Ethiopia Appeals For Emergency Food Aid With 6.2 Million People Starving

ADDIS ABABA —
Twenty-five years after Ethiopia's famine killed a million people and spurred a massive global aid effort, the government appealed on Thursday for help for more than six million facing starvation.

State Minister for Agriculture Mitiku Kassa said the country needed 159,000 tonnes of food aid worth 121 million dollars between now and year's end for 6.2 million people.

He said nearly 80,000 children under five were suffering from acute malnutrition and that nine million dollars were required for moderately malnourished children and women.

"Since... January, the country continues to face several humanitarian challenges in food and livelihood security, health, nutrition, and in water and sanitation," Mitiku told donors.

In a report to mark the 25th anniversary since the famine, Oxfam called for a change of strategy towards the human suffering in Ethiopia, Africa's second most populous country after Nigeria.

It urged donors to focus on helping communities devise ways of preparing and dealing with disasters such as building dams to collect rain water to be used during dry seasons rather that sending emergency relief.

The long-term strategies receive less than one percent of international aid, Oxfam said.

"Sending food aid does save lives, the dominance of this approach fails to offer long-term solutions which would break these cyclical and chronic crises," said the report: "Band Aids and Beyond."

"We cannot make the rains come, but there is much more that we can do to break the cycle of drought-driven disaster in Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa," Oxfam director Penny Laurence said.

"Food aid offers temporary relief and has kept people alive in countless situations, but does not tackle the underlying causes that continue to make people vulnerable to disaster year-after-year."

Of 3.2 billion dollars of US aid to Ethiopia since 1991, 94 percent is food which is delivered there rather than grown locally or imported from the region, said the aid group.

25 Years after The Great Famine Ethiopia languishes again

This week marks the 25th anniversary of the Great Famine of Ethiopia, which claimed more than a million people in Ethiopia and present-day Eritrea, which was then a province of Ethiopia. The famine devastated the northern provinces of Ethiopia including Tigre, Eritrea and Wollo. This time, the crisis is mostly in the South and East of the country.

Twenty-five years later, Ethiopia is facing yet another famine and was a lead story on BBC World News on Thursday, October 22, 2009. The Ethiopian government is expected to make an emergency appeal for food aid later today, as it had many other times since it took power in 1991.

Despite the government's claim of double-digit economic growth, Ethiopia remains as one of the poorest countries in the World, and unable to feed itself.

According to government's own number, 6 million Ethiopians are at the verge of starvation, while aid agencies put the number much higher.

This is a pile of baloney, roomers and innuendoes spread only by the enemies of the new Ethiopia. Your days of looting and trading in the name of our unity are over. You can try to use our natural and personal challenges to reclaim your “glorious past” but never again shall we let a pack of village idiots preside over our future and the future of our children.

Okay Here we go again. The easiest thing to do now is to blame the government(hopefully many will do so). But this is not just failure of the government only. As people we've failed. the government is not sent from the heavens they are just part of the society. There is a saying that people get the government they deserve. People are so much dependent on the government hand out that many have lost their inner strength to work hard and provide for their families. even with such a hardship life they keep on breading in alarming numbers. In all of these the name 'Ethiopia' which once was grace for all black people is now a 'disrgrace' for all of africa. as people we have lost the respect of the entire world. here is what I think and pray should happen. 1. If the people who are leading the country have any self respect left in their head and admit that their economy policy is not working and that either they should leave the way for the young generation of learders or try a different economic policy approach. 2. Democracy comes with a lot of responsiblity. The government can't keep baby sitting irresponsible citizens. citizens should take charge of their life and their families. eg. number of children etc. 3. A national conference of leading minds of agricultural experts of the country to study and recommend strategies and also set up some sort of government body whose ONLY job is to make sure that the country is out of this cycle for once and for all. 4. Education - No body will pull us out of this humilation but ourselves through education and hard work. no aid organization no matter how many would get us out of this if not keep us in the cycle(read lords poverty). 5. Politics - petition the ethiopian people to ask the old generation of politicians(older than 50) not to hold any government positions. I believe this generation is lost in hate, corruption, deceit, immorality and greed. This is both from the government and the opposition. Instead invite younger generation of leaders especially those western educated to come in and take over. 5. Food habit......staples like teff should be supplemented with other types of drough resistant crops for the immediate future. the enset for example is one and part of the country that depends on this crop have rarely been heard of waiting government hand outs. 6. Higher Education .......strengthen agricultural studies, water studies, forestery etc and incentivise good students to go to these areas. just look at how many hydrologists and water technology specialists egypt has. thats how a society could survive in this competitive world. after all its survival of the fittesest. In summary the west is tired of feeding our people. Its high time that we start taking charge of our destiny and future. The people who are leading the country should take a deep look at them selves and ask a simple question. Am I a self respecting citizen? they have been in power for the last two decades. showered with a record number of aid, loan forgivness, new loans etc. so whatever economic policy they are experimenting some one should tell them that they are experimenting on people's lifes not laboratory rats. Or else as tracy chapman says 'poor people rise up and demand what is theirs'. May God bless the helpless people of ethiopia! ..........................................

This is absolutely horrifying. 25 years and yet the name Ethiopia comes with the word hunger followed by it. People blame the government and they are right, we are among the top aid receivers in the world and still face famine and hunger. All I can say is lord have mercy up on the children of Ethiopia. With the election coming and the food crisis spreading, one can only imagine how bad things could get in the coming year!!

When I asked what they thought of the Governement, no one was willing to tell me. Which lead me to believe, they are scared of there own government. And now they have nothing to eat. How could anyone be so mad? Sad!

The Right Way wrote,

Extraterrestrial,

“Stop your fabrication. Don’t mention Amharas or any other ethnic names here other than the Tigre Warlord savages who are busy in manipulating numbers and arguing that it is 6 not 9 million people who are starving. For them 6 million people starving and dying is not a problem.

This is where you see how this government’s cancerous greed and corruption and absence of morality has metastasized them to the point that they don’t care to let 6 or 9 million people dye of hanger and famine.

And this is not because of the inabilty of the country to produce food but it is because of the government controlling 100% of the land and they are busy selling it to foreigners to farm and export food while our people have no farming and are dying of hunger.

Right now Tigres are holding power since 1991 and they are destroying the country’s image, economy and ability to produce and sustain itself. Corruption is rampant starting from the head, Meles and his bodies and no intention to slow it down.

The game for Amhara, Oromo or any ethnic name-calling has been dead with believing Woyanes to bring democracy, wealth and dignity.

It is not up to you or me to say Amharas (although there has never been a government held just by ethnically identified and named Amharas) are better in governing than Tigres. It is already a proven fact. We know the difference then than now.

There has never been a never-ending starvation, beggary for food and money under any previous government that ruled Ethiopia until 1991.

Then with Woyane from then on hell broke loose on Ethiopia. “

I found The Right Way answered, balanced, intelligent, comprehensive and far from bitterness.

Nazret, you are doing really a good job by connecting us to the reality of our country. Hunger and Famine are the daily life for 80% of Ethiopians in 21st century when people are preparing to visit the planet Mars.

It is also irony saying 'Ethiopia ejochowen wedaseyma tezergalech' and also saying 'God less ethiopia' is also an insult to omnipotent God, God is cursing ethiopia, Ethiopia is hell on earth. As we pray to enter into heaven (after death), we need to do our best to disintegrate this hell-land so that we can live heavenly life on this mother earth. Country it is not laboratory try 19 years no result where is Meles him self promised that on 1995 on interview he said that ethiopian will eat per day three times. May be he said about for his family 3 times per day. It is very shame we TPLF leaders and supporters. Meles can talk but can not work, this a result of weak management. Z - MIKE said that Meles was doing rebuild ethiopia because of Derg and Issayas. Is it ethiopia made this problem with eritrea. TPLF agree and give eritrea for Issayas after that start war. Good NEWS for the fast & furios beast!

Crisis, crisis, endless crisis......No matter our station in life, we feel helpless against the onslaught of such events. We seemingly stand alone against the momentum of colorless modern history. Our very existence is now predicated upon the need for God's protection against unseen, and evolving evil forces.

They want us to kill each other, they want us to continue fighting against each other, starve ourselves both physically and spiritually, at home and abroad, online and offline -- until we are forced to surrender and assimilate as virtual slaves into the political, ideological and economic axis they want to deploy around the world.

The dark forces encourage pseudo-ethnic and religious upheavals among minorities creating a “global-zone of percolating violence,” leading to the break-up of our Homeland, into a mosaic of competing factions, and weakening the authority of the divine Ethiopian identity.

They persuade popular news medias, blogs etc. to wage a systematic war against everything what Ethiopia stands for. Due to the mischief of satanic trash, “Ethiopians” are even angering fellow Ethiopians by making provocative, blasphemes and irresponsible remarks on their national and Christian holidays. Instead, they act like the self-righteous left in grey, which lives in a simple black-and-white universe and thinks that it's cool to give equal opportunity even to those who are ready to annihilate it at an appropriate time and opportunity. As long as Christians could be effectively bashed, these modern-day liberals are there to show their willingness to smile coquettishly to the devil they don't know. The Devil no longer makes any secret of its purposes, it is now boldly rising up against God Himself."

At this period, the partisans of evil seems to be combining together, and to be struggling with united vehemence, led on or assisted by that strongly organized and widespread association called “Name it”. These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast.

I reckon, the so-called “Halloween” pagan festival is around the corner. Then, it shouldn't surprise us that the “Beast” comes out roaring to instruct its disciples to carry the unsuspecting victims away into the wilderness in the upfollowing festive season. Do you think it's by coincidence that, now, of all time, shortly before Christmas, “Hungry-Ethiopia” is again in the attention of World media, while half of the world's populations, including their beloved Afghans and Pakistanis are struck by a much worse humanitarian catastrophe than Ethiopia?

What will be surprising to many people is that the next devastation from alternating drought, fires, storms, floods and earthquakes, plus raging disease epidemics, will not occur primarily in India and Ethiopia, rather, these coming catastrophes will be striking the Anglo-American nations far more than ever before in history. Recent droughts and fires in Australia, California and other “rich” places are confirming this.

Well, I am positive that we in Ethiopia will prevail soon -- we will become stronger than those same-old mockers ever understand. The world is changing, but they still are unable to change.

Some of you might get angry with this, but it's a fact that for most rich Westerners it’s actually a comfort to know that someone, somewhere, is having a more miserable time than they are. Even when they give to charity, it’s only because it allows them to feel superior about where they live in the West. It's a shame that even some ex-Ethiopians do show the same “I am better” sentiment. Well, the moment we learn to recognize these evil parasites who are dancing on our ignorance and fears, they will wish they haven't tried to dehumanize us this way.

There is a say in Amharic "Yeabat lij wuha temaw" as long as we don't use our water the blue nile we always well be the jock for the world, while 85% of the Nile flows from Ethiopia but yet we are using -1% of the Nile.... This is sad. We see Egypt is feeding there people with our water but we are unable to use our Owen water.
When are we going to wake up and relize the potential of the Nile....
I strongly believe as long as we continued like this we will never feed our people.
If we have to fight to use the Nile "abay" we should fight like there is no tomorrow.
We the new generation should wake up and fight for our rights to use out water... If we have to fight for it, let's be it.
God help us and God bless Mama Ethiopia, Amen!

There is credible evidence that many important changes are taking place in Ethiopia because of what the EPRDF does. In fact, many development fundamentals are being undertaken throughout the country. Sustainable development is a long process and extremely complex. The threshold from where everything has to start is so low in our country. Even with all possible efforts, to initiate and sustain development is a Hercules task. What should not be confused is these changes are just beginning not complete processes. Ethiopia will face many challenges, including hunger and acute poverty for several years in the future. What is critical is relentless efforts and focused commitments to transform Ethiopia into the middle income countries in about a decade or so. The only thing that is not changing is the mindset of tribalism and hatemongering members of the Diaspora.

Nearly two decades after one of the world's most devastating famines in Africa, scientists are pointing a finger at pollution from industrial nations as one of the possible causes...

http://xrl.us/bft84o

The African killing fields; you heard all about the Ethiopian famine. Here's the story that President Reagan, relief groups, and the media didn't tell you...

http://xrl.us/bft8xt

What are the causes of world hunger? What must be done to overcome world hunger? Obviously, the Bible does not supply any direct answers to these deep questions. We may not look here for clear proposals or concrete strategies. The Bible (in this as in many matters) offers only impressionistic hints subject to varying configurations and interpretations. The role of the Bible in these questions is not to displace hard technical analysis or sober economic reasoning. But it may shake our ways of thinking and perhaps define things afresh for us in terms of human, historical, covenantal reality...

You wrote: - "You see the government could have stopped the famine if it wasn't for the explosion of population."

I have been saying that for so long; but idiots like Free ass and his sidekicks used to ridiculed me on this concept - that the sudden growth of the population vis-s-vis the limited resource for food is a major factor for this never ending cycle of famine.
The other problem to this crisis is the fact that young people leave their ancestral farming land to come to the major cities in search of easy job. The older parent that remain on their lands cannot produce as much as the young. Usually they produce just enough for their own consumption and a little more for them to barter for other basic necessities such as cooking oil, kerosene and soap etc..
The third problem is the fact that agriculture has remain archaic and no one is trying to introduce mechanic agriculture in those area where they farm our staple food such as lentil, maize, sorghum and so on..
But to the amazement of everyone, all kind of new machineries and fertilizer are used to the area where they cultivate flowers and other export agriculture

This is what you wrote:-"We were told by the regime..that the Ethiopia economy has been growing double digit for the last ten years".

Allow me to give you an analogy to your dilemma - In the USA at the present time they are saying that the recession is over and we are bouncing back to a robust economy but mind you that about 15% of the population are unemployed and they are facing a bleak future for another two or three years before jobs come back.

For me politicians and economists are full of shit and they don't know what they are talking - in those areas where there is no scientific proof to demonstrate that two and two is equal to four -people assume and predict and talk all kind of BS. Everything is left to the individual interpretation.

Nikita Khrushchev once wrote:-"Politicians promised to build a bridge where there is no river"

We are used to their small talks and their empty rhetoric to persuade us that things are all rosy

you wrote: -"I do remember what Meles promised when he came to power in 1991 :
1. No more news about war and noise of bullets,
2. The people will eat three meals a day.

Here is the answer to your questions
1. True we don't hear any bullets -the country is in relative peace. Therefore, what Meles promised - he delivered - there is no killings like Mengustu time

2. for your second question - Meles never, ever specify that all Ethiopians will eat 3 meals a day. My friends you have to learn to read between those lines, Meles was talking about his cronies and himself and those Oligarches of big cities and towns who feast on three sumptuous meals.

congratulations on your mastering the skill of counting 1 to 18. Keep it up you are almost at 20;D.
It is easy to site and talk sh!t. so lets do that.
some of the questions that could be answered are,
What does it take to level the fertile hills and pump the rivers to irrigate them or is that already done? Use dynamite and blow it up, turn it upside down like they do in the minning world. If you can make a road through a mountain, you can blow up a hill and bulldoze it.
what about creating reservoirs that collect seasonal rain?
what about resettling some of the people who are clinging to dry land?

I just wonder what is it about Ethiopia that we always want to beg ? Call me ignorant for this but what does Somalia have that we don't have? How about Eritera or afganistan .. And you never hear those countries beg for food. Or does it make a more interesting news to report about Ethiopia' s never ending starvation ? Do Ethiopians back home have the slightest idea how this hurts the counrty's image? We are so proud about not being colonized and not being made slave but we have become the dog of the world to which you throw your scape of food to. 122 million ? There are nearly a million Ethiopians living in the west . If each of us contribute a100 dollar we will be able to at least feed most of the people affected but the government wouldn't want to do anything with us becuse ... The focus is in the wrong place. I can't seem to find any connection between gdp and empty stomachs. Certainly gdp means nothing at all, we should erase that from ethiopia's vocabulary. The language should be "Food Security", for short, mid, and long term. What about addressing issues of rain failure, this is something that should be planned into the agenda. Africa is in a worst situation than it was during colonializm. At least people had food then.

I accuse Ethiopia.
God made you fertile and gave you so many rivers, nevertheless, your sons and daughter die of famine and thirst. You have failed to quench their thirst or fill the stomach of their hungry children. You are a heartless mother.
From your land came rulers that are deaf and blind, to the cry of the hungry children and the lamentation of mothers who have lost them due to famine. Your rulers are also so cynical that they try to feed the poor with numbers (double-digit growth). Millions of your children are at the verge of death while your rulers are fighting over numbers, whether six or thirteen million are hungry. You see it makes a lot of difference. Six million hungry people are statistically not as important as thirteen million. How can you bear to hear all this betrayal? I blame you for that.
The product of your land is not meant for all of your children. It is looted by the few, whom you brought out from your own womb, monsters who feed on their brothers and sisters. Your precious metals, produces, trees and the land, are sold to fill the pockets of your rulers. They made you a desert, they made you poor and yet they blame you for that, nevertheless, they are your own children. Why did you bring them to life? You could have suffocated them in their crib. You are to blame.
Don’t you smell the blood that is spilt on your face, the blood of your own children? Why did you give birth to monsters? You are responsible for every pain your children are suffering, because you gave birth to renegades.
Have you seen the tears, the sweat and the blood of your children who are behind bars? Why are you so silent? Have you chosen to be deaf, so that you do not have to take responsibilities? I think that it suits you better.
Why are you a paradise and a hell at the same time? You are like a giant tree, but eaten by worms from inside. You are also like a beautiful woman married to abusive husbands, the latest worse than the former. Why can’t you choose the right husband who is worth your name and your beauty?
Shall I go on blaming you? I stop here because I am fed up of your silence. It is driving me crazy.
Oh dear mother Ethiopia, finally I do not have the heart to say that I hate you, because you are my mother. I cannot even accuse you, because you are not responsible for what have become of your children, the few bastards who desecrated your famous name and your proud history.

This is what you wrote:"Ethiopia shall be free with our blood!"

Ante Feussam - let see if you can go and confront Meles and his elite shooters - It is easy to write all kind of BS but what we want to see is action.... Mr. Rambo

john [Visitor]

First and foremost you are not an English man but a fellow Ethiopian who lives in England and second what you saw in the eyes of the Ethiopians,- is not fear but Despair and Hopelessness.
You see my friend-In Ethiopia, the concept of Welfare system is nonexistent. People without any means to feed themselves are hopeless - there is absolutely no one to feed them - it is them and their wretched fate.
when a person reaches that stage of total despair, he/she only sees " hopelessness"

lekim [Visitor]

My dear compatriot from the tiemben wrote this - ".. but never again shall we let a pack of village idiots preside over our future and the future of our children."

True to the core with your statement!!
But you uncle in Arat Kilo is not doing enough to eradicate famine from your hood in Tigrai and WE - the rest of the country cannot any longer let some village idiots from Mekele to preside over our future either"
We, Ethiopians are sick and tired of being the poster boy of Famine.

The famine is in your Tigrai and Wollo-the lazy bums from the North who are NOT willing to work hard and are so much immersed in their faith - leaving their future in the hand of an unknown God. By now they should realize that God does not provide - but we the people should work hard to bring food to our table.
We should introduce the concept of two child per family. It is crazy to see a poor family with 8 or 9 kids trekking for miles to beg.

The other thing that your uncle Meles should do is to expel all those Somalis refugees that he accommodates them inside Ethiopia -
Big area of Bole is full of them. These people are not citizens of Ethiopia they are refugees they should be living in tents at the border of Ethiopia and Somalia. Like it is done in Kenya.
Their children are crowding our school, these people get all kind of money from outside and with those flush of cash they are one of the reason that prices of basic food inside Addis and big towns are skyrocketing at the blink of the eye.
Plus with their voracious appetite for Khat, Ethiopian farmers instead of growing basic food they are all turning to Khat farmers. because it is a lucrative business.

Ethiopia is not in a position to play "Free Hotel" to accommodate these refugees when our citizens are facing food shortage

The returning of the favor between Meles (as a refugee in Somalia, during Dergue)and Somali people is between them - The rest of Ethiopia should not be imposed by burden.
Maybe you should advise him to accommodate these refugees inside your Tigray where the parched terrain and the weather is so similar to their Somalia and these refugees will feel at home - Addis is too cold for them and DD and Adama and Jijiga are all too crowded for them

Your reason
“the sudden growth of the population vis-s-vis the limited resource for food is a major factor for this never ending cycle of famine”
government always expected to have a population growth data. Learning from the past experience and 18 years in power there should be a backup plan and awareness … anything less is a luck of governances.
“young people leave their ancestral farming land to come to the major cities in search of easy job”
when mother nature is not helping and government is selling out the land the only option is migration like me and you did … the fittest will survive others die before they reach their destination.
“no one is trying to introduce mechanic agriculture in those area where they farm our staple food such as lentil, maize, sorghum and so on..”
but I hope you mean “introduce mechanized farming “ if that is what you mean simply say why do not they it cake” when they are seeking a piece of bread to get buy the day… that is a jock!!

Meles and his regime have proved to the world that they are not capable of leading and solving problems. Simple as farming producing food has become huge problem since EPRDF is in power and it is getting worse and worse year after year.

Drought stricken countries even Somalia with its chaotic and dismantled government does not have famine and hunger. It is only Ethiopia, which is caught up with this quagmire when the vast majority of the country land is fertile and green.

The problem is the regime with its ineptness land policy, Stalinist mentality and greedy and secessionist political policy.

The hungary and needy could not access their right, because of the secessionist regime. Any financial aid is used by the regime for their own personal benefit and to build armaments and wages for their weakening military, to keep the majority of people oppressed. Lemani Halafi Mengedi, the dreamer of "Tigrai Tigrigna!

Don't change the topic. We're talking about the 13 Million human made famine victims, not the imprisoned jero Tebis. It is not even about the victims of day light shooting of Addis University students or the Ogaden, Oromiya, Gambela and other citizens. That's for another day. We're talking about lekim and his co., 25 years ago and their replacements bu new Shashemene and Wolaita citizens.

By the way, shouldn't one be prison for for his own good to learn and develop work culture than being Poster child to be displayed in World forum. I guess you're too desensitized from earning dignity and self respect, coming from the culture of "beinte sima lemariyam" background!

NO! To jero Tebi agents!

No surprise, no surpris. It same old stories: Ethiopia has been poster child of famine, genocide, socio-political and economic injustice, wars, relgious aparatheid, elitism deception and plundrs of natiobnal resources. Any new thing her? I'm afraid not.

On the other hand, there factors called population control including human bein, which can be either natural or man-made. . Thes factors strike the right balance of population mass in a given time and space. Droughts, famine, fluids, earth quick, tsunamis, etc, are the natural ones while wars, deforestation/ urbanization, failure of government and institution, etc are man-made. In ethiopis there is sync of both . These could result devatating outcome.

Many natural factors like famine and drought and all of the man-made perils are are preventable and that is exactly what many countries around the world of both developed and less developed have done

Any country who wants to give money to Meles should stay out of Ethiopians tragedy because that will only prolong the sufferings to us.

First Meles and his TPLF cadres should retire from power. They simply did not have either the intelligence or the wisdom to lead. They simply are collection of looser TPLF thugs and gangs.

We saw them year after year and the so-called fake election after election. The only thing they perfected themselves is begging for money in the name of the starved victims and creating misery.

As the article articulates, "We cannot make the rains come, but there is much more that we can do to break the cycle of drought-driven disaster in Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa," Oxfam director Penny Laurence said.”
"Food aid offers temporary relief and has kept people alive in countless situations, but does not tackle the underlying causes that continue to make people vulnerable to disaster year-after-year."

Very well said. So the underlying cause is the vicious ignorant and corrupt regime of Woyane.

When Woyane leave all the misery will end!

You seem educated person yet you are defending a man and administration from 1940 to 1945 German Nazi groups.

Seriously how do eat and sleep peacefully knowing your intellectuals and religious leaders are languishing in the person over 10 years with out any charge to them just for HADERA?

The worst thing is the authorities come back to GEZA HADERA prison cell and ask prisoners to write down what is their crime. The prisoner is the one who knows why is in prison or the authority that put the person in the prison? “Grimbitsya Mai La’akeb” Or “TEGEMTILUNI”

Who thought you to do such crime to your own people who fought and gave their precious youth time on your side for 30 years?

Did the Italian or English people committed against your people during your Sognar DONKEY GARI pusher era?

Do you guys have any humanity in your vocabulary?

BTW, before I create ABAY TIGRAI, you will be wiped out from the face of BANDALAND and we will live in peace with our brothers Kunama, Saho, Tigre, Bellen and Afars as my ancestors did for 3000 years.

Clowns like you are not worthy to include them as Ethiopians. If Ethiopia is America’s reliable dog, what does that make you? Perhaps Eritrea’s hooker! Either way, Ethiopia is and will tackle the issues it is facing or it will pull itself off from the current crisis while you fellows continue your barks. Ethiopia is indeed in a rapid transformation but has not yet fully fledged transformed. But what is really observed by international media outlets is disgusting. No one denies that draught has loomed in some parts of Ethiopia and the government is fully committed with its partners to curve the situation. The draught has come because of shortage of rainfall which is beyond the people and govt. of ethiopia to thwart its effect. However the government has in its own capacity put a working policy of land use over how it is effectively used by Ethiopian farmers. This policy has chnged the life of millons and will continue to change the life of millions. But there are elements who do not want to see this happenig because of their ill popitical agdenda. Their agenda is not to see anything good done by the gvernment of Ethiopia. However the dogs will park and the camel will not be hindered from going. No external force will hamper Ethiopia from developing its virgin land in any way it suits her.

For the past twenty years,Somalia has been with out any govt. However, there is no hunger in the country despite all the fighting going on for such a long time. The reason is simple, they learn to take responsibility for their own life as individual which is exactly what we Ethiopian luck. When we face a tragedy or a simple hurdle,we sit and point our finger at each other instead of contributing a constructive idea to solve whatever a problem we have. The great famine which is spreading like a wild fire is a luck of responsibility.Unless we sort out this, what i call an epidemic disease once and for all,it doesn't matter how many rivers we have, they will flow and benefit others for many years to come while we are so busy to hate each other.

You said, “We know how Mengistu and Helieselasse reacted when Ethiopian faced drought” You are right.

They were shocked and hurt because that was their first tragedy (for each one) to see and they did not want ONE single Ethiopian life to face this tragedy.

However, the difference and the problem with Meles is he got hooked in aid money and doesn’t care whether 6 MILLIONS in his own account or 9 MILLIONS of people in actual count vanish from lack of food while he is fattening his belly and bank account.

He kept blaming rain, wind, dust bla, bla, bla , year after year and now he is in his 20 years since he kept killing Ethiopians in the name of famine and not taking the blame.

So think deep and find the difference between the kind Haileselassie , Mengistu the evil and the worst devil and psychopathic genocidal dictator Meles.

Isn’t hanger for 20 years not deplorable to you? Can you imagine how many lives have been lost for hunger since Meles took power in 1991?

Isn’t that a shame and tragedy to defend this psychopathic genocidal dictator?

Shegaw - Yayew Hulu Yidenekal,

A lot has been said about the topic so,i don't have a much to say it or add it.However,I felt that a bit to say about the oblique and distracted comment of Mr Shegaw regarding the Somalis lived in Addis mostly at Bole expensive areas.

My friend, you said in response to lekim "The other thing that your uncle Meles should do is to expel all those Somalis refugees that he accommodates them inside Ethiopia -
Big area of Bole is full of them."

First, let all known the previous famines in Ethiopia, the Somalis were not In Addis, even the late famine in Tigray province,a millions of Somali Ethiopian citizens(the Somali Ogadenis)were driven out from there homeland(Ogaden region)by the Derg's military killing zerafs and the coward pilots undiscriminated bombardment though out region which caused a flex of huge exodus of Ogaden refuges to cross border and seek shelter in Somalia. Therefore, the Somalis living in Addis, they are the cuase of Ethiopia famine.Instead, the local Ethiopian small business, like hotel and restaurant industries, the real state and home rentals were in fact enjoyed the Somalis as there good customers.FYI Mr Shagew, you know that, even the Ethiopian beggars were happy with Somali generosity and reckless spending money so,the overall Ethiopians were happy and enjoyed the Somalis presences in Ethiopia.Other benefit was also that people of the Horn were more learned to each others and more integrations of entire peoples of horn which it brought up and increases the flow of small businesses though the region countries(Somalia,Kenya and Ethiopia) which that as result improves and boosting the micro economics of the HORN's people. On the other hands,in the near futures since many modern peoples of the horn have the dreams and predicting the one nations of the horn, the Somalis were became and would be the bridges and the connections of the horn peoples.

Mr Shagew, you also said " Ethiopia is not in a position to play "Free Hotel" to accommodate these refugees when our citizens are facing food shortage:I don't think this is true. There is no a Somalis accommodated free in hotels, instead the government charged them the highest prices like other foreign guest paid. The Somalis uses their own pockets and simply spent their $$ sent from abroad relatives and friends. As I said these is good for local business and in fact its boost for the growth of the locals micro economic.

Furthermore,you said:
"The returning of the favor between Meles (as a refugee in Somalia, during Dergue)and Somali people is between them - The rest of Ethiopia should not be imposed by burden"

.What favors paid by Melse to the Somalis are you taking? I didn't get it? So far,its a well remembering among the Somalis. The Melse invasions of weak and non governing in years of Somali peoples was the favors he paid back to Somalia. His devastated invasions which resulted the cruel killings and the distractions of their beautiful Mogadishu city, would be a permanent scares remaining hearts of the Somalis. In fact,Melese was a pet snake during he stayed in Mogadishu and received the highest value help from the Somalis.Unfortunately, the snake bonded and bits the Somalis.Mr Shagew, you know his damage to the Somalis is unrepairable in the years coming.

So is that of what you known a favor?
