Ethiopia: Washington Update

By Mesfin Mekonen

The passing of Meles Zenawi provides an opportunity for a transition in Ethiopia to democracy, respect for human rights, rule of law and all of the other attributes of a free society that most of the world takes for granted. But this transition is by no means inevitable. Now that they have finished praising Meles, the United States and the world community should take the steps that they failed to undertake when he was alive. This should start with a complete reevaluation of international relations with Ethiopia. The international community should not tolerate, and certainly should stop supporting, a regime that is built on political repression and that practices economic corruption. Those who say the international community must choose between stability and human rights, or between supporting dictatorship and acting against terrorism, are creating false choices. The only path to stability and prosperity in Ethiopia runs through democracy, and any democratically elected Ethiopian government would strenuously oppose terrorism.

Unfortunately, there is no sign that the U.S. or the rest of the world community is taking steps to press for change in Ethiopia. The Meles regime violently repressed all attempts to build civil society and democratic institutions. Without these institutions, Ethiopia will again fall into the hands of a dictatorship that is not accountable to its citizens.

The time to unify the country is now. It is especially important that we reject the ethnic division that has enabled the TPLF and its allies to control Ethiopia. The All Ethiopian Unity Party is discussing the call they made last week for an all party conference, including the current regime.

President Obama's official statement on the death of Meles ended with the sentence: "Going forward, we encourage the Government of Ethiopia to enhance its support for development, democracy, regional stability and security, human rights, and prosperity for its people." Rather than a softly spoken wish, this should be the basis for American policy.

The U.S. Congress, which allocates generous support for the Ethiopian military and for humanitarian assistance, should also make progress on democracy and human rights a top priority. The House Africa, Global Health and Human Rights subcommittee is likely to consider U.S. policy toward Ethiopia and other African countries in upcoming hearings. These hearings will be an opportunity to challenge the State Department, and to ask why American actions do not match American rhetoric about democracy and human rights.

This fellow always writes about this hearing and that Congress meeting etc. to solve Ethiopia’s problems. American Congress and American Senate is not responsible for Ethiopia but for America. Is that too dificult to understand? Whatever change in Ethiopia comes from Ethiopians not from XYZ congress man. As a door man and waiter of a hotel you better try to better yourself before you better other Ethiopians. Many of us are better in everything than you frustrated hotel waiter. Another werada diaspora politician.

My age group in Ethiopia, my friends are doing a whole lot better than I who lives in the West for many years. Lets us not pretend as if things are fine and dandy, “been then done that", nothing is new.

Hi poor Mesfin Mekonen let politics for politician you are categorized under the IDIOTS groups than with the wisdom of politics to lead the volatile country like Ethiopia. If you are an Ethiopian citizen or originally from Ethiopia I hope you know Ethiopia and Ethiopian. Ethiopian culture and value is they rely on the greatnesses of their nation, believe in God and accept foreign influence if that is rational to protect national interests. Listen Susan talk again and again, you learn how late Prime Minster has protected national interests by his skillful and rational reasoning from outsiders interference. You might believe Melese ideas disappeared with his burial. You might not accept his institution (party) standing alive. Stop claiming someone outsider to give you power by the expense the Ethiopian democratic rights to make choice who runs politics in their land.

This is to remind you all about the next Presidential election. We should all rally behind our dear Brother Obama and vote for him on the election day November 6, 2012. He has done more positively to Africa in general and our country in particular than all his predecessors combined. He deserves to be elected. That is even if you hate Tigrayans like me and it does not matter if you are a Shewan Amhara. He has been very good to you also.

I hope America and Europe will burry both Dictator Meles and their unconditional and so unfair support to Meles. Hopefully this will be un opportunity to show care and respect for humans, humans right and Ethiopians life as well. Ethiopians life is not a commodity but a human life.

There is nothing gone undiscovered by Ethiopians. Meles was wasting and gambling on humans life and dignity under the disguise of his fraudulent economic success. If you ask the Amaras, Gambellas, Ogadenians and Oromos you will get completely different and sad scenarios and sadly that is not new to everyone.

It is only his supporters, Tigres 5% of the population who coming out of Tigray to get rich and descended on Addis and other parts of Ethiopia. They have big mouths and trying to shut the 95% of the population voice because they are definitely and unfairly getting rich by stealing and suppressing the deserving 95% of the population.

It is a definite chance to come out of Tigray and get rich sooner where for other Ethiopians it is not and a definite disastrous situation to live or go anywhere.
