was betrayed by her own employer. Instead of protecting her, this official ruined her life. I strongly condemn this act and call on the European Commission to investigate this decision. Yalemzewd is in a detention center in Moyale, a small town near the Kenyan border. Alemayehu Fantu was also arrested on October 5. He was visibly tortured when he appeared in court on October 12, 2006 and may have been coerced into naming Ms. Bekele. Conditions in Ethiopia are going from bad to worse. Ethiopians are living in fear and they don’t know what to expect tomorrow, a true reminder of the torturous past. Under the circumstances there is enough indication that Ms. Bekele may be harmed while in detention. I call for the immediate release of these political prisoners.

For over a year, I constantly argued that the Ethiopian government used excessive force against innocent civilians. Many innocent civilians lost their lives. Parliament established a Commission of Inquiry to investigate the killings. The Commission interviewed dozens of people and spent months investigating and documenting what they saw and heard. When the time came to submit the report, parliament was adjourned a day early, denying the Commission the opportunity to present their findings. The decision was deliberate in order to force the Commission to change its findings. In August, I was told by a senior Ethiopian official that the Commission did not finish its work. After constant threat and harassment, the Chairman of the Commission and the Deputy Chair left the country with the report. Over the past week, a friend spoke to both the chair and deputy chairman of the Commission. They clearly stated that they “can not turn their backs on all those people who risked their lives to speak to us.” They said “the truth must come out and Ethiopians must know what happened in June and November.”

I have seen the reports and the video of the deliberation of the Commission. One can not question the quality of the work nor the authenticity of the documents. The faces of the Commissioners are clear to see and the message and conclusions loud and clear. The data presented in these reports and the videotaped testimony of the members of the Commission as they cast their votes further reveals the degree to which a systematic crackdown was in place. I repeatedly stated then and the Commission agrees that the Government used excessive force against civilians in June and November. I said then and I repeat again, those who gave the orders and those who carried out the order must be held accountable for this unspeakable crime.

The commission finally voted 8-2 that indeed excessive force was used. The committee chairman, Supreme Court Judge Frehiwot Samuel, stated that “many people were killed arbitrarily.” He stated further that “Old men were killed while in their homes, and children were also victims of the attack while playing in the garden.” An Ethiopian Orthodox priest, Estatiose Gebrekristos, was recorded as saying, "based on my eyes, ears and knowledge the actions taken were 100 percent wrong." We must never forget the victims. These are just a handful of the many who perished last year. Mathewos Girma, 14; Qasim Ali, 21; Legesse Tulu, 60; Tamam Muktar, 25; Etenesh Yimam, 50; Worke Abebe, 19; Debela Oliqa Guta, 15; Hassan Dula, 65. Etenesh Yimam was killed in her home in front of her family for simply asking why they are arresting her husband, who was elected in May. Etenesh is dead, her husband in prison, and her daughter in hiding somewhere in Africa. This is the more reason why we should pass H.R. 5680, Ethiopia Freedom, Democracy and Human Rights Advancement Act of 2006.

Latest update from The Coalition for H.R. 5680

September 16th, 2006

The Coalition for H.R. 5680 is informing all Ethiopians in the United States that H.R. 5680 (Ethiopia Freedom, Democracy and Human Rights Advancement Act) is stuck in the U.S. House of Representatives. Intervention of the House Speaker is urgently needed to move the bill to the House floor for a final vote.

The House International Relations Committee passed the bill on June 27, 2006. The bill has shown no movement in the House since that Committee took action.

Professor Alemayehu Gebre Mariam, who has written extensively on H.R. 5680, was asked to comment on this development for this press release. He stated: “I am not surprised. I guess Dick Armey (the Ethiopian Government lobbyist at DLA Piper), has earned his fee. Dick was the former Republican majority leader, and the right hand man of Speaker Hastert. I can imagine that he whispered in the Speaker’s ear that H.R.5680 would hurt U.S. anti-terrorism efforts in the Horn of Africa, Mr. Zenawi is really a good guy, and all of the other bogus reasons I have identified in my previous writings.”

The Coalition believes the bill has been delayed form reaching the House floor either because of Speaker’s Hastert’s opposition, or active lack of support for it.

Asked whether H.R.5680 was dead in the House for this year, Prof. Alemayehu stated: “Not by a long shot. We can still make it happen, but now we have to present our case to Speaker Hastert. I urge all Ethiopian Americans in the United States who support H.R. 5680 to contact the Speaker’s office by telephone, fax, email, or in person if possible and make the case to the Speaker that H.R. 5680 is about human rights and democracy and getting political prisoners released. Every one needs to call the Speaker’s office as many times as necessary to get the message across. I make a special plea to Ethiopians who live in Illinois, and those in the 14th congressional district in Illinois (Hastert’s district), to contact Speaker Hastert’s office and make the case for H.R. 5680. Realistically have less than four weeks to move this bill. It is now or never.”

Because of the time pressures created by the midterm elections, the Coalition urges H.R. 5680 supporters throughout the United States to contact their individual members of Congress, Republican and Democrats, immediately and without delay, and respectfully ask them to send letters and make calls to Speaker Hastert so that he will allow H.R. 5680 to come to the House floor for a vote.

Requests to Speaker Hastert to allow H.R. 5680 to proceed to the floor for a vote should be made immediately and without delay.

Formation of Alliance for Freedom and Democracy

May 22nd, 2006

Press Statement

Statement announcing the formation of the Alliance for Freedom and Democracy

May 22, 2006
A historic meeting convened, by the Coalition for Unity and Democracy Party (CUDP), the Ethiopian People's Patriotic Front (EPPF), the Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF), the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF), the Sidama Liberation Front (SLF) and the United Ethiopian Democratic Forces (UEDF), at Utrecht in Netherlands, from 19 to 22 of May 2006 has successfully completed by forming the Alliance for Freedom and Democracy (AFD) and elected its officers. The UEDF supports the formation of the alliance and its objectives and has requested a month to consult its member organizations. The formation of the Alliance is an outcome of a series of bilateral and multilateral discussions conducted in the past several months. The Founding Agreement has been unanimously accepted and ratified by all members of the Alliance. The formation of this Alliance reflects the aspirations and best wishes of all people in Ethiopia whose life has been blighted by political repression, marginalization and exclusion.

The ultimate aim of the Alliance is to establish a just, representative and a genuine democratic process through the convening of an all-inclusive conference where the country’s problems will be discussed and resolved.

We are confident that the formation of this Alliance will be a vehicle to eliminate mistrust and suspicion between political groups and communities so that all will work together in the spirit of mutual understanding and to the benefit and well-being of all. We believe the collective effort behind the Alliance will put an end to the existing destructive mentality of winner takes all and the habitual indifference towards the excluded. The Alliance aspires to purposefully cultivate the values of compromise, tolerance, inclusion, reconciliation and mutual understanding. That is the only way to end the underlying causes of repression, bloodshed, insecurity, political instability and exclusion in Ethiopia and the region, which are inflicting severe hardships and suffering on all people, and seriously hampers the prospects for development and the attainment of equality, justice and prosperity.

Time and time again the people in Ethiopia have risen up and paid unimaginable sacrifice to satisfy their yearning for freedom, justice, liberty and democracy. The struggle and the sacrifice that is being paid in relation to the May 15 2006 election is a recent addition to the series of quashed aspirations.

Our people have demonstrated their readiness and ability that a just and democratic political order is feasible in Ethiopia. What stands between the aspiration for freedom and democracy and its realization is the unwillingness of the incumbent EPRDF regime to submit to the expressed will of the people and its flagrant violations of human rights and civil liberties and failure to even respect and abide by its very own constitution.

The Alliance will therefore struggle to pressure the ruling party to stop frustrating the realization of the yearning for freedom and democracy. The Alliance would use its generous spirit of inclusiveness in convening the conference that would facilitate a way towards the establishment of a democratic and representative order.

We call upon all the people of Ethiopia, both at home and abroad, to rise up in unison to support the cause of the Alliance and struggle to make the convening of the conference, which paves the way for a democratic transition, a reality. The struggle should continue to challenge the current spate of repression in the country, halt the futile and destructive military campaigns, security crackdowns and end the farcical political trial of elected members of parliament and others and to free all political prisoners, including those detained in the small towns and villages.

We also call upon the international community to realize that dialogue and good-faith negotiation offers the only way to achieve a lasting solution and back the alliance's call for this all-inclusive conference to break the current impasse. We hope the international community will realize that peace and stability, sustainable development and good governance can be a reality in Ethiopia only when the disfranchisement of the many by the few is stopped and by bringing all the stakeholders together to chart a genuinely democratic course.

Ethiopian's problems are immense and grossly complicated. Convening an all-inclusive conference to address them is well over due. We do not underestimate the obstacles and challenges facing us. However, with patience and perseverance we are certain that we will succeed.

The Alliance would hold a Press Conference to lay out its vision and work programs in detail.

Freedom and Democracy for all!
