Stunning Model and reigning Ethiopian Miss Millennium Queen: Kidan Tesfahun has won Best Female Model of the World 2009 at a contest held in Alicante Spain on 24th July 2009, organized by Sukier Models International
24 year old Model Kidan who stands 1.8 meters tall was crowned as Ethiopia's Miss Millennium Queen in 2007, and had previously represented Ethiopia at top Grand slam beauty pageants like Miss International 2008 and Miss Earth 2007 but has always personally favored modeling, “I Love to model how ever it is a pity that the modeling industry is not professional or well established back home, so aspiring models like my self cannot make a living out of want we like to do” she said in an interview.
"Man proposes but God disposes" was also her philosophical approach the contest; it was her first trip to Europe after having previously traveled to: Manila the Philippines, Beijing China, Tokyo Japan, Brazzaville Congo and Libreville Gabon as part of her duties as Miss Millennium Queen of Ethiopia
With this win she gets a modeling contract with a European modeling agency and full representation in Europe she will also have the opportunity to model the world over.
Plans are already under way to feature her in several Fashion weeks and other Global fashion shows next year in Greece, Italy and across Europe.
"From here on I guess the sky is the limit for me, I have gained the professional acceptance I always knew I should have, and I am indeed grateful to the Almighty Lord for guiding me and making my dreams come true" she concluded.

Ethiopian charged with stealing cameras, phones

An Ethiopian residing at the Hal Far tent city in Malta this afternoon pleaded not guilty to stealing two digital cameras and two mobile phones from the night club Havana in Paceville.
The man, Samson Tarku, 22, was denied bail.

Ethiopia - Researcher Studies Solar Cell Efficiency
CARBONDALE, Ill.-- A Southern Illinois University researcher's work has earned him a prestigious grant from the federal government.
Mesfin Tsige, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the College of Science, recently earned the National Science Foundation's CAREER grant. Tsige will use the $432,000 grant to continue studying new materials that could make solar power more efficient.

Ethiopia - Chief calls on public to strengthen natural resource conservation

Ethiopia's Amhara state chief, Ayalew Gobeze called up on the public to further strengthen natural resource conservation activities to maintain the availability of surface and ground water resource across the state.
Opening the 2nd national forum of water services in Bahir Dar town , the chief said on Friday that there is need to tackle negative impacts on surface and ground water resources.
The chief urged the public to strengthen activities on forest development so as to preserve the environment and maintain the resources.
He said the regional government is working on the issues to tackle the effects of environmental degradation.
State water resource bureau head, Mamaru Tsidku urged stakeholders to intensify activities to preserve the resources.
According to the head, the state has been undertaking sustainable water supply projects in 44 towns
Nigerian delegation describes Ethiopia exemplary in organizing traditional miners

Ethiopia can be exemplary to other African nations in organizing and legalizing of traditional miners, Nigerian Arti-sanal and small-scale mining department director, Oc. Azubike said.
A 16 member delegation comprising professionals from Nigerian Ministry of Mines and Steel Development visited traditional mining production and marketing system in Oromia State with a view to sharing experience.
After the visit the director told ENA that his country is keen to draw Ethiopia's effort of installing uniform and strengthened working system to develop the mining sector.
The director, who is also head of the delegation, said he found necessary to draw experience from Ethiopia to organize traditional miners in his homeland.
Dr. Ihuom B. Ikeh, Environment Compliance Department Director, said Ethiopian mining production has taken into account safety of environment.
The director appreciated Ethiopia's effort of replenishing mining areas.
The delegation visited activities of traditional miners in Guji Zone, Tamirat Mojo, traditional and small-scale mines work process owner with Ethiopian Ministry of Mines and Energy said.
The delegation also visited Ethiopian mines development Enterprise in Adola area, he added.
Another Nigerian delegation is expected to arrive here to make a similar visit.
Ethiopia striving to reduce poverty: Japanese ambassador

Japanese ambassador to Ethiopia Kinichi Komano said Ethiopia is a country striving to reduce poverty.
Ambassador Komano said in an exclusive interview with ENA that the budget allocated by the House of Peoples' Representatives indicated that the country has given prime attention to poverty reduction.
He said 70 per cent of the budget approved by the parliament for poverty reduction indicated commitment of the country to bring about rapid development and reduce poverty.
The country will register rapid development as implementation of development strategies of the country is on the right track, the ambassador said.
The economic growth registered in the country is a result of concerted efforts of the public and the government of Ethiopia.
The ambassador expressed readiness of Japan to support Ethiopia in its efforts to speed up development and reduce poverty.
Japan's support to Ethiopia has reached 70 million USD last year. The amount exceeded by 30 per cent that of the previous year.
The assistance is in the areas of water resource and agriculture development, and also expansion of education sector.
The country will achieve its goal to become one of the countries with middle income if its economic growth further continues, the ambassdor added.

Ethiopia's Addis Ababa University on Saturday graduated more than 2000 graduates trained in undergraduate program.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony university's Academic Vice President Dr. Tekalegn Woldemariam said the university will launch improved working system and organization to render efficient service.
Since its inception 57 years before, Dr. Tekalgne said, the University has been graduating a number of trainees in various fields.
The present graduates are trained in fields of social and natural sciences as well as medical science.
Handing over awards to outstanding graduates Professor Emeritus Ermias Dagne urged the graduates to serve the public diligently
Prof. Ermias stressed significance of information communication technology and improved working system to help graduates improve their skill.
Ethiopia - Gondar University graduates over 3400 students

Gondar, Ethiopia - Gondar University in Ethiopia on Saturday graduated over 3400 students trained in regular and continuous programs.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony, university president Dr. Mengesha Admasu said 19 of the graduates received training in postgraduate program. Some 46 others graduated from medical faculty as general practitioners.
The president said percentage of the total female students in university has reached 20 percent. Some 697 of this year's graduates are females.
The university has been building capacity to enroll more students and attain quality of education. It is making preparation to open education and agriculture faculties in the coming academic year.
Dr. Mengesha said the university has launched implementation of Business Process Reengineering to attain quality of education and deliver efficient service.
Handing over awards to outstanding graduates, Addis Ababa University President, Professor Andreas Eshete said the growth in number of higher learning institutions will contribute a lot to speed up the ongoing development endeavors of the nation.
He urged the graduates to contribute in the ongoing efforts to speed up development in the country.
Meles says Ethiopia striving to produce competent defense force

The Ethiopian Defense Command and Staff College (EDCSC) here on Saturday graduated 38 senior military officers with degrees. The officers received training in various military science fields over the past two years.
Speaking at the occasion, Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said the government is making efforts to produce efficient military officers , who are skillful and accustomed to modern technologies, without affecting national programs towards poverty alleviation.
The premier said the country has to build up strong defense force which is capable to resolve or deter any aggression against the sovereignty of the nation, as the country is located in a region where instability prevails.
Some anti-peace foreign forces and the government of Eritrea still continue in their desperate hope of obscuring Ethiopia from its development effort and destabilize the region.
Thus, Meles said the country is making utmost effort to produce highly trained military officers in various military academic institutions.
Meles noted that what matters to any robust army is not the quantity of weapons it has equipped with but the quality and competence of human force it has recruited.
He said the nation has already recognized the fact that strong economic capability would lay foundation for strong military force.
According to Brigadier General Negash Dagnew, commandant of the college, the officers have been trained in various military science courses including military command, plan and strategy and military operations.
He said the college has already prepared new curriculum on strategic plan and military operations in association with two military colleges in the United States.

Ethiopia - ETC says GPRS service now operational
The Ethiopian Telecommunications Corporation on Thursday said that it had now begun offering GPRS services to its mobile clients.
Clients can now access their e-mails, download and upload various file formats from and to their mobile phones, a statement from the corporation said.
“Organizations that want to track the location of their transport vehicles that constantly move to and from the regions, can now attach a GPS system a GPRS Sim card and follow the movement of their vehicles,” ETC said.

Ethiopia - Political parties raise concern over draft campaign financing regulation
Opposition political parties yesterday raised their concern over the new draft regulation on campaign financing prepared by the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE).
The board and political parties yesterday held a one-day meeting to discuss the draft regulation. The board has prepared a formula for the distribution of financial support to the parties.
However, a number of opposition parties took objection to the new sub-article added under Article 17 of the regulation which provides that if a political party boycotts an election for its own reasons it is obliged to pay back the money given to it from the state coffer. They said that the previous Article 17 of the regulation had only six sub-articles and that the new sub-article 17.7 imposed a strict obligation on the political parties to reimburse the money they take.

Ethiopia - Eyesus-Work to run for national chamber presidency
The Addis Ababa Chamber of Commerce and Sectoral Associations (AACCSA) board of directors has nominated its president, Eyesus Work Zafu, to run for the presidential election of the national chamber, the city chamber said.
In an extra-ordinary meeting it held on Friday, the board unanimously endorsed the nomination of Eyesus-Work to stand for the presidency of the Ethiopian Chamber of Commerce and Sectoral Associations (ECCSA).

WFP faces food shortage amounting to USD 171mln in Ethiopia
The World Food Programme announced Thursday that to meet all of its commitments in 2009 in Ethiopia, it requires a total of 744,000 metric tons of food.
WFP country director Mr. Mohammed Diab said, “all of our programmes in this country [Ethiopia] are under stress right now, with the total shortfall currently standing at more than 199,000 metric tons of food, worth USD 171 million.”
The relief component alone, which delivers emergency assistance to the most vulnerable groups, is already short of more than USD 95 million and recent assessments indicate the number of beneficiaries will grow from the current 4.9 million to 6.2 million, WFP said.
Mr. Diab said that in Ethiopia needs are increasing and WFP resources are facing significant shortfalls.

Ethiopia - Growing differences in UDJ threatening a split
Since members of Ethiopia's opposition party, Unity for Democracy and Justice (UDJ) Party, engaged in verbal fighting some two weeks ago, differences between the executive committee and the suspended members of the national council are widening in an alarming situation. Members and supporters this time around are feeling that the disparity in the party has reached its turning point and is leading to disintegration.
At its meeting held last week the national council of the party referred cases of the suspended members, who were accused of distributing “defamatory document” against the executive committee, to the disciplinary committee for investigation.

Ethiopia Oil import bills fall by 1.3bln birr
Oil import bills for the just-ended Ethiopian fiscal year dropped by 1.3 billion birr against that of the previous fiscal year, thereby helping the widening trade deficit to slightly narrow down during the review fiscal year, it was learnt.
Owing to a spike in world oil prices during the previous fiscal year ended June 7, 2008, the country's oil import was able to reach a record high of over 15.5 billion birr, surpassing export incomes for the same period and for the first time in the country's history.

Ethiopia, Kuwait sign air transport accord
The Ethiopian and Kuwaiti governments signed on Tuesday a memorandum of understanding (MoU) which would enable the two countries to strengthen the air transport cooperation between the two countries.
According to the public relations department with the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), the air transport agreement increase the twice-weekly flights between the two countries to seven flights per week.

Ethiopia - Malaysia's Petronas to to drill first well in Ogaden
The Malaysian oil and gas giant, Petronas, is to start drilling the first exploration well in Ethiopia's Ogaden basin, according to a report by Addis Ababa based weekly, The Reporter.
According to the report, Petronas has hired a Dubai-based company to drill exploration wells in the Genale block, block 11 and 15. Sources said Weather Ford is mobilizing its crew and drilling rigs.
