25th anniversary of Ethiopia famine - Has anything changed since?

My colleague Marc Cohen, a senior researcher at Oxfam America, reflects on the 25th anniversary since the devastating famine of 1984 in Ethiopia. He was in the country a few months ago.

Twenty-five years ago, Michael Buerk's dramatic BBC footage from Korem, in northern Ethiopia, brought a devastating famine to the world's attention. Tens of thousands of people had sought refuge from war and drought in the town. Every 20 minutes, a camp resident died from hunger and related diseases.

Buerk called Korem "the closest thing to hell on earth."

With 10000 BEgger org. registered in name of Charity, ethiopia is the birth place of modern time Beggerism.

The Best solution is to THROW out ALL these parasite org. out of ethiopia.

Sterilize those who have more than 3 chidrens in the north and east

to know what is changing here in Ethiopia you need to live here in the country, any thing changed? yes a lot, but due to that our problem were accumulated from many years back, no one should to expect that we are going to wipe all away with in the sun rise, so every one who thinks that we have eliminate our problem and start a new era, should be on action and should start to be on the road of constructive aligns, instead if we are always to be only propagandist and just a foul scanners, who the hell is going to solve our historic enemy, by the way this depate should to be open only for Ethiopians, Eritreans and other destructive characters better to be away from our affairs their schedule is to eliminate the historical home of Ethiopians from the land, where else the day to day of aim and task of Ethiopians should TO PUT OUR motherland to have its true image. ther was a time that Ethiopia was sent her hand to British, ther was a time that Ethiopia becomes under disastrous problem and one day we also have a time to deliver our hand to those who are in problem.

Z-Mike and likes roll up your sleeves and feed the people who are deing. All that preaching of your god Meles.
Meles is good at dressing the country to look like:
Democratic: With not real election

Lots of light and building: with few chosen benefiting from the business.

Lots of road: Again few benefiting

Sell all land to farm: not accountable or an fair decision to whom we sell.

Yes, that is why we need any govenment not to stay over two terms for accountability reason.

Change will melt tension and build confidence and accountablity to leaders!

Famine, Ummm! So much for the fake development myths of the tribal junta (TPLF). The country and its people are sliding down hill every day since the tribal junta took power.

The change is that famine has gotten worse and become part of the governemnt yearly policy to get money.

The human tragedy, humility and the loss of dignity seemed to have become Meles's tool to urge donors to give him more money to keep it for himself, his shameless families and friends.

Yes there is a change, but Nazreth failed to to put it at front. Here are some changes they saw: "During the years since the 1984 famine, things had begun to change in the area around Korem, and these changes made it possible for a young woman like Merzeneb to think about pursuing new options in life. Ethiopia's civil war ended. The regional and federal governments built roads. Irrigation was available in Ashenge. The government launched a safety net program that puts people to work planting trees and building terraces on the steep hillsides, so that farming doesn't degrade the land. And agricultural extension advisers, sent by the government, are now living in the villages, working with the farmers every day, instead of showing up once every few weeks.

In Ashenge, one of the five advisers is a woman, and some of the male advisers have received special training on gender issues in agriculture so that they can better serve both men and women farmers. It is this web of support services that gave Merzeneb her independence and helped her achieve her goals."
