Ethiopia: The Evil Genius of Meles Zenawi

By Girma Hadas

Fasiladdisu@gmail.com

As the Ethiopian tradition dictates when someone dies it is proper to express condolence to the family of the deceased. In line with this tradition I must say to his family and relatives who are mourning his passing from the point of view of personal relation than with political affiliation and party loyalty. Meles was a leader I knew since I came of age and once upon a time I had had the chance to serve as a diplomat under his administration.

The take over of power from Lij Eyassu in 1916 by Ras Teferi (although it was Empress Zewditu who was at the top the real executive power was rested upon the regent Nigus Teferi) latter coronated as Emperor Haileselasie in 1930; and the dethronement of the latter in 1974 by Mengistu Hailemariam/ the Derg/ had witnessed the killing and imprisonment of thousands of able and educated Ethiopians that can change the nation to the better. The murder of Aman Michael Andom, Teferi Benti and Atnafu Abate by the Derg can also be seen in this light. The toppling of Mengistu Hailemariam from power by TPLF/EPRDF led forces in 1991 has a cost of tens of thousands of lives in a period of seventeen years. No matter what the situation, it is my hope that this country of ours which had passed through unimaginable disastrous circumstances at different times in its history will survive and continue to flourish by the grace of God!

As a former diplomat of the late Meles Zenawi administration, I will try to look the system thoroughly by taking in to account the actions taken and policies adopted by the late prime minister and why he put certain people in selected places. In doing so, I will try to explain how Meles’s plans and ideals, specially since the last three years, were devised in such a way as to continue and safeguard the interest of TPLF and EPRDF even after he slept for eternity. Nevertheless, no matter what is planned and done Ethiopia and its political environment as we knew it under Meles for the last twenty one years will not be the same after his departure. Because, Meles has been the alpha and omega of EPRDF and his separation will clearly damage the party’s ability to cope with unprecedented scenarios both in the local and international arena. I cant quote no one other than his successor Hailemariam Desalegn in this respect. He refered to him by saying ‘no one will replace Meles Zenawi.’ By ‘no one’ if he meant from among EPRDF members then I concur. So, as a system whose core or regulatory and controlling organ has been affected will not function properly so is true for EPRDF after the death of Meles:- its shepherd! This is same as what the scriptures say 'God will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.'

Unlike the perception of many people, it must be understood that Meles’s death is not accidental or sudden. He obviously had a medical condition that could not be cured and eventually turned deadly. Pretty much cancer related condition. If people believe he died by a health issue which he was unaware of ahead of time they must think again. My former bosses undertake medical check-ups and treatment in Europe, America and Thailand. They attend these services even for non-life threatening cases. This simply comes with being a top cadre that are willing to serve the regime. So, if the sheep have it so does the shepherd even in greater way. Let alone a life long smoker like Meles, he quitted since couple of years ago, anyone would undertake check ups so as to follow up their health and prolong it by taking any precautions necessary based on the diagnosis. So, I believe, Meles had discovered that he is a cancer patient in one of such similar check-ups and not only informed about it he was also told how many years he will live. As we all know such condition is not unusual in Europe and America where many people are diagnosed with cancer and told the number of days, months or years left in their time account. In Ethiopia where people have neither the finance nor the culture to do such medical check-ups it is understandable if the have no knowledge of it.

It is my understanding that once Meles had this bitter discovery he has been taking policy and tactical actions since the last three years that will help him garner public support and guarantee him regime security and continuity in the aftermath of his death. To this effect he has selected his real and nominal successors, devised the Chinese based economic model, created popular agendas and put forward the legal and political framework by which elections and multi-party politics is governed by. All these attempts were meant to keep in place the TPLF led EPRDF in power for future generation long after he is gone. The points;

In the 2010 national election Meles Zenawi enabled his wife Azeb Mesfin to run for a seat in parliament. She won, as did 99% of EPRDF and their allied parties, in an election marred by fraud and irregularities as the European Union, Human rights Watch, Amnesty International and other media organizations latter confirmed in their report. As a result she has become a legislator in the Ethiopian parliament and a central committee member both in the Tigray People Liberation Front /TPLF/ and EPRDF. Besides, she has gotten even bigger when she became the chief executive of EFFORT* /Endowment Fund for the Rehabilitation of Tigray/. So, in the eventuality of Meles’s death it is hoped Azeb Mesfin would stand on her own and impact and control the party using her husband’s loyalists both in the military and security apparatus.

Two years ago Meles replaced his deputy Prime Minister Addisu Legesse of Amhara National Democratic Movement /ANDM/ with Hailemariam Desalegn. A rather unknown political figure from a rather weak party that formed the EPRDF called Southern Peoples Democratic Movement /SPDM/. Besides deputy prime minister he is also posted as a

*A conglomerate of a number of companies owned and run by TPLF members and worth billions of birr. It was first founded after they controlled central power in Addis Ababa using the resources TPLF owned during the secessionist struggle. Most of it was obtained by robbing Ethiopian banks, using food aid meant to be for hunger stricken Ethiopians and other resources obtained from the former Ethiopian government. They use what they got from Ethiopia for the good of Tigray region that they came from.

foreign minister. It is my belief that letting Addisu take the premiership in the case of Meles’s death is assumed to be a risk TPLF wont let happen. Because, unlike Hailemariam, Addisu is a veteran of the armed struggle with strong supporters from his party ANDM. So, it is believed that Addisu will not be a puppet that could be easily manipulated by TPLF members. Besides, it is also feared, as TPLF always does since they came to Addis, that if TPLF show any weakness the Amharas would snap and take their power. So, Meles preferred some one who have little backing from its own regional party and who got no role in the years of armed struggle, if so that person will not have a sympathizers in the army or security. The selection of Hailemariam is a direct result of this calculation. They wanted him to be the placeholder and be the face of the government so as to give the message that TPLF has left the post to a non Tigre. No less, no more! In so doing TPLF can do good to itself in two ways. One, it gives the misleading signal that the system accommodated non Tigre even in that top level. On the other hand this will enable to continue TPLF economic and political dominance by playing the puppet prime minister they put in place. So, that is how the selection ended up with the selection of Hailemariam- a sanitation engineer with protestant upbringing.

The post of Foreign Minister added to Hailemariam seems rather temporary for me. It is just meant to be a warming up post until he takes over the premiership once Meles is out of the picture. Once Hailemariam takes the premiership it is obvious a hard core TPLF member, most possibly current state minister of foreign affairs Berhane Gebrekristos, will take full control of Foreign Ministry.

Than ever before, since the last two years, Meles engaged in formulating and implementing popular agendas that seats well with the Ethiopian people. He propagated the agenda of the renaissance dam/ Hidase Gideb/ on the Abay river against the outcry and opposition of the downstream countries. He also expanded the road network, residence and business constructions, released Derg political prisoners against the discomfort of many hard line EPRDF cadres. Unlike what he used to call as a hundred years history he has admitted and promoted the long and proud history of Ethiopia. In general he began to engage in bigger and greater Ethiopian agendas leaving aside petty and parochial politics he hang on to for eighteen years. Meles had used these endeavors as an important means of bridging the gap he created between the Ethiopian people because of his own policies in the past. His bluff of calling the Ethiopian flag an ordinary textile, his refusal to ask for an access to the see to Ethiopia, his ethno-centric political and federal system, his domination of the federal government by his own ethnic group, imbalanced development activities in his regional base and that of the rest of Ethiopia and many others are the causes of the contradiction between him/his party and many other opposition Ethiopians.

To be continued,

This is actually one of the more plausible scenarios. I look forward to the next edition. Another possible scenario could be that Meles was trying to ensure that Azeb has the best shot to take over the party chairmanship and the deputy PM position.

Thank you for sharing your analysis.

Just some feedback though, before you post your essay to public consumption, please do read through for grammar, logic and spelling check. Otherwise, some people may use such shortcomings to trash the content of your piece of article.

For example - Hailemariam is not a sanitation engineer as your put it. He is a civil engineer who specialized (did his masters) in Sanitary engineering from University of Helsinki (Finland). Similarly, at one point you wrote …"his refusal to ask for an access to the see to Ethiopia” to mean …."his refusal to ask for an access to the sea to Ethiopia". These are few picks. There many corrections to make.

Hope it helps.
Waiting to read your follow up piece!

The problem of Meles’s government was to have engaged such Derg or old thinker diplomats. While trying to found new Ethiopia old thinkers such as this diplomat would have been set aisde. The Ethiopia that we aspire and the old thinkers are quite different.I wonder howlong should such neftegnas would day dream !!!! Ethiopia shall prevail!!! It will not if such thinkers come to power however !!!

Certainly that this evil guy has never left the political stage without preparing the future specially for his wife .Ato Habtemariam is a part of his evil plan to perpuate Tigrean rules on the country .A puppet Prime Minister
under control by an Agazi Shadow Cabinet shall assume the transition until 2015 .And then at the next fake election once again assuring the victory to the Agazi Bandits the
evil Azeb shall rise as the natural
leader of the ruling party and as the next Despot .But unfortunatly for them ,at the same time vindictiveness and thirst for power
from the Agazi military apparitus ,the veterans of the movement to the warlords, leading the fake ethnical fake parties submitted to them and forming the coallition ,are on the eve of an eruption and an earthquake .Not only the Crime Minister but also TPLF is on the eve to pass away .The
problem if we late things worsening ,there’s a serious risk that the country may sink in a total cahos the same as Somalia or Liberia under the laws of local milicias and warlords .

Still hate politics - Mr ‘Girma Hadas’ - you still don’t know what Ethiopia or Tigray region look like.

You still are trapped by hate politics.

Why don’t you get a visa and fly from where you are to see if Tigray is more developed than the rest of Ethiopia? Most of the aid money came to Ethiopia to rehabilitate war devastated areas.

Tigray deserves much of it since most of the war took place there. But the funds are being used by the Government everywhere.

You are only attempting to divide Ethiopians as Tigraynas and not, but that is an old trick!

1) The 2010 elections ‘marred by fraud and irregularities’?

In 2010 the oppositon was already divided by its own cause and weak. Why would EPRDF need to make fraud and irregularity?

2) Girma - whether you are parat of Eritrean propaganda machine or Ethiopian hate political blog, why do people like target EFFORT? Just work hard to have such endowment funds in your country or region!!! We need more EFFORTS, we need more MIDROCs… Let’s create more rather than envying what others have…

If Azeb or other AEPRDF leaders mess-up with EFFORT, let EPRDF or people of Tigray worry.

There is too much to do. Do you get ir or would you still continue to bark???

Girma,

I don’t know what kind of diplomat and in what capacity you were serving the MoFA. But from what you scribble here I deduced that you were of some very lower position. Because it shows from your ‘analysis’ that you don’t have an idea let alone an inner circle information about EPRDF or the Government of Ethiopia.

Any one can guess that you’re stupid at least for two reasons. One, how come you served for long if you already knew that the Meles administration is evil?

Two, if you don’t know that they were that evil, how can we, the smart people, take your word as it’s evident that you’re so dull that you couldn’t figure out the system you are working in.

Meles the greatest leader is dead. He is not here to defend himself now. Remember you’ll die too; may be very soon. Don’t act as if you’re immortal. So, stop back biting the system you worked in just because you were unable to manipulate it for undeserved personal gain. Go get a job, work hard and you’ll get where you wanted to be. There is no short cut.

I agree with your opinions to the most part but I disagree that Meles died of cancer and he was well aware of his fate before months or years.

If he really died of cancer, the Woyanes would have announced that Meles died of cancer. I do not see any reason why the TPLF has to hide the cause of death unless he died of lung cancer which is mostly attributed to a chain smoker. Note that smoking is not morally acceptable to most Ethiopian.

It is highly unlikely that Meles knew his death before hand. If a person is diagnosed with cancer, he should have been admitted to hospital on and off for Chemotherapy treatment and Ethiopians would have known that Meles’ absence from the public and Chemotherapy’s side effect of hair loss and more.

Knowing that Meles is a narcissistic dictator, he would have gone to chemotherapy even if he knew that he can live for six months or year. This is a coward dictator who thinks he can defy death.

My hunch is that Meles died from a disease that the Woyanes’ are not comfortable to disclose to the public for fear of God-like image portrayed by TPLF TV (ETV).

Mr. Girma Hadas,

Your analysis looks based on the close observation of the dictator triabal junta’s original mission and his developing medical situation in recent years. But one thing I am not clear is your sentence which says tha"if TPLF show any weakness the Amharas would snap and take their power". What do you mean their power. Which Amara was on power in ethiopian history? Actually I guess Tewedros which didn’t have any royal history(from simple and poor farmer family) tried to reunite fragmented ethiopia for 85 years by local nobles. After that all rules until triabal Meles (whose mission was to take back ethiopia again to local nobles) were mixed race ethiopians who love ethiopia and ethiopians though dictarors. Ethiopia has been ruled for the first time in its long history by Meles who didn’t love ethiopia and ethiopians.

Very interesting and informing for those who are not clear on Tigrea Dictatorship’s agenda or misleaded by the two faced snake, Meles when purposely tried to appear as if he cares for Ethiopia after his initial hate on Ethiopia action shocked Ethiopians.

Meles was the Alpha and Omega of TPLF. Without the head of the snake the tail is only hanging and zigzagging in the dark. All of TPLF old outdated goons love power and money and Azeb, the one even with the biggest appetite for money is sitting on their head.

Those TPLF arrogant goons are scrambling over for power and money by ignoring the majority of Ethiopians desire to live in a democratic leadership.

God the almighty has removed the head of the snake and it will not be long before the rest of the tail is disintegrated.

I saw the memo sent to you embassy staffers.
R e s p e c t guys. Talk about issues instead of one liners.

He has a right, as Bale_Mebet said, to tell his side of the story he knows as a carrier diplomat and as an Ethiopian. If you think other wise let us hear your side of the story. Educate us why Azeb is still staying around at any capacity around government functions or business area? Tell us why Meles let Derg members who are responsible for thousands of lives and undemocratic actions and throw people who are exercising their right by writing articles according to the constitution?

Fano,
you said to Girma H.
‘…Why don’t you get a visa and fly from where you are to see if Tigray is more developed than the rest of Ethiopia? Most of the aid money came to Ethiopia to rehabilitate war devastated areas.
Tigray deserves much of it since most of the war took place there. But the funds are being used by the Government everywhere.’

what are you talking about?
War devastated areas? Tell me the devastation in numbers if you know? Don’t you think the capital investment in tigray the last 19years was not enough to take care of the devastation?

let me also bring a challenge to you about EFFORT, talk about their budget and how they acquire their billions of birr capital. Make sure to show us the difference between Effort’s private account in banks and government banks(the latter should belong to all Ethiopian people). Make me feel better about their business practices and the role of the government. What government body is responsible to check their fair business practices.
Do they pay taxes? How do they acquire government and aid money contract? What about import and export? what about the time table where EFFORT and government stop ’sending money to tigray’ only for the purpose you stated above? Do they(effort) have the break down of their expenditure to tigray people and infrastructure? After all, all Ethiopian should be happy to see the development in tigray as part of development in Ethiopia.

Let us exercise our right with responsible manner and with out those ‘duriye’ words I see once in a while. Especially, live our moms and dads out of our hate.
Take care.

No matter what the president accomplish , there will be a fraction of the population that will never accept his race. They will find and create issues to hid behind and disguise their racism. Similarliy, the writer and the Ethio -Birthers will create and fabricate issues to deny the PM’s devotion, dedication and accomplishment to the country. Sadly, the Ethio-Birthers are completely detached from current realities in the country and abandoned by the people. No matter what, the country is marching on, and that is the reality.

Girma Hadas starts his article with a big promise by saying:

“As a former diplomat of the late Meles Zenawi administration, I will try to look the system thoroughly by taking in to account the actions taken and policies adopted by the late prime minister and why he put certain people in selected places.”

He continues as follows:

“So, I believe, Meles had discovered …”

The he says:

“It is my understanding that once Meles had this bitter discovery …”

And further he says:

“It is my belief that letting Addisu take the premiership…”

Clearly Girma Hadas has failed to deliver on his promise. He promised “to look at the system thoroughly”, but instead what he delivered is pure speculation, conspiracy theory and personal opinion.

The author may have been a diplomat or not, we do not know the facts. But let us suppose, for the sake of argument, his claim that he worked as a diplomat is true.

Then a question arises about his seniority on the diplomatic scale or how privy he was to the many secrets of the EPRDF/TPLF?

It is also relevant to know the true circumstances of his departure from the diplomatic service, as possible overlaps or conflicts of interest will throw some light on this article’s degree of impartiality.

Girma Hadas said:

“His (Meles’) bluff of calling the Ethiopian flag an ordinary textile …”

There should be no myth or superstition attached to a flag. Flags are manmade. Flags change or become updated as the ideals (usually as understood by the rulers of a country) of a country change. Most flags are also made of textile.

By the way, when was the basic Ethiopian tri-colour (Green, Yellow, and Red) used first?

He also says:

“… his (Meles’) refusal to ask for an access to the see to Ethiopia.”

What does “ask for access” mean? Is this a formal letter to be sent to Isaias Afeworki asking for the transfer of a sea port to Ethiopia? What if the answer is a firm no? Will Girma Hadas volunteer to fight to get a seaport or is he going to direct the fight by remote control?

In the Sahel and many parts of Eritrea, I have seen many bones and skeletons. Most of these belong to the Derg’s Ethiopian army. Most of these also belong to Oromo soldiers of the Ethiopian army. Girma Hadas, who is going to be cannon fodder this time?

People such as Girma Hadas have no clue about Eritrea, about what makes that country thick, its social composition, demography and general dynamics. They have a preconceived idea of Eritrea through speculation and rumours.

My personal position, supported by facts and analysis, is that the Eritrean secession issue is the agenda of Muslim lowlanders. It was initiated, incubated, and given shape by Egypt. The proof is that the ELF was established at Al Azhar University in Cairo. The Christian highlander has no business or profit from this issue.

But for one reason or another, the Christian highlander was conned and dragged into the conflict. By the time of the evil Derg, matters have gone out of hand (with the idiotic diplomatic skills of the Derg) and things were hotting up in Eritrea. The EPLF (a Christian guided and dominated force) had beaten the Derg with hands down. Separation was an accomplished fact; Meles and the EPRDF were in no position to prevent it or to grant it.

Had Meles and his party tried to oppose it they would have been smashed to pieces. I also know for fact EPLF had a plan to mess up the entire Ethiopia.

On the other hand, Meles calculation was smart and had a high degree of probability of success. He calculated that “a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush”. So, not only did Meles manage to save his group and also, I can boldly say, save Ethiopia. He was also hoping that the Christian dominated EPLF would eventually steer Eritrea towards some form of unification with Ethiopia (even Isaias was talking about this topic openly).

As usual, this was quick and smart thinking by Meles. But there were other factors that Meles did not take into account such as Isaias egoistic character and volatile nature.

Eritrea can be brought back to the brotherly Ethiopian fold, not by following the Emperor’s or Derg’s tried and failed method. But by understanding the dynamics of Eritrean society, and using a thinking and problem solving approach.

Girma Hadas finally said:

“… his (Meles’) ethno-centric political and federal system, his domination of the federal government by his own ethnic group”

Girma Hadas, fantasies disappear but facts remain. Whether you like it or not, Ethiopia is not a uniform Nation; it is composed of multiple nationalities and ethnic groups. By uttering the magic words such as “Unity” and “One Nation”, you will not be able to create a Nation that has a solid foundation and is based on voluntary association.

The problems of Ethiopian nationalities and ethnic groups have either been ignored or wrong solutions have been imposed for too long. Why not try some other solution that has not been tried before to see how works out?

The greatest Mathematical Physicist, Albert Einstein, defined insanity as follows:

Insanity- doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

For the various Ethiopian problems, insanity should not be an option.

Hey The Diplomat! when you mentioned you were a ‘’diplomat'’ I was expecting you gona come up something solid that u were experiencing when u were slave to them. I thought u gona expose vital secrets (backdoor activities). But u just ended speculating on the situation as anyone else does. U do not need to be a diplomat just to make such mere speculation. It just only needs to observe things critical and wisely. I appreciate ur insight on the issue though it does not require to be a ‘’diplomat'’ in order to point out these things.

Wow brilliant analysis. The TPLFites can’t challenge the writer based on context but based on character what a shame.

As someone above explained. The number one problem for Ethiopia is Egypt. As more Ethiopia is weakening, more those who beleived in the Ethiopai’s union will crumble thus throwing them in the hands of TPLF, Shaebia and Egypt. Once it is too late then nothing can be done. Even if West believes there is no turning back, it could negotiate for resources and will cease its support so that Egypt prevails. Thus we should work on Ethiopia’s allies by any means necessary before it’s too late

The death of Meles gives me a relief, and I hope that Ethiopia may finally become a Democratic Country, not unlike India; yes, I hope that Ethiopians would overcome their ugly history of being led by selfish and unreliable leaders, let alone a Western stooge like Meles who sold his country (remember the drone base without consulting the country’s parliament), not unlike Yohannes who led G. Britian soldeirs to the camp of Tewodros. Good riddance of Meles, but hopping still a better leader would come from somewhere, not necessarily from EPRDF, but from the youth of the country, from the honest disadvantaged citizen, say from the farmers, or teachers, or merchants, I am still hopping, a leader would come and Ethiopia would see the light of the day where citizens elect men and women of merit, where division based on language is obsolete, where people embrace any cultural, religious, color, sexual preference differences, and live in harmony together. I hope again the youth of Ethiopia would unit and see beyond the current ugly politician in the country (the ones in power and the opposition, this unification, I would say, would include Eritrean youth, Somalian youth, Djibouti-an youth, Horn of African youth, then peace, life of property, getting riddance of civil war, the goddamn bloodshed, getting riddance of famine, the humiliating famine, starvation, getting riddance of corruption, getting riddance of laziness, working harder and earning, again peace and living together, advance in technology and social development, free movement of the citizens, cosmopolitanizm, getting riddance of any kind and form of militancy, international responsibility, solidarity, … I hope Ethiopia would find a better leader soon.

The reality is that a new year and a new Era is coming to Ethiopia. An Era of peace and prosperity. An Era of good governance and neighborhood. An Era of dignity and equality. An Era of togetherness, happiness and complete harmony among the people of the Horn of Africa, where people move freely to Study, Trade, Tourism and jobb opportunity instead of asking refuge in neighboring country, instead of division and devastation. Our suffering has to endup with the old year.
My heartfelt Best wishes for the New Year. Let friendship reign and Horn of Africa bloomish like EnkuTaTash!!Amen.

Unlike some who try to vent their anger using the media that does not try to check facts, PM Meles has registered victories after victories on all economic, social and political fronts. It does not matter how he started it, nonetheless laid unshakable and strong foundation for others to build on. I think it is a wishful thinking the concern being expressed by the so-called opposition. In the first place outsiders should understand Meles was the product of the organization that still in control. Even if he played a significant role in the day to day activities of the party in his lifetime, he produced millions who will follow in his footsteps with less difficulties because he accomplished the hardest part. He will be remembered by policies he crafted as someone who pioneered the Ethiopian renaissance in the 21 Century. RIP Meles!
