Press release – Miss East Africa Kenyan trip
Miss East Africa UK visits orphanages in Kenya
Ugandan beauty Brenda Akot has fulfilled her promise of creating more awareness for orphaned and underprivileged children within East Africa by visiting two of the most prominent orphanages in Kenya. The seven day tour which started on 15th of may saw Brenda visit Nyumbani Children’s home and Rafiki children’s’ home.
Miss East Africa Uk 2006, Brenda started her tour with Nyumbani children’s’ home which is home to approximately 100 children ranging from newborn to twenty-three years old. Founded in 1992, Nyumbani Children's Home is an active response to the rising number of HIV infected children born in Africa every day. Brenda expressed her wish to carry out an intensive campaign for these children. “Many of my friends and family around me in the UK will definitely be willing to support me in this journey by donating or volunteering their services,” said Brenda
“Children at Nyumbani were happy considering their status; you wouldn’t think they were infected by HIV/AIDS. They were like normal children running around. However they need more from the public out there”, she added.
At Rafiki children’s home, Brenda experienced a special connection with the orphans. Brenda noted that despite having little or almost nothing to rejoice over, the children seemed very happy, family orientated and content with their lives. Rafiki children’s home has two centres, one situated in Nakuru and the other in the remote Ibencho. Both centres give refuge and shelter to a total of 294 orphaned children.
However, with an increase of the number of children orphaned through HIV/AIDS, Rafiki homes still continue to take in children on a daily basis.
Miss East Africa is playing a very important role in raising the awareness of the plight of these children. “We are trying to reach out to individuals and companies alike worldwide to help give a bright future to these children,” said the founder, Pauline Long. “In a world full of resources poverty is not a way of life but an injustice which must be eradicated,” she added.
The twenty one year old fashion student is urging well wishers around the world to try and consider helping as it does not cost a lot to give a child the basic needs of life. They need so much help as they have a future a head of them.
