Ethiopia - World Bank approves USD 540mln for basic services delivery
The World Bank disclosed Thursday that its board of executive directors had approved USD 540 million in International Development Association (IDA) funding for the protection of basic services (PBS) program phase II project for Ethiopia.
Since 2006, PBS has complemented government resources to improve the decentralized delivery of basic services in five sectors: education, health, agriculture, water and sanitation, and rural roads. In the second 3-year phase, 2009-2011, the government of Ethiopia is expected to allocate approximately USD 700 million equivalent a year, while 12 donor partners, including the IDA, plan to provide an additional USD 400 million or so a year.

Ethiopia - Minister sacks Airport Enterprise chief

Ethiopia's Transport and Communications Minister Deribew Kuma sacked the general manager of the Ethiopian Airport Enterprise on Monday, it was learnt.
Eyob Estifanos was relieved from his post on his way back from Dubai after attending a Middle East Infrastructure Summit held there last week.
The manager was relieved of his responsibilities in a letter dated May 11 and signed by the Communication and Transport Minster Deribew Kuma.

Ethiopia - CRBC takes over MIDROC’s 200mln road project

The Addis Ababa Roads Authority Thursday awarded the Megenagna-Ayat road construction project to the Chinese construction company, CRBC Addis Engineering. This project was snatched from MIDROC Ethiopia Construction, a company owned by Sheik Mohammed Hussein Alamoudi, after it failed to execute the work on other projects according to schedule. The one-way Megenagna-Ayat road is 8.2 km long.

The Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) was scheduled to convoke an extraordinary general assembly meeting today with mixed feelings at Hilton Addis to decide on a “motion of dismissal” of the president, which was put in place in FIFA’s road map. Now the floor seems open to all delegated stakeholders in the football community to cast their votes showing respect to the road map in a bid to close the two-year gloomy chapter.
Though disagreements were observed on registration process early on Friday between the Ministry of Youth and Sports staff and federation president Dr. Ashebir Woldegiorgis, this meeting seems to be conducted in peaceful situation.

Ethiopia's opposition party UDJ to hold meeting at Meskel Square
Ethiopia's opposition party, Unity for Democracy and Justice (UDJ), yesterday called for a public meeting at Meskel Square on May 31, Addis Ababa based Reporter writes.
Vice-president and head of public relations of the party Dr. Hailu Araya was quoted by Reporter as saying that as the party's attempt to lease halls to hold a meeting it had planned was unsuccessful as a result of a deliberate act of the Addis Ababa City Administration, it was compelled to conduct the meeting at Meskel Square.
Originally, the party had chosen May 23 as the date to hold the meeting in the auditorium of Ethiopia Electric Power Corporation (EEPCo).

Ethiopia - Santa Clara Police still looking for hit-and-run driver

Santa Clara Police are looking for the driver and vehicle that apparently hit and killed a pedestrian on El Camino Real late Friday or early Saturday morning.
The victim was tentatively identified as Yemane Kidane Hadgue, 27. He was carrying identification indicating that he was from Ethiopia, police said. Relatives living in Colorado indicated that he had not been living in this area, according to police.
Santa Clara police will put up a message board at McCormick and El Camino, which has a crosswalk but no signal, seeking witnesses to the recent collision. The collision may have caused a broken windshield or front-end damage to the vehicle, Kazem said. Anyone with information may call investigator Earl Amos at 408-615-4764 or 408-640-7376.
