Ethiopia - Charges dropped in the brutal murder case of Ali Mohammed

By Tibebe Samuel Ferenji

Today, November 5, 2010, WTOP, Washington, DC based news reported that the US attorney’s office for the District of Columbia has dropped the charges against the alleged killers of Ali Mohammed of Ethiopia. Initially, the charge was dropped from second degree murder to aggravated assault.

According to the news, today, the US attorney’s office in Washington, DC stated that all charges are dropped against the alleged killers for lack of prosecution. According to the news, the US State attorney’s office stated that there is no evidence to go forward with any charges.

This was not what Councilman Jim Graham told us when he spoke during the candle light vigil held for Ali few weeks ago. He told us that the police have informed him that there is enough evidence to charge the men for the second degree murder from aggravated assault.

Was this an election ploy? We have got used to politicians who speak with their fork tongs to calm wave of protests. The alleged perpetrators said “They have not done any thing wrong”. A HUMAN BEING DIED AS THE RESULT OF THEIR BARBARIC ACTION, AND THEY CLAIM THAT THEY HAVE NOT DONE ANY THING WRONG? From the start the way the investigation was handled did not feel right; something was fishy. The statement from the police and from the medical examiner’s office contradicted. All these indicated a cover up in the making.

What happened to the witnesses who spoke to the police on October 15? Did any one buy their silence? Are they subjected to any threats? We need to do what it takes to make sure that Ali’s killers are brought to justice. Investigators need to be hired and investigate about what exactly happened that night. The cover up must be exposed. The US attorney office is telling us that there is no evidence? Despite the fact there is evidence in a form of a dead body! How did the witnesses disappear in a thin air? We need to demand independent counsel to be appointed to look at in the way the case is handled. There is also a civil rights violation; thus the FBI and department of Justice need to get involve in this investigation.

It is stunning that today in Oakland California, a white police officer was sentenced for two years imprisonment for killing an unarmed black man. Is the KKK doctrine that says the only good “N” is a dead “N” making a come back? Is Ali’s religion and his color or creed played a role in US attorney’s office decision? At a time where anti Muslim sentiment is growing in this country, a decision to allow an alleged killers of an innocent young Muslim man get away with murder a politically correct thing to do?

It is Ironic that at the time that we Ethiopians are commemorating the murder of hundreds of innocent Ethiopians by a brutal regime in our homeland five years ago that we have learn the injustice committed against one of ours by the “justice system” that money can buy.

Please do not be silent. Make your voice heard. Let us Unite and show everyone that we will not let this go until we know the truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth. I am puzzled and stunt by the fact that the charges against Ali’s alleged killers is dropped by the US attorney’s office three days after the election and few days after Councilman Jim Graham told us, publicly, that the police have told him that there was enough evidence by the medical examiner to upgrade the charges from aggravated assault to murder. What transpired between then and now? Were we given misinformation by the councilman? We need to know the truth. Please call US Attorney General Eric H. Holder, Jr. at (202) 514-2001; FBI Director Leon Panetta at (202) 324-3000; and the US State’s attorney office for the District of Columbia. DO not let this go please! Tomorrow it could be you or your loved once, You can count on it!

This tells me that our voices does not matter anymore or we are not united enough. Given the number and resources we have in this country,we could do more and demand more answer to this.

If what is said here is true, the repsonse should be all out war. I call upon the entire Ethiopian community at DMV, to respond in the harshest way possible. Hundreds might have come out last time, thousands should this time around. I am tired of Ethiopian blood being spilled in vain. Learn from what just happened in Oakland.

I am very devastated! with all the investigation process and court system on this murder case. How come without the final result of the Medical Examination the court/Attory office set free the murderers? How come a normal person dies with no falt of those who beat and stomp him to death on the streets DC? How is they set up every thing to the best of the people of money and color?
WE DEFINITLY NEED THE TRUTH! WHEN NOW! NOW! NOW! NOW! NOW! NOW! NOW! NOW!

this is a very sad day for us as American and most of all as Ethiopians! what can we expect from this corrupt system if a young man gets killed in front of tens maybe hundreds of on lookers and the people who did this to him just get set free? as my brother Roberts said, the medical records are not even finalized yet and judge frees those killer. there must be something fishy going on, as we heard those people have big connections with the politicians in DC and money talks in this corrupt society.
we need to stand up and defend ourselves because the law isn’t doing anything to defend us clearly!
lets get up and make our voice heard, because this is just the binging of the worse in future. if we keep quite now this will repeat itself in the future. we need to show them the power we have once and for all.

this is unbelievable my people, this is unheard of even in the country where the government kills people openly on the streets, they will find someone accountable and charge them.

stand up now!

It’s so fucken frustrating. If you are black, the justice is not only blind but dumb and deaf too. Oscar Grant (in San Francisco) was shot and killed by an officer in front of so many people and the guy who killed him was set free. And look what is happening to Ali Mohammod. Had it was a white guy who was killed it would have been a whole different story. It’s high time for us to get our fat asses together and fight for our equality and right. I feel the justice sytem is getting back to the pre civil right movement era.

If Americans were just people, and democractic as they try to deafen our ears, there was no need for Ethiopians to protest in favour of ALi. Justice should have delivered in its full fairness.

However, America is the most racist nation on the planet. It is most unfair society. It is the most unequal society on the planet. Do you know there is no black states in America. It is this America who try to teach us democracy.

Fuck America. Ethiopians, leave that fucken racist country and go back home. East west home is best. Even if with poverty home is home. I have seen this thing happenning all over the world to Ethiopians. It is not America. 4 Occcasions, 4 Ethiopians were shot dead cold bloodely in Cape Town city by white racists there. But the killers were set free with no charge. In South Africa Ethiopians are actually hunted by kindney syndicates. What they do, the kill them and take them for medical investigation then the take all the kidney and give the back the looted body.

I think we have to find a solution for our problems in our country than exposing ourselves to this type of subhuman treatment.

Why in the first place we go to America leaving that beautiful country Ethiopia? why we did not solve our problem at home? Ethiopia has more to offer than America in real.

I do not think they will care about Ali. In the Americans 10 commandements, Americans citizens are first in any scenario. No matter what, Americans first before any citizen and they are more likely to be set free even if they commit crimes. Americans are immune to everything they do. They can kill, loot, rob,… except the citizens of other nations.

They are not fair to thier citizens of black race leave alone to immigrants. I do not expect justice in America. There is no justice in America. In America money rules. America is a rotten society, violent, corrupt, immoral, … nation. There can never be justice in such wanton nation.

Do you know Americans developed Viruses to kill South African blacks during aparthied. American government then funded a big project to eradicate blacks South Africans and the viral research to develop biological weapon was done by Americans. This has been told by Doctor death of Aparthied during the commissions investigation. Americans are wicked people.

Let me think like Gragn Ahmed, what if Ali wa connected to Al qaida? Just what if!! First set aside ur religious and ethnic diffence and be united. Then u can talk about Ethiopiawinet. Don’t ask for help when u r in trouble, when somebody kick ur ass. Go and ask your arab brathers for help. Tell me if he was wahabist muslim or Ethiopian muslim then and only then I will take part in any demonstrations. I hate muslims following wahab version of Islam most of them are illitrate seltes who think they are arabs not Ethiopians.

I believe the U.S.A. still the best place to live. There really is racism but we have got it easier than blacks who lived decades ago. It has a democratic system better than anywhere in the world. Yes injustice happens from time to time and when it happens people who have good conscience do express their opposition to injustice in a civil way and American system does accommodate that; therefore what we need to do now is to make sure that we can do what civilized people do. We have to make sure that miscarriage of doesn’t happen. Lets get to the streets, lets higher the best investigators. Lets show them who we are legally. Lets not rush to judgment that Ali’s has any thing to do with. The fact that Ali is from Ethiopia, poor and black may have more to do with it. Religion also could have an impact but the best way to go about this case is not just assume but take action. Any self respecting human(Ethiopian) should not rest until this case is satisfactorily concluded. I will never rest till the end and I hope Everyone else does the same. Thank you so much for this great Article.

What kind a judge?
Blood on the street?
Witness?
Killers admitting?
If the guy was able to throw a brick through a window and is dead 5 minutes later,
Is America turning into a country of legal manipulation that creates all kind of loopholes that the very system that creates to protect the puplic from injustice is used for the rich and strong ones.

what is very troubling here is that we may never know the truth. That police commander and towns person were very very wrong to give media statements so early. The investigation seems corrupt, but of course it’s how the USA works. My sympathies go to Ali’s family, no decent Ethiopian and Muslim should go through this.

After reading the news, I believe we ALL must ask these questions..

What is taking the medical report so long to finish? Are they looking for drugs or hidden disease in his system? Shouldnt evidence of a man beaten to death be easily seen or found?

Did the police hide something to protect themselves? Perhaps they beat Ali or mishandled him, then placed the blame on the 5 men?

The internet has the document released by the examiner. After reading it, I am thinking that we are all being deceived. It looks
as if the police are covering for their own well being.

We must demand the truth! Look at the picture above-two black men! It would not surprise if the police beat Ali, or perhaps had a stroke when the he was subdued by the group and the police mishandled the situation. How easy it is to blame to blacks, young laborors, and perhaps a powerless club owner? I also read that the club will close due to lack of funds, so I do not believe that this club man has any power or influence in this city. Remember the town man of that area was very quick to condemn the owner.

Are they murderers who deserve wrath? Are they victims of a corrupt policy system whose lives are forever shamed? Just tell us the truth! This is ‘America’, if the police are to blame then let it be known. Ali is gone, but his family should not be deceived!

God, i wish they spend in jail for some time just for the sake of his dad and the rest of the ethiopian community. hey, it is what it is. the rest of the people should learn from this. do not go to night club or if you do, do coply with their rules, and do not mess with those people.

RAMATOHARA,
Ali was truley Ethiopian. I know the kid since ten years ago, who have helped him and his friend graduate from Washington DC high school. He is the most liberal minded and care less about any religious other than being proud Ethiopian. Few month ago i have seen him in Washington DC again and truely funny with lots of joks and humer person. He has no connection with any religious or group, other than young men like him who lives in the area. He was working dead end jobs and furstrated life in America sometimes brings intrested about returning to his beloved country Ethiopia. I wish know him better this fine young men who truely is an Ethiopian. He spoke fluent Amharic grew up in Addis and America, the most modern kid who cares nothing about religious other identify himself proud Ethiopian. If we can not support a person like him, i do not know who Ethiopian will support. Let’s do whatever we can to bring the killers to justice. It is not fair to sit and watch these killers walk free. They deserve to be behind bars. So, this time around, it will test our strength and unification to our humanity. It is pure justice, leaving our poltical and ethnic, ethnic and religious diffrences. The justice system takes time. Atleast we can say we have something in common, fought for our brothers who needed us the most, it will be a story telling time to your children that we are unified who identify ourselves Ethiopian-American.

I JUST LEARNT THAT THERE WILL BE A DEMONSTRATION INFRONT OF THE DC ATTORNY OFFICE DATE TO BE DECIDED SOON!

WE NEED TO DO ALL IT TAKES TO GET JUSTICE BUT ALL IT TAKES IS DETERMINATION BUT NOT VIOLENCE BUT MONEY $$$$$$$, WHICH WE CAN DO IT WITH OUR NUMBER/ANY OTHER DONATION FROM WHEALTHY ETHIOPIAN HERE AND BACK HOME.

NOW, TO ME ONLY THE PICTURE OF THE BLOOD ON THE STREET AND THE INITIAL POLICE AFFDAVIT WERE SUFFICENT EVIDENCE AT LEAST NOT TO DROP THE CASE UP UNTILL THE RESULT OF THE DC ME.

OK, BECAUSE OF SETTING THEM FREE THEY ARE FREE TO GO ANYWHERE ELSE OTHER THAN US! BUT MICHEAL VICK WAS HELD AT ALL TIME SINCE THE DOG FIGHT WAS REPORTED. VICK WAS SENTENCE 23 MONTHS FOR DOG FIGHTING; A BLACK YOUNG MAN KILLED AND RESPONSIBLE FOR HIS DEATH WERE HELD BY AUTHORITIES (EVEN FIRED FROM THIRE JOB_THAT INDICATE THEY DID SOMETHING WRONG) THEN THE JUDGE SET THEM FREE WITH LESS THAN THREE WEEKS AS IF SUFFICENT EVIDENC TOOK PLACE AND HE/SHE GOT TO JUDGEMENT/DETERMINATION (NOT EVEN COMMON IN AFRICA COURTS). IT IS A CLEAR UNJUST WHICH OUR AA BROTHERS AND SISTERS WERE HAD IT SINCE LONG.

WE DEFINITLY NEED AN INVESTIGATOR THEN SUE ANY AUTHORITIES INVOLVED INCLUDING ATTORNY OFFICE, DC POLICE, AND DC MEDICAL EXAMINER OFFICE FOR LETTING THESE MURDERER GO FREE FOR ANY PAIN AND SUFFERING CAUSED BY THIS. MAINLY SUE THE CLUB.

Smart solutions;

Peaceful demonstraion in mass is one way.

Let me also add that there are a lot of international organizations, like Human rights watch or Amnesty international or national groups for Justice where we can coordinate our efforts to seek justice for the minority, and helpless like Ali. D.C. being an international city also makes it hard for this judge ot to escape media attention. One route is to let some African and Middle eastern or European nations embassies know about it. Also, why not let Al Jazeera know and investigate?

But, above all, it will matter how much money we are willing to spend. Unlike Romatohara’s prediction, today I think differently.

Finally, Ethhiopian’s blood is spilling over without any cost that comes with it. I heard through relatives that things of similar nature happened in the past in Columbus, Ohio. A white woman killed an Ethiopian boyfriend. She was able to get away.

Also, have you noticed how many Ethiopian store cashiers/owners have died in Atlanta, Kansas, Memphis, all over the states just because they were Ethiopians. I have not heard any Nigerians who had been killed to this degree or even the more common Indians. May be more Chinese or Korean store owners have died.
Do killers premeditate to kill us. If so why?

I know Haile said we are not black. But I would have no idea this illiterate people would have heard any history from their peers.

Over all, this time it will be difficult to escape the fate of justice if our spirit is united d.c.being a spot light international city.
