Ethiopia to elect a new president

Ethiopia will elect a new president to replace the retiring current president Girma Wolde-Giorgis, who is 82 years old. President Girma's term will end on Monday, October 8, 2007 during which the Parliament of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia will hold a joint assembly of both houses to elect a new President of the federal republic. Girma Wolde-Giorgis was elected on October 8 2001.

The presidency in Ethiopia is largely a symbolic office with little power. The power lies with the Prime Minister and TPLF. The parliament in Ethiopia is largely considered a rubber stamp for the ruling Tigray People's Liberation Front.

Hey Cowboy, how was your vacation as a president? I can’t believe this guy made headlines. Have you seen some of the his videos as a chairman of the pariament. In any case since you can be my father’s age I wish you farewell with a poor grade in your performance as the president of Ethiopia. I must say you look more impressive in photo than live tv so I have to say you did a good job in hiding or taking the back seat for the past 15 years in your role as the president.

Let’s farewell President Girma with respect and honor on his departure from the Presidency. He is an exceptional Ethiopian of high caliber who worked-hard all his life in many responsibility areas, and who has offered a lot to his country and people. The president has a rich biography, filled with a living monument of hard-work and sacrifice on areas that matter most to many Ethiopians. President Girma remains in history not only as the first elected Ethiopian president to finish his term, but also, as a roll model for those who value hard-work and achievement with Ethiopanness. We hope that the next President will follow on his foot-steps of fighting HIV, disease, alarming population growth, poverty, and his passionate wish in seeing a greener Ethiopia through aforestation and natural conservation. For those who are obsessed with politics, his deeds for the last six years are exemplary proofs to remind them that the nation has many other issues that needs tremendous attention of the higher office. Besides, Ethiopia has more than its share of politicians to worry with the doggy-dog world of Ethiopian politics.

Ethiopia needs a president with a clear mind and able to express his position on critical items of the country.
To my disappointment, nothing is heard of Mr. Girma. He never criticized or addressed basic issues of the country at critical times.
Though the president has more of a representative function, he should be a personality able to examine critical situations and give even an arbitrary statement. In other countries (for e.g. Germany) the president (called Bundespresident) is not a puppet of the ruling party. The Bundespresident is a personality highly repected by all parties.

Let us hope that our country will get a president, whom we all can be proud of, who can analyze and address the nation and most of all who can advise in critical situations.

I call on Meles to do his old buddy one of the biggest favor by letting him stay at Eyobeliyu until his carcass is pulled out. That is his ultimate dream -to die on the the Emperor\’s Chair. After all, this is not a big demand; what would an Ethiopian president do do other than go out once a while to cut a ribbon? He has been doing this job very well while sitting on his wheelchair.

Why is CUD made up little chickens who are both vegetarian and scavengers at the same time. No there is one big roaster in heaven when he crows all those on earth follow his lead because they don’t know better. Kid, “Does not the waste of the crow defile heaven with his Kuss/” No when he does that he turns his hole towards hell where enemies of Ethiopia, CUD, OLF, Shabiea and OPLF goes to get their reward of 12 prostitutes. Kid, did not I hear these people are castrated by EPRDF. Lekalekawent, they have no time for entertain they just hear when the prostitutes scream burning in hell as they themselves come out for a cigarette break. kid, come to think of it, when the big roaster in heaven turns his back towards hell does not the fire of hell touches his back feather and get him down to roast. The Lika lekaunt gets angry with the witty questions of the kid and shouts at him why should I care if he roasts on earth or in hell, it is a God forsaken CUD, Shabia, OLF, OPLF born to be roasted any way; don’t ever come near me you silly devil. Eshetu Daba:
I can understand your fear about CUD, OLF, & ONLF. Like a Beaver or Squirrel, Tigreans are stealing and piling up resources from other Ethiopian regions. The reality is whatever they steal would not last forever. Only God knows how you guys finance and maintain the universities and industries constructed all over Tigray. The resources you stole and accumulated last probabily for the next 5 to 10 years. What’s gonna happen after 10 years? I also udertand your other fears. Once the TPLF regime is removed by the united forces of OLF, ONLF, CUD, and other oppressed people of Ethiopia, the time for the “Twisted” Eshetu on Computer Monitor will also come to an end. Do you know why I said “Twisted"? Daba in Afaan Oromo means twist. A true Oromo never take Daba as a human name. Let me give you this homework: Find the differences among the following Oromo vocabularies:

Daba,
Dhaaba,
Dhaabaa, &
Dhabaa.

You may ask an OPDO, if he/she knows the differences. Hopefully, I will see you online soon with your your twisted responses.

Can you make things simpler. Diaspora would have difficulty understanding such complex narrative. Bottom line is
it would be better to appoint one from
the opposition in a true spirit of
reconciliation. I mean the opposition in Ethiopia. Meles is capable of doing that. The opposition in diaspora
is running for EU parliament and US congress?! The enemies of Ethiopia ( Diaspora CUD, Eritrea, OLF, OPLF) will be disappointed if the opposition were to be appointed to the presidency. I know Berhanu Nega would like to be president, but he is sleeping with sworn enemies of Ethiopia. Hailu Shawl may have a chance. Is he not the same age as Girma?

TPLF is committed for the liberation of donkeys and why does not they elect a donkey as a president to show their devotion.

Eshetu Daba,

So much for your wisdom and now you have lowered yourself with this rant and lost all respect with me dear sir. I have always taken time to read what you have to say but now you are in the same league with rest on the hot heads on this site. Ethiopia is doomed when political discourse is expressed in this manner. If this is free speech, I will have none of it.

This time, the chair should go to pastoralists, not highland. This means, the next nominee will be Hassan Abdalla, or Mohamud Diri. But, I hope they will not accept.

Would n’t it be better to rent the palace and make some money than electing another president only to occupying it for no use?

I can not believe that we Ethiopians insult an elderly person like the president of Ethiopia. This man achieve a lot in life starting from the least job to being the leader of this country.so atleast we should respect him for his age than not for what he has done for the country.Because most of us are not doing anything for our country as we supposed to but only talk.

bruck,

I think the author should change the title of his article. Ethiopia has never chosen its president. Meles is the one who chooses them. Negaso and Girma were hand picked by Meles. Hand picked or not they were good for nothing. Tomorrow the rubber stamp parliament (itself not freely elected) will endorse the third hand picked president. But who cares for joke presidents and totalitarian governments? I think Meles is a psychopath who needs political theatre to keep himself high. I thought the millennium celebration was good enough for him for six months. But he needed one of those farce elections now. He will get it from the kangaroo parliament tomorrow. And then what is next? May be he needs another war with Eritrea. Of all things that is what he told Girma to speak today before leaving his palace for good and join his “areke bet” as usual. Can’t this people learn how to talk peace even when they are leaving office?

“Parliament plans to elect a new president — or perhaps to re-elect Girma — on Tuesday.” (International Herald Tribune, October 8, 2007).

Is it possible to re-elect him?

Yager Lij

Yeah I saw the Video…..then again he acted as the Woyane Teddy Bear. At times he needed Baby Sitter. Obviously, though it is a tribe related appointment, Woyane likes joke in its political show of the Tele Tubbies.

O’Yeah. Meles needs someone to turn to in times of work load - someone who can entertain those foreigners who are less important in the political area. Surely, the Bear was just more an entertainment figure than a statesman. Every parliamentary enjoyed his comic leadership or handling of agendas which often he confused the Eritrean issue with the flood in Harar. The cow boy figure was probably the happiest president in the world who was just pushed up the ladder of presidency to serve as a toy. He was clothed in luck and no one detected his Alzheimer’s issue. For every word he spoke there he had someone wisphered to him before he opened his mouth. Reminds me of my “Kies Timihirt Bet” where we picked from the mouth of “Yeneta” and repeated every single
word after him.
He was more of Resident of the Palace than President of the nation.
He will definately be missed by MPs. So will he miss the Palace where he enjoyed life both as a President and an entertaining toy.
He will be remembered in history as Ethiopia’s funniest President with less or no presidential stress.
We wish him all the best.

So far I didn’t see any one who make sense!! I beleive there are so many Ethiopians out there who can nominate very good candidate for president or present them self to the candidacy. Why can’t you be serious and participate in a good manner. This is for the good of your own country. God bless Ethiopia!!! From the prime minister’s office.

My friend Shewayelem Zenawi,

Don’t you get it? You keep on talking to yourself. They are all ignoring you.

Their main concern is not what “ashangulit” to nominate for you, rather how soon you can be expelled to your country Eritrea.

Remember you hold the record, actually the only record, of a leader of a nation who celebrated the seceesion of part of the country he adminsters. “be enante gerba yalew tebasa, be enaem gerba ale,” we never did, and we will never forget that.

The next president should be mixed with Oromo, Tigray, and Amhara & Ogaden at least. His language should be Latin to keep the majority happy! He should also need to speak Swahili, French & Arabic to keep our French & Arab friends happy! English is not that important b/c these days too many Ethiopians speak English

Ethiopians are sick and tired of PARASITES. Whom are you cheating, it is all clear Ethiopia is ruled by one man called MELES ZENAWI - He is the PM, President, responsible for the Armed Forces and Foreign Affairs. I hope Ethiopia will be free from a one man rule like what happened in 1989 in the Socialist Countries.
