China's reluctance to delve into domestic affairs has raised concern internationally, but many African leaders are excited about the desperately-needed roads, hospitals, schools, stadiums and other major works projects that China is building.

Well Well Well. China is important not only to Ethiopia but also to the rest of Africa one can say. Do not forget India too. These two countries have created a new and historic opportunity for us to rise from the slumber that westerners carefully nursed us falling into. Yes China does not meddle in the internal affairs and at least they deserve credit for playing it obvious. China's role would be damaging if dictatorship is on strong hold, as it is the case in many African countries including Ethiopia. So can we blame Chinese while we are gutless to stand up and fight for our rights internally and form democratic institutions and culture? Big no.

Imagine if we succeeded in having a stable democratic political system with a growing economy. Then Chinese markets would stimulate production and export businesses in agriculture and other areas like mining. it is happening to a certain extent. I believe more can be done, far more even. In fact this very fact always makes me think that how foolish of woyanea to waste this opportunity to build a strong and prosperous nation by opening up the political, economic and diplomatic space rather than being soooooo scared of losing its grip on power. Woyanea can be a secured player if it opens up to democracy genuinely, not just staging it for western audience.

Unfortunately woyanea thinks the reverse:"I am minority and democracy never permits me to have control of power in Ethiopia!" The logical consequence of this dogmatic thinking is giving precedence to fear over love, suspicion over demonstrated trust. So let us not be fooled by Americans disguised self-aggrandizement and self-serving in the name of being a champion of democracy. It is all self-interest be it from China or the west. But the Chinese at least do not have the racial arrogance and hate. That is why we have to be dutiful in building the basic institutions of democracy from within counting Chinese as trade partners. This gives us a leverae to negotiate better with the west too.

A year or so back I was so much surprised how much media frenzy was shown regarding the rise of India and China in Europe. Even Europeans sat down with Chinese to discuss the Chinese relation with Africa. Mind you they did not invite any of the African nations. It seems we, in Africa, have not realized how massive an opportunity it is that the rise of India and China have created for us.

So let us help ourselves out and no one come and die for us!!!

Whoelse is willing to take risque of investing in a country where investors are always aboused? in the other hand, if we have capblity of doing things our selves we shouldn't need no bodys help, lack of professionals and the way our system deal with professional is what led the country to the possition where we always need a baby sitter for every thing we want to do.
Good to give a chance to whatever professionals we currently have to do the job, not only the job but upgrading the technology its self is some other roll the country should play, China will catch a fish and feed us but will never show us how to catch a fish, if we value our own people way is too short to success but look at what happened during the year 1991 to 2000, when Ethiopia lost thousands of professionals, UNICEF and some other UNDP branches were more than happy to such a ready mind, these professionals absolutly lost nothing but the country of course did, since the government does not really care.

Obviously, the increased involvement of China in Africa, though motivated by self-interest, should be welcomed for the simple reason that the West, which has take Africa for granted, has now to compete for African goods and sevices. However, China, being essentially an authoritarian society, can only influence Africa towards the direction most Africans would find unacceptable. Particularly in terms of good governance and democracy, China could only help in propagating authoritarian regimes such as those in Sudan and become a reactionary influence in Africa's development.:no:

Ethios and of course the rest Africa for that matter, has to weigh out all the pros and cons when dealing with the issues of international economic relations. A good tree bears good fruits, means “good results.” Result should be used as a critical measuring instrument.

China has never made a secret of its intentions as she joined in hands with Africa. China has clearly said: it is a “mutual benefit.”

A sisterly, bilateral cooperation that takes care of the interests of both partners. Is it any new in international relation affairs ?

Every country has its own national interests. Definitely, China is no different in this regard. China seeks strategic market and raw material security for its booming economy. Well, Africa undoubtedly offers an extremely huge potential from that point of view.

The Chinese are smart enough to detect that potential early enough and work on it with an enormous commitment. As the Westerners waked up and peered at what china is doing in Africa (a continent they relentlessly exploited, abused and neglected for centuries) it was already to late.
Indeed, China is actually changing the face of Africa in every aspect. This is the last opportunity for all African countries to rise up from the darkness of colonial and neo-colonial heritage. If Africa fails to grasp this last God-given-golden chance, there shall never be any other more to come.

Africa, it is your time !

Desparatly poor countries like Ethiopia have to do anything to attract anybodies investment in mining, roads and raiways etc. But, ofcourse, non in the intermidiate sector like shops and hotels. There are many Ethiopians who can do that better. Look at the Tanzam Railway, which conects Tanzania with Zambia. It was built by China as a development aid. Look what they have built at Tekeze, it will provide electricity beyond Ethiopia. Besides Chinese investment will temper the arrogancy of the west.

Something to be born in mind while discussing the Sino- Africa partnership issue is the question of global players.
Since the collapse of the Soviet Union the world power balance has shifted almost absolutely to the western side. That is very bad for the non-industrial countries, Africa in particular. Absolute power concentration on the West Side does a great harm to the so called third world. Multipolar Power houses do better. You’ll have a choice, an alternative direction. The West treats the rest of the world like something half colonialism. “I Master- you slave” type game. The end result is very clear. The creation of the so called:
Rich countries
Poor countries
It gives an impression as if we’re living in two different planets, separated at million light years apart.
The trend, seen from today’s perspective, is extremely alarming. The West gets richer …..richer, Africans the contrary way. Poorer, ….poorer.

Unfortunately, this continuous tendency is regarded by the Westerners as something normal, something predetermined by the nature. This view constitutes the core of all African –West relation problems.
The bigotry, the denial of mutual respect und equal partnership.

This problem is actually not only with Africa. The same happens with Latin America too, though at a lesser extent compared with the black continent Africa. Many South American countries are forming new fronts against the unfair Western approach to their respective nations. See Venezuela, Cuba, Bolivia, even Brazil and Argentina.

China, India and the like on the other hand might offer better alternatives. Obviously, these nations have no such nasty history of hegemony and presumptuousness to be blamed on.

Absolutely. China is great for Africa for the following reasons.
1 - No colonial baggage.
2 - The relationship is purely based on interest. As in any negotiation it's give and take, whereas the west and africa have a complicated slave/master relationship. NPR, a government radio run by American taxpayers is working for the interest of American government and they absolutely don't want to see China succeed in Africa. As Bushy said, they are America's strategic competitor. Be ready for more China bashing in the west.

But Africans are in love with China, from Algeria to Zimbabwe, China is here to stay. They have done far more in Ethiopia and elsewhere than the white man has done in 300 years.

The chines people, like any other nations of this world have their own unique tradition, language, culture and manners. You may be expecting from them a broad smile, all teeth gum flying out, like what one is used to experience from the westerners culture.

The chines one is another culture, another social conduct. And it is a duty of every civilized Ethiopian/African to recognize the differences, to respect the cultures and specific behaviors of other nationalities as they are, as far as their actions and deeds do not constitute any breach of law.

It is also possible that some time, some conflict between Ethiopians or any one from the rest Africa may erupt. This is also normal. It can definitely happen. The most important thing is that we should not have to overreact or exaggerate it.
Even in every family, every house of our own homes we do experience sometimes to many untold conflicts, let alone with an alien culture that we do not have enough familiarity. It takes wisdom to balance things cautiously and cleverly.

Personally, I don’t think that Ethiopians have any problem with foreigners. Ethiopians enjpy a very high reputation for their hospitality.

It is a very good talking point. I belive that rather saying China is good or not good for Ethiopia, it would probably make sense to ask if Ethiopia is handling china in a good way or not. Most of these countries only care for their own national interest. They don't care about Ethiopia. It is upto us, Ethiopians to be prudent and analyze every relationship and work it towards our national interest. I think we are not getting our fair share in our relationship. If fare benefits are shared among the two yes China will be good for Ethiopia and Ethiopia will be very good for China.

In the absence of wise leadership in Ethiopia the relationship with China will end up only benefiting China. Are we Ethiopians now good for Ethiopia? Ethiopia has never utilized its own human resources yet for so many reasons. Ethnicity, dictatorship, insecurity, disunity, lack of identity, are the sickness of Ethiopians today.

Even the United States is counting on China today for its economic survival where money is borrowed from China every day every small and big stores sell only Chines products all over the United States. But The US have citizens who will defend for their country if any bad thing can happen with the relationship. Ethiopia don't have that.
Haile Selassie was benefiting from both East and West by balancing his approach without compromising his countries interest and national integrity. With leaders like Meles who gives little attention to national interest of his nation (such ridiculous behavior as giving away a sea port or giving away fertile territory to neighboring countries) one can be cautious if playing game with Chines benefit any thing for Ethiopia.

1. In the last five years China and India invested in Africa more than what the west has invested in Africa in a 100 years.
2. The number of African students at this moment doing their graduate studies in India is more than the cummunlative number of African students received MSC and PHD in Europe and USA after the second world war. Imagine, also these students (also the outstanding ones) will return to Africa. They will not be stolen from Africa under the disguise of poletical refugie, job offer, liberation organization or any other western so called Dimocracy crab.
3. Since the advent of China-Africa, India-Africa forums the so called free and self serving western media started unleashing its dirty propoganda that China and India are not good for Africa. 4. Please ask the west why the relationship with them is rather good for Africa in stead of why our relation with the East is bad.

We here Western news broadcasts , we are colonised by westerner music, theater, films, etcetra, etcertra. No wonder that some people in this debate come out to throw trashes at the well meant Sino-African cooperation ventures. The colonisation syndrome is part of our nerval blood system, that will undoubtedly take a very long time to get rid of it. But time will make a change possible.
Those guys who say chinese investement and infrastructure building is not helpful, should then come forward and do that job by them selves or suggest better practical concepts how to do the job.
Would you try dragging Europeans at hands and force them to invest in the so stigmatised Africa called „dark continent“ by the european ?
You may say, we do it only our selves. We don’t need cooperation with any another country. This is another absurd non-practical stance too. If the allied powers didn’t cooperate during the disasterous WWII, the satanic ideology of A.Hitler would have turned the planet earth into the hell of an eternal abysm. England alone couldn’t do it alone. The cooperation of USA, Canada, USSR, France was indispensable to defeat the evil.
Africa also has its own war to win. That is, poverty and all ill that follws it. The most effective way to combate poverty would be an industrial revolution. Industrial development is the way forward to defeat poverty. And that in turn requires a precondition: Infrastructure build-up.
China is willing to assist in building the basic infractures Africa badly needs.
The West is extremely afraid of the blood-boiling African sun heat. Afraid of sharply stinging mosquitos, afraid of HIV-ADIS, afraid of poor hyginic standards of african towns and cities, scary of a day-to-day contact with black population, scary of any investment capital loss in the desert black Africa. Communication, transporation system is bad. There is a war. Life standard is too low …. and so on.
[[The west as usual likes the comfortable remote control of African raw materials and mineral resources at cheapest market exchanges. ]]

China takes the risk.
China dares to tackle all depressing hardships.
China is cooperative. The people’s Republic of China is human.

China is in Africa because Africa is looking for a cheap way out of misery but also because China desperately needs Africa's raw materials to keep fuelling all that is happening in China.
It is a give and take situation. China will go as far as supplying arms against the people in Darfur in order to support their booming economy.
