Ethiopia - DLA lobbyist Embarrassed at Berhanu's EU Hearing

June 26, 2008 (Brussels)
The European Union parliamentary hearing was held in Brussels yesterday on ever worsening political and human rights situation in Ethiopia, EMF source said. Dr. Berhanu Nega, Mayor-elect of Addis Ababa, and leader of G7 movement presented his well prepared report at the hearing.

European parliament's committees of the Human rights, Development and ACP-EU representatives have attended the hearing. Representatives of the International crisis group and several Ethiopians have also attended the hearing. Meles Zenawi's representatives didn't dare to appear and face Dr. Berhanu. However, the Zenawi regime sent two from its multi-million paid lobby firm, DLA Piper to shamefully represent it.

"I am from lobby firm DLA Piper. I have a question to you and Ms Ana Gomes. Why don't you fight the government in Ethiopia, like Professor Mesfin does, than from Diaspora?" Zenawi's lobbyist Asked.

The presence of DLA Piper lobbyist at such hearing was very strange. "We have never seen you in any of our sessions before," The UK Labor Party spokesperson and Co-President of the African, Caribbean and Pacific / EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly, Glenys Kinnock said the lobbyist. Glenys has also backed the recent Human Rights watch report that criticizes the EU executives to be silent on the crimes against Humanity being committed by Meles Zenawi regime.

"In Portugal, we also had the same brutal dictatorial regime as the Meles Zenawi's," Honorable Anna Gomes responded to the lobbyist. "We fought it both from inside and out side." As a chief European observer mission, Ms. Anna witnessed once again that Kinijit leaders have won the elections. "Berhanu would have been in power. But the regime put him in jail." Anna added.

"You were doing everything to kill HR 2003," Dr. Berhanu responded to the lobbyist. "You earn money by defending a corrupt and criminal regime at the expense of the misery of millions of the Ethiopian poor." He added. Berhau further elaborated the crimes of the regime until the lobbyist made an apology. "We don't want to fight a regime with in the rule of the game created in favour of it. We don't want to fight in a frame work of what the regime wants us to be." Berhanu said.

It was then apparent that the DLA lobbyists were not in position to defend a corrupt and criminal regime. They seemed to have been very much embarrassed. They finally appreciated Dr. Berhanu for his commitment and made an apology.

A high level talk was also held on Tuesday, 25 June 2008 with top level EU executives. "He met with Javier SOLANA and Louis Michel office. It was an extremely high level talk," source said. In the meetings, Berhanu warned the European Union about the looming danger because of their wrong foreign policy in the East Africa region.

The problem with Berhanu Nega is that he is a guy who always seeks the easy way out. He has a very inflated opinion of himself as the great thinker and with his arrogant know-it-all attitude. But the fact has always been that he has almost always failed in his "calculated"political moves. People who know him from his stint as an EPRP "fighter" paint a very dismal picture of Berhanu as a coward who would sell his mother to live for one more day. He now thinks that the toothless EU parliament will deliver power to his doorstep in a silver platter. What a looser!

There is a point to be made about Dr. Berhanu's choice of venue to continue the struggle against the apartheid regime in Ethiopia. He could have stayed in Ethiopia and fought the brave fight until his final breath and that would have been admirable but the question one needs to ask is what would be the result of that fight? Undoubtedly the TPLF regime would use any excuse to put him in jail or use any opportunity to assassinate him. In some respect that could strengthen the determination of the Ethiopian people to continue the struggle but on the other hand it could also lead to frustration.
We can argue about the pros and cons of remaining in Ethiopia vs. leading the struggle from a safe distance however the fact that we have to fight both from inside of the country and outside remains. In that respect whatever we may think of Dr. Berhanu's decision to stay in Diaspora we can't deny the fact he will be an effective advocate for the cause of democracy and justice in Ethiopia. If TPLF regime didn't feel threatened by his effectiveness its agent's wouldn't be following his every step.

EU Commission launches online registry for lobbyists
25 June 2008, 00:24 CET
(BRUSSELS) - The European Commission launched on Monday an online, voluntary registry for the thousands of lobbyists gravitating around the European Union's executive arm, but critics complained it was toothless.

Organisations that decide to participate will have to provide basic information such as who they are, their objectives, areas of interest and how they are funded.

And what is that with Ana Gobeze? She is proving herself that she is in love with Birhanu. Why isn't she supporting Hailu Shawel or Birtkukan? From day one in 2005, she was behind him, providing him hotel, etc....

Dr Birhanu is a scam of the nation, no ethiopian government will be unseated from Europe or USA. I havent seen any government in our history that was imposed upon us the people by foreign forces. Its only the diaspora fools that hope the hopless, that wish the non-existant. Anyway, there is nothing to say, they can not learn from their past mistakes, we will continue to see them rolling down in the hills. You and your co's need to put up or shut up, it sounds the CUD voters are in portugal and Spain. Dr Birhanu is a looser. I wont be surprised to see him making another apology for his current mistakes aswell. The EPRDF wether one likes it or not is there to stay, and has got support of the public, I myself don want to see the divided CUD coming to power in Ethiopia. I rather see a well organised one party rule of the EPRDF. Thanks for the martyrs who opened ethiopian politics to everyone, the EPRDF has started the democratisation process and the CUD is trying to destroy it. THE cUD is a reformed and unarmed dergue. All former Shaleka and Captains, and Dergue intellectuals are members of the Party. Its the struggle between the old and dead regime the Dergue and the current regime led by the EPRDF. VIVA EPRDF

the question was simple. "why arent you (dr.brhanu) in ethiopia like all of your comrades".
the answer is also short and simple.
and it is because the good dr. is not as comitted as the rest of his coleagues to sacrifice his comfort. otherwise no one spoke against armed struggle and those who were supporting it more than brhanu did. of course that was until he was jailed.

This criminal wasting of hard earned public money is yet another reminder that the illegitimate minority TPLF regime is morally bankrupt and can not claim to represent us any longer. No one should excuse this immoral display of arrogance at a time when millions of our citizens are dropping like flies every day from disease and starvation. A fair and compassionate government would spend all its resources on alleviating the plight of our people. TPLF have proved time and time again that they are neither compassionate not fair.

This is not just about financial mismanagement. This is about Meles’s utter disdain to us the people of Ethiopia and the International Community as a whole. The TPLF regime is taking us all for a fool when it goes shamelessly hand in cup to the UN and donor nations in our name while at the same time spends huge sums of money on foreign lobbyists to defend itself from its own citizens. Such a government can not be taken seriously to rescue our country and our people from the myriad of problems we are facing. Its priorities do not lie with the Ethiopian people vindicating anyone who thinks Meles and TPLF are not there to advance the interests of the Ethiopian people but to amass as much ill gotten wealth as possible before they make their inevitable get away.

It is astonishing the lobbyist had the audacity to question Berhanu’s course of action. It is an ill conceived attack designed to throw in to question the creditability of anyone who dares to expose the countless crimes of Meles and the TPLF regime. The spot light should instead be on Meles’s endless subversive actions both inside and outside of the Ethiopian “Parliament“ that are driving legitimate individuals to seek refuge abroad and continue to fight from there.

Soon it will be illegal for political parties not to contest unfair and rigged elections. It is illegal to receive financial support from abroad. We recently witnessed first hand the regime’s unrelenting efforts to disrupt a public meeting called by a legitimate political group. It is ridicules to expect Berhanu or any other individual or party to work in the country under the prevailing unfair, illegal, restrictive and intimidating circumstances.

What is rule when the government that created it is not bound by it? Can such government hold others responsible for breaking the rules when itself habitually breaks them?

The time for well organized and determined peaceful resistance has come. All well meaning and genuine opposition parties should forget about elections. Participating in future elections will only serve to legitimize a criminal government and we certainly do not want to do that. Besides, we can not endure another two years of repression, lies, deceit, murder, torture, rape and economic mismanagement. Our situation is very grave. TPLF will continue to sell off our country piece by piece as it did over the last 16 years, first to EPLF and then to the SUDAN if left to its own devices. Soon we will have no country called Ethiopia to call home if we do not rise up and take action before it is too late.

Such news are spine-chilling to Meles and his cohorts so much so that they rushed to give away 1600 km-long strip of fertile land to Sudan with the hope that the porous boarder would be sealed against possible armed rebellion. This happened a few weeks after they heared of the news of the formation of Ginbot 7 Movement.

The TPLF thugs: In the likes of - Shewa Anbessa, Agam, Jrgna Gondere, and Olana;

Most likely you are all Woyane/TPLF cadres assigned to vomit your venom of hate, insult, and lies. However you try nothing will change the truth that the master of Woyane/TPLF thugs Mellesse and you (his puppets) are liars, murderers, criminals, and above all masters of treachery and treasons. Your writings show your low level of English and utter ignorance. As the saying goes “a dog barks for the one that feeds it”, so do you. Obviously you are barking because Mellesse gives you your meal. You don’t have any sense of self pride, integrity, and self respect. You are really low life.

Shewa Anbessa,
Whether you like it or not Berhanu is the elected mayor of Addis Abeba. Woyane/TPLF’s guns, killings, imprisonment, tortures, and lies can not change that. Yes, Ethiopians should fight and deal with the TPLF thugs both inside and outside. This is more prudent and the right strategy. Secondly, you fight in a country when you have a government that abides by its laws unlike the Woyane/TPLF mafia that don’t know nor understand the meaning and substance of constitutions, laws, and governance.

AGAM,
Yes, 2005 was a dark year for Woyane/TPLF, Mellesse, and all low life like you. It was the brightest day for Ethiopia and Ethiopians. Nothing will change that. Ethiopians and the whole world know that Woyane/TPLF and Mellesse’s courts, laws, and constitution are jokes and mockery of justice with no moral authority of any kind. Mellese made it sham, dirty, and of no values and consequences. Ethiopians including the CUD leaders were charged, imprisoned, and judged by Mellesse’s kangaroo court that does not have any type of moral authority.

Jegna Anbessa,
Kinfu is only communicating what transpired in the EEU meeting in Brussels. If you are true to your name or real Gondere why don’t you go and fight in Western Gonder where the Sudanese Army has taken four districts from Ethiopia or the treacherous Woyane/TPLF thugs/soldiers who are helping Sudan to take Ethiopian territory. I suggest you better cry and scream if it helps you for the spirit of Kinijit in its various forms is alive and well. The same with your nightmare HR2005 it is pretty alive and kicking.

Olana,
Rather than attacking an elected Mayor or individuals you should have better looked around you where your brothers and sisters are being murdered, tortured, raped, and killed by your TPLF/Woyane masters. I say “masters” because they will never make you one of them. Then of course, you are a coward that does not see, hear, and feel peoples’ suffering. You only care about your meals and bark like a dog for the person who gave you one. There is no looser like you and your TPLF/Woyane masters and thugs for you have lost Ethiopia and Ethiopians in 2005. You will never get back that.

I am not a fan of Birhanu. But, I fully understand why he chose to fightt the Woyane gangs from outside. He is absolutely right in doing so. Remember what happened a couple of years ago. The gang imprisoned all of the leaders of the CUD and there was no one outside the country who would continue to organize the struggle against Woyane occupation. I am absolutely convinced that the way the resistance is currently conducted against Woyane dedebits will bring permanent peace and democracy in our country. Except the Woyane bandits, every political organization of Ethiopia want to see democratically elected government. It is a matter of time before we see the bandits wiped out from the face of the earth. That time will come sooner than the Woynes expect. They cannot continue to loot and kill our people forever.

Was it the same three years old “ I am the mayor-elect and blab blab’? Perhaps was he introducing his new movement’s political agenda to the members of parliament? Did they tell him to return home and put up a man's fight in real bushes? I bet he had a good time with his good old mistress, Hanna Gobez and would full-time join him in his "titk tigil" in and around the most luxurious five star hotels across Europe and America with the Diaspora money. He is now man of the moment for “neft nafakiwoch” within the Diaspora. Rest assured this honeymoon won’t last long; he would soon vanish into the thin air like all his predecessors.

DR Birhanu and his co's cant take us back to the miserable days of Dergue, we thought they wont come back, now they are trying to revive as being liberators in the name of democracy, unity and justice as usual. Please read this article written by a scotish man who visited Tigrai after the bombing of hauzien. Its been 20 years since Hauzien was bombarded by Dergue, 2500 civillians were killed in a broad day light. No hukman right group mentioned about it. Birhanu's and mesfin's werent there. The people had to fight on themselves to destroy the Dergue. dergue got destroyed and now same people are being threatened by loosers, loosers who disrespectfully lost the 17 year civil war. These are the groups who are now trying to take us back to the old rule, a rule where ethnic groups used to be seen as traitors. Please read this and think of posetive future for our country.

Scots photographer Gerry McCann returns to Ethiopia after 20 years

Jun 21 2008 Gerry McCann

Scots photographer and journalist Gerry McCann travelled to the front line in war-torn Ethiopia 20 years ago. On June 22,1988, bombing raids devastated the town of Hausien. Reports put the number of dead at between 350 and 2500. Gerry arrived in Hausien months later and found families desperate for food and money, and children who played with unexploded bombs instead of toys. Now, 20 years since the attack by the soviet-backed regime on the market town, he reports on how its people have recovered.

THE last time I saw Abadit Geredche, she was a new-born baby cradled in the arms of a mother traumatised by the vicious civil war raging around her.

I took their picture back then in 1989 but in my memory the baby was a boy.

When I returned to the Ethiopian town of Hausien this year, I discovered the child had been female and had grown into a confident young woman brimming with hope in a region still facing terrible deprivation.

Abadit, 19, wants to teach a subject sadly lacking in this part of the world.

"I am in high school and getting ready to take the university entrance exam," she said. "I want to go to the university and become ateacher of civics, which is what we call human rights."

Twenty years ago, Abadit's mother Tsahei had six children under 12 and was due to give birth.

She and her husband sold tea and sewa, a local fermented beer, in their home.

During a bombing raid, it was completely destroyed. Her 40-year-old husband, Aluwai Yihaduste, was killed and she was buried in the rubble.

Tsahei said: "Just before the bombing, Aluwai had planted our fields. Later some local people helped with the harvest, but it was not very good because of weeds.

"Without their help, we would have starved. As you can see, we still live on this small farm so life has always been difficult."

Tsahei has had more to contend with. Life as a subsistence farmer in the Tigrai region is hard enough. But her eldest son joined the the Tigrayan People's Liberation Front (TPLF) and was killed in the fighting with the Sovietbacked Derg, one of the most murderous regimes on the African continent.

They waged a war of absolute terror on their own people. Their only crime was that they supported the rebel TPLF.

Tsahei retains the dignity of a woman unbowed by cruel circumstances and Abadit is clearly the light in her eye.

Abadit said: "I know all about the Derg and I can tell you I have very bad feelings towards them. But the country is moving on now."

Before my first journey to Hausien in 1988, I had been waiting in Gedaref in eastern Sudan with an assortment of aid workers.

After a few weeks, most of them had gone elsewhere. Without warning, I was allowed to go on. I crossed the border into Ethiopia and joined a group of fighters from the TPLF.

We travelled on lorries and always at night because of the risk of attack from the air.

Eventually we arrived in Hausien. The town had been largely obliterated.

It was singled out by the Derg for special treatment.

I photographed the effects of the bombing and interviewed survivors. Twenty years on, I wanted to track down some of those survivors and discover what life was like now in Hausien, still a market town in one of the world's most hostile environments. In particular, I wanted to hear the experiences of some of the world's poorest people in a place which, uncommonly for the region, is marked by the absence of war.

After travelling for a few days, I asked at a sewa house. The owner told her daughter to take me to another sewa house. There I met Iquar Gebre Georgis, whom I had come across in 1989 when she was selling sewa in her house.

She had thought the house would offer some protection from the fighting but, as she told me again this time: "We thought we were safe but the roof fell in and the walls collapsed. There were maybe 25 people eating and drinking but only three survived.

"They weren't fighters, just farmers and traders. My daughter, Negisti, was only 13 but she died as well. I was also buried for around four hours. My grandmother and grandfather were killed in another part of the town. We buried Negisti in the church."

She was so frightened she fled to the outskirts where she had a small farm. She continued to live there for some time and was able to earn avery meagre living from the land.

Meanwhile, her son, Haile Selassie, joined the rebel army and fought until the defeat of the Derg. Iquar went back to her old trade of brewing and selling sewa. Business is better than ever, but it is still a subsistence living.

The next day, I met Mulubrhan Grmay, for whom life in the evil days of the Derg was indelibly marked in Tigrai and elsewhere.

She was held for months and beaten, but not ferociously. She agreed to marry a guard who was a Derg soldier she knew from Hausien. But she soon fled.

"As soon as I could, I ran away and met up with the fighters in the bush," said Mulubrhan. "But by then I was pregnant so I had the baby and she was brought up by my grandmother. Then I became a fighter. I was 16 and it was 1986.

"Right from the start, we were all ready to die. In fact, we wanted to die before our comrades.

"I knew from the very first day that I might die or become handicapped. I was in a lot of fighting. I have no regrets about those days because I played my part in bringing down the Derg.

"If we hadn't done that, wewould not have the peace we have now."

She stayed on in the army after the defeat of the Derg and was involved in the next war to stop the Oromo people breaking away from the new Ethiopian Republic, which she believed should be united.

Finally she left in 1996 but her life continued to take unusual turns. She made enough money working as a merchant to open a small hotel in the Afar region.

She became involved in smuggling clothes from Somalia.

But she was caught by the army and fined 30,000 birr, about £1500, so that, as she said, "was the end of the hotel".

Mulubrhan returned to the family home in Hausien and now sells coffee and sewa on the edge of the market square. She wants to find a way to continue her education and become a nurse.

Another resident of Hausien who fled in 1988 was Fatima.

She is typical of many of her generation who grew up under the Derg. She still cannot read or write but would like to learn so that she understands more when she goes to her boys' local school.

She helped her father sell clothing in the market until he died three years ago. Now she buys spices from farmers and sells them in the market.

Not much has changed in Hausien after 20 years, although it has grown bigger and the houses have mainly been rebuilt.

The market still thrives every Wednesday, Dashen Bank is building a branch complete with its own vault and a five-storey office block is going up.

But the relative absence of war is obvious in other ways. Agriculture is improving and slowly modernising. Advances in education are simply astounding.

It is a benchmark of the Derg's negligence that today most rural people over 40 are illiterate. But their children are not.

The development of health services has almost matched the advances in education. There is also tourism.

Ethiopia is the place of stunning scenery and legendary journeys.

And perhaps the most incredible journey will be the country's return to normality.

Tomorrow Ethiopia will commemorate the day of the awful bombing of Hausien by holding a national holiday.

The perpetrators of the crime and many others have been tried over a period of 15 years. Eighteen of them were convicted of crimes against humanity.

Hope it has given u a highlight of the past, lossers will continue to loose

Meles send a foreigner so that an Ethiopian shall not sit with a cowardly banda.

You need to get reminded that you can't wash your hands clean from your bloody hands and the parasitic life style you were dislodged and the power you shamefully ran away from. You can't finish a war and you can't stand defeat. Get over it, Ethiopia has never seen a day better than today.

You have come so low you disrespect the dead Hero the father of Meles Zenawe who stood up for freedom and his son finished the battle every day passing under fire. Don't expect Meles to run away like Mengistu and the little warm Berhanu who has never shot a gun and even heard the sound of the gun in peace time.

The only fruitful contribution Berhanu can present to Ethiopia as a gift is:

to go back to Addis and collect this half a million Qontcheras hidden in Addis for the purpose of HUTU-ACTION. After collecting, he can bring them to the places, where Inset caltivation flourishes , since they are more useful hier.

Then there is no more hunger in Ethiopia and Berhanu can go to the TERARA with out any trouble.

Woyane!

Woyane's are getting exited when their leaders are exposed. They want us also to believe that Kinijit is dead. What is dead is Woyane's spirit not Kinijit.

The time is near and we see where these woyanes are running to. These days the recepients are refusing to receive like before.

Sorry!

LET ASSUME THAT Berhanu IS an elected Mayor of Addis Ababa. let give him that.

My point is even if he was taken his job by now you will be out of the office...

do you see my point after two year a new vote was placed and a new Mayor was elected we like it or not this Naw mayor must and should replace the old Mayor

Meaning Dr.Berhanu can not be called elelcted Mayor because his time is OVER AND DONE... IF YOU KEEP ON calling him the elected Mayor then you should better add one thing to his title... Elected Mayor for LIFE otherwise you sould call him the Farmer or X-Mayor of E Addis Ababa..

For now on I call him X-Mayor....Just like Milk use it or lost it... Just because you don't drink the milk it's expire date will not stand still the same with our beloved Mayor... just because he did not take his job that doesn't mean we have waite for him for the next 30 or evern 40 years to put him as our mayor since he did not have it the first time around... if he want he have to be elected again otherwise he lost it by defoult.

Abuyie Asa Petros,

The hutus are 85%, ahhh excuse me I meant 93%, of Rwanda. In the end, they will rule their destiny. As the great Mahatma once told Lord Mountbatten, one hundred thousand Englishmen can not rule three hundred fifty million Indians indefinately.:>>

On a brighter note, NAZRET, how come you guys miss the news of the newly organized medrek of the opposition in Addis. The Reporter has an article, I think you should post that here.

"I am from lobby firm DLA Piper. I have a question to you and Ms Ana Gomes. Why don't you fight the government in Ethiopia, like Professor Mesfin does, than from Diaspora?"
dumb dumb dumb......
Lobbyists aren't dumb. You hire them because they are competent and have the connections and the resources to influence policies, legislations and change public opinion in the direction their employer desires. Lobbyists target policy makers and opinion leaders. They may go to meetings to gather information not to openly fight like a representative of their employer. They have well defined stategies and operate more subtly by using their different influential connections. And they are not for the business of argueing with self appointed exiled political leaders. They are not lame duck persons. They don't open their mouth aimlessly and confront adversaries of their employer in the way reported in this self-serving and fallacious news article. Why would a DLA lobbyist care to enter into polemic with Marshal Dr. Berhanu and his foot soldier and good old mistress Hanna Gobez (Ana Gomez)? Such types of the dumbest stories can be made up only by our bootless and desperate exile groups. What’s funny is they make stories and they declare victory. It has been the same for the last 20 or 30 years. The funnier part is there are some others who are joining this empty victory celebration.

If you think power rests with Anna Gomez go and join them. No wonder why u guys are spending your time infront of foreign embassies and foreign parliaments in Europe and USA. Anyway, we know you well. You don have the gut to fight, so u will continue paarading in Europe and USA. The EPRDF has destroyed your institutions which used to repress the people of ethiopia.Dergue's army which was close to half a million was obliterated in GOnder, Tigrai, Wello, Gojjam, Wellega, everywhere.Don forget the 17 years of civil war which ended in the VICTORY OF THE EPRDF/TPLF. The era of chauvinists is over, sorry to tell u that, go and ask Anna Gomez to bring the reformed Dergue(CUD) to power.
