Teff Ethiopia;s Staple Crop

Ethiopia - Teff gaining popularity as animal feed in America

Teff, Ethiopia's staple crop, is gaining popularity as animal feed in the United States. Michigan State University (MSU) is having an open house this week to show off the crop. Teff which is used to make injera, the spongy bread used in Ethiopia, is increasingly expensive in Ethiopia. You can read about MSU's open house here.

An article about Teff by University of Nebraska says, "Compared to these other grasses, teff is much leafier and finer stemmed, and often contains more crude protein and TDN. However, it usually doesn’t produce quite as much tonnage. Teff makes a very palatable hay and is well accepted by horses, llamas, alpacas, and similar livestock. Recently weaned calves also adapt to teff hay quite quickly. Teff may be better suited to these uses than our other summer annual grasse. "

Ethiopia in need of more aid - UN

Addis Ababa
- More than six million Ethiopians could soon need food aid due to poor rains in some parts of the country over the last three years, the UN humanitarian affairs office said on Monday.

Currently 4,9 million Ethiopians receive food aid, but the figure could rise to 6,2 million, the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said in a statement.

A current relief food shortfall of 176 000 metric tonnes is also expected to rise to 390 000 tonnes, it added.

"Because of the existing shortfall, only three of the six planned rounds of food allocations have been distributed to date," it said.

Geologists, geophysicists say volcanic eruption causes surface displacement in Ethiopia

ENA -
A team of geologists and geophysicists dispatched to Afar region in northeast Ethiopia, where volcanic eruption took place recently, confirmed that the eruption caused surface displacement in the area.

The eruption has recently occurred in the Karbahi locality about 65-kms northwest of Semera, capital of Afar regional state.

Earth Scientists drawn from Institute of Geophysics, Space Sciences and Astronomy (IGSSA), Department of Earth Sciences of the Addis Ababa University, Geological Survey of Ethiopia, Mines and Water Bureau of the Afar Regional State as well as the universities of Cambridge and Oxford told ENA over the weekend that the volcanic eruption, which occurred on June 29th, 2009, was emitted from about 4.5-kms long crack.

According to them, the current eruption occurred on the same place affected by a 60-km long and 2-meter wide dyke that was intruded in 2005, extending from Dabbahu to Harraro area.

With the expectation of more volcanic events in the region, Dabbahu-Manda-Hararo is one of the most active areas on the planet right now, they said.

Dr. Elias Lewi at IGSSA of Addis Ababa University said that there were a number of magmatic movements in the area since 2005. However, most of them remained beneath the surface of the earth, he said, adding that the recent one is the fourth eruption in Ethiopia since 2005.

Dr. Gezahegn Yirgu of the Department of Earth Sciences from Addis Ababa University mentioned that the eruption was a continuation of the magmatic/ dyking event that started to occur some four years ago.

The recent molten rock emitted from the eruption covers an area of about 4.5 square kilometers and has also created small hills elevated about 30 to 40 meters high.

Dr. Tesfaye Kidane from the Department of Earth Sciences on his part said that the lava has overflowed from the fissure that measures about 5-kms long and surface displacement or faulting occurred in the vicinity following the eruption.

The Earth Scientists from the Department of Earth Sciences and IGSSA of AAU further said that bigger eruptions and earth quakes are expected to happen in the next few years.

They also urged responsible bodies in the region to consider these active earth phenomena and associated hazards in any of the development activities being undertaken in the area.

The Market Maker: Introduction

PBS

Eleni Gabre-Madhin is a woman with a dream. The charismatic Ethiopian economist wants to end hunger in her famine-plagued country. But rather than relying on foreign aid or new agricultural technology, she has a truly radical plan. She has designed the nation’s first commodities exchange, which she hopes will revolutionize an ancient market system whose inefficiencies have been partly responsible for the country’s persistent food shortages.

In April 2008 and after more than a decade of planning, the starting bell rang on the trading floor for the first time. Gabre-Madhin has been running frantically ever since. She attempts to maintain the machinery that keeps her country fed while facing powerful special interests, antiquated farming practices, poor infrastructure, and an unpredictable climate. Not to mention a global economic crisis.

Ethiopia - Fingerprint Collection Begins in Addis

By MERGA YONAS

The Revenue and Customs Authority (RCuA) has collected about 6,600 taxpayers' fingerprints in the first week of the about 70 million Br worth National Identification System (NIS) Project, launched early last week under the first round of this project and financed by the World Bank, plans to collect fingerprints from over 1.6 million people in Addis Abeba.

The project consultant that signed a contract agreement with RCuA in October 2008, Copycat Ethiopia I.T. Plc, has deployed 150 of its employees who, using the mobile registration units, collect the fingerprints that will be transferred to the RCuA's central database from every collection centre across Addis Abeba. The first person to have his fingerprints stored in the system last Tuesday is Melaku Fenta, director general of the Authority.
