Eternal bliss in Ethiopia: Meles Zenawi's inexcusable ignorance

By Isaac Ugbabe

Echoing the Ethiopian government’s recent call for food aid, British diplomat, Paddy Ashdown, has requested the international community’s urgent assistance in preventing a looming humanitarian crisis. Reuters reports that 160,000 tons of food are required if the devastating effects of poor rainfall are to be avoided. According to the Economist magazine, this year has seen the worst drought in East Africa since possibly 1991. Production of Kenya’s staple crop, maize, is expected to fall by a third, with subsistence farmers suffering the most. In several parts of the country, villagers are already dependent on monthly government rations of maize-meal and cooking oil. Somalia, faced with attrition from an escalating civil war, is now also considering the daunting prospect of supplying emergency food supplies to about 3.6 million hungry people. Yet, it is Ethiopia, Africa’s second most populous nation, that is most susceptible to climate change, and, confronting the specter of famine, will have to ask itself why it is once again in this perilous situation. Paddy Ashdown, speaking to Reuters about the possibility of 6.2 million Ethiopians starving to death, said, “We can prevent this situation getting to much worse proportions.”

What? Wynae Ethiopia hagare, Ertrian and Tigrian sucked your blood and crashed your bones. This is beyond my wildest imagination, Melese’s body guards and Addis Airport security heads are Eriterians????????

So the roumer that Melese is Eriterian must be true.

“... a picture of the airport for my mother, and told various confidential info on the security measures of the airport (ever wondered why at some point there were several reports of Ethiopian Airlines planes being hijacked – mostly during internal flights, but once in the Comoros, where the plane crash-landed and Mohammad Amin died among several others – and then no more hijackings? I know now, but my lips are sealed). ..“

Addis by Night
2. The only surprise, and a very pleasant one at that, happened during my flight to Nigeria. Having taken Ethiopian Airlines, I had to switch planes in Addis, and had a 4 hour layover from 11pm to 3 am. I had been advised by the Ethiopian Embassy in Berlin that, despite the fact that I would be travelling on a German passport, I would still need a transit visa for my layover in Addis due to the fact that, according to my passport, I had been born in Asmara. I had been furious when they told me this, it seemed so senseless, especially taking into account the irony that I was actually born in Addis, and had an Ethiopian passport for 17 years of my life. Considering this, and that fact that I would be arriving in Addis in the middle of the night, I had no hopes of seeing any part of this city where I lived till I was 8, and which I had last seen 7 years ago. While in Frankfurt, my mother had mysteriously announced that someone would be meeting me at the airport in Addis, and I had wondered who this would be – I was told the person would recognise me. So imagine my surprise when, having gotten off the plane and just joined the immigration line at the very nice, new Addis Ababa International Airport, a man in uniform comes up to me, asks me my name and tells me that I do not need to go through immigration, he would be taking care of me. The various officials at immigration winked us through – no checks, nobody even looked at the transit visa that had pissed me off – and the man invited me for tea at the duty free shopping area. It turns out he knows my mother’s family very well, is a distant relative, and has a high position in Security at the airport. We chatted for a while, and when I told him how long I had not been to Addis in, he asked me if I would like to see the city. Before I knew it, we had simply driven out of the airport, and he took me on a half-hour tour of Addis-by-night!!! I could not believe it – the whole time I was imagining how I wished my parents – and especially my mother – and my sisters were with me. At that time of night only night watchmen and an unbelievable number of ladies-of-the night and their clients were out, but it was till great to whiz through the streets with the sweet smell of the fir-tree hedges in my nose, a scent that brings back childhood memories I did not know I had, going down Bole Road, where we used to live, seeing the countless new buildings, construction sites and good roads that testify to an economic growth rate which Eritrea can currently only dream of. The gentleman drove me back to the airport and asked if I wanted to wait for my onward flight in the VIP lounge reserved for heads of state and first class passengers, but, although flattered, I told him I wanted to look at the several duty free shops where I had glimpsed lovely scarves, and the kind of books I would not find anywhere else. Leaving me in the care of a junior security official, he went off to resume his sleep. What an experience! I was even allowed to take a picture of the airport for my mother, and told various confidential info on the security measures of the airport (ever wondered why at some point there were several reports of Ethiopian Airlines planes being hijacked – mostly during internal flights, but once in the Comoros, where the plane crash-landed and Mohammad Amin died among several others – and then no more hijackings? I know now, but my lips are sealed). Anyway, I managed to exercise great discipline and bought just two books and a traditional t-shirt, planning to splurge during my layover on the way back.

The Erit who said she knows about Our Airport confidential info explains about herself as follows:
"..I’m an Eritrean/Ethiopian in my early 30s and mother (eeek, I can’t believe that’s me) of a little boy born in January 2008. I started this blog while we were living in India, where our son was born...

Momona’s papa (Mpapa) and I met in 1995 at the University of Dayton in Ohio while I was doing my bachelor’s and he was doing his MBA as an exchange student frm Germany. I worked part time in the International Services office, which processed all international students’ applications, so I got first digs…… Four and a half years later, we got married in Frankfurt, to where I had moved after completing a master’s degree in the UK. Fast forward another 8 years, and Momona was born.

A new and deeply statisfying chapter of our lives has begun – the footloose days are over, and so is the wanderlust that has taken us so many places on a whim. (Correction: I am itching to travel again.)...

In one hand Melees boasts about the economical boom of Ethiopia and the propoganda of the pre-election shallow political progress that is well designed for the advantage of the EPDRF which is well enveloped by the TPLF gangs and the other hand the usual cry for food for the millions of starved Ethiopians. Everything seems ok on the surface due to ongoing mass media propaganda by the ruling parity while many vital parties who represent the majority of the Ethiopia’s citizens are excluded. Example: Judge Burtukan of kinijit is still in prison, harassing the members of Mr. Bulcha’s and Dr. Merarra’s party members. The heart and the minds of the majority of the Ethiopian citizens are not convinced except the minority party EPDRF member that was established by theTigray mafias.

The famine would have been avoided if Meles and his Party are accountable to citizens!

They are bussy running for power that they do not care if people die unless media finds out!

It is hard to hide now!

A year a go Meles kicked out Medai and NGO not to work to feed people. Meles wants to get the food himself and distribute it where he could get voice.

FOOD FOR ELECTION!

I like that

""" he’s either a shameless opportunist, or that, after years of helping himself to the country’s dwindling supply of khat, is delusional enough to think the brokering of such deals with the West, without the consent of his people, can continue indefinitely. It will take more khat than he can chew to ever make that dream a reality, and more coffee than he can consume to keep him awake that long.""""

it is a mystery how we cannot manage food security in ethiopia. How can you face the same problem over and over and never succeed in facing it head on and outlining resolutions? I know a lot of measures have been take to address the issue but it looks like it is not sufficient. We have lost the war on hunger.

We do not need to look anywhere else when we have the proof right in front of our eyes.

As we all know Meles reign began with drought and it become his famous motto of his 20 years in power.

Since 1991 Ethiopia’s ruling party has been depending on food aid to save Ethiopian's life year after year now for 20 years.

Two previous great governments were accused, ridiculed and ousted for their 1st time occurrence of this tragedy.

Now Meles and EPRDF are proudly and with conviction demanding money and depend on food aid for their failure to govern and starving millions and millions of people every year for 20 years.

The world or the food donors seem not to be in shocked and owe any more but wait and have aid readily available when Meles cries for handouts. We don’t find any donor nation is accusing Meles for his failures, ineptness and luck of democracy.

Meles definitely is an ignorant person. He is filled with hate and inability to hatch out of his stupid selfishness and narrow mindedness.

All these famine and death that could easily been avoided is occurring due to his failed and narrow-minded politics.

Our great previous leaders did not have formal education but were filled with wisdom and truly clean character. Had he been a person of wisdom or good character with the opportunity he had, he could have easily transformed this great rich in recourses country into a greater country that every one prospers, respects and would love to flock to.

I support the govt on most of its policies, but not on this one.Yes,they tried to eliminate hunger by building roads, schools and other things which are important to deter famine.Nevertheless, they have to take a drastic measure to tackle this problem which is affecting our people once and for all.I know the govt is open about this, however, neither openness nor foreign aid wont solve anything. in fact it will help to continue to haunt our people for a long time to come.I am not undermining the govt effort, but they have to give this problem a high priority since no one want any one to go hungry in our country.wether it is natural or man made there is no excuse for this,

Can we please stop blaming each other for now, and help those innocent people who are starving to death?

I am seeing foreigners spending time to figure out how they can feed our people.
But us, we always balm one another and spend unnecessary time instead of discussing in a current situation.

I understand that our government could do better to avoid these things. But for what ever reason it didn’t happened. We need to stop asking or discussing on something that will may take us long time to get the answer. We don’t have time for that and let’s not spend time on that, our people are dying. We need to show them that we are there form them, they need us, they are our responsibilities. Let’s figure out how we can help.
You now what? Imagine if all Ethiopians all over the world if we contribute fare about of money, do we real need other peoples money? I don’t thing so.

If hungry people work harder then the hunger disappear. But the hungry people who came to power instead of working they start eating until they become fat then they started to be reach with out working, and now they even started to feed their dogs. Where do you think all this wealth come from? By taking from the weak ones.

Most of you dont remember how owyanes came to power you dont know which one was hand and which one was leg. Now you dont know if they were the same people unless you see carefully the disappearing tigre stamp on the top of the eye brow which is endagered by the fat accumulated on the face. There is no shortatage of food according to tplf/eprdf, there is only a problem of fair distribution. You got money you can buy food. If you are tigre contact the tigrai deve org. or eprdf.

Fair distribution of our wealth is dircetlly proportional to our exerice of democracy.
