Band Aid Saved me but 25 years later my country is still hungry- Birhan Woldu

AS a baby seemingly near death she was the face of the Ethopian famine exactly 25 years ago yesterday.

Today Birhan Woldu is back on the world stage, working to save her country as millions more battle a NEW famine.

Birhan, 28, said last night: "I'm so very sad that people are going hungry in my country again.

"I know what it's like to lose someone. In the drought 25 years ago my eldest sister and my mother died. So many people died. But I was lucky, I was saved. Now I want to help others in my country to have the chances I've had."

Do you have an answer for this young lady? Years ago she was the face of the famine.

Some 25 years later she is still wondering why things did not improve in her Tigray. I hope you are not in denial and pretend that things are all rosy in your Tigrai

By the way this is the famous shuruba - the trade mark of Tigrai women - that have inundated all the streets of Kazanchiss and Bole.

Now I hope you understand our frustration regarding this famine in your Tigrai and the province adjacent to your hood, Wollo.

Your boss and his entourage at Arat Kilo are becoming immune to the suffering of their own people.

Your own people are once again in dire situation - Food is in great need to save the children the way this young lady was saved

And where the hell is that Eleni of that commodity exchange - Someone has to tell her to forget about coffee and sesame seeds and pay more attention to this famine and facilitate all kind of logistic to bring some relief to those affected

Some 25 years ago - we gave as an excuse it was Mengustu, a Marxiste state, he did not like the people of Tigrai ... etc.. What seems to be the reason now? when your own people are at the helms of the coutnry? A democratic country? what is the use of democracy when people are starving? who needs shallow politics?
I just hope your Alamoudi with that bonanza of gold that was extracted from the mines of Wollega will show some compassion and share this gold to feed the people of Tigrai

Birhan Woldu you are beautiful real Tigrayen woman.Yes, indeed its said story we about to see another terible situation in our country. But don't worry this is not the situation like twenty five years ago.Twenty five years a go there wasn't no responsible government. The government in place was simply a killer. The government 25 years ago was used its war plane and bombed people while they trying to escaped to sudan to save their life.

Now there is a rall and resposible government in place who willing to help and preventing further lost of life. That is the differences between now and twenty five years a go.Yeha

TPLF is too busy concocting ethnic tensions to do anything tangible in regards food security. It is unfortunate, this evil government has the support of Wold Bank.

The only hope for Ethiopians is to fight the evil tribal junta till death. Everybody should promise to himself/herself that there is only happiness when this evil regime is put in its grave. Till then we are all grieving.

You keep referring to the Tigray people as "your people". I assume you are Ethiopian, and if so aren't the Tigray people your people too? Or are you trying to put yourself as somebody at a higher echelon than the Tigray people? Perhaps you are an Eritrean trying to create discord between the Ethiopian people?
Whoever you are, I bet you are devoid of self confidence and esteem.

This woman is a living example that famine, death due to man-made factors and diseases can be defeated, if there is good will, mainly on the part of the government and in continuation on the part of citizens.
HS, MHM and MZ are joined by one common factor, FAMINE.
Those people, who try to absolve the present regime from its responsibilities, should know that all legitimate governments all over the world vow when they take office, to protect their people from man-made and natural catastrophes. The death of one single person due to the irresponsibility of a government is taken as a grave failure on its part, let alone the death of thousands of people due to a preventable factor. Otherwise, they had better be at home. Even there, there is a big responsibility for ones family. No responsible person has the right to expose his family to danger, much more so, the government of a country.
This woman is the rare example of a fortunate human being. If there had been a democratic and responsible government in Ethiopia, yesterday-today-tomorrow, she would have been like millions of Africans (I am not talking of the West), who are fortunate enough not to see the ugly face of famine and death, due to the unforgivable failures of a government.
Ethiopians should also know that famine has no label.

It looks like the "Micro Economics" gone wrong and once again famine returned to where it killed millions 25 years!
If all the money looted and smuggled by the greedy Woyane leaders into foreign banks, had been invested in development, there would be no famine in the country. Unfortunately, there are a handful of crooks out there in Arat Kilo who amass fortunes out of the misfortune of multitudes.

Famine doesnt exist in democracies.

20+ years [and more after the sham-election] is enough. Please Mr. Zenawi, step down and let genuine, serious and democratic minded Ethiopians manage Ethiopia.

Nepotism, corruption and ethnich politics will not eradict famine but only make it 1000-times worse.

Yes, me, you and the government. We can not go on blaming others and do nothing. Let us get organized, be first to help, accept leadership and change the system that keeps producing famine.

The most publicized famine of Ethiopia happened in 1988 under the watchful eye of the leader of the military junta, Colonel Mengistu Hailemariam. The constant recurring famine has continued to kill numerous people under the watch of Meles Zenawi. The common denominator between these two regimes is that they are undemocratic, and they are not accountable and responsible to the people.
Why?
Ethiopia is one of the most back ward, illiterate, un electrified, un wired and famine stricken country in the entire world thanks to the backward looking voodoo economics practiced by our illustrious and fearless leader Tayrant Melese.

Dear nazret.com.
I thank you from the bottom of my heart for bringing this important story in the open. I think enough have been said and commented. And Now, it is time to act. Please find someone who is capable to organize and let us do something about for our people who are affected by this famine. Find an organization that can help us help the victims directly without going through the Woyane govt.. If every Ethiopian who live in Europe and US donate $100.00 US dollar, some can give more or less, to words this cause--about one million of us together can come up with over One Billion dollars to help our people. Oprah Winfrey’s organization always give 100% of donated money to wards the cause. Let us challenge people like Oprah, Bill Gates and some others if they could match our donations and help us with our goal. Let us show our unity and our dissatisfactions with Melass to the world and expose the child killer who doesn’t give a hoot for Ethiopians and our willingness to do something for our people. This time our concerns need to be known that--We Ethiopians do not want the money we donate not to go to Mekelle origin only; our efforts are to help all Ethiopians.

Please find a non-woyane to write an articulated letter to Oprah’s Organization and let us do something this time. I am willing to donate $200.00 US dollar towards this cause. Thanks again. Let’s do this!!!!

Almazina, you are taking the "your people" out of context.
FYI, my comment was directly addressed to the individual that goes by the name - LEKIM.

Since the current government in Ethiopia is of Tigrai origin and the people we have been witnessing going through this famine are mostly people from Tigrai - So, I had to ask this Lekim person - why Meles is not paying attention to the plight of his own Tigrai people.

When I said "Your People" to Lekim it only means - Tigrai administration - VS - the starving people of Tigrai. Capish Almazina??
By the way, not my problem if you have problem understanding my very basic English language - the equivalent of 6th grader. Believe me - No one on this nazret.com - ever complained that I have a broken English, therefore you should be able to understand me - without me going through the process of explaining to you in length my comment.
Nevertheless, allow me to answer your question - Sure Tigrai is part of Ethiopia and we are all represented under the same Flag - Green - Yellow - Red.

NO - I don't believe there is "Echelon" or class or cast system when it comes to race and ethnicity - at least not in our country. We are all equal under the glorious flag of Ethiopia

I am completely rebuking your distorted allegation that I am -"Devoid of self confidence and esteem" as I write this comment I am scorning at your logic - Because I said "your people" therefore you think I am devoid of self-confidence LOL!! Almazina - What happened in Logic 101??

Famine has been a gold mine for TPLF bosses. Their wealth back home and in foreign countries is at the expense of dead children, women and the elderly. It is time to bring these criminals to justice. There is no statue of limitations on such crime.

TPLF made a fortune of the 1984 famine which resulted in launching the huge business conglomerate EFFORT. The $100 million dollars Live Aid's Bob Geldof handed over to Meles Zenawi and Sebhat Nega when he invited them to the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, needs further investigation. It is a big robbery unknown for many of us, especially for those who donated their money after they saw the heartbreaking images of hungry Ethiopian children.

The $100 million was kept between Meles Zenawi and Sebhat Nega, who deposited in their foreign accounts. We have the right to ask Bob Geldof to tell us what he knows. We know this money had not reached the dying and starving people in whose name the money was collected.

Its not Tigre region or Wollo most affected now the most affected is the south and Here region. which has the most fertile land than the Tigrai region.
But the way you respondent is very wrong. You shouldn't say to Meles your people ok his not only leading Tigre he is leading the whole country ok. No children should die in any part of Ethiopia because of Hunger any more; You now better than that.

You wrote

" By the Way this is the famous shuruba- the trad markof Tigrai women that have invundat all the streets of Kzanchiss and Bole"

This govenment voted for all help to come through the govenment just for simple reason to give and preach at the same time to be re elected.. Yes this same govenment would not allow free speach the reason is they are hiding way to many things!

Mengistu is Communist and we all know what communist regim stood for and let us not go back to compare Meles with Mengistu!

The time is different, based on that I would rate your god Meles as poor. Do not get me wrong Meles is smart man with good ability of speaking, but Ethiopia would need more than that. The most important thing in Ethiopia is unity, free speach, and free election then and then we would:
-Share from all part of Ethiopia the food
-Less tension since all feel represented some what

Then we need the quality of Meles with smarts and out spoken. Meles is using his intelect to cover up to booly to stay in power at any cost and that is why he is not a good leader.

Many who are in this wave are not babies so stop talking baby talk!

Hear we go with your accusation of me being Eritrian, Neftegna, ONEG or OLF, hater of Meles.

Many say how I could not be thankful to Meles he changed many things...
I say to them I am thankful for smooth transition at the begining. And for opening investors to come in and do business.

I would have been more thankful if he was more open and media is free for me to know how accounatable is his party!

I disagree with him as well in some issues:
-Not being transparent
-Not allowing opposition to build thier
party directly.
-Being booly
-anti unity

Some people are just unable to shed their ethnic prejudice no matter how hard they try to hide it.

We all agree that Meles is the facto leader of Ethiopia but the way we are witnessing so many things are going awry - to bring to your attention here are some: Education - literacy rate is (42%) vs 95%(at the height of Dergue regime) - Rampant nepotism - mismanagement of land - widening disparity between the oligarchs of Addis and the poor and now we are facing another insult - the Famine

Come on.. Helen baby, don't be too sensitive - we are trying to demonstrate to you and your likes that the country is becoming LEADERLESS

We also learned from this damned nazret.com that Meles is suffering from high blood pressure - usually it is advisable for people afflicted with hypertension not to live in high attitude and Addis being on 2000 level above sea level - maybe we are wondering if Meles is still in Addis? maybe he is hibernating in Mekele? You tell us what is the situation with our favorite leader... at this point we accept any excuses.

There were many Tigray patriat who die in war who had difference with Meles aginst ASSEB and ERTERIA so Melese doesn't represent all Tigray ok.

I now Meles did wrong in lots of different issue like BADEME and ASSEB but what I don't understand most people here is their blind hate to The tigray people and their 100% opposite against melese. instead of working with him to narrow their differences and work for the people to solve problem. Woyane may have done well some places but does that give him right to hold office forever? Does that give him right to not allow othres serve thier country and thier people?

The only way any country could hold a leader accountable is when there is free election and when a leader is held accountable to all his move and if not thrown out of office.

Yeha,

. . .we are not born yesterday and dont try to fool us again and again with your stupidity. . .25 years ago there is no advance technology and proper way of farming, including the pest control to produce more foods for us. . .

. . .for 18 years is not enough for your stupid regime? to improve, to upgrade, to gain, to find solution and eradicate hunger?. . .

. . .forgive me to tell you again this!. . .

IDIOT! your, STUPID, GREEDY and LEBA regime cant survive to continue LOOT US! TO FOOL US! and get BREATHING SUPPORT for their CRONIES without Famine or Food Shortage in our country!!!. . .

. . .remember this, `till the Tyrant, Leba and Looters are there, the ENDLESS famine and hunger will occur in our country!. .

See meless now and compare what he looked like before he took power. and then calculate how many must go hungery so that he can live the way he lives. and imgine how many hungry woyanes we had before and now. To make thing woresset meless is the pooerest compared to the savage 4th greader woynaes who try to controll the economy. you need more money for corrupt government then you have to go hungry in millions. i mate one savage woyne (he is rich) and said meless is the bottel neck for the economy. dont gate me wrong. i am not the supporter of meless. you fake election but cant fake food security for all. you can have your own mass media which tells how beautifull this hunger is than the one we had before.

Don't let some low life scums take the best in you.they are only trying to bring you down to their low life level.the best way to deal with them is to keep your cool.and tell them the truth you believe in.

I like your comment which says "meles"doesn't force people to go to school,it is their right"this is the truth.
Mershiti (mouth shiti) "the segera aff" doesn't want to hear this kind of reality going on in Ethiopia.the truth is his arch enemy.that is why he attacked you with such vulgarity.it looks like he doesn't have sister or mother the way he disrespect you,or the rest of our sisters in that matter.
