Band Aid Saved me but 25 years later my country is still hungry- Birhan Woldu

AS a baby seemingly near death she was the face of the Ethopian famine exactly 25 years ago yesterday.

Today Birhan Woldu is back on the world stage, working to save her country as millions more battle a NEW famine.

Birhan, 28, said last night: "I'm so very sad that people are going hungry in my country again.

"I know what it's like to lose someone. In the drought 25 years ago my eldest sister and my mother died. So many people died. But I was lucky, I was saved. Now I want to help others in my country to have the chances I've had."

Some 25 years ago - we gave as an excuse it was Mengustu, a Marxiste state, he did not like the people of Tigrai ... etc.. What seems to be the reason now? when your own people are at the helms of the coutnry? A democratic country? what is the use of democracy when people are starving? who needs shallow politics?
I just hope your Alamoudi with that bonanza of gold that was extracted from the mines of Wollega will show some compassion and share this gold to feed the people of Tigrai

This woman is a living example that famine, death due to man-made factors and diseases can be defeated, if there is good will, mainly on the part of the government and in continuation on the part of citizens.

No responsible person has the right to expose his family to danger, much more so, the government of a country.
This woman is the rare example of a fortunate human being. If there had been a democratic and responsible government in Ethiopia, yesterday-today-tomorrow, she would have been like millions of Africans (I am not talking of the West), who are fortunate enough not to see the ugly face of famine and death, due to the unforgivable failures of a government.
Ethiopians should also know that famine has no label.

FYI, my comment was directly addressed to the individual that goes by the name - LEKIM.

Since the current government in Ethiopia is of Tigrai origin and the people we have been witnessing going through this famine are mostly people from Tigrai - So, I had to ask this Lekim person - why Meles is not paying attention to the plight of his own Tigrai people.

Many say how I could not be thankful to Meles he changed many things...
I say to them I am thankful for smooth transition at the begining. And for opening investors to come in and do business.

I would have been more thankful if he was more open and media is free for me to know how accounatable is his party!

You can oppose melese in different issue we all have an issue but don't make him look like he represent only the Tigray people.

If Tigray was the one who said what you said, it would make him look like very selfish.

There were many Tigray patriat who die in war who had difference with Meles aginst ASSEB and ERTERIA so Melese doesn't represent all Tigray ok.
