Write to your Congressional Representative!

September 2nd, 2006

Dear Ethiopians and Ethiopian-Americans!

As you will know from the many postings on Ethiopian websites, HR 5680 is likely to be voted on in the full House of Representatives soon after the House comes back to session after Labor Day. This is, therefore, the most critical time for you to contact the Congressperson in your constituency to press him or her to vote "YES" on HR 5680. This is the time you can have a substantial impact on the collective Ethiopian effort to see this important bill passed, by making one single phone call or writing one simple letter to your elected representative!

As many may be hesitant to write a letter to their Representative, either because they may be busy, or because they have not written to Congress before, Ethiopian American Civic Advocacy (EACA) has produced a series of sample letters that can be freely used as is, adapted, or modified as needed. Please feel free to make use of these sample letters as desired, and please write your representative now to make HR 5680 happen!

We have prepared 5 variations on a sample letter from which you can feel free to choose. Each letter will touch upon a slightly different theme that concerns the pro-democracy movement and that is also presented in a way that is relevant to the US and therefore to your representative. For each of these themes, we have prepared a version for a "liberal" and a for a "conservative" congressperson. Please find the set of sample letters here:

Sample letter to liberal members of Congress,
Sample letter to conservative members of Congress.

Here are some answers to key questions:

Whom should I write to?

It's easy to find out who is the Congressperson that represents your constituency: go to www.house.gov , and in the first box enter your 5-digit zip code, then click on "Go". This will give you a link to your representative's website.

How do I know whether (s)he is liberal or conservative?

Firstly, the above mentioned link will indicate whether the representative is republican (R) or democratic (D). Secondly, when you go to his/her website, there will usually be a link called "Issues" or "Issues and Views". Going there, you can discern his/her views on the topics that relate (or are perceived to be related) to HR 5680, e.g.: Human rights, International Affairs, War on terror and national security, etc.

It would be most convenient for me to sent my letter online. Can I do that?

Yes! Go to www.house.gov/writerep , choose your state, enter your 5-digit zip code, and click on "Contact My Representative". You will see both an online form into which you can paste your letter, as well as a postal mail address for the representative if you prefer to mail out the letter by post.

In any case let others know that you have accomplished your civic duty or the responses you got so that others can follow your exemplary action. Please leave your comment below.

Please note: If you are sending the letter online, you may not be able to attach documentation. However, you can provide links to international media articles that pertain to the repression in Ethiopia. Such links may be found by identifying appropriate articles from Ethioindex. EACA is in the process of compiling the most compelling and relevant international documents and articles that are in the public sphere. This task is not yet completed, but once it is, the compilation will be made available on the web for anyone to use).

Re: Please vote "Yes" to HR 5680, a bill supporting freedom in Ethiopia!

Dear Congressman Van Hollen,

As an American residing in your constituency, I have observed and admired your unwavering commitment to democracy, freedom, and human rights, at home and abroad. It is for this reason that I am writing to urge you to Vote “Yes” on HR 5680. This bill, called ‘The Ethiopia Freedom, Democracy and Human Rights Advancement Act of 2006’, is expected to go to the floor of the House of Representatives likely this month. HR 5680, which passed the House International Relations Committee with unanimous and bi-partisan support, is a strong and powerful _expression of true American values: If passed, it would promote human rights and democracy in Ethiopia.

As an American of Ethiopian descent, I am distressed by the overt brutality and open disdain of basic human rights which the regime controlled by Prime Minister Meles Zenawi has displayed, most bluntly since May 2005. The wording of HR 5680 makes this clear. Over 40,000 people, arbitrarily swept from the streets during pro-democracy demonstrations, have been detained and many tortured in malaria-infested military camps. The entire opposition party leadership, along with NGO workers, human rights defenders, and journalists are now in prison and face ridiculous charges of treason and attempted genocide that can carry the death penalty. All this and more is well documented by Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, the US Department of State, and the international media. Please see the attached documentation. This internal violence and instability is starting to destabilize the entire Horn of Africa, with a possible outbreak of war between Ethiopia on the one hand, and both Eritrea and Somalia on the other.

Ethiopia is perhaps the starkest and strongest manifestation of a statement I strongly believe in: The path to national and international security ultimately passes through the promotion of freedom and democratic rights in other countries. Security cannot be won – and in fact will be heavily compromised, as we see in Ethiopia! – by supporting dictators which put on a sham façade of being an “ally” on the war on terror. In this spirit, I am hopeful and confident that you will stand with your fellow congressmen and women of the House International Relations Committee who passed HR 5680 unanimously.

Sincerely,

Hewan Zerfu

Re: Please vote “Yes” to HR 5680, a bill supporting freedom in Ethiopia!

Dear Congressman Gutknecht,

As an American residing in your constituency, I have admired your unwavering commitment to values that President Bush and our administration holds dear: the values of democracy, freedom, and a free private enterprise. It is for this reason that I am writing to urge you to Vote “Yes” on HR 5680. This bill, called ‘The Ethiopia Freedom, Democracy and Human Rights Advancement Act of 2006’, is expected to go to the floor of the House of Representatives in September. HR 5680 was initiated by Congressman Chris Smith (R-NJ), and last month passed the House International Relations Committee with unanimous and bi-partisan support. This bill is a strong and powerful _expression of true American values: If it becomes law, it would promote democracy and economic and political freedom in Ethiopia.

As an American of Ethiopian descent, I am deeply disturbed by the overt brutality and open disdain of basic human rights which the Marxist-oriented Ethiopian regime under Prime Minister Meles Zenawi has displayed, most bluntly since May 2005. The wording of HR 5680 makes this very clear. Over 40,000 people, arbitrarily swept from the streets during pro-freedom demonstrations, have been detained in malaria-infested military camps. The entire pro-Western opposition party leadership faces ridiculous charges of treason and attempted genocide that may carry the death penalty. All this and more is well documented by the US Department of State and the international media. Please see the attached documentation. This internal violence and instability is starting to destabilize the entire Horn of Africa, with a possible outbreak of war between Ethiopia on the one hand, and both Eritrea and Somalia on the other.

Ethiopia is perhaps the starkest and strongest manifestation of a statement I strongly believe in which President Bush made in a speech at the National Defense University in March 2005: “Our strategy to keep the peace in the longer term is to help change the conditions that give rise to extremism and terror. […] To draw attention away from their social and economic failures, dictators place blame on other countries and other races, and stir the hatred that leads to violence. This status quo of despotism and anger cannot be ignored or appeased, kept in a box or bought off.” It is in this spirit that I deeply hope that you will vote Yes on HR 5680.

Sincerely,
