Just a small percentage of Ethiopians have access to internet and an even smaller part understand proxies. Because I am one of them I am regularly asked what the news is. Meaning that because I read foreign sources I know more what’s going on in my country then people that have no access to it. But if they had, they would be voracious readers.
The government may have had the thought that they could stem the publics 'over politicized-ness'.The reality is it needs just a spark and the freedom fires will burn like ever before. They are doing all they can to hold information back from the public.
The blogs that others and me write are mainly for the consumption of the Diaspora.
So Addis Ferenji could come back to Ethiopia, wrote about how people detest the ruling parties'kebele meetings and visited the Kaliti jail to speak to the imprisoned members of the opposition. Then she announced she would be silent. So what happened? They told her that mr. Ferenji could come into trouble? Maybe the expensive lobby bureau in Washington needed some ammunition. So they let her come, let her write her blogs and presented it to congressmen in the United States. They did not take a big risk. What could AF reveal we do not already know. That the Oromo population are not very keen about the ruling party? Or that African jails are less convenient than an European horse stable? Read the annual human rights report made by the State Department and you be amazed what they know about Ethiopia.
Ethio-Zagol’s seminawork.blogspot is regularly visited by me. He/She is a very well informed person who is writing it. He, or she for that matter, knows what’s going on in the streets, but also gives accurate account of what’s happening in the courtroom during the trial against the opposition leaders, journalists and civil society members. We get information as deep as the Crime Ministers Office. He knew that Bereket ‘Goebbels’ Simon, alias Baghdad Bob, had a stroke, was hurried to Israel and that his wife had rushed to the bank to get money to pay for the doctors. He even knew that probably for publicity reasons Bereket ‘Goebbels’ Simon, alias Baghdad Bob was brought to the party conferences but left as soon as the cameras had his appearance on tape. Thanks for the information Ethio-Zagol.
Probably the Mafia Gang sees no reason to hide this kind of information anymore. They have noticed that it works to their disadvantage, specially when the Diaspora is using it as an argument to reveal their undemocratic nature.
What about me? I wished I was better informed about what’s going on. But that’s Ethiopian reality. I remember calling abroad to hear what was going on when the munitions depot exploded in 1991.
But let me try to remain a pain in the ass for the Mafia Gang and their servants. Ethiomedia.com, Ethiolion.com, EthioDenhaag.com, Ethioforum.org, Debteraw.com , Nazret.com and others are all blocked because they bring more than news. They openly support the democratic movement and encourage the organization of resistance.
