Who now keeps the peace between Eritrea and Ethiopia?

By Mulugeta Alemu

22 February 2008

Eritrea’s blatant restrictions on the United Nations Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE) not only imperilled the mandate and operation of the force, but has also put the security of the peacekeepers, in the words of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, in grave danger. The fuel embargo imposed by the Eritrean government has crippled UNMEE’s operation. UN troops have now run out of ration and other supplies.

The crisis should not come as surprise. Eritrea’s latest aggressive posturing is just the most recent one in a series of its unlawful measures which it had been taking as far back as 2005. These measures which effectively excluded UNMEE from undertaking certain reconnaissance flight and patrol were so pervasive that they had already mortally diminished the significance of UNMEE’s mandate. UNMEE had simply failed to implement its mandated under the 2000 peace accord between the two countries. The response of the UN to the crisis was painfully timid.

There are few precedents to UN’s humiliation in Eritrea. Many of its peacekeeping missions marred in scandal and being unable to solve protracted conflicts in other parts of the globe, the world body unsuccessfully tried to market its forces stationed in the Horn of Africa as one of its most successful missions. But it is in Eritrea that the most challenging resistance to UN peace keeping mission is unravelled. When the UN is struggling to be a relevant institution in averting genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes, the stakes are high in failing in traditional peacekeeping missions.

Despite the enormous commitment the world community has displayed in sustaining an expensive peacekeeping mission in this part of the world, few attribute the lull in fighting between Eritrea and Ethiopia to UNMEE. This is particularly important given the fact that the force has, for a considerable period of time now, is not doing what it is expected to do─keeping peace. The troops were not freely patrolling the long border and most of their previous check-points are already been disband.

The crisis between the UN and Eritrea has now reached its natural peak. Eritrea has just exhumed its last remaining bargaining chip against the UN. Its approach has been patently unwise, bullish and counter-productive. An angered Security Council, in its emergency meeting held to deliberate upon Eritrea’s mistreatment of its peace troops, openly condemned Eritrea’s action and threatened to take ‘appropriate action’ against Eritrea. But many including (most importantly) the Eritrean government know too well that this is not the first time the Council threatened action which it later failed to implement. It is unlikely that the Security Council will take any specific measure or sanction against Eritrea. Even if it was to take such steps, it is far less likely that such course of action will encourage or force the Eritrean government to change its course.

The international community in general and the UN in particular now should address the Ethiopia-Eritrea dispute in a manner which ensures lasting peace between the two countries. Now both the boundary commission and UNMEE, which have never seriously influenced developments on the ground, are in serious jeopardy leaving the two parties where they have always been. Ethiopia and Eritrea can only be the genuine peacekeepers and dialogue is the only reasonable course of action. By showing an outrageously fierce rigidity to the implementation of the border ruling and by violating the operation of UNMEE, Eritrea has unwillingly pushed itself into a route which finally brings it to face dialogue as solution. Isn’t that what Eritrea has rejected from the beginning? Well statecraft and good diplomacy requires that Eritrea is not reminded of that fact.

BeAl Bekele, beAl Getachew, aleKum kemA ilkum?

Bekele the fool: who said UNMEE was an international mission? Ethiopia? WE know this mission was used to spy for Woyane Ethiopia. After the border was virtually demarcated, following the failure of implimenting it by Ethiopia and failing to have it implemented by UN, what business does it have in Eritrea’s soli. You think Temporary zone is Kasmere or Golan Heights or Sierra lion, where corrupted UN (US Corporation) is triving? Eritrea is the land of Human Lions and Human Tigers, who prved “Yes we Can” attitude and prove it against the will of inept and impotent tool, UN, for independence. Eritrea is not a country of the sixtees that was handed liberty from colonial masters.

If you fools and still “adgi” chauvenists believe that Shaebia will be overthrown because it rejected UN, I would call it dinKurna, ignorance that is still haunting Ethiopian chauvenistis towards disintegration of their land. Shaebia, as its name refers it, is the popular organization built out of defiance of the whole society for identity. It was born out of defiance and it will be thriving out of defiance, as long as injustice against Eritreans continue.

UNMEE is a byproduct of the conflict between Woyane and the people of Eritrea, created to keep the interest of both sides, in the spectrum of neutrality, with the blessing of both parties. If it loses it neutrality and continues the interest of Ethiopia and its handlers, out of mandate. Eritrea has all the legitimate right to reject its presence, IN ERITREAN SOIL. And this is inferiority complex but, identity. We WILL NEVER COMPROMIZE on our identity and sovereignity for Western handouts or welfare. Eritrea is not Ethiopia where its government authority is bartered for corruption.

One more thing though. Did you mean Tigrayan inferiority complex that brought this war and which caused Ethiopian and Eritrean innocent people’s life time savings looting? Check with your spelling.

As far as Eritreans, “We will never ask what doesn’t belong to us but never relinquish what is righteously ours.”

Good Luck with your “Victory!”

I am not sure what you people are fighting about. It just doesn’t make sense. Weather you are Eritrean or Ethiopian you still have one blood. When it is all said and done you both will come to one solution if not then somebody has to go. I know for fact that one is more powerful or dangerous than the other and it is well known who that is. If one doesn’t believe in peace then by no means power should be used to solve the situation. I just hope for the sake of innocent people the situation should be solved peacefully.

As usual the Emmiee Ethiopia Barking Dogs..EEBD..get their adrenaline rush whenever the name Eritrea is mentioned.UNMEE’s mission though honrable on the surface,is a tool of the American foriegn policy adventure. It sole mission is to protect the imminent downfall of the Woyannes. The Eritrean government heard ad nauseum from the Americans and EU that the Woyannes are very weak and are in a precarious position. There is a strong opposition force in Ethiopia and the Woyanne leadership is fractured. But,on the contrary the the Eritrean leadership is united and has 100% support of its people.
As usual the message was for Eritrea to give grounds and be patient otherwise the Woyanne house of cards will crumble.
The West tried every trick in the book to blackmail and demonize Eritrea to no avail. In fact the young nation is teaching the powers to be that the old way of doing things is over.Their shame is exposed for all to see.
The Eritrean can do spirit and sense of justice is up and kicking. No amount of conspiracy, blackmail, sabotage and demonization can dampen the Eritrean spirt of defiance.
The fundamental principles of the Eritrean revolutionary struggle then and now are the rule of law and social justice.

The UN ruled. That is where the issue is. Meles should never have called the UN, He did. He lost. The shabia idiot is frustrated becaus he is a big IDIOT.
Ethiopia must hand over Bademe to her province. If the UN is to be respected its ruling must first be respected. The IDIOT has every right to kick the UN out because it is not resolving the issue for him. Now, there is blame here and where to put it is very clear in my view. If that is okay with the likes of Uzawa, I would like to state my opinion on it.
It is simple. It is just one man. Meles Zenawi. The crooked woyane who sold Ethiopia out.

All you woyanes here now can go right ahead and cry wolf for that is what it exactly is. A cry wolf.

I see no reaon to blame Esayas on this when it is meles who went global and asked for all nations to recognize the province as an independant state. It was meles who allowed shbaia to do as it may with our coffee. It was woyane who allowed shabia to cause such destruction and invade our territories. Needless to mention lives lost over an issue Meles decided to continue as no peace no war. It is not Esayas but Meles who is responsible for the Eritrean situation, from independance to Bademe and the unsettled future. No one but Meles is to Blame. No one but Meles and his crooked TPLF/Woyanes should face justice for their trecherious acts on the Ethiopian people.

That is where the truth is in my view.

There is no need of the international community to get involved on this issue. Hell to the peace-keeping forces and HELL to Eritreans…what we need is a good leader in Ethiopia with some balls to get rid of sheabia and secure Ethiopian’s interest and national security.

We have the ability and power to get rid of the blood sucker cockroaches in SAWA and ASMARA, and return our land/port back. There is no need to mark a border because there was never one before and there won’t be one now/later… I am sick and tried of these types of cheap propagandas by some of you losers out there who are pretenders. We cannot keep cutting Ethiopia into pieces like birthday cakes…

“Balance of terror” guaranteed peace during the cold war. We can not apply the same method for the conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea. May be continuation of the no war and no peace situation might bring the war mongers in Asmara to their senses, unfortunately at the expense of the ordinary people of Eritrea. Let’s always draw a line between the ordinary citizens of Eritrea and the petty Chauvinists that impregnated the people with hate towards their Ethiopian brothers and sisters for the sake money, power and a piece of land they can call their own, which they can exploit, rape and terrorize without giving explanation to any body what so ever. The ordinary citizens of all countries are cosmopolitan by nature. Chauvinism, nationalism, narrow ethnic feelings are the disease of the so called elites, which grow on the back of the citizens of a country as parasites and suck its blood until the victim is either paralyzed, becomes incompetent, inactive and impassive to injustice.
War between Ethiopia and Eritrea can be avoided and peace could come
• If there is a patriotic, determined and yet peace loving government in Ethiopia,
• if we acquire a strong and effective armed forces ready to defend our boarders,
• if we send a clear and unequivocal message to the dictator and his cronies in Asmara that the next war will be the last war between Ethiopia and Eritrea, as said by our own dictator, who unfortunately is always ready to betray our country in times of real danger
• if regime change comes both in Ethiopia and Eritrea
• If the Eritrean government is forced to understand that it can not continue to destabilize Ethiopia and dream for a weak and a fragmented country, in order to fulfill its hegemonic dreams, because as time passes Ethiopians are more united as never before, and finally
• if Eritreans open their eyes, minds and hearts and come to appreciate that the only way forward is cooperation, good neighborliness and peace founded on equality and justice.

As long as the existing rulers of Eritrea in power the existance of the un peace keepers is only postpond the war from now to the day they leave from eritrea. As isayas told the world in his famous pre reharsed interview that he used all his 16 years power to liberate the different ethnic groups of Ethiopia. From his interview one can learn he more engaged in the oppressed Ethiopians than the one he was supposed to lead. He want to liberate afar in Ethiopia but has forgotten the afar who live in eritrea.

So as long as shabia is in power we keep the peace not un. The un is only a shelter for shabia to heal the and gother the wounded and disperssed of his loosers militaries.

Victory for Ethiopia.

I found this horrible message in Eritrean web page. Se the quotation:

‘The Ethiopian refugees were trying to escape from the hell they are trapped-in and from the torture and sufferings by claiming to the Libyan officials they too are Eritreans; -but, sadly, the Eritrean coordinators exposed them as Ethiopians and badly ruined their chance to see the sun shine after a year. As the result of it, they are still in prison hell under tremendous harsh beatings and hunger.’

1) I prefer to die than i say i am from eritrea.

2) ‘Send the shabians home!’: the slogan of me is always true.

Send those who live in Shimbal to isaias. He is their medicine.

Love to all Ethiopians. Death to all traitors who work with shabians.

Dear readers,

Both tyrant comrades in arms playing billiard (Kerembola) games with the miserable poor people of both countries in the name of freedom, sovergnity etc.

Where is the freedom? Where is the fruit of freedom? Nowhere to be seen. Nothing to show for the hundreds of thousands of martyrs sacrificed their life for their devilish cause. Unbelievable. The imperial regime and Derg were long gone and that cannot be used as an excuse any more.

To me Esaias and Melese are mercenary banadas. Both leaders are proven to be racist, tyrant murderers they both are incompetent, corrupt, visionless and they passed their use by date long time ago and must be thrown out of power sooner than later.

“Kebet kalewalebet kubet lekema”. What do we really expect from such individuals? What is their work experience? I will tell you the answer, mischievous canning mafioso, gorilla killers. So to me their daily preoccupation is how to cling on to power at any cost than changing the lives of their people.

One of their diversionary political tactics which is being used many times over is unfortunately creating war, as the public demand for freedom gathers momentum the border issue surfaces to the top in both countries. Have anyone noticed this trend?
Dear all please be aware of what is going; these two mafioso murderers playing war games with their fellow human beings simply to cling on power. Friends please don’t be the human fuel to sustain this deliberately lit fire. Don’t join this mad dogs Melese and Esaias enough is enough. Let both of them go to hell instead.

Dear Eritrean and Ethiopian brothers and sisters please let’s wake up together. If the majority of the Eritrean people choose to be independent I respect the will of the people and that is not my objective here. However, I remind everyone to focus our attention and struggle for peace and genuine democracy. The will of the people must prevail in both countries first. When the dust settles I think we will need each other mainly for economic reasons, whether as two independent entities or as one. If both countries wish to grow economically and improve the living standard of their peoples, then it is logical to do business with your neighbor in terms of cost benefits at least.

The root cause of our problem in both countries, (take it or leave it) is tyranny, mismanagement (i.e. corruption, nepotism) and lack of democracy and freedom. If the above basic fundamentals are right In both countries I don’t foresee any problem which prevents us from living together again.

Cheers!
