Growing Muslim Activism and the Ethiopian State: Accommodation or Repression?

Growing Muslim Activism and the Ethiopian State: Accommodation or Repression?

By Jawar Mohammed*

Various narratives are being presented to explain the growing standoff between Muslim activists and the current Ethiopian regime. The activists accuse the state of discrimination and meddling in the internal activities of their faith by imposing an imported religious doctrine. The state blames the conflicts on 'radicalization' and a covert agitation by foreign-based elements. The regime is also accusing the opposition parties of exploiting religion for their political gains. The opposition attributes the rising tension to the regime’s use of religion as part of its divide and rule tactics.

Setting aside the question of which narrative is more plausible, I think there is an even more important question; what explains the growing political consciousness and activism of Muslim society today—a development that internal and external political entrepreneurs are competing to frame for its use within their own strategic objectives.

There are four possible factors that can help us understand this phenomenon. First, the Ethiopian Muslims have been experiencing socioeconomic changes that necessitated increased participation and greater political representation. Second, Islamic revivalism has been intensified in the last two decades. Third, the state has made little or no adjustment to its institutional composition and modus operandi to accommodate these changes. Fourth, the policies and tactics of the current regime have resulted in the weakening of the autonomy of Islamic institutions, and consequently generating negative reactions from Muslim society towards the state.

The consequence of the interaction between these factors is a widespread religious awakening and heightening of political consciousness. I will briefly discuss each of these four factors.

I. Low participation and under-representation of Muslims in Ethiopian politics

Historically, despite religious persecution and state-sanctioned discrimination Islam was rarely used as an ideology or identity for political mobilization. In other words, Muslims had minimal participation in the politics of the Ethiopian state. Today despite making up half of the country’s population, Muslims are acutely underrepresented within the Ethiopian political elite. There are three possible explanations for this:

a) Starting in the 16th century, ethnicity replaced religious identity as a center of mobilization and confrontation. First, after the rise of the Oromo as one of the three major players at the center of the Christian Kingdom— at the end of the epic wars between the Christian Kingdom and the Muslim Sultanates—conflicts were waged mostly across ethnic lines. Second, having peacefully and slowly expanded into most areas of the country, Islam was incorporated into the existing norms and institutions in the process becoming a subset of the preexisting culture rather than displacing it as a dominant identity. Third, the abandonment of forced conversion during the later stages of the Southern conquest also meant that ethnic culture rather than religious identity was a target of assimilation during Imperial consolidation. In response, resistance against the state and the dominant society was conducted through ethnic rather than religious mobilization. While the emperors utilized the church to unify their forces and legitimize their objectives, the fact that Islam cuts across the conquered ethnic and/or regional groups meant that they had to de-emphasize religious differences in order to keep intra-ethnic solidarity and cohesion. Therefore, even grievances born out of religion-specific discrimination were channeled through ethnic mobilization reducing the possibility of faith-based activism.

b) The types of economic activities, particularly trade and pastoralism that the majority of Muslims were engaged in did not cause them to be in conflict with the state. In urban areas and in the North, Muslims were generally engaged in trade. As trade was not a preferred occupation for the politically privileged groups, Muslims did fairly well with less competition. In other words, for Muslims, trade served as a less costly alternative for upward mobility and removed the need to seek political affiliation from a state traditionally identified with another religion.

Similarly, pastoralists led a mobile life far away from the center of political power the emerging state lacked the ability to directly control and extract their resources, and thus chose to rely on ‘voluntary’ tribute by local leaders in exchange for maintaining the leaders’ autonomy. This arrangement reduced the possibility of friction and conflict with the dominant society that normally extracted the resources directly for the state by settling among the conquered people. Generally, in imperial Ethiopia, Muslim elites neither demanded nor were they welcomed for participation in the political class. A lasting consequence of this predicament for the Muslim societies is that the traders did not see the importance of education while pastoralists lacked the opportunity for it.

c) In the second half of the 20th century, despite rising grievances and potentially favorable external conditions, religious-based mobilization did not take hold due to the progressive and nationalist politics that engulfed the country. The Leftist’s endorsement of the demand and eventual success of separating religion and the state removed what at the time was the main source of grievance for Muslims. That is, by legitimizing their demand and standing with them in solidarity, progressives minimized the need for a totally separate Muslim resistance. In a similar fashion, nationalist movements (Oromo, Eritrea, Tigray) fighting on behalf of constituencies, all of which contained adherents of multiple faiths, actively worked to prevent the politicization of religion by promoting interfaith tolerance and emphasizing ethnocultural similarities. In other words, by choosing to accommodate rather than suppress religious identities, grievances and sentiments, the leftist and nationalist movements allowed Muslims to frame their objectives within secular political movements.

Generally, the displacement of Islam by ethnicity and the containment of Muslim grievances by progressivism and nationalism resulted in less mobilization of the Muslim society in terms of religious identity. However, while ‘containment’ allowed for their grievances to be incrementally, indirectly and less contentiously addressed, it also resulted in lower participation and exclusion from political life.

II. Transformation of the Muslim society

The social, political, and economic changes that have taken place in the last few decades have been gradually transforming the Muslim society. Some of these changes include:

a) Today, trade is no longer a Muslim domain. Following land redistribution in 1975, previous landlords and aristocrats moved to trade increasing competition. After the downfall of the military junta, tens of thousands of Tigrean soldiers were demobilized, given start-up funding and sent to do business, further crowding the market. With the establishment of party-owned oligarchies that have monopolized the most lucrative sectors, small and mid-level businessmen, particularly in traditionally Muslim controlled commodities such as coffee, are being squeezed out. Thus, trade is no longer a promising career path for the new generation of Muslims.

Furthermore, climate change is making pastoralism an increasingly difficult lifestyle. As chronic drought continues to wipe out their cattle, pastoralists are forced to abandon their old occupation. Therefore, as the economic activities that sustained their parents are fast depleting, the emerging Muslim generation has been forced to look for alternative career paths towards upward mobility. In a country where some 80% of the wage-earning jobs are provided by the state, the best available option is to seek government employment. Since modernization has made education a requirement for such jobs, Muslim parents are sending their children to school as never before. As thousands of these youth graduate from training programs and higher academic institutions, they expect and demand the government to provide them with employment opportunities. The inability and/or unwillingness of the government to fulfill these expectations and address the demands are one of the key factors behind the increased Muslim activism we are observing.

b) In the last few decades Islam in Ethiopia, like elsewhere, has been undergoing revivalism—growth of spiritual interest and renewal of religious teachings. This revivalism has been intensified particularly in the last two decades. After 17 years of anti-religious propaganda and centralized control of society by the military junta, the partial democratization and decentralization that took place since 1991 has increased both the demand for and supply of religion. The relative relaxation of press freedom allowed for the translation, publication and distribution of religious texts in various vernaculars. The rapid improvement in literacy rate has catalyzed people to look for and absorb these literatures. Development of transportation infrastructure, improvement in telecommunications, the ever-growing rural-urban migration, availability of cheaper and compact stereos, and most recently, social media, have all allowed for greater availability and dissemination of information. The result has been a widespread religious awakening.

As religious revivalism often involves struggle between traditionalists and modernists, there has been extensive debate among Muslim religious leaders that at times split the faithful into competing groups. It is quite impressive that, while incidents of isolated confrontations were observed during earlier stages, with time, both sides have matured and developed a more sophisticated campaign strategy and ensured the peaceful progress of this revivalism.

This simultaneous evolution of the socioeconomic transformation of the Muslim society and revivalism of their religion has increased their social dynamism, leading some to misconceive or misrepresent the two parallel evolutions as a single phenomenon and call it ‘radicalization’.

III. The Stagnant State

While the Muslim society has undergone these transformational changes, the state has made little institutional adjustment to accommodate them:

a) Decentralization and federalism have enabled the emerging ruling party affiliated elites of the previously marginalized groups to benefit from state resources while administering to their population. However, the absence of real power sharing at the center has restricted their upward mobility and has ‘frozen’ them to their regional, zonal and district positions. Beyond a few individuals holding a symbolic ministerial portfolio, there is insignificant Muslim presence in the central administrative apparatus and political structure. Thus, while the lower level state structure has been directly affected and relatively responsive to the ongoing changes of the Muslim society, the central government has been largely insulated and made little adjustment to accommodate it.

b) Furthermore, the unchanging state identity is one of the remaining obstacles that keeps Muslims feeling as if they are strangers in their own home. Despite symbolic equality and greater government tolerance towards religious communities, the identity of the Ethiopian state, both its symbols and composition, remains closely attached to Christianity. To see this one only needs to visit the embassies and ministries. Such ‘exclusive’ state identity hinders the incorporation of the emerging Muslim youth. These fruits of an educated, ambitious and identity-conscious generation perceive such conditions uninviting and unwelcoming; consequently, they often turn away. Having no alternative means of survival like their parents, they are forced to come back and are knocking on the door in order to change the circumstances.

IV Aggravating State Policies

a) When the current regime took over the state, the most serious threat to its power was from Oromo nationalism. From its inception the Oromo movement has accommodated, courted and secured support from religious leaders, particularly Muslims and Evangelical Christians. Therefore in order to weaken this grassroot support among Muslims, the regime exploited the preexisting but salient difference between traditionalist and revivalist religious leaders. The rivalry that was exacerbated by the state’s intervention is one of the causes for the alleged ‘tension’, which it is supposedly now trying to contain.

b) Just like it did with the Orthodox Church, the Ethiopian regime took control of and used the Islamic institutions for its own political purposes. The consequence is that some religious leaders came to act as state agents and institutions began working as if they were extensions of the state. By so doing, they lost legitimacy and credibility in the eyes of the faithful, allowing for alternative leadership and informal institutions to emerge.

c) In the last decade the discourse of the Ethiopian state has swung to the right. In response to international changes that brought potential strategic gains and domestic developments that posed threats to its power, the originally Marxist regime adopted a right wing narrative. Always quick to make short-term political gain regardless of its long-term consequences, Meles jumped on the band wagon of the “Global War on Terror”. To achieve this objective the regime resuscitated the strategic narrative of its predecessors that presented Ethiopia as a country surrounded by Islamic threat—a therefore easily recognizable to and a naturally ally of the West. This was followed by attempts to impose some unnecessary restrictions (such as banning of hijab and prayer in schools), harassment of men with long beards, and utterance of offensive terms by senior government officials. These actions and narratives that targeted Muslims revived the suppressed painful memories of religious persecution, creating greater consciousness among Muslims. The invasion of Somalia under the false pretext of ‘neutralizing the Islamic threat’, and the accompanying rhetoric was deeply offensive to many. The regime’s harassment of Muslim activists, based on unfounded allegations of being part of some faceless militant group, and also attributing the widespread resistance against the imported sect to manipulation by “international terrorists and foreign money”, stand to empower hardliners while weakening moderates.

Similarly, following the resurrection of the Ethiopian right during the 2005 election, the regime has been shifting further in an attempt to be the loudest to proclaim the mantra of Ethiopian nationalism. The propaganda of ‘renaissance’ that was launched during the ‘millennium’ extravaganza has been stepped up with recent hysteria over Abbay Dam. Therefore, the old slogan of transforming and building a new Ethiopia is replaced with reviving and reclaiming the glorious past. Since the historically marginalized segments of the population, including Muslims, have a less rosy interpretation of that past, the narratives being pushed by the state are hopelessly familiar in their message to them. At a time when recognition of past injustice is needed, this reactionary move of ‘othering’ Muslims and securitizing their demands has exacerbated the sense of exclusion felt by Muslims, and consequently catalyzed Muslim activism.

Void in political leadership and intellectual guidance

The increased activism of religious communities—both Islamic and Christian—is taking place while there is complete a lack of serious discourse among political leaders and academics. As part of their strategy of containing religious politicization, political leaders developed an attitude of negligence or excessive sensitivity towards religious discourse. The consequence is that politicians and scholars consider commentary and research on religion, and particularly Islam, to be a politically risky business. The global events that followed 9/11 have exacerbated this fear. As a result, we have Muslim political elites with little connection with their community and few Muslim scholars who follow up, research and write on the socioeconomic and political developments of their community. Today, some people point to certain high ranking government officials and ruling party leaders who are Muslims. But few Muslim youth recognize them as Muslim leaders because, having little connection with the community, they neither understand nor show visible concern for the aspirations and views of their community. This is not to suggest that these national leaders should advocate sectarian interest. The point is that had they been rooted in their community, they would be able to provide more accurate feedback to the state and also have the legitimacy needed to more efficiently communicate government policies to the public.

The situation is no better in the opposition camp. Perhaps with the exception of the nationalist movements spearheading a multi-religious constituency, Muslim participation and representation in opposition politics is almost nonexistent. In the past to keep internal cohesion, and in the post 9/11 world to avoid their organizations being labeled ‘terrorist’, nationalists desperately try to avoid any mention of Islam. The almost complete absence of Muslims within the leadership and opinion makers of the ‘centrist’ forces have made these political parties vulnerable to ignorance and negligence of the grievances, interest, perspectives and feelings of the Muslim community. Consequently they are prone to using narratives that alienate and push away, rather than attract, Muslim support and participation.

When political elites and organizations neglect to follow and fail to understand the concerns, aspirations and grievances of a particular religious communities, the political class would not able to develop proper policy responses to crisis. Then the leadership void will inevitably be filled by religious activists who would double both as spiritual and political leaders—that is a serious threat to secular politic, situation that a multi-faith society cannot afford.

The same applies to the intellectual class. In Ethiopian studies, Islam and Muslim society has been so poorly studied. It is astonishing that in the 20th century only two books were published. After J.S Trimingham’s “Islam in Ethiopia”, it took another half-a-century for another major work to be produced. This second book was Hussein Ahmed’s “ Islam in Nineteenth-century Wello” . Apart from these, there are only few other books, plus some articles and chapters that directly deal with the subject. This is in part due to historical factors mentioned above, the country produced very few Muslim scholars. Even among those small numbers, with the exception of Hussein Ahmed (who sadly passed away in 2009), few Muslim scholars have produced thorough, academic literature on the affairs of Muslim society. Despite expanding educational opportunities, the trend seems to be similar among the emerging academics that continue either the path of avoidance or the focus only on theological aspects. In the absence of serious scholarship, knowledge is being produced and disseminated by highly passionate activists who publish uncritical and reactionary pamphlets that agitate rather than educate the society. There is an urgent need for Muslim and non-Muslim intellectuals to undertake rigorous research and engage the public. Continued negligence could have grave consequences.

Misguided interference

Having failed to introduce structural changes to accommodate the changing Muslim society, having used shortsighted tactics that weakened the age-old Islamic institutions that facilitated coexistence, having attempted to impose unnecessary restrictions that offended the Muslim community, the regime is now trying to use another dangerous strategy that is supposed to ‘moderate’ Islam. Granted religious moderation is a vital state interest, such moderation ought to be engineered from within rather than being imposed externally. The regime, however, has apparently imported a foreign religious sect to provide ‘training’ for Ethiopian imams on “moderation”.

There are several fundamental problems with this. First, the state has no business choosing and imposing a particular doctrine onto a given religious community. It is the most flagrant form of violating the principle of separation of state and religion. Second, such attempt at a top-down re-indoctrination of a religious community is a poorly conceived strategic blunder. Any society by nature is suspicious of external interference, and even more so are religious communities that viciously guard themselves against influence by outside doctrines. Thus, it should not be a surprise that the Muslim community perceived state sponsorship of an alien sect to undertake such coercive and blunt re-indoctrination, as an attempt at forced conversion. Third, the government also relied on a wrong assumption that led it to adopt this misguided strategy. Having successfully taken control of the Orthodox Church by replacing or coopting the top leadership, the regime seems to think it could do the same through Islamic Affairs Supreme Council.

Unlike Christianity, particularly Orthodox and Catholicism, which have centralized institutions and hierarchical leadership that exercises strong control over followers, Islam is a decentralized religion in which every mosque and religious leader functions as an autonomous entity and agency. Mosques are usually constructed by each community; imams are members of the local population who volunteer their service and rarely draw salary. Muslim clerics are rarely centrally ordained or appointed. The religious teachers (who might not necessarily be the same person as the imams) attract students based on their intellectual fame, and their centers are sustained through local support. Therefore, there is minimal networking among mosques, little outside and top-down control over the content of what a religious scholar teaches, what an imam preaches or how a specific mosque functions. There has not been much change to this nature of Ethiopian Islam even after the institutionalization of the Supreme Council with the aim of providing centralized representation and service. While the revivalist movement has introduced some formalized training institutions that have allowed improved standardization of teaching content and methodology, it has not been able to bring about centralized and coordinated structure because localities vehemently defend their autonomy.

Therefore Ethiopian Muslims are organized through highly decentralized and autonomous structures that prevent changes to be effectively introduced from the top. That is why the struggle between traditionalists and revivalists has been fought over control of mosques rather than the central institutions. The government seems to have missed this important fact in devising its strategy; consequently the ploy has blown up in its face.

Conclusion: From Mispresentation to Accommodation

Islam and Muslim society in Ethiopia are experiencing critical socioeconomic and spiritual transformations. Such transformation would undoubtedly cause societal stress. Given the global climate today, such stress would obviously cause nervousness and concern among internal and external stakeholders –and rightly so. However, instead of nervously rushing towards finding a short-term fix, long-range , constructive and accommodative response is needed. The starting point in such an approach is to produce more accurate, detailed and deeper knowledge about the socioeconomic and spiritual nature of the Ethiopian Muslim society.

One thing that the Ethiopian state and political elites must stop is deliberate mispresentation of this Muslim activism. As I have attempted to show in this article, while the ongoing Islamic revivalism is part of and affected by global events, the actors, motives and causes are domestic. As a recent, in depth research on “Religious Change among Oromo Muslims in Bale” by Terje Østebø has demonstrated, an unbiased and careful observer can easily understand that the nature, content and direction of this decades- old revivalism has been largely caused, shaped and constrained by existing domestic conditions. Similarly, while Ethiopian Muslims do show solidarity with their global fellows on spiritual matters, their socioeconomic grievances and political demands are directed towards the Ethiopian state. Therefore, mispresenting these facts, for short term tactical gains, will not only hinder the search for accommodative mechanisms, but also exacerbate existing tension.

In the past, Muslim aspirations were for religious equality and freedom. The present generation demands inclusion, representation and full participation, and the ongoing nationwide resistance is against state interference. In general Ethiopian Muslims want to see and struggle to achieve incorporation of their interest, perspectives and aspiration in the policy formulations, narratives and symbols of the state. And these are hardly typical demands of a religious movement; but rather that of a secular and democratic social movement that exclusively relies on nonviolent resistance. This Muslims activism is conducted within the country’s boarders, directed at and expects response from the existing state.

Hysterical cries of alarm by acolytes of the regime and high-pitched rhetoric by fringe elements in the Muslim community notwithstanding, neither in the past nor now has there been a demand for the establishment of an exclusive Islamic political entity, nor has there been advocacy for the imposition of Islam on the rest. Previously, political organizations that attempted such approach faced outright rejection by the Muslims community, some forced to change their ideology while others disappeared. Despite repeated calls by regional and national militant organizations and provocative state actions, the present Muslim activism has shown no temptation for militancy.

This leads me to conclude that what we are witnessing is demand for a more genuinely democratic order where freedom, the rule of law, and equality are not just declared ideals but a reality for all Ethiopians regardless of their religious affiliation. As such the growing Muslim activism is a resistance against discriminatory, unresponsive and intrusive political system. Therefore, it is an integral part of the ongoing, albeit fragmented, struggle for democratization. Contrary to the alarms raised by some, a move towards addressing these demands will be tantamount to moving Ethiopia towards greater stability and more equitable development.

Jawar Mohammed is a smart guy and has a potential. I was, however, very disappointed at his article after the OLF truce. He showed his immaturity. Plus, we Oromos need to get off this so called “abbysina colonizers” BS that has nothing to do with today’s reality. The world is in FaceBook age and the Oromo militants and so called intellectuals are still talking about separation. Sadly, a writer is only as good as his last worst piece.

Jawar,
This is just another tool for Meles’ divide and conquer strategy. Stupidly enough, we will fall for it and start bickering amongst ourselves along religious lines all the while the regime is looting our resources. Those of us in academia need to understand the combustibility of these situation and refrain from looking at this as another opportunity to make a name for ourselves.

Don’t forget that:

1. Christian Ethiopia opened its door to a persecuted Islam; therefore, Islam forever remains “guest” of Ethiopia.

2. The TPLF goverment in lieu with Al Amoudin is by far the best friend of Islam. 11,000 maids flown each day to Arabia? Buying the entire land at will; arresting peaceful residents for mere
praying… What else can be asked for?

3. Burning churches and clearing Christians from thier own lands is either the works of TPLF or Akrari Islam.

1. When it comes to religion Melles the current Ethiopian regim, as its predecessors, give more freedom and prevelage to Orthodox christians than muslims and other christian denominations. An evidence for this is the fact that it denied to return back buildings owned by Adventist christians in Adama town and Mekane yesus in 5 Kilo.

2. As Jewar said since the time of Yohannes IV Ethiopian muslims are under continuous harrasment by Abysinian leaders. Yohannes IV killed many muslims (from Tigray, Wollo, Afar,…) for religious reasons. Melles also inherited this act of his grand pappa. In summary successive Abysinian leaders are antimuslim and anti cushitic. This makes the oppression on ormo muslims, Afars, Somalis and others double oppression: as a people they are oppressed; as a muslim they are oppressed.

This text is a propaganda garbage seems are financed by oil money to spread their barbaric cult in Ethiopia.

1. The war between Islam and Christian in Ethiopia was started when the Ottoman that was colonizing the entire Arab invaded Ethiopia with the Arabs participation. It happened in 1529-1543. The Muslim slaughters against the Christians took 14 years. The barbaric Muslims destroyed everything had to do with Christians. They massacred millions of Christians. They forced millions to leave the area. And the survivors were forced to accept the barbaric Islam religion. This is the way how Islam took root in southern Ethiopia.

The centre of the war between Islam and Christian was south from Nazret the place called Shimbra Bora. Muslims had 12.500 Turks and Arab terrorists that were in a mission to spread their barbaric cult in Ethiopia. The Ethiopian side had 250.000 solders. Yet, because of they had better weapons and most importantly they were transformed to savage monsters, the barbaric Muslims able to defeat the Christian army that was from all Ethnic groups.

Therefore, Islam took root in Ethiopia through massacre happened in 1529-1543. It is not a religion of choice but imposed with gun and fear.

This text is intended to mislead with lies about the barbaric Islam ideology. What Islam did and does is known internationally. This not only the problem of Ethiopia anymore, but the world. We see every day in pictures and we hear stories about Islam being savage and the most dangerous ideology the world is ever facing even worse than Communism, Nazism and anything combined.

How do you deal with anyone who believes after he dies while killing many none Muslims, he would be in paradise waiting him 72 virgins to serve his needs as a wife the rest of his existence.? How do you deal when you see the life and condition of women in Islamic nation because of that ideology has no respect what so ever to women to see them as competent and equal but less than grown human? Look the why how they dress, behave and they marry them not one by one but together. This is like in the Animal world. A strong animal can have more female at one time. This is the way how this ideology works and the world know that everything about this religion is lies and barbaric.

As far as the Ethiopian Muslim concern, there was no problem until recently. But since the Arabs are brainwashing them pouring oil money in the name of Charity, that barbaric cult is poisoning them. No one is causing the problem against the Muslims in Ethiopia but the Arabs that are using oil money to radicalize and spread the wahabis and salafis ideology which is affecting the whole world.

What Ethiopia has to do is that she need to work with the International community concerning the Arabs interfering using money and radical Muslims. I’m sure 100% there will be no Muslim unities in Ethiopia for the sake of the barbaric Islam ideology came from the Arab desert.

-Amhara and Tigre=95% Christians.
-Oromo=45% Christians and is growing.
-Sidama= 95% Christian.
-Hadya, Kembata, wolayta and the likes 95% Christians. And the rest are the same situation.

So, as it came through war and imposed on the people using massacre and destruction happened 1529-1543, Islam has no place in Ethiopia. What Ethiopians has and must to do is that they must not tolerate any Muslim that has a barbaric Islamic ideology. If they are using force, the Christian people also have to use force to eliminate this barbaric. Don’t give them another cheek as we know they no human consious but Satan.

If any Muslim attack any church, Christians also has to destroy all mosques financed by oil money from the desert. If they kill any one, they must be killed 10 times. Don’t give them any space. They are evil. if you are God’s person don’t tolerate evil.

We also know, most of so called Muslim activists are from the Guragee families mainly Silte.

This article looks from anyone that is an Arab radical Muslim or a son to an Arab Muslim man and Ethiopian woman (Christian) as we know they are raping our women. Is the Arab oil money and secret ideology behind it?

Ethiopians must reject any radical Muslim ideology that is financed by the Arabs. They are poisoning the whole world as they are polluting the environment with oil while selling it with money to finance radicals.

Is this man in Ethiopia or where is he? With whom is he associating and what is he doing?

The Muslims who sought asylum were back to Saudi within 10 years. Even if they did not, they were only in Tigray. Where do you think all Ethiopian Muslims came from ?
The Oromo Muslims, the Hararis, Somali, Afar, Silte….
Do you think all these were immigrants from Saudi ? Indeed, you are ignorant. Some of them are not even related to Arabs.

However, I will tell you this. Muslims are native to most parts of Ethiopia, Especially in the south and East. In fact, Christians are the gussets in these parts of the country. They came following the invasions.

As it is happening against the whole world, Islam is and especially will be the only biggest problem ahead Ethiopia has to face for long time to come. No poverty, no secular based political ideology, no Ethnic differences, No race differences and no any differences/problems other than the middle East/Arab type of Islam is the biggest fret to Ethiopia and the rest of the world mainly Europe and Africa.

Because we know in North, middle and South America this barbaric cult will never get root. It will not get root also in China, Japan, and other east and south East Asia nations. But it will be the biggest fret to India.

Europe which is stupid and weak when it comes to Muslims is just waiting its worst time while making the Muslims feel at home to do their secret agenda that when the time comes will be imposed on Europeans.

So, Ethiopians especially the good/healthy Muslims meaning those not infected by the Arabs type of barbaric doctrine of Islam must fight those evil Muslims with in. I’m sure, if the situation goes on the way how the Guragee/Silte Muslims are behaving, those associating with them will be the worst victims, too.

No any wise and healthy mind Ethiopian will tolerate anymore the new satanic behavior some Ethiopian Muslims have. If they want to cause problem, they must get back with Interest. If they want killing, they will be killed. If they want to destroy churches as they did till now, their mosque must be destroyed.

We are human like them. If they get nasty, we have to get nastier than they are. We must not give them any space to spread their dirty and criminal activities in the name of Religion that using killing and destruction its way of life and living.

To see them wearing that dress especially the women, makes the city/country being dirty and backward.

What the Ethiopian people must understand is that most radical Muslims are from Guragee and silte. This stupid need to be stopped.

Muhammad has always been standing higher than the Christianity. He does not consider god as a human being and never makes himself equal to God. Muslims worship nothing except God and Muhammad is his Messenger. There is no any mystery and secret in it Every time a crime was committed by a Muslim, that person’s faith was mentioned, regardless of its relevance. When a crime is committed by a Christian, do they mention his religion? … When a crime is committed by a black man, it’s mentioned in the first breath: ‘An African American man was arrested today…’ But what about German Americans? Anglo Americans? A white man robs a convenience store and do we hear he’s of Scottish descent? In no other instance is the ancestry mentioned. The world today is fast becoming one.Humanity is one, God is one and mankind are all part of one human family.
all Religions are connected, and they all lead to faith in the one God, no matter what name we give him he is but one God.

I see radical muslim as a treat to ethiopia. what ever cover is given it boils dawn to fundamentalism, because if issues are raised in the name of Islam, the assumption is solution rests on the government providing merits based on his religion, in this case muslim and it opens the door for muslim religion to be tied with government formation, a key demand of fundamentalism! For the sake of peace and united country we should be able to understand that muslim fundamentalism has no place in ethiopia.

As t7 wrote muslims remain guests of Christians in Ethiopia. Why is it muslims always complain and wants to play victim’s role all over the world. This the best time ever for muslims in Ethiopia, muslims are building mosques everywhere even in places where there are no muslims. This government is the best pal of muslims who has given them permission to do anything they want. Look at Bahirdar a Christian city and what do you see when you are in the center of the town: a Mega mosque. The same with Gonder, Debrebirhan, Nazret, Addis Abeba and many cities in the south. Any international tourist who come to Addis would mistake it to a muslim city by the grandiousness of the mosques built there. I wonder who is financing these misbehaviours? All muslims know a decade ago there was no mosque in the center of Bahirdar, Gonder nor Addis. There are millions of Christians in Saudi Arabia and aren’t allowed to build one Church, they even arrest those Ethiopians for praying to the Lord. At the same time these savages are allowed to build thousends of mosques in Christian Ethiopia. As if this is not enough muslims are busy burning Churches built in their hoods. The mistreatment of Christians will be the downfall of Meles and his aithiest groups. This is the worst thing they did to Ethiopians, especially to the Amharas and the Tigrians who have fought for Christianity in Ethiopia for centuries.

Jesus is the answer

I have asked myself many times the same question for long time. During so called desert spring in North Africa and Middle East, I have heard and hear also how the Muslims are laying. They have no boarder to lie.

I asked someone about it, saying why Muslims are laying always and about everything?

He told me “what do you expect from them"?

-In the name of religion, they are committing terrorist acts including suicide in order to kill others. They are doing this because they have been told after death with this way, they would get many virgins in paradise.
- He also told me, when they shoot gun, burn houses, destroy bridges and kill people, they are shouting with happiness “Allah akbour". what kind God is permitting it from its followers.
- The crimes they are committing against innocent people are much worse than they being layers. So, lying is a crime but, when it comes with Muslims laying is better than other crimes they are committing against the rest.

So, don’t expect anything good, right and acceptable from them but the opposite ones.

That is why stories, articles or comments coming from any Muslim are always full of lies that has always directly or indirectly with that so called they call it “religion". What kind religion is that?

They are always laying about anything and inflaming something bad in the name of their religion. Some brain washed Muslims are worst than the actual ones. Because they have been told and they behave not themselves but like trained wild animals in the circus. The Ethiopian fanatic Muslims are brainwashed as they don’t understand that book and they became Muslims the first place not by choice but with force or selling out their soul for oil money . That money is gone, but they remain savage and trouble makers against the innocent and peace loving mass.

It makes sick and vomiting on you hearing individuals like you associating blessed Ethiopia with that Satanic evil so called religion the desert people imposed on you.

Yes, defense to you means burning churches, killing Christians and behave as primitives with that dress of yours on you especially when witnessing it your victim of religion women are wearing it.

What the Muslims did in Keffa and not long ago in the south burning 59 churches in one day is defense to you? We also know what happened times after times against the Christians by muslims.

I think Ethiopians must deal now with the Barbaric Muslim ideology before it is too late.

Go to the desert to feel home there. There even they don’t see you as a human being. They see you as a slave and a human thing not being. You know, we know and everyone knows that the worst racist against Africans/blacks are the Arabs not Europeans. The longest and worst black African slave trade was done by the Arabs. In Saudi Arabia it was legally abolished in 1962. But the practice is still going on in those areas. Islam allows slavery.

You, go to that hell desert. Remember, You have no place in Ethiopia particularly in the water rich, the fertile soil and best weather Highland. We will never ever allow Islam gets root in the Highland. We fought it for 1400 years and this is the best time Ethiopia ever has when many friends are here, there and everywhere to stand for/with her.

Islam is not the problem only to Ethiopia but the world especialy the worst peroblem to Europe, Australia and North America I.e Canada and USA.

MR. Jawar has written a very interesting presentation on Islamic revivalism, its place within the Ethiopian society and its future aspirations and why Ethiopian Muslims should be participants in the economic and political events in the country. Mr. Jawar’s own words were, “while Ethiopian Muslims do show solidarity with their global fellows on spiritual matters, their socioeconomic grievances and political demands are directed towards the Ethiopian state”. There is nothing wrong with that as long as these words mean what they say, they do not have any ramifications, that Ethiopia, our country and home is dear to Ethiopian Christians and Muslims alike, and the allegiance of any Ethiopian is to Ethiopia and not to the Christian Countries of the World, nor to the Muslim World, and that the writer conveys to us the reality that exists on the ground within our Muslim society and not his personal wishful conclusion as a political analyst living outside Ethiopia.

Ethiopian Muslims and Christians will continue to transcend boarders and dividing lines as long as they avoid all sectarian worldviews, as they have done so maybe over the last century. The reality is that Ethiopian Muslims are moving forward, although some continue to deny this. Even in our own lifetime important changes have taken place for the better, albeit not yet fully satisfactory. Nevertheless, the thing our Muslim brothers should be aware of and should fight with all their power, is foreign sinister influences, which are meant to create a chasm between the two communities with the aim to destroy Ethiopia.

A political party/group formed on religious ideology/identity is a recipe for disaster. Unlike tribal/ethnic parties, thanks God, we are up to now immune to religiously oriented parties, and I hope that this trend will continue in the future.

The sinister plan by the regime to use religion to control the people of Ethiopia in order to widen its hegemony should be resisted by Christians and Muslims alike. Religion should not be the instrument of any power struggle, whatsoever. Unfortunately, ethnic politics has already under its control the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, and now it is targeting Mosques and Muslim religious leaders. Ethiopian Christians and Muslims should unite to resist this sinister plan by TPLF.

I want to congradulate the writer a young brilliant Oromo Muslim Ethiopian scholar for his unbending stance to challenge the coward neftegnas who live in the past. As always he does not mix politics with facts and reality.

We know the Amhara elites will never buy to you. They will always complain you are hidden Oromo and now you will say you are a terrorist. My piece of advice is Amhara culture believes in terrorizing good people like Lij Eyasu and never tolerates a muslim to be in power and will force him to convert like King Michael of Wollo his father. My own Amhara folks never considered my parents as indigeneous.

No matter what good intentions you have it will never cross the skeptical Amharas. It is nazret that publishes such articles to warn the Amharas the stakes at hand.

Before i go into the main point which is to respond to the comments above, I want to make it clear that the Amhara culture will never come back to Ethiopia. The Hadiyas are tired of it, the Walayta are tired of it, the Gurages are tired of it, The Tigrays are tired of it, the Afars are tired of it, the Hararis are tired of it.

The only reason that looks like the Amhara are alive is because of the language. I urge the diaspora opposition to change their language into English Arabic oromiya or something else that can substitute Amharic. With this we will make Amhara culture out of the game.

Other than that, those comments are really indeed a sign of terrorists who are ignorant. If you guys are not terrorists who can be.

It is true that Islam was introduced to Africa through Axum. But the King himself was a Muslim from christianity. Are you, t7, going to deny that he was Ethiopian because he was a Muslim? Are you going to send his body back to Saudi to which he has no relationship. Because that is what it means when you say Islam is guest. The religion is a guest like that of christianity. The people are Axumites or Amhara. Christianity was welcomed by the paganist Ezana from Syria. In fact, they lived there and their blood mixed with Ethiopians. That is why North has fair skin color. Some Saudis also may have left some genes but the majority is cushitik Afar or Amhara blood.

Don’t also forget that Axumite people were not controlling the Afars. Afars need to be thanked for allowing Muslims to pass through the coast of Mastawa.

Now, Islam in the North of Ethiopia is the lowest in number despite being the first believers. Why? only 10 % of Amhara or Tigre are Muslim. Hence, Islam was never successful in the North. How come the South east is 99% Muslim. The reason is not Axum Muslims allowed it to pass because they were under siege.
Had it not been for Harar as second time port for Islam from Yemen Islam would never have grown in Ethiopia.

Clearly, one would not confuse Axum with Ethiopia. Axum at the time was limited to Tigray only and the Ethiopia we know never existed before Menelik II.

So, We Muslims owe only Axum and not the whole Ethiopian Muslims owe Axum; only Axumite Muslims do.

The truth is even Axumite Muslims had christian forefathers.

But from what I see in this website reason is not what they know. They are arrogant and think they know for us better. So Jawar continue with your thing but never believe that there will be one person who likes your idea among Amharas or Tigres. They even tried to convert Amhara and Tigre Muslims by force.

The only that works is to use force and crush every little brain christian. I don’t know why Christians are always hard headed and think they know better. We have no choice but to teach them a lesson. If we are guests, we will prove it to you that you are guests too. These copts never believe in equality, they are happy to see other people suffer. The population of Amhara is only 20 million, they control with their toxin ideas the whole of 50 million South and East Ethiopia.

Can we start to eliminate this north first by choosing a common language????

GEDION--NASHVILLE,TN

Incompatible religious doctrines have balkanized our world into separate moral communities, and these divisions have become a continuous source of bloodshed. Indeed, religion is as much a living spring of violence today as it has been at any time in the past. The recent conflicts in Palestine (Jews vs. Muslims), the Balkans (Orthodox Serbians vs. Catholic Croatians; Orthodox Serbians vs. Bosnian and Albanian Muslims), Northern Ireland (Protestants vs. Catholics), Kashmir (Muslims vs. Hindus), Sudan (Muslims vs. Christians and animists), Nigeria (Muslims vs. Christians), Ethiopia and Eritrea (Muslims vs. Christians), Sri Lanka (Sinhalese Buddhists vs. Tamil Hindus), Indonesia (Muslims vs. Timorese Christians), Iran and Iraq (Shiite vs. Sunni Muslims), and the Caucasus (Orthodox Russians vs. Chechen Muslims; Muslim Azerbaijanis vs. Catholic and Orthodox Armenians) are merely a few cases in point. These are places where religion has been the explicit cause of literally millions of deaths in recent decades.

Why is religion such a potent source of violence? There is no other sphere of discourse in which human beings so fully articulate their differences from one another, or cast these differences in terms of everlasting rewards and punishments. Religion is the one endeavor in which us–them thinking achieves a transcendent significance. If you really believe that calling God by the right name can spell the difference between eternal happiness and eternal suffering, then it becomes quite reasonable to treat heretics and unbelievers rather badly. The stakes of our religious differences are immeasurably higher than those born of mere tribalism, racism, or politics.”

Mr Omo is well intent person. Again, you are a bit naive or gullible I may dare say to believe that Ethiopian Muslims conspired against any foreign element. You are reading history of Ethiopia written by souless historians whose purpose was to serve Kings at any cost or
priests. Consider Gragn Ahmed, what ever his intentions, no one can deny he loved the mountains of Tigray, Gondar, Asmara , Denbia and he died for it fighting a christian Empire assisted by a super power Portugese a catholic vanguard of christianity at the time.

So, to picture Ethiopian kings as sole guardians of Ethiopia is baseless assertion as they were protected by foreign Imperial christians. Some people assume just because Islam promotes globalization it means hating one’s country. I think this is common misconception. Europeans used christianity to forge alliance with African powers such as Ethiopia and from past conversations we knew letters were exchanged betwen Kings in the name of religion, christianity. Even before Turkey, we knew Ethiopia had been promoting christian alliance with others. In that case to blame Muslim Ethiopians as traitors was a bit of over blown accusation. The fact is Muslims were defending their Muslim Ethiopia as the christians were defending christian Ethiopia.

We were unable to see the light because of one sided version of the story. You may not like Gragn Ahmed as I don’t like Menelik II or Haile Selasie. But the truth is they fought for Ethiopia albiet in a different version.

Until, we appreciate this fact, we can not continue to live in harmony.

Growing Muslim Jihadism, not Muslim activism, in the Christian land of Ethiopia is a great concern for all indigenous Ethiopian Christians as well as for the new Ethiopian Evangelical Christians whose Churches and schools were recently burned down by the radical Ethiopian Muslims. Even though, Mr. Jawar Mohammed seems to be afraid of mentioning the name of the imported religion he is talking about repeatedly, I am sure he is referring to the Ethiopian Evangelical Christians who are doing a great job in Ethiopia by converting several Ethiopian Muslims to Christianity. The only blunder these Ethiopian Evangelical Christians have been committing so far is trying to convert the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Christian children to their type of baptism, believing the former baptism of these Ethiopian Christian children is invalid, which is not at all.

Mr. Jawar Mohammed argues the Ethiopian Muslims have given up their ancestral occupations – trade and pastoralism. He believes they have left trade because of great competition with the Ethiopian Christians, and they have left pastoralism because of “climate change.” The indigenous Ethiopians have been traders from the ancient times before Islam came to Ethiopia. Ethiopian Muslims have not been the only traders and the only pastoralists. In fact, it was the Ethiopian merchants who traded with the Jerusalem merchants and brought to the Ethiopian Queen, Queen Sheba, great news about the wisdom and fame of King Solomon; especially, the name of the Ethiopian great merchant was Tamrin who fascinated Queen Sheba by the stories he brought from Jerusalem. So to say the Ethiopian Muslims have been the dominant traders in Ethiopia is absolutely wrong, and the same thing goes with pastoralism. Most of the Ethiopian people have been farmers and raisers of domestic animals, not only the Ethiopian Muslims on this field. Climate change occurs every time where some Ethiopian Muslims and some Ethiopian Christians live. It is not a phenomenon that happens only on places where the Ethiopian Muslims reside as Mr. Jawar Mohammed seems to suggest.

It is true the Ethiopian Muslim children have been graduating in great number and the same is true a great number of Ethiopian Christian children are also gradating every year; however, the Ethiopian Muslim-college-graduates are not the only ones who have a hard time in finding a job in Ethiopia; most Ethiopian graduates have the same problem, but Mr. Jawar Muhammad demands the Ethiopian government must accommodate the Ethiopian Muslims and treat them in a special way by offering them high paying jobs and high government offices. He believes “…the policies and tactics of the current regime have resulted in the weakening of the autonomy of Islamic institutions, and consequently generating negative reactions from Muslim society towards the state.”
I do not believe Ethiopian Muslim institutions should be given autonomy: they rather must be encouraged to integrate to the Ethiopian Christian society; learn together with the Ethiopian Christian students, suffer together and die together.
Once Ethiopian Muslims are given autonomy, their next demand will be to build a Mosque next to the Holy City of Axum Zion, to establish the Sharia law as the law of the Christian land of Ethiopia, and to replace the Ethiopian Christian kingdom with the old Caliphate Muslim kingdom as, right now, hundreds of Tunisian Muslim women are demanding their Islamic government to establish a Muslim Caliphate in Tunisia:
“(AFP) Hundreds of Muslim women gathered near Tunis Saturday to call for the return of the caliphate, the defunct Islamic system of governance which they said was the only means of guaranteeing their rights.”
Islamic autonomy for the Ethiopian Muslims brings more harm to the Ethiopian Christians than to the Ethiopian Muslims. What good has the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood brought to the Egyptian minority Coptic Christians, except more suppression and oppression?
Is it true, Mr. Mohammed, Ethiopian Muslims are half of the entire Ethiopian population, and where do you get your evidence that supports your claim? Having learned the Ethiopian Muslim population has reached to this high number, you have become very confident and finally wrote this divisive article to galvanize radicalization of the dormant Ethiopian Muslims. Encouraged by the great number of your Muslim population in the Christian land of Ethiopia, you wrote confidently: “…Islamic revivalism has been intensified in the last two decades.”
Yes, since 9/11, thousands of Christians have been murdered in Nigeria, in Somalia, in Sudan, in Yemen, in Pakistan, in Iraq, in Iran, and in many other Islamic countries, and this is what you call “Islamic revivalism,” and you want to introduce such violent revivalism to the peace-loving of the Ethiopian people. You want especial treatment, especial government offices, and an Islamic autonomy for the Ethiopian Muslims.
Mr. Mohammed’s deep-rooted hatred toward the Christian kingdom has become clearer when he stated, “Generally, in imperial Ethiopia, Muslim elites neither demanded nor were they welcomed for participation in the political class.” Mr. Mohammed is incorrect because during the Ethiopian Christina kingdom, many Ethiopian Muslims had been appointed to prominent positions, and one of these Ethiopian Muslims, for example, was Sultan Alimrah. Ethiopian Christian kings had never discriminated the Ethiopian Muslims like the Saudi king and the other Arab-Muslim leaders who have humiliated, discriminated, jailed, beaten up, raped, and killed many innocent Ethiopian girls.
Mr. Jawar Mohammed is absolutely right the Ethiopian Muslims hated the close relationship between the Ethiopian Christian government and the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church. They badly wanted to see the downfall of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church when it was declared the Church and the state must be separated. The Ethiopian Muslims were very elated when they witnessed this phenomenon.
In Mr. Jawar Mohammed’s view Ethiopian Muslims were vey unhappy about the unity of Christianity and state. He writes: “The Leftist’s endorsement of the demand and eventual success of separating religion and the state removed what at the time was the main source of grievance for Muslims.” Mr. Jawar’s view indicates the Ethiopian Muslims had been etching to see the separation of the Ethiopian Christian state from the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church as they are now praying for the complete destruction of this famous and historical Church – the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church.
Mr. Jawar further warns the Ethiopian Christian government to provide jobs for the young Ethiopian Muslims; otherwise, these young Ethiopian Muslims will become radical Muslims or will continue to increase their Islamic activism. He says: “The inability and/or unwillingness of the government to fulfill these expectations and address the demands are one of the key factors behind the increased Muslim activism we are observing.” This means, if the Christian government fails to hire the Ethiopian Muslims, these Ethiopian Muslims will become Jihadists and destroy the establishment of the Christian kingdom, and Mr. Jawar is witnessing this development which the Ethiopian Muslim elites are working under cover or with the help of the Saudi government.
No one has ever witnessed or seen a Muslim progress of revivalism, free of radicalism, conflict of interest, and greed for power and lust. However, Mr. Jawar admires the Ethiopian Muslims revivalism, which I don’t see happening in Ethiopia except the burning of Christian Churches.
Supporting such a non-existent Muslim revivalism, Mr. Jawar simply rejuvenates himself and writes from his heart: “It is quite impressive that, while incidents of isolated confrontations were observed during earlier stages, with time, both sides have matured and developed a more sophisticated campaign strategy and ensured the peaceful progress of this revivalism.”
If there were such words as “peaceful revivalism” in Islam, the Sharia law that stones an adulterous Muslim woman to death, a Quran that teaches its adherents to hate the Christians and the Jews, a Quran that allows the beating of a woman, and a Quran that permits the killing of an apostate could have been abolished long time ago.
Mr. Jawar Mohammed, if you want the Ethiopian Muslims to join the civilized world, amend Islam, amend Quran, and amend the Sharia law first; then you can say there is a peaceful revivalism in the Ethiopian Muslim communities. If you fail to revise and amend Islam, the Ethiopian Christian government has no obligation to accommodate the Ethiopian Muslim Jihadists with jobs, safety, and education opportunities, and no “adjustment” is required from the Ethiopian government on the issue of accommodating the Ethiopian Muslims.
I am very troubled by your unbalanced statement, Mr. Jawar, and you are forgetting you are living in the Christian land of Ethiopia. You boldly wrote: “…the unchanging state identity is one of the remaining obstacles that keeps Muslims feeling as if they are strangers in their own home. Despite symbolic equality and greater government tolerance towards religious communities, the identity of the Ethiopian state, both its symbols and composition, remains closely attached to Christianity. To see this one only needs to visit the embassies and ministries.”
With all my respect to you, Mr. Jawar Mohammad, the identity of the Ethiopian state has been, for hundreds of years, Christianity, and it will remain so for eternity. If you call our Christian identity as one of the obstacles for Ethiopian Muslims to progress and to their revivalism, tell your Ethiopian Muslims to pack up their belongings and leave our Christian country and go to any one of the Arab-Muslim countries that recognizes your Islamic identity – the Crescent and the worship in one allah- the Moon god! To tell you the truth, the true identities of Muslims are conflict, murder, deception, taqiyya, immorality, and greed for power and lust. Whenever I hear the name “Islam,” what comes to my mind is the 9/11 incident and the bombing of Churches and the killing of innocent Nigerian Christians. Who cares about the “the emerging Muslim youth,” if this Muslim youth does not believe in the identity of the Ethiopian Christians – Jesus Christ, the true Son of the Almighty God and the only Savior of the world?
Ethiopia is not the only country that has banned Ethiopian Muslim girls to wear hijab; there are other Christian countries that do not allow Muslim girls with their hijab to go to school, and France is one of them. If wearing hijab and growing long beard are the identities of Muslims, then wearing cross is the identity of Christians, and we cannot prohibit Christians from wearing crosses because cross symbolizes the crucified Lord Jesus Christ even though you Muslims don’t believe that Jesus was crucified and died on the cross.
It is real; it is not an old slogan as Mr. Jawar has characterized the glorious past history of the Ethiopian Christian kingdom.
Mr. Jawar ridicules the past history of the Ethiopian people when he shamelessly declares: “Therefore, the old slogan of transforming and building a new Ethiopia is replaced with reviving and reclaiming the glorious past. Since the historically marginalized segments of the population, including Muslims, have a less rosy interpretation of that past, the narratives being pushed by the state are hopelessly familiar in their message to them.”
Ethiopia always remembers her glorious Christian history achieved by the blood of her Christian kings and queens in the battlefield with her historical adversaries – the Muslims and her other enemies. It is a must that Ethiopia should teach her children to recite her past Christian history at school, at the dinner table, and in the Church. Why do Muslim children are forced to recite Quran at their school? Isn’t it to remember their prophet Muhammad who slaughtered millions of Christians and Jews and forced the rest to accept Islam?

Jawar believes the mistreatment of Ethiopian Muslims by the Ethiopian Christian kingdom would lead to “empower hardliners while weakening moderates.” Are there really moderate Muslims on this earth of ours? Yes, some Muslims appear to be moderate when they know their number is smaller than the Christians, but as soon as they recognize they are the majority, then they become radicals, and this is the pattern they demonstrate all over the world. It is, I assume, this pattern that forced Mr. Jawar Mohammad to write this article to tell the Ethiopian Muslims that they are half of the 90 million Ethiopians; therefore, it is time for them to challenge the Ethiopian Christian Kingdom and the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church.
What isolates Muslims from participating in major world affairs is that Muslims do not keep their words, their promises, and they do not reveal their hidden agenda – to dominate the world. Muslims are allowed to tell a lie to a Christian or to a Jew, and to change their vow for the better one; therefore, no one trusts Muslims, and it is the safest way to mistrust Muslims for a safety reason if not for a theological or doctrinal view.
Don’t be fooled, Mr. Jawar, there is no such a thing as “multi-faith society” in the Christian land of Ethiopia. There is only one recognized faith in Ethiopia, and that faith is Christianity. And you are preaching Islam to change that one faith concept, the concept of the Ethiopian Christians. Don’t blame Ethiopia, Mr. Jawar, for not producing many Ethiopian Muslim scholars; in fact, Ethiopian has produced thousands of Muslim scholars, and you are one of them who have failed to appreciate this Christian land of Ethiopia for educating you even though you still believe in Quran that subjugates Muslim women.
Muslims never learn moderation because their prophet Muhammad was not a moderate person, and they have learned radicalism, hostility, and hatred from him, and Quran is full of hate and hostility. And as I have said earlier, you must change the teaching of Quran and the teaching of Hadith; then moderation will come easily.
During the Caliphate era, Islam was a centralized state religion, but after the fall of the Caliphate Islam became decentralized and no one knows who the galvanizing force of the over one billion Muslims is. And the main reason Muslims have failed to moderate their Quran is they don’t have a centralized Islamic government.
As Muslims have been taught by their Prophet Muhammad to hate Christians and Jews, and other non-Muslims, the nervousness of Muslims all over the world increases. For example, the slaughtering of the Jewish children at a Jewish school in France by a Muslim man, few days ago, sends a terrorizing effect to the entire French Muslims and the French Jews.
Mr. Jawar rites: “Given the global climate today, such stress would obviously cause nervousness and concern among internal and external stakeholders –and rightly so.” The solution for such Muslims’ nervousness, according to Mr. Jawar, is to encourage Muslim activism and revivalism in Ethiopia and to stop misrepresenting the two as radicalization of the Ethiopian Muslims.
The author of this article finally admits the Ethiopian Muslims have strong connections and solidarity with other foreign Muslims. It is this type of connection, whether it is spiritual or mundane the Ethiopian Muslims are importing foreign ideology and radicalism that teaches them to burn Christian Churches and to demand the Ethiopian Christian authorities to give them special treatment. He writes to this effect: “…while Ethiopian Muslims do show solidarity with their global fellows on spiritual matters, their socioeconomic grievances and political demands are directed towards the Ethiopian state.” Here is the main point that bothers me a lot: Why don’t the Ethiopian Muslims show their solidarities with their fellow Ethiopians rather than with her enemies, the Saudi Muslims, the Egyptian Muslims, the Lebanese Muslims, the Somali Muslims, and all the rest of the Arab-Muslim world? But when it comes to their daily needs, to their protection, and to their education, then they have to look to the Ethiopian Christian government. It doesn’t work that way, Mr. Jawar Mohammed!
Mr. Mohammed, you have forgotten to tell me the demands of Gragn Muhammad as he was destroying the Ethiopian Churches and monasteries: weren’t his demands for the Islamization of the Ethiopian Christians? Forgetting this historical fact, you asserted your Islamic views: “…neither in the past nor now has there been a demand for the establishment of an exclusive Islamic political entity, nor has there been advocacy for the imposition of Islam on the rest.” Ethiopian Muslims as well as foreign Muslims have always wanted to convert the Ethiopian Christians to Islam, but they all failed, thanks to our heroic Ethiopian Christian fathers who kept our Christian faith intact up to this day.
Why do you advocate democratic order, freedom, and the rule of law in Ethiopia when you know perfectly there is no freedom in the Islamic teaching? If you believe in freedom, let your Muslims women be free, let the apostates live openly rather than live in hiding for the rest of their lives, and let Islamization be voluntarily rather than by force, intimidation, and threat.
As far as there are millions of backward Muslims in Ethiopia, Muslims who have strong solidarity with foreign Jihadist agents, there will be no progress in Ethiopia. The solution is these Ethiopian Muslims must accept Christianity or leave the country. The choice is theirs as always.

As much as I don`t like the racist TPLF led government, their action against the awaliya administration is appropriate. The Ethiopia I know is one where muslims help build a church and christians help build a mosque. Recenetly we are witnessing radicalised groups burning churchs and killing their neighbours. I am not in a position of acusing awalia educated leaders for these actions, but I tend to agree with the governments stance that radicalised elements are flourishing. I wouldn`t be surprised if a Saudi government run institution is to blame for the radicalisation happening. I think the government needs to dismantle the institution it belives is radicalising muslims. Ethiopia is a country for all…religious or not muslim or christian, poor or rich, this ethnic group or that…we are not like Saud Arabiya where women are treated like subhumans, or christians have to hide their beliefs from the authorities. We don`t want such rubish in Ethiopia.

This may be off this topic but I got one question for Mr. Jawar. I thought he is the right person to ask as he writes about OLF and now about Muslims. My questions…what do you know about Islamic Front For Liberation of Oromo (IFLO a.k.a. jarra)? What role does people from that group have in current OLF? Which OLF camp are they in (I have my own suspetion)? From their actions I witnessed while in Ethiopia (killing children (cut throats) infront of their parents, slaying women who are not oromo muslims…) they were the most extrimists…

the problem with current Muslim community in Ethiopia is more of an indoctrination of the Wahabi teaching, The Ethiopian Muslims lived in harmony with other faith till the Saudi started to fund Islamic schools and radical teaching.
The problem with this radicalism, it doesn’t focus in religious teaching rather focus on teaching and believing the ultimate earthly governance is the one which is based it self on Sharia law, that doesn’t comply with democracy.
The writer misses the point, you can’t be both entity at the same time, that is the big dillema in radical Islam teaching. the Muslims community must understand and choose
to live in harmony with other faith and not interfere in politics

Gragn Ahmed:

Stupid. You don’t know yourself who really you are. You are living while breathing with a fiction history of yours.

Yes, Gragn Mohammed who was a Nomadic backward militia used by Ottomans and their slave Arabs (colonized by Turkey for more than 500 years), is the reason why the Gallas able to migrate like flood water/animal into Ethiopia. Because of the war, the people in the south and central were unable to stop the savage and animal type of Galla migration. They were just following the animals and take the land and kill the people they found in front of them.

Oromo which is the name since 1974 and never been heard or found in any historical book anywhere on earth. It was Galla and this name was given to you by the Arabs. Yet, today you are associating with them because of Islam they are using it to enslave and use you like tools and goods.

Some facts about Oromo (Galla):

-29 Clans, thousands sub clans and ten thousands sub sub clans and the division continues until the village level.
- There are Mecha and Tulema; Arsi, negele… en Boren Oromos. Meaning three different Ethnic groups. These three groups have many differences to one another such as the boren and some Arsi, negele… are originally Bantus. Most of them are Muslims. Mecha and Tulema is a very different race. And most of them are Christians.

The difference between within the Oromo is much visible and clear than the difference between Amhara and Tigre. Boren Oromo doesn’t understand the Oromo from wolega and in the North. They have different tradition, culture, and custom. But, Tigre and Amhara have the same tradition, Culture, Custom and they look the same.

40+ % Oromo are Christians.
55+ are Muslims
5% are Traditional believers.

Take Somalia:

5 clans, 100s sub clans and 1000s sub sub clans. They have the same language and religion. They are also Bantus there. Yet, look at them.

Do you think even in a million year Oromo (Galla) would become as a nation even if we accept the fiction history of yours and allow you to be yourself? No. You will never ever be united even for one hour with such huge differences one another with in yourself.

I don’t know who did it. But if the three different so called Oromos are counting as one Ethnic group, why not the Amhara and Tigre is be seen as one Ethnic group. Because these two have the same tradition, culture, custom, they look like the same, they have the same history and everything with them is almost identical. The one who speaks Tigrigna can easily understand Amharic than the Boren Oromo and wolega oromos speaking Oromigna.

So, don’t painting your valueless hateful idea here. You have no idea what kind problem you have within yourself. The Answer is simple and one. That is one Ethiopia for all regardless Ethnic, race or religion.

To make it clear, the biggest problem in Ethiopia and elsewhere will be no race or Ethnic but religion which Islam on one side and the rest on the other. Do you think almost 50-50 divided religion differences within Oromos, there would be a unity within? No. Never. Just have a day dream that will never materialize.

As always, Mr. Jewhar, a brilliant and insightful piece regarding the current crisis between the Muslim community and the government. Needles to say, among Ethiopian intellectuals, non one comes even closer to the type of analysis you provide time and again. Even though I have read some of the bone-headed reactions from the comments sections, please keep up the good work. I have to say I concur with almost everything in your piece except for a part where you mentioned that the recent actions of the government could be in part to the wrong advice given by the “leaders” of the Islamic “leaders” (Islamic Affairs Council- IAC). I could tell you from my personal experience that it is not so. The Muslim community views both the IAC and the government in the same light; both of them are working to undermine the development of the Muslim community and keep it where it had always belonged, as a second-class citizen. But as you have pointed out clearly, those days are gone. The Islamic community is not where it was twenty or even ten years ago. No one can hold back that progress, but it is the up to the government and the Christian community to level the playing field and make the opportunities equal for everyone. There is no other option. Days of subservience are gone.

Very interesting. This is the first article by Mr Jawar Mohammed that I’ve read fully & it is certainly time well spent. He appears to be very intelligent, articulate, well balanced individual. Most importantly, he focused on the CORE POINTS that he tries to communicate/address without overstepping into uncharted territories like some Ethiopian writers often do. For that, I admire his professionalism, keeping it cool, clean and staying as far away as possible from emotionally charged rhetoric, over-sensitivity, double standard, deluded, distorted, one sided accounts of events etc that Most Muslims suffer from in grandiose scale!

Having said that, the article still remains fairly simplistic, short sited and lacks in depth analysis of many other detrimental/historic factors, which could have been applied to validate his FOUR CORE FACTORS further, make the issues he’d put forth, exclusive to the Muslim population. As a result, most of the scenarios he specified, explained above are universal, could easily be applied to non MUSLIMS as well.

For instance, detrimental changes taking place in current Ethiopia, the shift in socio/economics, dynamics, more alert society, technology facilitating towards the awareness of global, local social, economic, political educational as well as RELIGIOUS factors and many other sub points he discussed are UNIVERSAL and NOT exclusive to Muslims in Ethiopia! Nor did those FACTORS encourage non Muslims to become radical activists, go around burning mosques. If you know what I mean?

Nonetheless, he was spot on, very HONEST, STRAIGHTFORWARD enough to tell some crazed, mentally deranged Muslim fanatics such as (Gragn House Nigger Somali) AS TO WHY the Muslim population in Ethiopia remained undereducated, under-represented within the political, education systems for 100s of years. I said that before here and he is saying it again! Everybody sane Ethiopian knows that Ethiopian Muslims are traditionally business people/traders as he put it and mostly Pastoralists who actually believed that there was no need to send their children to school. Additionally, the nature of their business meant that, they had to keep a NEUTRAL stance when it comes to political, national issues as they felt their businesses would have somewhat suffered if they’d interfered.

Most Muslims CHOSE to take the easy, SELFISH and comfortable path until very recently when the TPLFs tampered with their traditional business environments and overcrowded their turf. Not because they were oppressed, discriminated against, their heads being chopped off with machete or chased out of mainstream education/politics with guns as the most RETARDED balloon head, Muslim Radical clown of Nazret.com (Gragn House Nigger Somali) would have us believe.

Other than that, most of the other issue that Jawar covered i.e. TPLFs using religious figures such as the shameless, disgraceful Orthodox Patriarch, whatever his name is for political purposes, Stagnant, undemocratic state, that is unable to accommodate the ever increasing social, economic, political, structural, systematic inclusion/ fairness demand within society are NOT just limited to the the Muslim population.

… Therefore it is safe to conclude that although Mr Mohammed made a very good point, sound analysis above, the UNDERLYING problem of Muslim fanaticism be it in Ethiopia or globally is directly linked with EXCESS ARAB PETROL DOLLAR & FANATICISM. It stems from the desire of those retarded Arab states to radicalize, Islamize, Arabize countries like Ethiopia with substantial number of Muslim population. Arab radicals are comfortably using all the above legitimate FACTORS, societies dissatisfaction that (Jawar covered above) to create havoc, spread Islam, instigate religious unrest in countries such as Ethiopia or else where with their petrol dollar’s help of ill-information dissemination, infiltration of other nations.

If anything, current Ethio government is full of pagans, Lucifer’s children who couldn’t careless about religion. Islam or Christian. Henceforth, paying religious card in today’s Ethio political system will be playing an old, useless & tired card!

I will ask one simple question and rest my case:

Does the writes honestly believes that those individuals within the TPLF government, fronting Christian names, surnames represent the interest of Christian Ethiopians? If you answer YES, then you need to make better use of your heads and donate it to your local churches to be used as “Kebero".

Dear Jawar WE
Today some fanatic Muslims are trying to ignite some fire by making the Islam and Christian religion as a tool to succeed their political goal. Terrorists are always being terrorist weather they are Fanatic Orthodox or Muslim.
The Opposition in Washington DC trying to overturn the existing government from power, they start using churches and mosques as a big tool by destroying them. They also agitating the people in the churches or Mosques trying to protesting to get political power.
Birtukan Medekisa wills never successful by being puppet for the DC government. Obama has no way to deny the fast development of Ethiopia and the 3000 years old Amhara dynasty which oppressed the entire Ethiopians by their iron fist rule.
Terrorists must be punished where ever they have been found in the church or in the Mosque. As we know, today the Orthodox Church is become the political discussion podium instead of worshiping in God and prying for better Ethiopia. All the Ethiopian Orthodox churches are connected where ever they are, because they felt that they are true believers of God, as well they are most respected dignified people than the rest of Ethiopians to be on power.98% of the believers are from Amhara tribe. They felt as they are loosing power, so they have to make some case to pursue the government. They are spreading some false and fake made up story ( Yenesew Gebre (fake named mad man hanged himself)) to make disturbances, but they are very much inched to be in the worst ever loss, which is the biggest of all and the final fall of Amhara elite’s struggle for power. The reason for that is 90%Ethiopians believing in Government.
In my belief the place where the churches or Mosques built need referendum weather the majority of the area people agrees or not the where they have been built, also, are they giving enough taxis for the government the land which they are using?
There are some sympathizers also in Awaliya Mosque and taxi drivers where the real terrorists trying to make coup d’état in their dream. Somebody must be punished for the sake of Ethiopia’s peace and security.
Jawar Mohammed, another Yenesew Gebre who don’t read his own history, being puppet for Amhara tribe and he is ready as usual to be enslaved. The Kamal Galchu is one of the puppets for Eritrean government who pretended as he stands for Oromo people, but the Oromo people will not and shall not stand for Kemal’s revenge stand against the government which he left the country for not having positions in the army. The story his talking and the contradiction why he left the country was different and it is just fake story to deceive the people of Oromo. The so called fake big names will soon end with great regrets.

We have many morons, fanatics, and ignorants in this room But two of them stand out as major symbols of Ethiopia especially advocated for glory of amhara a.k.a Ethiopia, namely, Assta Getu and Amhara Prostitute. These people don’t mean Ethiopia as for all they mean Amhara is synonymous with Ethiopia.

First off, I don’t need any good words from you guys.

But let me make it clear. Do Ethiopian Christians ever care for Muslims? Do ever Ethiopian christians believe in their heart their Muslim brothers are equal full citizens? Do Ethiopian people of christianity believe Islam is peaceful? Do Ethiopian christians believe Islam can rule? Do Ethiopian christians practicing and non practicing ever believe that the Ethiopia we know is equal for Muslims? Do Ethiopian christians do ever believe that Ethiopian Kings were not christian? Do Ethiopian christians believe Muslims were oppressed based on religion? Do Ethiopian christians ever believe Ethiopian Muslims deserve a big Mosque next to the Palace, Axum, etc. The answer to all of the questions are big NO NO NO.

So, tell me mr Mortar or other naive Muslims who think that their friend christians ever believe that they are equals. That their land was taken by force. We have seen again simple trash answers from Amhara pieces and her colleagues that Kings of Ethiopia are not necessarily christian especially the Meles regime.

Tell me which one of the Meles cabinet does not believe that Christianity is dominant and deserves more respect. Did not the Prime Minister inform the Badr delegation in 2007 that the Axum problem is beyond his reach.

Does Meles really respect his own constitution or the Bible of Axum?

Does Sebahat Nega really think Muslims are equal. Does he not think like many moron christians Ethiopia is christian land?

Does not the defense Minister Tseye Abaraha openly ridiculed the Ethiopian Muslims. Will he do for Ethiopian christians?

Will ever any leader touch the Ethiopian orthodox? What does this show? Does not the Meles people boast they have power to control every east African land. Fear is oe thing, but I don’t think Meles is afraid to speak up his mind if he believes in it without worrying about losing his own church backers of Amhara or Tigre.

The fact is Meles does not believe in equality of Muslims. Why? Does he know a Muslim who harmed him? Did he not use Muslims country’s passport? Did he not live in Muslim land? Did he not get Muslim Arab help?

The fact is not Meles is afraid of terrorism or extremism. He is not even afraid of coupedeta. He is not afraid of losig his church.

He simply is die hard christian who does not go to Church but he is an orthodox at heart. He still cares about Axum legend as christian host to Islam.

The fact is every Ethiopian christian does not want to see Islam to come to power. Why? Because they know what they have done to Muslims. Systematically abusing them verbally.

So my naive Muslims Ethiopians: if some christian says he loves you that is because:
You act like him.
You drink with him.
You club with him.or her
You wear like him.
You behave like him.

So my naive Ethiopian Muslims: if a christian says he does not like you, then that is because:
You go to church.
You avoid clubing.
You wear Islamic.
You are avoiding chat.

So, tell me if you want to choose to be hated by them or to be loved by them. For me if one tries to act superior, to act important, to belittle myself then I am out.

This is the unfortunate mentality of copts. They teach us, they are educated, they are Kings, they are glorious, they are somewhat little inventors. These are all garbages. Freedom comes first. Awolia is just doing that. Assta Getu seems lot when Jawar talks about Muslim peaceful moevement. The Awolia people have made 11 rounds of protests in their camp reaching half a million. government is now trying to misled people by labeling them as terrorists with foreign agenda.

I urge the Saudi government to intervene in Awolia case and demand govt explanation for misrepresenting people movement from terrorism. Dagnachew Worku although I support what you predicted on the fall of Amhara don’t agree with your idea of Awolia as terrorism. You are saying the whole of Addis is terrorist. If that is the case so be it. The fact of the matter is these children are ours who believe in Abay dam, in good Ethiopia and in peaceful Ethiopia.

To say that Ethiopia is safe only when she is orthodox is one of the most racist and very dogmatic view I ever heard.

The peaceful rise of Ethiopia is a necessity for peaceful Ethiopia. Ethiopia does not need a terrorist to bring Islam to power. We Ethiopian Muslims have immense power which we can unleash if we want to bring Ethiopian King or Emperor to its kneel.

We have used it to bring Emperor Haile Selasie to give up his power. The past mistakes that Ethiopian Muslims did was they were too naive to assume that the Leftist liberals of Derg, Meison, student movement, and other socially progressive Institutions and scholars would promote equality. That idea became somewhat realistic in the Derg era but Derg never went enough to give us the power share or the legitimacy we need. As of right now Islam is considered as an NGO institution and its permit expires every three years.
Where as the Church is still under State sanction as permanent institution of the country. Is the church powerful or the government at this moment. One clearly knows under constitutional democratic system, the orthodox Church would lose its power status, one because of its arachaic belief and second because of lack of enough members to support it. The only reason the Churhc is still acting as if it is powerful is because of the stubborn position of the Ethiopian leaders, Prime minister and his entourage, who still promote the orhtodox Empire as vanguard of their power.

So, don’t misrepresent Ethiopian Muslims , Dagnachew Worku. You write carelessly to down play the Ethiopian Muslim revivalism. This revivalism will not be extinguished easily. It has endured 100 years of slavery under Menelik II. It is about time Muslims rule Ethiopia. And I don’t regret when I say time for Orhtodox to play subjugated role in Ethiopia. Eye for an eye. is what the Bible says. The same with Quran.

I really don’t think that Orthodox deserves any freedom in future Ethiopia. I prefer Protestants be given more freedom at least they are clean from past crimes. However, I warn them not to evangelize Muslims using aid money or force or very aggressively.

Having said that, I have one comment for Jawar: I need some date next time (statistics) on some of your points.

I need evidence on the proportion of pastoralists versus business men in Ethiopian Muslims. If you go to the North yes Most are Businessmen. If you go to the South the majority are Oromo. Oromo people farm as far as I am concerned. Pastorialists are Afar and Somali land. These are arid areas where education is very low because of hostile temperature even to open a small school and teach with out air condition.
Borena there are some uneducated ones too. At any rate the life style of Muslims is not the reason that they were uneducated. Instead, the perception that Islam does not belong added with the fact that the South does not deserve to be educated because he is the servant to the north. I believe the current business owned by Parties have equally marginalized both Muslims and christians although the moevement has some bigger impact among Muslims. The fact that education is being used as an alternative for Muslims I hope should vent some fo their frustrations. Al though I don’t think government discriminated hiring based on religion there may be subltle ways to exclude them. For example, government may not hire Muslims in foreign Emabssies or consulates or the Ministry. A case in point is London embassy is fully dominated by Amhara elites.

At any rate, the basic notion is that Muslim discrimination is well and alive in Ethiopia but in a very subtleway.

I would have like to see some concrete suggestions in order to resolve the Awolia or Islamic revivalism in Ethiopia.

What I hate diaspora christians and Ethiopian christians in general is their close mindedness when some novel issues or ideas are raised. They are one of the most backward and stuborn people on earth. That is why sometimes I think we need to smash your heads by force. Is the the tella that you drinking that makes you so crack head. Why you guys don’t even know how to write in decent English? Do you have to curse every single scholar that the USA has produced as Oromo or that????

Read above what this moron wrote:

“christian Ethiopia” a nick name. This guy must be kept in prison.

I hope to see Jawar to come up with series of writings that go deep into analysis and come up with a relevant working solution for that country.

For example, how viable is Sheria Law under Ethiopian case. Will it promote unity or disunity?

I am sure as you mature the next round of ideas will come from Columbia University not Harvard.

In any Ethiopian discourse I believe ignoring relion as political dimenstion will be fatal. So, some progressives who don’t believe in religious life but are at the same time believers of one or the other religion are putting us in grave danger.

True coptic christians now see the world in two eyes. They see humanity and not beast. They see any mad man in any religion can be terrorists, genocidor, etc.
Believe me moslems get nothing from Arabs. You get every help from radical, extremist right wing foreigners for years. Stop associating Arabs to Islam. Arabs hate non-Arab moslems more than you religion followers. ‘dedeb’ open your eye. You are allergy for Arabs because they abuse your sister.
Another messed up guy (Assta) lists every single events of moslems errors here. Serbians killed more innocent moslems in one even than the whole list he collected from every corner of the world about moslems. Forget about other wars.
For me I see the world in human eye. We all one species. There are bad apples like Hiltler, Osama, Milosovics, name it.
To sum it up only narrow minded fanatics, radicals, extremists mix religion with politics and cause so much hate on earth which leads to the end of humanity.

Does not the Meles people boast they have power to control every east African land? Fear is Not I think why Meles is not speaking up his mind if he believes in it without worrying about losing his own church backers of Amhara or Tigre.

Even diaspora Politicians are Islam haters even though they were treated nicely in Sudan or Somali or Yemen or Egypt. All of them become nervous when it is about Muslims. They act as if they never knew Islam in Ethiopia. They tell us Islam in Ethiopia is different from the rest of the world or Arabs. That is their plot to divide us and to make us think they love us.

So my naive Muslims Ethiopians: if some christian says he loves you that is because:
You act like him.
You drink with him.
You club with him.or her
You wear like him.
You behave like him.

So my naive Ethiopian Muslims: if a christian says he does not like you, then that is because:
You go to Mosque.
You avoid clubing.
You wear Islamic.
You are avoiding chat.

So, tell me if you want to choose to be hated by them or to be loved by them. For me, if one tries to act superior, to act important, to belittle me then I am out.

This is the unfortunate mentality of copts. They teach us: they are educated; they are Kings; they are glorious; and they are somewhat little inventors. These are all garbage accusations false at best.

I urge the Saudi government to intervene in Awolia case and demand govornment explanation for misrepresenting people movement from terrorism. The Saudi government has nothing to do with our cause. Dagnachew Worku, although I support what you predicted about “the fall of Amhara culture” I don’t agree with your depiction of Awolia as terrorism. You are saying the whole of Addis is terrorist plot. If that is the case, so be it.

As of right now, Islam is considered as an NGO institution and its permit expires every three years.
Where as the Church is still under State sanction to enjoy permanent institution status as religion of the country. Is the church powerful or the government at this time? One clearly knows under constitutional democratic system, the orthodox Church would lose its power status, one because of its archaic belief and second because of lack of enough members to support it. The only reason the Churhc is still appearing it is powerful is because of the stubborn position of the Ethiopian leaders, Prime minister and his entourage, who still promote the orthodox Empire as vanguard to their power.Indeed, the prime minsiter has clearly stated to British Guardian that Ethiopia is an orthodox country. British has been a prime force in helping the coptic concept and the Church to a degree that excludes the Muslims. I have never said Prime Minister suggesting Muslim Ethiopia to Arab media. He only mentioned we always enjoy good relations with christians. Indeed, he put the journalist Ezedin to one year term jail for exposing the guardian interview of the Prime Minister.

So, don’t misrepresent Ethiopian Muslims, Guta and Dagnachew Worku. You write carelessly to downplay the Ethiopian Muslims revivalism. This revivalism will not be extinguished easily. It has endured 100 years of slavery under Menelik II. It is about time Muslims rule Ethiopia. And I don’t regret when I say time for Orthodox be subjugated in Ethiopia. Eye for an eye is what the Bible says. The same thing is in Quran.

I really don’t think that Orthodox deserves any freedom in future Ethiopia. I prefer Protestants be given more freedom at least they are clean from past crimes. However, I warn them not to evangelize Muslims using aid money or force or very aggressively.

Having said that, I have one comment for Jawar: I need some data next time (statistics) on some of your points you wrote.

I need evidence for example real impact of pastoralists versus business life style of Ethiopian Muslims. If you go to the North yes Most are Businessmen. And I am not deny the economic power house of Muslims in Ethiopia. But let us not forget until the present business field was not a profession an Amhara looked for and is sometimes connoted in sarcatic way as “mechagna Nekash” or Negadras. Hence, the opportunity for Muslims were kind of bleessin in disguise. Muslim education was not that important because in the Haielselasie system Education was tied deliberately with the church, haha, Abugida.

If you go to the South, hoewever, the majority are Oromo. Oromo people farm as far as I know. Pastorialists are Afar and Somali land. These are arid areas where education is very low because of hostile temperature even to open a small school and teach with out air condition.
Borena there are some uneducated pastorialists too. At any rate, the life style of Muslims is not the prime reason that they were uneducated. Instead, the perception of Islam as not belonging to Ethiopia in the North added with the fact that the South does not deserve to be educated because he is the servant to the north is main reason. In other words, the system was so bad and still is. I believe the current businesses owned by Parties have equally marginalized both Muslims and christians although the moevement has some bigger impact among Muslims. The fact that education is being used as an alternative for Muslims I hope will help vent some fo their frustrations. Although, I don’t think government discriminated hiring based on religion, there may be subltle ways to exclude them in hiring them. For example, government may not hire Muslims in foreign Emabssies or consulates or the Ministry. A case in point is London embassy is fully dominated by Amhara elites.

At any rate, the basic notion is that Muslim discrimination is well and alive in Ethiopia but in a very subtleway. I would have like also to see some concrete suggestions in order to resolve the Awolia stand off or Islamic revivalism in Ethiopia.

What I hate about diaspora christians and Ethiopian christians in general is their close mindedness when some novel issues or ideas are raised. They are one of the most backward and stubborn people on earth. That is why sometimes I think we need to smash your heads by force. Is the the tella that you drinking that makes you so crack head? Why you guys don’t even know how to write in decent English? Do you have to curse every single scholar that the USA has produced as Oromo or that????

Read above what this moron wrote:

“christian Ethiopia” a nick name. This guy must be kept in prison.

I hope to see Jawar to come up with series of writings that go deep into analysis and come up with a relevant working solution for that country.

For example, how viable is Sheria Law under Ethiopian case. Will it promote unity or disunity?

I am sure as you mature the next round of ideas will come from Columbia University not Harvard.

In any Ethiopian discourse, I believe ignoring religion as political dimension will be fatal mistake. So, some progressives who don’t believe in religious life but are at the same time believers of one or the other religion are putting us in grave danger.

Regarding the treatment of religions by Ethiopian successive governments there are some facts and evidences which no one can deny:

Orthodox christinity is given more priveledges than muslims and other christian denominations such as protestants. This is true even under TPLF government.
Evidences for this:
- land owned by orthodox christian in many cities is much much larger than others
- TPLF returned back properties of orthodox church confiscated by the Derg government. But it denied such priveledge to Adventist and protestant christians as well as muslims.

Muslims and other christian denominations should join hand in hand to ask their right for religious freedom in Ethiopia.

You are pathetic limitless liar and as usual backward Muslim.

You are not an Oromo, but a backward Islam which is a cult religion imposed on you or you have sold yourself/soul for oil money to become one of them. You are a Guragee Muslim, amhara or any savage Muslim pretending as Oromo.

Islam teaches you full of lays, backwardness, Killing, destruction. And I can see you are all of these crimes.

Do you thing anyone from you (backward and brainwashed Muslim) expects other than uncivilized approach, hate, limitless lies, destruction and killing? No. You are addicted with and living committing these kind anti human criminal.

You barbaric, the Time to allow you committing crimes and doing nothing is over. For anything bad/barbaric you do against the innocent, you will get back with Interest.

As far as the Three Oromo Ethnic groups namely: 1. Mecha and Tulema, 2. Arsi, negele, and Jiru , 3. Boren huge cultural, traditional, custom and the likes differences, except you stupid, each of them know it very well. They are living with it.

Have you anything to say about the almost 45%-50% division in the Oromo between Christians and Muslim? What do you say about the 29 clan differences within the Oromo?

Somalia has only 5 clans. They have the same tradition, culture and custom. They live in the same area. Yet, look at them.

Do you think with so many and so big differences within Oromo there ever come any unity? No. dream on you barbaric Muslim. You have to face the reality. The reality is totally different than you foolish think off about..

As far as the language concern: speaking the same language doesn’t make you belonging to a specific ethnic or race. The world by large speaks English. But the English speakers worldwide are not English people. Black africans use English language as a national language. Are they Ethnic English or white people? Some children born in Abroad also don’t speak their native language. But not that means they don’t belong to their native group.

But the clan, sub clan, sub-sub clan, religion, tradition, culture and custom differences are the very fundamental issues for belonging. In these regards, the Amharas and Tigres have the same and one.

Gebach, you dedeb and brainwashed Muslim or you a backward Oromo with Galla mentality?

Well well,

I say you are all stupid or Weyane and OLF and Shaebia stooges. The TPLF regime is desperate to create civil war in Ethiopia. That is why it is sending our Ethiopian women and filming it the abuse of our Ethiopian women on international news to cause outrage. What is its motive? To create hatred among Arabs and Muslims vs Ethiopians and christians. So wake up people. TPLF is sending OLF muslim messengers to act now to hold their places for Oromia and Islam in Ethiopia. That is why we are seeing the burning of forests and churches in Ethiopia today. That is why spokesperson Jawar acting like opposition of TPLF but very secretly in the support of TPLF posting such article to incite Islam vs Orthodox christians. TPLF and their outside supporters be it Arabs or the West are desperate to destabilize Ethiopia for the benefit of themselves. For someone who is Oromo, Alem Dechasa, being dragged in Arab countries and possibly being killed, Jawar didn’t right the concern for this woman who died in Arab country and humiliated. It is no OLF who will deman justice for this Ethiopian Oromo beautiful women. It is the mainstrean Ethiopians without saying she is Oromo, Amara, muslim or chiristan. They see her as Ethiopian but the other secondary. For the extremists such as TPLF and OLF, they see her ethnicty and religion. You don’t see on OLF sites the concern and death of Alem dechasa. So what does this tell us? OLF and its members are the same side coin of TPLF. They are driven by power and image once again inciting one against the other. It will be grave mistake to see OLF members such as Jawar and TPLF as different. With the help of outisiders they are slowly carving the civil war to fulfill their dream. What Jawar should have been talkking about right now this minute should have been if he is concerned for Oromos, the burning of the forests and chruches, the death of Alem Dechasa. What is his concern instead? Carving the division slowly through Islam and ethnicity. It is time Ethiopians to really identify who is who. So even as we speak, OLF members such as Jawar is carefully working with TPLF and you better wake up Ethiopians of all religions or ethnicity. Jawar is probably chosen as the middle-man. TPLF and OLF are carefully being trained in such propoganda that there are TPLF and OLF members who seemingly to go along with Etiiopians to only to find out or distract us from the main issue destorying of Ethiopia by tPLF. Take for examply Ethiomedia editor. One should wonder, a former TPLF member, how he became to mesmerise us on news of Ethiopia on his blog. This helps TPLF to market that there are former TPLF members such as Ethiomedia who have the same idea that Ethiopians in general want. This is not so. This editor hates Meles but he still supports TPLF. It is time we Ethiopians to find out the motives of such people such as the editor of Ethiomedia
(who is fully funded and trained to attract many Ethiopians to his site. How is that possible?) and Jawar.

Let us not forget while Jawar is distracting us how “Islam is oppressed” in Ethiopia, Mosques are being doubled in Ethiopia, churches are being burned, Alamoudi is supporting Muslims and sprading Wahabism in Ethiopia, Ethiopia churches accepted Islam while Muslims commited genocide on Ethiopian christians in 1500. Mohammed in the quran is evident enough the true great act of Ethiopian Orthodox to protect his people. Today with the support of Arab-wanna-be Meles and TPLF, Egypt-funded muslims not all are disrespecting Ethiopian ORthdox. The TPLF desperate move for civil war is evident enough also in its spreading rapidly of Evangelism. This has nothing to do with religion differences or ethnic differences, this division is being instigated throught poor nations is to change the geopolitics of these countries to acquire and control their resources. Trust me, the recent killing of christians in Nigeria by Boko Haram, killing of christians in Cameroon is for mere resource acquire of the international globalization which seemingly is anti terrorist (which is not) because globalists are working in harmony with the rich Muslims to achieve the acquiring of resources and weakening of poor nations to control them through their dictators.

@ Gragn House Nigger

NOBODY is nice to you on this thread or any other so I have no clue how you felt people used sweet words towards you here. You hearing voices or what? “You reap what you sow” Islamic clown.

To begin with, you simply don’t appear to be a mentally stable person, it doesn’t matter which angle one tries to analyse your comments! You contradict yourself and lie through your teeth in EVERY LINE of your comments, you delusively believe that you can represent Oromos, Somalis, Afars, Amhara muslims, Southerners etc when in reality, these Muslims would shot your a$$ in a second after reading your satanic trash. Calling you short sighted is massive understatement BLIND crazed BAT.

Second, most importantly, you DO NOT seem to have understood this article or the writer a TINY bit. Jawar and his article are as far apart from your idiotic, fanatic, dogmatic ideologies, crazed, dumb/dull mindset as planet earth and Pluto! He did not include your coo coo crazy sentiments, ill-informed, deluded, insane trashy rhetoric NOT even in a couple of lines because he is neither mentally deranged NOR intellectually challenged chimp like you and he knows what is best for him. That is why he based his analysis on logical & factual accounts of events rather than quote some violent verse out of the Qoran. Tegbaban? In fact, he told you exactly what time it is if you can comprehend properly! His only weakness; lacking in depth analysis “associate all his factors solely to Muslim population", as I’ve already said. He failed to see the inability of those detrimental factors he’d discussed to radicalise Christians & why? If you understand reason why his theory didn’t apply on the opposite side, then, it is pretty easy to recognize EXTERNAL radical elements.

The fatal Error Mr Jawar Mohammed made on this article is:

* As a thinker, he failed to apply, test the same theory on the opposite side and explain why those detrimental factors he outlined above did NOT facilitate towards Christian Radicalization.

* When Christians are being killed, tortured, their business, lands, homes taken away, get imprisoned, tribal politics used against them, their patriarch being used as political soccer ball, when they are discriminated against because of their tribes, when their environments changed beyond recognition, when technology enlightened them, when they’d learned more about global factors affecting their everyday lives etc etc etc, THEY DID NOT RESORT TO BE RADICALS and organized HATE campaigne based on religios basis. That is one FATAL error. Any sane Ethiopian Christian/Muslim can easily differentiate pagan/secular divisive state with religious state.

* The other FATAL error on Jawar’s part was failing to recognise those Arab PIG’s ABSOLUTE ROLE in this global “Islamic crazed radicalism". How can he not address that thoroughly?

That is just about it really, other than that, some exaggeration on % of Muslims, which in fact is way less than 50%, he was pretty much straightforward, well informed. And so, Mr House Nigger Gragn, the only similarities between you and Mr Jawar Mohammed seems to be that you are both male (if one acknowledges a wimp, feminine, pagan liar, Arab & Amhara wannabe cry baby as male that is). You might as well opt for the 3rd GENDER that Australia recently recognized by law, neither male nor female. Ok? :)) If I recall correctly, the last time I squashed your trashy a$$ into your rightful garbage can, you were screaming “you wished Amina or Fatima or whatever her name was there to put me in my place"? :):) coward clown.

In any case, I did briefly went through your lengthy trash of a comment, found it to be 500% false, hypocritical, delusional, non-religious satanic versus, filled with desperation, frustration, anger, jealousy of the sharp, GOD given beautiful minds of Christians, their vision, courage and most of all, your inability to be Amhara or Arab regardless of how hard you try & claim to be Amhara/Arab a$$wipe.

You can hate on Christians all you like but all you accomplished from it is being a psychiatric ward fixture that you really are in Christian land, using Christian languages, living under Christian RULES & scribble gibberish on your outpatient days, only drive yourself even more crazier everyday. Why don’t you relocate to Arabia & Get martyred there, depart to your 752 virgins?

Despite how hard you fake/pretend to limit your hatred to Orthodox Christians, at the end of the day every Christian regardless of what denomination will support every efforts/actions against any MUSLIM radicals be it by Israel, USA, EU, Canada, Ethiopia or whatever Christian country. Whoever is trying eradicate/wipe your radical a$$ from the face of planet earth would get Christian’s unreserved support. That is our stand. Tegbaban? If you try to come closer, inflict the slightest of harm against Orthodox, Amhara or any other orthodox tribes as you fantasize, you will be 6″ under in NO time let alone smash our skulls. Cyber comic. Go try that somewhere else. We ain’t scared of no radical clowns/Arab wannabe PIGS, we never have done! Not now, not ever. Be sensible, live in peace or be radical and slide 6″ under. Simple as.

You and your religion are as clean, as peaceful as your Ahmed Gurey, your prophet Mohammed, both wiped out millions of non believers from the face of the earth … You trying to play people against each other? With that pea brain of yours? LMAO. Please be enlightened that all of the churches that Muslims are burning in Ethiopia belong to Protestants NOT Orthodox.

… Trying to portray Zenawi & Co as Muslim oppressing, Christian loving folks is the most retarded, outlandish claim ever. You can oppose them for being many things but NOT religiously biased. Cyber comic.

Dear Assta B. Gettu,

I took my time & read every bit of your above comment today. I so love, admire the way you dissected every point, exposed most of the bogus claims that I gave no time for to its bare bone! You are telling the truth, radical liars like Gragn need to hear that FACT, NOT some sugar-coated diplomatic words, pretentiousness. Gragn Somali even claims that Muslims had triggered the DERG revolution. I bet he was safeguarding his khat house, liquor store & bric-a-brac while people fought for whatever cause. In any case, you are absolutely right when you say, people like Gragn are born to be liars, sly, wishy washy clowns encouraged by whatever book they are reading, false doctrine that some radicals Muslims distribute in jails, outside of universities, on the streets of the free, democratic world.

While they have NO clue about tolerance, fairness, democracy or separating state & religious laws, they are demanding way too much of it outside of their countries/turf in different parts of the non Muslim world. They would gladly, easily jail, torture, kill Christians for simply worshipping their religion in Arabia, throw their Shari Laws that Christians will never recognize in their lands YET they feel like they are entitled to, deserve special treatment in non Islamic states simply because easy petrol dollar is splashed to corrupt some ignorant secular people, errect their mosques all over the place, use their pertol $ as threat of radicalism should others refuse to comply with their demands.

… Long gone are the days of putting a blind eye to these radicals in the name of secular state. USA, EU, Canada etc are all working closely to implement new laws to restrict, thighten the rops and restrict undeserved freedom to these radicals. They are working on banning their masks, sacks etc, hopefully, implement laws to deport every radical clown to their country of origin regardless of which western passport they carry. They MUST abide by laws of other nations, be stopped from imposing their customs, facial masks etc on others. They expect way too much autonomy, freedom, rights from others, while they make lives hell on earth, unbearable for non Muslims living in their turf. Hypocrites!

Thanks again for that sound response above.

First Amhara pieces needs to learn to be a decent female. She things she can fly on us.

Second, it is important to know the difference between an Amhara and an Ethiopian. No matter how much you say you love Ethiopia it is just a cover for your love of christian Amhara. Clearly, you are not a woman of words or deeds or principles. You are unable to control your anger or frustration and like many old copts you try to paint me as if I represent Islam one day and then the next day you throw me out from Islamic fold and called me a House Nigger. What else can proof your lunaticness other than than this flip flopping. Did you not claim you are no expert in religion nor in its analysis? How can you jump on the band wagon of Assta Getu. What is really sad is West is listening to this garbage and create anti Muslim climate in Ethiopia.

You try to criticize the intelligent person Jawar with your simplistic analysis. It is very sad to hear some these drunk people are posting a comment that is hard to think it is coming from an educated person. Is this what copts learn in school: misinformation, false propoganda, lies and most of all a very blatant accusation against Muslim scholars?

I think you better not compare one person with the other. Jawar has independent mind unlike you who switches sides based on the heat of the day.

Sad, all copts think the same way. In the past, we believed copts are reasonable but the truth is they are not reasonable at all as can be seen from even those liberals who switch sides between night and day.

Don’t even try to push your Amhara agenda in the current movement of Awolia. I ask nazret people not to publish any thing negative about Awolia movement. These are our sons and daughters who were brave enough to demand justice. I know diaspora are far off from Ethiopian reality and are selfish and I hope no body listens to what they say.

In other words, the dominance of the church will end. Especially the orthodox church.

I wish Amhara pieces commented on specifically those points I raised. But as usual she is unable to comprehend what I wrote.

The never-ending war of words, extreme opinions, and polarization of the Ethiopian society, especially on religious matters, will not help our country. As if Ethiopia has no other major problems, we have religious zealots, who try to create religious extremists in their images.

Ethiopia is a country of two major religions, Christianity and Islam, and they are going to live side by side. Period. Let us have this fact into our heads once for ever.

We are not going to see religious wars in Ethiopia in this 21st century. Gragn Ahmed is not going to rise from lowland Ethiopia or Somalia to burn Christian Churches and Emperor Gelawdewos is not going to defend Christianity in Ethiopia for the second time, unless there are some people who have the weird notion that they personify these two people in Ethiopian history, and they see themselves as defenders of Christianity and Islam in Ethiopia.

Religious fanaticism is not going to solve the problems of Ethiopia. Simply it widens the gap between the two communities. Their poverty and the life they live under dictatorship is more than enough. Any rational person should hate religious intolerance wherever it might come from.

Generally very responsibly written and informative piece, but it has purposefully omitted some important facts. I have been waiting for someone to articulate the reasons behind the muslim community’s new found political activism specially in the Arabic school somewhere in Addis that was proudly and cowardly silent when the city was besieged by Woyane’s sharpshooters who were sent by the ballot box robber Meles Zenawi to murder innocent civilians on the street demanding a voice in the political process. As one of the bundled up female student and activist proudly told voa recently, the community is demanding a favor from woyane for keeping quiet in the bloody aftermath of the 2005 election. She said, our protest is not political and it is peaceful…. and her proof for that is the ABSOLUTE absence of Awalia’s students on the streets even when every other student in every other school in Addis somehow involved in the protest demanding justice, democracy and most importantly the secular and all inclusive constitutional right to elect political leaders. Perhaps the school has instructed its community to stay quiet thinking the cause was that of the Ethiopian right wing conservatives, like Jawar thinks, and it is against their interest to the unchallenged spread of the backward arabic culture in the Ethiopian state. Unfortunately for them, in a sudden breach of their symbiotic existence and trust, some five years later, the illegitimate woyane government decided to monitor the subject matter taught in the school which has been so far a center to preach the indivisibility and oneness of Arabic nationality and Islam[a danger to Ethiopianism and Ethiopia; Gragn Ahmed[Visitor] is a living proof for that], and control the spread of radical Islam directly imported from Saudi Arabia. Jawar has repeatedly mentioned the divide between the community as traditionalist and modernist without explaining the basis for the difference. Here I ask who are the traditionalist and modernist? What are their respective teachings? What are their differences? My guess is what Jawar nicely calling modernists or revivalists are the radicals/extremists or Wahabists, and they are the force behind the intolerance and the spread of the archaic and dangerous political islam the Awalia community is trying to enforce within the Ethiopian state. Jawar has stated that

[The] simultaneous evolution of the socioeconomic transformation of the Muslim society and revivalism of their religion has increased their social dynamism, leading some to misconceive or misrepresent the two parallel evolutions as a single phenomenon and call it ‘radicalization’.

The only misconception and misrepresentation i see is your statement. The Saudi Wahabists and other arabic countries have invested millions in the country to build over-sized mosques wherever there are a handful of muslims, and have been preaching the intolerant political islam and arabic nationalism which has resulted in the total destruction of churches and communities especially in the southern part of the country. That is what we are calling radicalization. Other than that, we believe the rights and liberties of the muslim communities in Ethiopia have been violated by the regime on power just like the rest of the communities in the country. We share their grievances. Secular Ethiopia never discriminated its citizens based on their religious affiliation. That is a fact, and there is no reason, not even a single one, for the muslim community to stage a separate and a religious based political activism that necessarily excludes the rest as others unless they have extremist and radical motives.

While the Muslim society has undergone these transformational changes, the state has made little institutional adjustment to accommodate them:

What institutional adjustment are you looking for Mr.Jawar? Should we divide and award political offices and state positions for each religious organizations then ethnic groups instead of based on meritocracy and political electability? Or should we force muslims to take an active participation in the political process of secular Ethiopia? Forget bleeding and dying for the country, by your own admission, the muslim community has been very far from academic institutes and political activities which are important steps to secure any powerful positions within the state. It is no pain no gain. At least you should have some kind of proof that political positions has been awarded to individuals because of their Christianity before demanding a vague ‘institutional adjustment’. As everyone knows, woyane picks its officials based on ethnicity and poltical loyality, not religion. The same was true in the case of Derg, even though the story was different during the monarchy when the state and the church were inseparable, for good reasons.

Furthermore, the unchanging state identity is one of the remaining obstacles that keeps Muslims feeling as if they are strangers in their own home. Despite symbolic equality and greater government tolerance towards religious communities, the identity of the Ethiopian state, both its symbols and composition, remains closely attached to Christianity. To see this one only needs to visit the embassies and ministries.

hmmm, what? The states identity is a mirror image of her makers, her peoples identity and their history. I hope you are not asking us to replace our history with the Arabic history, our Fidel with the Arabic alphabet and add a moon and star on our flag. What Christian symbols and composition have made you feel stranger in your own embassy? Is green yellow red a christian symbol? Even the woyane star was added to “remind the scar and crimes of the neftegna state, who are by the way mostly christians, against the oppressed peoples, nations and nationalities". So, what exactly is Jawar talking about? Instead of asking for ridiculous and foreign adjustments, why don’t you embrace the Ethiopian identity as your own? For instance Ahbash, which you are falsely branding something imported from foreign lands, is Ethiopian. Unlike Wahabism, Ahbash’s origin is Harar Ethiopia! Clearly, the name Ahbash said it all. It is absolutely stupid and ridiculous that the Awalia community that has embraced Wahabism and other pan-Arabist and arabic nationalism in the name of Islam calls Ahbash, an Ethiopian interpretation of the foreign religion Islam, something foreign. Ahbash Ethiopianizes Islam, and that is obviously a threat for the moronic extremists who have embraced Wahabism and Arabism as their own. nufff said

Gragn Ahmed (visitor),
As it has been one of your innate characters to denigrate a person’s name, such as the precious name of our sister, the Amhara Princess, who excels every one of us in her convincing, logical, elegant, and flawless art of writing, you awkwardly asked a moot question: “Do Ethiopian Christians ever care for Muslims?
The correct answer to your invidious question is that, indeed, the Ethiopian Christians do care about any person who lives in Ethiopia, regardless of his color, gender, ethnicity, religion, and political affiliation.
When he had no place to send to his persecuted Muslim followers, the Prophet Muhammad, finally, realized there were Christian people in the Christian kingdom of Ethiopia who really cared for new comers or guests; therefore, he sent them to Ethiopia, and the Ethiopian Christians welcomed them with their open hands. Since then, the Ethiopian Christians have been the guardians of the Ethiopian Muslims, educating them, promoting them to high political offices, and allowing them to worship their Allah freely without forcing them to accept the dominant religion of the land – Christianity.
The generosities of the Ethiopian Christians continue up to this day: For example, the ex-President of Yemen, Mr. Ali Abdullah Saleh, didn’t go to Egypt, didn’t go to Saudi Arabia, didn’t go to Turkey, didn’t go to Iran, to Sudan or to Somalia, but he preferred to come and live in Ethiopia rather than to go to the Arab-Muslim countries. Why did he choose Ethiopia, a Christian country? He chose Ethiopia because he knows the Ethiopian Christians are, by nature, kind and peaceful people who care for every human being on this planet earth.
But today, when these generous Ethiopian Christians see people like you who are influenced and indoctrinated by the Saudi Wahhabists poison their Christian Children, it is their Christian duties to become suspicious of you and may not care about you anymore.
It is your clandestine Jihadist activities that have become your pitfall, and if you continue your close relationship with the Egyptian terrorist Muslim Brotherhoods, as Mr. Jawar’s article suggests that the Ethiopia Muslims have a broader connection with their global Muslim brothers and sisters, the patience of the Ethiopian Christians may not last long. They will hunt you down, catch you, persecute you, jail you or axe you to death. As I have warned you before, I will warn you again to stop your wishful thinking that you will build a Mosque in the Holy city of Axum, that you will institute the Sharia law in the Christian land of Ethiopia, and that, one day, you will render Ethiopia a Muslim land. All these vain dreams are nothing but tantalizing dreams of yours and your Ethiopian Muslim friends’.
You claim the Axum history is a legend, and, at the same time, you confess there was a Muslim king in Axum, and that is for sure a legend because Ethiopians have had no Muslim king in their amazing ancient Christian history and the modern one.

You have told the truth for the first time when you sincerely assert: “The fact is every Ethiopian Christian does not want to see Islam to come to power.” And I am one of those Ethiopian Christians who vehemently oppose the ascendancy of a Muslim power in the Christian kingdom of Ethiopia. At the time when we are witnessing the Muslim power is crumbling, the Sharia law is being rejected all over the world, the violence of Muslims is increasing at an alarming rate, and justice for the minority Christians is being denied by greedy and immoral Arab-Muslim leaders, who does, in his right mind, want to allow a Muslim kingdom to rule the Christian land of Ethiopia and the fake religion – Islam- to be the religion of that kingdom?
Gragn Ahmed, when you have nowhere else to go to get someone to help you and put you in power, you mad an urgent call to a foreign power. You said: “I urge the Saudi government to intervene in Awolia cases….” Your great, great, great grandfather, Gragn Muhammad invited the Turkish Islamist government to intervene in his hopeless battle against the courageous Ethiopian Christians. Yes, the Turks came to help him, but they were routed out by my Ethiopian ancestors – the Ethiopian Christians. You are simply a useless Ethiopian Muslim who may not need the attention of the Amhara Princess.

The initiation of Jawar to discuss one of the core issue in Ethiopia, in whatever way it is interpreted, is timely and very encouraging. The article focused on the current crisis of muslims and gives enlightening insights about muslims. One should understand that it is very difficult to address all the underlining issues in one small article but it is a beginning for all stakeholders to participate in a professional manner to understand the problems and work for solutions.

From the comments one can easily understand that the subject is very complex and delicate as it is a social issue that affects all who reside in Ethiopia. As the intent of Jawar’s article is to encourage discussions and work together.

In the meantime, I would like to ask my friend Assta B. Gettu to answer the following, if he is willing to do so:-

1) Who are Ethiopians?

2) What criteria one has to fulfill to be Ethiopian?

3) Are there Oromo/ Afar/Somali/Amhara/Tigre etc… exist in Ethiopia or not?

4) What are the religions of Oromo/ Afar/Somali/Amhara/Tigre etc…?

Nazret, your site is wonderful. It has opened an excellent discussion on the future problem of Ethiopia. Ethiopians of the two religions will iron out their differences and hopefully arrive to understanding in the future. Johar has done an excellent analysis. He delves into an area where others are afraid or have no idea about.

Gragn Ahmed

One can be judged by what he says and indeed we have a christian terrorist who is maquarading under the guise of Ethiopia to promote the very nature of evil as prescribed in Paul’s Bible to kill every one who does not obey the Bible of Paul.

Indeed for ceturies Ethiopian Muslims have been mentality victimized by the so called “Land of guests mentality” that Ethiopia gave a host to Islam. Indeed, we have to be convinced that the Christian land of Axum had such a pious leader and Abaraha Atsebeha who invaded mecca before him and who left the land of Arabia in disgrace was the land of the pious. The Prophet, s.a.w. out of all places chose Ethiopia because of his love, admiration and the courageousness of Abraha Atsebeha who despite invading Meccca showed some level of witiness to then grand father of our Porphet.

Indeed, Islam and Ethiopia are inseparable. When you claimed Ethiopia is christian we equally claim that Islam deserved equal place in Ethiopian history. Tell me which Prophet in the Bible talked about the good nature, the justness and fairness of its people other than Prophet Mohammed. Did not the Prophet ask the King Negash to embrace Islam in one of his letters? Did not the King played the role of guardian and completed the marriage act between the Prophet and one of the female immigrants to Ethiopia upon sudden death of her husband?

What kind of evidence can we bring to show the closeness of the people of Mecca and Axum? How very encouraging and cordial relationship it was. So, my question is who made it toxic afterwards? The answer comes easily the Ethiopian orthodox priests who refused even to convert and write any history of conversion of the King in their fetha Negest. This was indeed the beginning of the end of golden days of the relationship between the Church and Islam in Ethiopia. Then began massive exclusion and mischaraterization of the religion Islam in a big way. To this day that campaign remains unabated. It is going as well as it could during the regime of Meles.

Some ignorant people tell us why there are big Mosques, but never ask themselves why there are even churchs in purely Islamic areas of Harar or Afar. Whereas the Axumite Muslims are treated as simply guests and are not worthy of a small mosque. Are you guys thinking these people want the Ethiopian people to be prosperous and happy?? No. They simply want us to remain invisible and docile and coward.

If we disagree with them they think we are radicals. I always said these people understand no one when it comes to the Church. They simply think Islam should never be our official religion. Thank Allah these people are now in the minority.

It is always true that there is always tension when things Change but the current tension between Islam and orthodox Church is something that is expected. But we know by systematically excluding Muslims from education and Military Haileselasie paved the road for supermacy of the Orthodox elites.
Some Moron by the name of “fetawrari” like his name wants to preach us that the Muslims to come to power it must be through education. And he squarely tries to blame Muslims for not taking the education road. Is he denying that the Halieselasie generation Muslims were asked to pray for his highness and pray “Abune zemene menfes kidus the hadu amlak, besemay eyemtenor getachen” hoey.. bla bla is an intentional deterence against Muslims.

Was it not true that the people of Ethiopian Muslims have been asked to convert or change names to be police officers or soldiers? Indeed, Ethiopian Kingdom preached “haymanot yegel naw ager yegara naw” which meant only the Church and State were married and were able to conceive and give birth to many fanatic fitawraris that dessimated the young boys of Oromo Muslims or Somalis or some what the Afars.

Are you guys telling me there was no systematic assimilation that keeps only the dominant power of the Church to this day? Is this what you telling us is the true Ethiopianess.

Why should Saudi be the target when it is the source of original Islam to Ethiopia. According to fitawrari there is a Wahabi which is foreign to Islam. But I want to warn him that the Islam we know from Saudi Arabia is the same Islam that came to Ethiopia the first time until it was diluted by paganic practices of the native people and some orthox practices as well like celebrating Saints.

If Ah bash is Ethiopia who can tell me where Orthodox is from? Is Orthodox really Ethiopian? It never originated in Ethiopia. Is Pente Ethiopian? What is fitawrari is blubering about? This is no more than stereotyping. This is clearly a sing of mischaractering Islam as foreign while favoring Pentes who are alein to Ethiopian culture. Indeed, one of the big obstacles to Muslim life improvement is this pure assassination of Islamic organizations as foreign elements. It is not hard to find out why. Ethiopian copts prefer pentes over the age old Islam. But the solution is in our hands. Should we expect a reasonable mind of copts to work in cooperation with us or should we stand up for our right and take the heat and let them call us names and be victorious in peaceful stand or if necessary through force? The choice is clear. Copts never let you take choices. So Ethiopian Muslims have to over come the fate of Lij Eyasu despite his nobelity and his brilliance fell victim to the Shewan Priests and copts plot to label him as Muslim fanatic.

Are the Awolia people aware of this? Despite the Ethiopianess of Lij Eyasu he fell victim to Haleselasie. Copts should not be underestimated. They have a power to come back and attack you even though their number is small. The take coptic church is symbol of Ethiopia. Fetawrari seems to deny that all Ethiopian Embassies are full of Meskel and paintings of the Church even in Meles’ regime. Before our eyes Washington DC Embassy had to remove some of its offensive displayed items in the lobby only to return it after Muslim protestors went home. This shows lack of change of heart among copts whatsoever. They never respect the law but expect Muslim to follow it.

Every where in Ethiopia even in the immigration office there is big portrait of jesus. What does this symbol stand for? Meles never believes in it, but he is happy to se it instead of Quran on the walls? Why is Ethiopia calling every street Paul or every Hospital Saint Mary. If you think we are dead bodies you are right. I pray that the revolution of North will reach the mountains of Addis Ababa soon. It is simply unacceptable to live in a surrounding that smells Orthodox, tastes Orthodox, looks Orthodox and feels like Orthodox. We have covered our eyes as if we were blind. Freedom is sweet. Don’t tell us you shintam Fitawrari education comes with pain. We Ethiopian Muslims so much pain let alone for education. ” Leneat lij Meet Astemarech” endilu, you are over stepping when you accuse us of free access to ecucation. You seem to be oblivion to the impact of implicit disriminatory practices of the Haleselasie. If Ethiopian Muslims are to be accused of being non Ethiopian then what will be said of the orthodox church that used to improt its papa from Egypt and Indeed an Arab copt use to be our spiritual leader? What does mean for Ethiopian Muslims? Indeed, every Ethiopian Muslim can equally accuse copts of conspiracy against their own countries.

The only thing that can be said in certainty is we humans are forced to adjust not only simply the changed environment in time but the change it self. The change that time offers could not be/impossible to manage it can not be held back it can not be pushed, it cannot be shifted sideways or turned upside down it is we as individual/society that can adjust and manage ourselves depending on our sovereign individual choice. So when my honorable Assta B.Gettu suggested that” Islam it self has to amend” I think he is talking about these powerful force he is right the globalized word now demanding a quick integration of societies. Islam in general is not reviving itself, it is challenging modernity. Socially segmented traditionally decentralized Islam that lived in isolated geographical space is resisting change; it considers modernity pernicious to their social norm, implicit social rules, family structure and language. Now supported by excessive academic mind with out digesting and revisiting the record of past Islamic historical records we are told Islam is reviving. Please it is time piteous appeal of Islam should revisit the “Young Turks “movement’s manifesto that brought modern Turkey. In their challenge to the Caliphate record of Islamic rules, they won their argument by pointing out this weakness of Islamic Caliphate system.
Islamic rules are Parochial rather than cosmopolitan.
It is violent rather than loving.
Zealous rather than rationalist.
Ethnocentric rather than universalizing.
Proselytizing rather than ecumenical.
Islam is more sectarian rather than Deistic
It is fractious and pulverizing never integrating. Thanks.

Dearest Amhara Princess (visitor),

I admire you and always cherish your persuasive and inspiring comments on this web site; even though the wicked Gragn Ahmed worked hard to dissuade you from educating your readers all over the world, you have proved to him again and again you are the true Amhara princess and the queen of wisdom, intelligence, patience, and amazing gift of mastering the English language that has crippled Gragn Ahmed in expressing himself in that lovely and universally spoken language.

Gragn Ahmed knows neither the Amharic nor the English language: he is master of tautology, and instead of learning from you how to write in English, he has preferred to disparage you, which is impossible to do so because everybody knows you are a highly educated, charming, and hard-working Ethiopian girl. It is a great blessing to have you on this web site, and it would be a double blessing to always hear your voice and to see you face.

When Gragn Ahmed insults you, don’t blame him because he is simply following Muhammad’s teaching that commands all Muslim men should not respect or treat their women as equal with men, and no one asks a Muslim man as why he insults or beats his women. However, since Gragn Ahmed claims he is an Ethiopian Muslim, he must follow the low of the Christian land of Ethiopia: he should not insult a Christian woman, and at that an educated woman such as the Amhara Princess.

How dare you, Gragn Ahmed, raise your rough voice and insult the Amhara Princess, who can easily disqualify you to even wash the feet of one of her servants! It has now become your daily bread to insult the Amhara Princess, to denounce the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church, to demote the Amharic language and replace it with an Arabic language, to disrespect the Ethiopian Christian kings, and to completely annihilate the Ethiopian Christian Kingdom. Your cursing words may, some times, destroy you instead of destroying the Ethiopian Christian kingdom, especially the peerless Amhara Princess.

Dearest Amhara Princess, thank you for taking your precious time to read my lengthy comment on Mr. Jawar’s article. To my understanding of the article, Jawar is inciting the Ethiopian Muslims to rise up to overthrow the Ethiopian Christian government and encouraging them it is their right to demand the government to give the Ethiopian Muslims special treatment; however, I do not understand why Ethiopian Muslims need preferential treatment: they are not small children that they need special care from us the Christians. When are they going to grow up, to put their houses in order, and to completely submit themselves to the Christian kingdom and to the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church? I am sure the hamartia of their prophet Muhammad the false prophet is killing them. If they want to live in peace with the Ethiopian Christians, they must first neaten their Quran, which is the source of all kinds of conflicts.

Thank you, my dearest sister, for standing up against the visible and the invisible enemies of the Ethiopian Christendom!

Lets make few things clear here:

Flip flop? Moi? Oh ouais? Jamais! Pas la Princesse d’Amhara :):)

Don’t mistake me with your many other flip flop user names here like Qorqoro, Reality, Seattle etc?

* I’ve never, ever considered mentally deranged man like you as Muslim representative. One has to be super retarded like yourself to believe you represent anybody! Try and represent yourself first eh? Know yourself, understand what you are writing, know your FACTS, check your sanity. You appear to be a fake, plastic wannabe Muslim, religious zealous! You don’t even know the first thing about religion, so how can one consider you as representative of anyone let alone religion?

* I am never about religion, don’t care what religion people believe in, how, where and when they practice it. As long as you respect other’s religions, don’t push your agenda towards me & not fabricating lies, instigating violence, demonizing my religion, people, history etc, you can stay in your rightful shack/gutter & dream about violence all you like. It is your Hypocrisy, double standard, fallacies, hatred, violence, delusionalism that I am responding to. I am extremely reasonable with reasonable folks but a living nightmare to radicals like you. Other than that, I have NO CLUE what Abash is or what your Awolia movement is all about. I have NO time for it. If the Awoliya or whatever movement are Arab wannabe radicals, who try to impose Saudi style of nonsense then they MUST be stopped at any cost! If they are peaceful Ethiopians demanding & struggling for justice, freedom, democratic rights just like their Christian counterparts, then, they have my support. Tegbaban?

As for Mr Jawar Mohammed, he is open to criticism even if he is chief rocket scientist of NASA. Just because he is Muslim, he is not immune form scrutiny. Every article here or on CNN or wherever gets scrutnized by readers. Jawar seems to be totally let off by the 96% Orthodox TPLF cadres for some strange reason? Dumb cadres who spit trash on every opposition article are visibly absent from this thread. E’rm, I wonder why that is the case when Jawar appears to be trampling upon their government? Could it be because they were pre-warned that he is one of them disguised as opposition? God knows, you have to consider every possibility.

Nonetheless, I believe his analysis is quite simplistic, somewhat short sighted and lacked to sight TOP detrimental factors facilitating towards global or national MUSLIM activism/radicalization. I gave you my reasons for saying so. Prove me wrong or hush the hell up. Rather than calling me by your regular client’s name … ;)

Finally, please understand your own words of wisdom “One can be judged by what he says” Do you understand what that means? And how that can easily be applied to your madness? :)):))

I suggest you reread every pile of trash you dump in Nazret.com. “Judging by what you say” here, I concluded that the safest place for you at this particular moment & time is the good Ol’ mental institution.

Please nazret allow us to defend our religion peacefully from mad people on this web though it’s madness to try engage with people out of touch.

ABC-HUHU;
For God sake do not compare Assta & Co. the Islamophobics with logical Gragn who is happened to be from north and with the religion they envy.

Gragn wrote above the misery endured by the Ethiopians (moslems) for thousand and quarter year in the north and also a century in the rest of the country after invaded with the help of the west.

Assta & his company support the continuation of this misery and humiliation by coptic followers because the moslems failed to believe in their confused religion.

I’ve neve seen a country in the world with haters like Assta. This country is a mother for some tribe, a step-mother for others and enemy for moslems.

I tried many times here to educate the haters/liers, ignorant about unity via respect, love, and mutual understanding thereby forward our country to prospority but invain. Islamophobics insult our religion and our prophet in many ugly way. All these out of envy and fear that one day the majority will wake up and separte from them as Eritrea did. Imagine how much freedom Eritreans have now. In the old days including myself we used to call them ‘ambeta’ and mean spirited attack on them. Now they breath fresh air. It doesn’t matter if they don’t have river or resources. Freedom is bigger than everything.

Well time will come for us too and we will never be subjugated, humiliated and insulted by this 3000 years back ward people. We ask them to change as the world changed. Super power South African White relinquished the power to the native blacks. Same of Soviet Union, Balkans, etc. What happened to this stone age people in Ethiopia. They don’t want share the power until we take back our land like South Sudanese and others did.

Islam embraced volunterly by Actors/actoress, pliticians, rabais, priests, name it throught the world. This is fact.
Ethiopian coptics talk about the religion exported to them by Egyptian/Syrian business men Arabs and not by prophet. They stuck with this and never thing about other things. The writer expressed something else and the coptics want the same situation to continue while the world changed. This shows their real picture that they hate to live with us but to rule and humiliate us.

Remember there are many religions in the world and not Islam and coptic. Killing takes place in every parts of the world every minutes because we are human beings. Imagine in Mexico 50,000 Mexicans lost their life to Mexican drug lords. Is this religion related? May be according to Assta & his co and his newly recruits Amhara prince, free, etc.

If this poinsous hate continues Ethiopian map will change further for sure to Axum map may be plus Gonder and Gojjam . You will live in the ‘gedam’ fasting around the year without being productive. Praise, praise your religion. Oh no insult Islam then you elvate your religion. Do not equate your religion with the western ones. They are different from you. They are secular. Only very minute minority think like you and they polarize the life of few.

By the way all prophets do unique things in their life!!!!!! Don’t be silly and ignorant by what prophet Mohammed did because you do not see with the eye of the prophet. They do miracles but for you it’s madness, rape, etc.

What would you call prophet Solomon who f.. 300 slave wives. What is the answer for f..ing queen Saba without marriage. He f’d a lot of women. What kind of insult you paste on this unique prophet? Tell me. Nothing? Why?
Don’t you know he is a moslem. Islam has no color, race, or boundry. Islam means believe in one
God like the Angil, Tora and Koran put it. Don’t get confused because of your confused religion mixed with culture, pagans and two other religion. That’s why your hate is beyond imagination. Made a research on yourself first before…

Well enough for today. Adios

Forgot to mention one thing. I watched Levin Video on Ethiomedia and one thing struck me what he stated. He said there is mentality of Tigres and Amharas that they don’t want to change. Look At Meles he just acts and functions like his ancesctors ruling people in the same way as they did. Same with Amharas. This bad for the country he said. I hope I quoted him right.
It’s hard for you guys to share the power with other significant Ethiopians because of this rigid mentality and radical religion.

Mr. ABC-HAHU (visitor),
For some unknown reasons, you have been absent for a long time since I discussed some interesting issues with you on the Ethiopian Review. I am glad you are back now, perhaps, with a new spirit, new thought, and a variety of essential points useful for our country.
It seems you are asking me to answer your four questions you have listed on this web site:
1. Who are Ethiopians
2. What criteria one has to fulfill to be Ethiopian?
3. Are there Oromo/Afar/Somali/Amhara/Tigre etc…exist in Ethiopia or not?
4. What are the religions of Oromo/Afar/Somali/Amhara/Tigre etc…?
These are your tricky questions you want me to answer, and I am certain you know the answers for your questions.
1. All Ethiopians who are born in Ethiopia and those who are given the Ethiopian citizenship are Ethiopians.
2. One has to be born in Ethiopia or must have Ethiopian citizenship (question 1 and 2 are the same)
3. Ethiopia is blessed in having various groups of people such as the Amharas, the Tegaru, the Oromos, the afars, the Somali, and many other tribes.
4. Every person in Ethiopia is free to have his/her own belief. He/she can be a Christian, a pagan, an atheist, a Jewish, a Muslim or something else; however, I personally want every Ethiopian to be like me – a Christian, but that is his or her own choice.
Dear ABC-HAHU, if you have different views from what I have briefly stated, I would like to hear them.

Amhara arrogance at its peak i see. you Living In fairytales again who said it is Ordered on Muslims to protect Ethiopian Orthodox Christians? The sahaba clearly Migrated to Today Eritrea City of Debarwa under the Bahr Negus Ashrem Abher, you can confirm this information with the Debarwa Chruch, Sahaba Narration Including the Prophet of islam Daughter where she is Buried In debarwa and other Historic evidence. The Ethiopian Christians wanted to Capture The sahaba Under their King Estifanos But Failed at the mereb battle.

Gragn burned Northern Ethiopia to the ground while Refused to Cross the mereb North claiming that The Midri Bahri King was a friend of Islam, Don’t you think he Knew that Debarwa which was the capital of Eritrea at that time was also the Land where The prophet of islam prohibited attacking unless you are defending?? You ethiopian are living In LALA land, you believe in Ethiopia been the first Migration while there is No evidence or proof of any Muslim In North Ethiopia prior to the defeat of Gragn. Look at the sahaba Mosque Build In Eritrea Dedicated to the Migration, Look at the Debarwa Mosque where it lays on top of where the first sahaba took shelter upon arriving In Midri bahri, Look at your Brothers and sisters In arab countries Treated like animals do you think The arabs don’t Know where the sahaba went?? Don’t you Ethiopians Read or listen to arabs saying that the sahaba went to Eritrea not ethiopia??? Ethiopian Christians went to war with King ashrem to harm the sahaba and sell them Back to the arab pagans of qoreysh for that Arabs Today would never Forget that that is why they treat Ethiopians like Dogs. I just don’t Know If the amhara Christians are arrogant or Dumb you have been mistreating Muslims In ethiopia for long if you want to use your past deeds then it should be Every Muslim In the horn slitting Your throats for having the nerve to attack The sahaba for few Gold and silver coins, But we all know how you deal with such pressure Committ suicide as usual The coward amhara habesh way out.

To Mr jawar Mohammed it is about time for Ethiopians Muslims to stand up and Raise Their voices, Enough is enough These Amhara are only concerned to be relevant and would do anything to stay that way, Today they would talk sh*t about Ethiopian Muslims but once there is a war or conflict where Most of the ethiopian army Ifantry are muslims they would Use the same old “we are ethiopians Brothers muslims and christians Blah blah blah” That is what they good for sweet talk with a heart and intention of darkness towards Muslims. Mr jawar Don’t Hold back as i can see you doing so The hell with these Orthodox Clowns speak your Mind and speak on behalf of your Ethiopian Muslim Brothers and sisters if they won’t be concerned about your Feelings, well beings why the hell should you.

Ciao.

PS This post probarly Won’t make it pass the racist Amhara Firewall set up For this website and if it did which i will be suprised Its Semhar and i tell it how i see it.
