Ethiopia - Formation of UDJ does not at all usher in a new era

By Saba

Birtukan Mideksa might have won the hearts of some of the 350 members gathered on that day in Ethiopia, but not mine and millions of other Ethiopians‘. It is preposterous to suggest that the 80 or so million strong Ethiopians have fallen head over heals in love with her.

Formation of UDJ or what ever it is called does not at all usher in a new era in Ethiopian politics. If any thing, it upholds and reaffirms the status quo - power struggle, disloyalty and infighting. UDJ is by all measures a self defeating organization. It can not advocate unity when it is born out of disunity and rebellion.

If Birtukan and her co-rebels were as smart and as democratic as they would have us believe, they would have submitted themselves to the rules and regulation of CUD. No one can dispute Hailu Shawal behaved in a very embarrassing and anti-democratic manner when he suspended some of them, but that can not be an excuse to follow his suit and behave in an even more anti-democratic manner that damaged their creditability for ever. As a result, the Ethiopian people are more divided and the opposition more weakened and fractured . Hailu, Birtukan and her rebel friends should shoulder the lion’s share of the blame.

It is only the murderous despot Meles Zenawi and TPLF who have come out winners out of this sorry saga, not the pseudo- democrat Birtukan and her rebel friends and definitely not the millions of starving, destitute, disease ridden, and oppressed Ethiopians.

To my mind the bunch of idiots have shot themselves on the foot by setting up a renegade organization instead of remaining in CUD and ousting the weak, clueless and despotic ex-Derg official Hailu using the rules and regulations of the party. Their failure to do so is a clear indication of, at best, their thin support base with in the party, at worst, their anti democratic credentials and non existent political and diplomatic skills. Now we should ask how this idiots could unite an increasingly fractured and polarized society of millions of people like ours if they could not hold together a clearly disintegrating party of few hundred members. I think there is a distinct possibility that if ,God forbid, one day they take power in Ethiopia, they would go on and form another country for themselves by rebelling against our laws if they find we disagreed with them or we did not like them, or we wanted them out of office.

Mark my words, soon enough rebellion will brew in UDJ, and we will see another reneged party spring up out of it. No one needs a crystal ball to foresee this: it is the natural order in Ethiopian politics. In fact, it is the natural order in Ethiopian life. Even Ethiopian churches, the most sacred of institutions, are not immune from this disease. Tolerance and compromise are bywords in Ethiopian life.

It seems to me Ethiopians submit only to the rule that there is no rule. We are loyal only to disloyalty, well unless a gun is pointed at our temple or a bundle of worthless Ethiopian Birr is waved at us. Just what makes the hundreds and thousands of Derg and TPLF officials, cadres, secret police, solders, informers and stupid and irritating diehard TPLF supporters on this site blind to the predicament of their country or the plight of millions of their fellow citizens? The answer is money. They know no truth, no right and wrong. They are devoid of morality and principles. These degenerates would sell their grandmother for loose change. They fail to see that we all could have more money, better lives, better homes, beautifully designed towns and cities, better hospitals and schools, better transport, communication and IT systems, above all peace, freedom, dignity and respect from the rest of the world if we set up a legitimate and representative government transparent and accountable to all citizens. We have a blessed, beautiful and resource rich country that could potentially be the envy of the world. Unfortunately not much good things can be said about us, the people who inhabit it.

Surely Birtukan and her peers should know that Ethiopians should break the vicious cycle of rebellion, disloyalty and violence if we were to succeed in creating a stable, peaceful, civilized and developed country free from injustice and oppression. I guess they are grafted from the same tree as Haileselasse, Mengistu, and Meles. Hope and a better future continue to elude us until we get the basics right. How I wish I am wrong!

hey Newtegnas,

It seems that ever couple of weeks there is a new Kinijit being formed. The called 'UDJ' is just the newest Mikey Mouse abondening THe former Kinijit. Think about it,....FIrst it was CUD,...then UEDP-Medhin became the first one to seceeded. After that,..it was KIL, KIC, Kinjit-Birhanu, Kinijit-Hailu, KInijit-Temesgen, KInijit-Ayele, Kinijit-Parliama-Buden, Kinijit-Duruye-buden.

obviously Saba has lost track of relity in Ethiopia. The UDJ is rising out of the ashes of the burining it has recived from the woyane and the idiot Hailu shaul. Bertukan and her compatriots have simply picked up the pieces and made something out of it.

This is being done not in the best of all options presented. Please understand the reality on the ground. All depends on what you make of it. I am sure many heart broken Ethiopians have started hoping again even against hope. Roll your sleves for more wrok rather than breed more infighting. UDJ will succeed because it embodies the Spirit of CUD. You have a differnece in name but the contents remain the same. Ethiopians are smart enough to understand that

Look, when Ato Hailu assimilate himself to Ayte Meles-- The most shrewd dictator in the world,do we have to expect them advocate his idiocy like the other greedy morons did to Meles. Lauding Meles for selling our land foolishly. Has any single TPLF memeber vote against any thing against Ayte Meles. You guys want us just shut our ears and cover our eyes and enslaved by TPLF and their egoist supporter. No way!!! We will strive to death untill just is served to all Ethiopians. UDJ is by all measures a self defeating organization.

False! UDJ resembles the end result of the once amorphous CUD that was marred with the wasteful, cumbersome and extremely useless externalities known as Hailu, Birhanu, Andarigachew and many more pretender and escapist zombies who were there impatiently waiting the moment they can embezzle what is left of Ethiopia's drying 'moseb'. It was not Birtukan and co who have abandoned cud/kinijit rather the mentally challenged and 'gitir' old man Hailu and his counter part the pseudo-militant in reality the extremely opportunist and 'feri, asmesay duriye' Birihanu Negade. The individuals who can practice the democratic principles of CUD have kept our aspiration of achieving a democratic Ethiopia alive under the umbrella of UDJ, and many thanks to them. If your memory serves you right, they have tried everything possible to preserve the name cud/kinijit unfortunatelly Woyane's election board and its kangaroo court wouldn't let them, but that didn't prevent them from moving forward. See, there is no need to submit oneself to the dictatorship of 'atse' wanna be mute individual who was in charge of leading a supposedly vibrant democratic party but in reality even incompetent of discussing meaningful political issues in 'yekebele' meeting; leaving him and his likes behind and moving forward was the only tangible option, the UDJ members just did that. That is not only it, they have elected a person who has understood the true essence of democracy and capable of practicing it that is irrespective of age, gender, religion and ethnic background. Such is unheard of in our history and it clearly defies our lackluster accepted norms; that is an evolution and its engine natural selection in action baby! Yes, it is an evolutionary breakthrough. We are moving forward, and i recommend you should too.

For those interested, Here (EthiopiaZare) is Woizerit Birtukan Mideksa's Speech for the electorate.

We all know Kiniji alive (but, it’s terminally paralyzed)…you have to give all credit to Meles. He makes sure Ethiopians will not going to unite internally or those who live in the west. After 18yr, under a rule of Mele nobody in this earth will bring Ethiopians together. Diaspora is done!!! It’s full of hate… to see the magnitude of hate among Ethiopia communities just visit DC or Minnesota you will not going to talk about Ethiopia or Ethiopia unite ever again. They are infested with ethnic, religious and political hate. They are broken in to pieces. It’s sad to see this madness happening in free world. Good luck with your unifying message… we will see how far you will go this time with kinijit ideas.

Saba,

You sound like one frustrated person letting the steam out. You 've got to realize that we don't live in an ideally perfect world.

If you have followed the saga of CUD vis-a-vis the former chairman, and the subsequent TPLF staged drama that unfolded backhome, then it is very clear to any sane mind to figure that the logical progression that led to the formation of UDJ was/is a wise one.

Your statement above that "If Birtukan and ... would have submitted themselves to the rules and regulation of CUD ..." and further, "... behave in an even more anti-democratic manner that damaged their creditability for ever." is naive at its best, or disingenious & scheming at its worst intended to create division and weaken the opposition.

Your suggestion, if they had followed it would have mired them in an endless infighting that would have made them irrelevant politically. Besides, all that would have been for nothing since the TPLF regime was bent on awarding the name and logo of the organization to its cliques within the CUD.

I think, your scolding of the Ethiopian people in general is also unwarranted. Your article unjustly equates the persevering general public with the blood sucking EPRDF cadres, who you rightfully described as "devoid of morality and principles" and "... blind to the predicament of their country or the plight of millions of their fellow citizens."

To frank Birtukan did not really know what hit her, she was obviously the last to join CUD because it was a cool thing to do at the time, but before she knew it, she elevated to leadership, jail and then a free fully paid trip to the U.S...
the rest is history.

Her inexperience was very apparent in her speech giving skill, but hey, getting a standing ovation and loud applause, for a an inept speech, has boosted her confidence, although, I couldn't say the same about her political manuvering.

Lack of a person who was grafted from a tree Haile Selasie was grafted is a problem in Ethiopia for the last 36 suffering years of Ethiopia.

This is a response by the Ethiopian people that no amount of abuse, torture or intimidation will force the people to abundon their rightful struggle against their minority rule.
The new party is the outcome of the now dead CUD which has been infiltrated by Weyane and fell apart. This time around this party must have learned from past mistakes and is up to some thing. But if the UDJ fails, then another stronger party will rise from its ashes and all this is heralding the demise of Weyane!

Dear Saba,
Your analysis is well-versed and just. It was used to be sayed "Once a cheater is always a cheater". Let's assume Birtukan claims "I born-again", but she owes an explanation, remorse and repentance to the House of Kinijit in particular and the Ethiopian people in general to absolve and redeem herself from past transgressions.
To most Ethiopians dismay, she continued on pressing forward presumptuously by declaring a pact for life with TPLF regime. There are clear indications that suggest her connection with the TPLF gangs, ever since she led a rogue group to the West defying the orders of the party's chairman. Imagine, she is a new comer to Kinijit and Ethiopian politics. She had neither grassroot base nor mandate from voters. One can simply ask what emboldens this lady to flout directives of the leader who weild the mandates of millions of Ethiopians?
Given to her tyro status, such level of adventure to oust the popular president is unthinkable. In my view, the past 30 years have taught us good lesson and how nastier the Ethiopian politics is. If we fail to recognize this down-ward trend there is no body to blame, except us.
How can a woman who betrayed her comrades, the party leader, and Kinijit's movement, trusted to be faithful to ordinary Ethiopians and her country? Mengistu betrayed Teferi Banti, Atnafu Abate and other senior comrades and ended up decimating Ethiopia. By the same token, Meles Zenawi, betrayed dozens of his superiors as well as comrades in arms in the name of the people later to find himself the undisputable head of terror and traitor of his own nation.
Imagine, how one Pastor brought up mess and relentless scrutiny in Obama's presidential nomination. As the good old saying puts it "I can tell who you are if you tell me who your friends are". Birtukan have already had proven record of betrayal on top of scarcity of experience and rudimentary political know-how. She is also believed to be surrogate of TPLF hand picked to implement Meles Zenawi's divide and rule master plan.
Personally, I feel good if a woman empowered to be a leader, but not at the expense of our national interest. One can't jump to the moon, because it is phisically impossible. And, Birtukan can't simply jump from betrayal to the highest position of leadership. First comes first. She must repent, repent and repent and come clean, transparent and in fair process.
I appreciate Saba for your insight.
Thank you

Saba,

Who suggested 80 or so million strong hold fallen in love with Birtukan? Any way if that is the case what is your problem? As far as I am concerned it is not election time but if you have the chance to participate in one, please don’t vote for her. To me you are wolf in a sheep skin. Why do you bother writing about her if she is useless and UDJ doomed to fail? I think you are frustrated restless weyane banda as your conclusion shows; “Hope and a better future continue to elude us until we get the basics right.” What do you mean by the basic right? The basics of our country will only become right if the struggle for democracy and freedom continues and ignites in all directions. You said, “How I wish I am wrong!” I tell you are wrong in all counts and deceptive.

You pointed out some valid points regarding the weakness of the Ethiopian society in general. If that is the case what is your solution to overcome these hurdles? What and where is your action plan? You are simply repeating all the things we already knew. If you think you are smart enough come up with the goods otherwise shut up, unless your goal is to sow the seed of division in UDJ from the outset.

To me the struggle for freedom and true democracy will only come to fruition through determination and sacrifices. Lots of ups and downs and let downs along the way expected. For the optimist like myself that is normal, what matters is learning from past mistakes and taking the necessary steps to rekindle the struggle for democracy and freedom. To me that is the lesson for all us. We need to learn to think in the long term even though the misery of our poor people unbearable at present.

A political party comes and goes, UDJ is no different they tried to reorganize themselves in a difficult political circumstances and that is fine. To me at the end of the day what matters is the majority of the Ethiopian people decide their fate through the ballot box. If EPRDF, OLF, or UDJ wins genuine election I support them.

I think you are dwelling too much in the past and laden with doom and gloom news for us. I can see where you belong.

Cheers!

Nesuralah Hussien,
What you have trumpeted in here resonates the empty noise originated from the virtual world's madman aka Elias Kifle who is clearly hellbent to sabotage and destroy any form of independent thinking and the growth of promising Ethiopian political party. You have called Birtukan a cheater, transgressor, traitor, and a woyane compliance while favoringly declaring the ever fading Hailu as a popular president. was that based on facts or just a tip from the sea of your wishful thinking? You said and I quote
"There are clear indications that suggest her connection with the TPLF gangs, ever since she led a rogue group to the West defying the orders of the party's chairman."
What are those indicators that you are vehemently talking about to support your baseless character assassination, could you share them with us?
"How can a woman who betrayed her comrades, the party leader, and Kinijit's movement, trusted to be faithful to ordinary Ethiopians and her country?"
Sir, did you forget that it is Hailu Shawul that has left alone with his 18th century arrogance and dictatorship? did you forget the fact that while Birtukan and Her comrades were promoting and explaining their cause to the people, your beloved old man was obsessively engaged with the act of blackmailing his comrades? Or did you think once you are a president, there are no rules to be followed and respected, that you are immune from adhering by and submitting oneself to the rules and other principles the party upholds? Hailu and his close friends represent only their little group and perhaps AAPO, perhaps less but nothing more. For your dismay however, the newly found UDJ is the only hope Ethiopians have left with to achieve their dream of a strong, free and democratic country. Even look at what you are doing in here, you are here to defend Hailu Shawul not Ethiopians' aspirations nor Kinijit's causes and its existence. Seems like you have absolutely accepted Hailu's own principles of his black book and that is nothing comes before his own personal glory, Nothing! Don't forget, no body has contributed more than Hailu to destroy the once vibrant Kinijit, and through that we have understood that he has always been a self obsessed and impotent leader who wasn't even willing to sacrifice his ego and the arrogance that comes with it to save the party he was in charge with. Now, if you have any facts that indicates Birtukan's woyanenet, bring it forward and do us a favor, if not Shut your stupid mouth.

Brava Saba...!

"It is only the murderous despot Meles Zenawi and TPLF who have come out winners out of this sorry saga, not the pseudo- democrat Birtukan and her rebel friends and definitely not the millions of starving, destitute, disease ridden, and oppressed Ethiopians."

And when it comes to those who WILL benifit at the suffering of their fellow Ethiopians, Saba says and truthfuly so,

"They are devoid of morality and principles. These degenerates would sell their grandmother for loose change. They fail to see that we all could have more money, better lives, better homes, beautifully designed towns and cities, better hospitals and schools, better transport, communication and IT systems, above all peace, freedom, dignity and respect from the rest of the world if we set up a legitimate and representative government transparent and accountable to all citizens."

Woyane is much better than the alternatives.!!!!!
Can you imagine what would happen if CUD were to have absolute power? I know it is very difficult to imagine but we should be smart enough to analyze the situation of the last three years and conclude that these people we claim to represent us are more undemocratic than the current government.
1) CUD broken down to Birhanu and Lidetu faction. Lidetu was chastized as enemy number two (One being Meles Zenawi)
2) CUD broken down again in to KNA and KIL (Birhanu's anga and Hailu's anga) the former belived in non violence peacefull struggle while the later chose joining olf and shabia sponsorship (so we were told then)
3) CUD officially broken again into Birhanu vs Hailu after their release. this made Hailu a non factor
4) CUD continued the tradition and broken up again into Birhanu and Birtukan's faction (the former now belives in military option while the later insisting to peacefull struggle.
More to Come......
5) CUD broken again into Birhanu and Andargachew's group

6) CUD will be broken again into Birhanu and his wife......

It is really sad that we have to come to this.
I am glad that these people don't have means to kill each other and kill us on their way

Feeling like a fortune teller, I'm starting to wish mother Earth would open up and take me back before witnessing the upcoming senario. If the so called new party, a left over of another so called party, wins then it has to be a pro-woyane entity if not, the same hateful event, a rebirth of cursed day is going to strike Ethiopia. If not something worth November 2005 is going to return back to that poor mother of ours and leave her with many of her children DEAD but unburied. How sad! Like the writer, I wish I'm wrong, deeply wrong! May the Almighty creator of ours save my people and preserve my country.

That's the way to go, cause D. Birhanu is also starting his own party. These guys, whether they like it or not have gained experience could go it alone. The only time we will quarrel with them is if they allow their party to be hijacked by any ethnic group that will have an overwhelming presence, as it was the case of CUD. That’s a tough job to do though, because you can’t turn down members because of their ethnic background. Good work anyway and keep up the good work!!!

Yirgacheffee ™,

UDJ used to be the know-nothing wing of kinijit (CUD). The way kinijit sees it, even the clueless need representation in our Democracy. Now that they have decided to take their ignorance somewhere else, we wish them nothing but success in their endeavor to be the voice for the blind and naivete they were conceived to represent. It's customary to be the echo chamber of borrowed ideas like "HOPE" and "CHANGE" when one can't master or imagine the "audacity of [intelligence]." We don't know about the Americans, but we can see clearly through our hoping-against-hope La Pucelle d’Orléans. Whatever divine guidance and celestial wisdom she is claimed to radiate, to the rejoicing and pandemonium of her emasculated and enchanted followers, she is destined to be just another inconsequential pawn in Zenawi's power games. Let's just "HOPE" that the ethno-fascists don't burn her in the end, for failing to match the rubber-stamp Parliament in loyalty gemgama. Viva la commonsense.

Cheers!

Saba, I loved your writing skill and words. You are smart, but I want to give you an advise regarding your criticism of Ethiopians. Putting all the Ethiopian society as money lovers and subordiantes makes you look like a heretic. Whenever you write please do not criticize Ethiopians. Because Ethiopia incorporates a whole lot of people with different identities, with different cultural values, with different religion and with different nations and nationalities. Therefore it would be very hard and impossible to generalize and criticize them as one. Are you not a part of these great and historically rich people? Did you forget our struglle against colonialism, which had been a raw model for the Black People against slavery? Saba you should foreward your anger and frustration towards the present Ethiopian politicians not the people. Thanks.

What can I say? 99% of the comments here conform to what I was going to write! Saba, firstly, I do not think you are neither against the current regime nor a female. Secondly, please be optimistic, stop hammering people of Ethiopia as one certainly can not put over 70 million people in the same basket ... your negativity and frustration makes you sound like Pro Meles or Esayas Afewerki … You pretend to dislike the regime but I seriously doubt that … Go on Birtukan!! Don't let weyanes disguised as real Ethiopians distract you.

Saba - Please get real, take a good look at these feedback! Just have a look at couple of people who supported your article? Weyanes + Weyanes disguised behind ethnic names! Though you could use your writing skill for something constructive …
