Ethiopia sentences five Mengistu officers to death

ADDIS ABABA, April 5 (Reuters) - An Ethiopian Court has sentenced to death five top military officers of former Marxist ruler Mengistu Haile Mariam, for air raids that killed hundreds in an open market in 1980.

The state-run Ethiopian News Agency on Saturday said the five officers were sentenced for the raid at Hawzen, along with five others given life sentences and four given terms of 19 years. All were tried and sentenced in absentia.

Ethiopian Air Force officers were accused of bombing Hawzen in the northern Tigray region, killing hundreds of civilians on a market day on June 23, 1980, prosecutors said.

Ethiopia has been trying former official of Mengistu's regime for the past 14 years for horrific killings carried out under his rule.

Most are in exile after rebels including the current prime minister, Meles Zenawi, overthrew him in 1991. Mengistu fled to Zimbabwe, where he lives in luxury under the protection of President Robert Mugabe.

The same court in January 2007 sentenced Mengistu to life in prison for killings thousands of people during his 17-year rule which included famine, war and purges including the "Red Terror" slaughter of suspected opponents.

Prosecutors have said his sentence was not commensurate with his crime and appealed for a death sentence in May. The court is expected to hear the appeal this year, but Mengistu is not likely to face justice. Those cameras captured one of the most horrible moments of Ethiopians. But there were no journalist there, nor America's spy satellites to take pcs.

First, I d like to say a horrible crime was committed that awful day. I am not only a victim of Derge, I literally grew up under the victimization of Derge. Whoever did what to achieve x,y, and z, I shed tears for those people who were masaccred that day. The sad part is how can those who flew the planes get a death sentence, while those who ordered the killing, the actual Derges get life sentence? :crazy:

Plus as some people mentioned in here, for me, everytime I see this kind of story it is very saddening. In one hand, I do want to see justice for past wrongs, but on the other, I am deeply troubled knowing what is happening there now. Especially, in the Ogaden. It is also sad Ethiopians can't celebrate together because of the divisions that were created by this hated "ethnic federalism" imposed upon us. I will never forget the day the Axum obelisk was returned. Which was a very grand historic moment for Ethiopians. I was watching our Eritrean Prime Minister and his wife at Bole airport awaiting the arrival. There was virtually no feelings within me. My head was telling me what the occasion was. An incredibly great day to which all Ethiopians should rejoice. But for me it was almost like watching Mubarak and his wife at Cairo airport, awaiting for the remains of Rameses II. His wife in full Tigrayan regalia. It was undeniable that they have taken such a great day for all Ethiopians, and turned it into a one region show. How can one forget what he said from the start. "Ye Axum hawlet, le Wolaytaw menu new."

In short, all I am saying is that we need justice for past wrongs. But we have to find ways to correct current wrongs too. We have to get rid of this ethnic federalism, and bring the Ethiopian people together.

If Mengistu was sentenced to life in prison, then how could the Air Force officers who were simply just taking orders be sentenced to death (unless there is evidence that they acted alone.

I was 4 months in Harrar prison and my oldest sister was gang raped inside the jail and died soon after being release from jail when she tried to abort her unwanted child conceived during the rape. We all have some scars but life goes on my friend. It was a time of total chaos and it was due not because of Mengusto but because of those Counter Revolutionary students from Western Europe. Till this day, I can hear her plight for mercy during the interrogation time in the middle of the night. All you could hear inside the jail is either the cry of the tortured students or those deranged people outside the jail.
