Athletics Superpower Ethiopia is set to make history in Beijing

Ethiopia will be competing in the summer Olympics that is due to begin on Friday in Beijing, China. This is the 11th appearance for Ethiopia in the summer Olympics, which it first participated in 1956 in Melbourne, Australia.

With the exception of its first appearance in 1956, Ethiopia has won at least one medal in every Olympics it participated. It has won a total of 31 medals, 14 Gold, 5 Silver and 12 Bronze medals. The 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia was the most successful to this date with a total of 8 medals, four of them Gold medals. Ethiopia has won a total of five marathon Gold medals in the Olympics (four for men, one for women).

In 1960 Abebe Bikila made history by becoming the first African to win a gold medal in the Olympics. In 1964 he won another gold medal in the marathon to become the first athlete to win two back-to-back Olympic gold medals in marathon. In 1968, Mamo Wolde of Ethiopia won the gold medal in marathon. And 32 years later, Gezahegne Abera became the third male athlete from Ethiopia to win the Olympic gold medal in marathon, in 2000 (Sydney, Australia).

In 1996, Fatuma Roba made history by winning the Olympic gold medal in the women's marathon and becoming the first African woman to do so.

Ethiopia boycotted three Olympics for political reasons, in 1976, 1984 and 1988.

Ethiopia has 36 athletes competing in Beijing 2008 athletics events.
Ethiopia will also be represented in Boxing by Molla Getachew in the 112-lb.(51 KG) flyweight division. The 51 Kilogram flyeweight is scheduled for August 12 at Workers' Gymnasium in Beijing.

Ethiopia has participated in boxing and cycling in prior Olympics but its strength is in athletics in which it won all of its 31 medals.

Ethiopia is set to make history once again in Beijing and this website wishes good luck to Team Ethiopia.

Go Ethiopia !!!

Abebe Bikila and Mamo Wolde have both been in the heart and mind of all Ethiopians for long time. When Fatuma Roba won in Atlanta she almost made us so emotional and that day was unforgettably the happiest day for most of us who watched her all the way from beginning to end of that track. Many of us were in tears though.

When Gezahegn Abera the other hero won the marathon it became more clear that the mens marathon is the Ethiopian specialty. I am not sure however if there was enough publicity about Gezahegn compared with other heroes. May be it was me I knew only very little about him.

[Observer, thank you. BTW it is done, you can try now. email us if you have any questions]

I wish all the best for all Ethiopian Athletes. This time all are Superb and it was made the best selection except Dire Tune Who has an outstanding determination and gut to win in most of her past Marathon and half marathon tournaments. Therefore, I convey my message that the federation official s to reconsider moving her from reserve to be aligned with Gete & Berhan together in woman marathon start up line. I’ve confidence that she will make miracles and she will show the same determination that Haile & Meseret showed in the pervious Olympic

Do not be silly every time & everywhere!!! You always want to talk about ethnicity and instead try to clean yourself from this kind of mentality before blaming others. In Ethiopian Olympic all ethnicity from North to south from east to west contribute and have equal share for Olympic medals and glorifying of Ethiopia in different sport arenas. These heroines of Ethiopia never claimed their ethnicity when they stand on the podium and wear the flag and they are more proud about their being Ethiopians than the confused elites who always blame ethnicity for its failure in all aspect of life. This is the time to give moral support to our beloved athletes who are more Ethiopians to correct the country tarnished image because of our politics and famine and drought. Politician comes and goes without doing any positive contribution but our athletes do successfully their mission to popularize the country at the top. God blessed all our athletes!!!

I wish all Ethiopian Athletes the best of luck. This is the moment they are shining and bring pride to all Ethiopians.
I applaud Wadani for saying to put aside politics and support the athletes. However, some morons could not refrain themselves from interjecting they bitter words.

KOKEB’s listing of Ethiopians’ medals is wrong. He also left out some athletes. For example, Mirus Yifter won two gold in 5000 and 10000 meters in 1980 (not bronze in 5000). I watched that game. Also, Mohamed Kedir won in 10000 meters and Eshetu Tura won bronze in 3000 meters steeplechase. These are the only 4 medals Ethiopians won in 17 years of Derg’s regime. As the article indicated above, Derg forced Ethiopia to boycott in 1976, 1980, and 1988 due to politics. Sport and politics should not be mixed together.

The list of medal winners is provided with the links below
