The 31st anniversary of the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) was observed here Sunday in the presence of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and higher government officials as well as members of the business community that support the party.
President Girma Wolde-Giorgis and over 1,500 members of the Front and partner organizations also attended the celebration at the Sheraton Addis where statements indicating the bitter struggle the party had waged to ensure peace and democracy in the country with the peoples of Ethiopia were read.

Speaking on the occasion, Chairman of TPLF, Prime Minister Meles Zenawi underscored the unwavering commitment of the Front to eliminate poverty and ensure the prevalence of democracy and good governance across the country despite the changes in the form of the struggle.
Meles said the war at hand is against poverty and the weapons are businessmen and investors who could play crucial role in the fight. The Prime Minister Meles pledged to stand along them and urged them to show courage.
Deputy Chairman of TPLF, Foreign Minister Seyoum Mesfin said on his part that the mystery behind the success of TPLF were its genuine cause, and the ability to mobilize the public to its causes as well as the commitment of its disciplined combatants that steadfastly stand for the principles of the party.
"Speaking on the occasion, Sheik Mohammed Al-Amoudi said supporting the EPRDF, which ensured peace and democracy in the country and elected by the public [sic], would be standing up for peace and development. He said he would therefore support such a government and give his life".
Seyoum said eradicating poverty and backwardness is much more complex and difficult than scoring victory in war and called upon the public to provide its full support in the fight against poverty.
Over 9.6 million birr was donated by members and party supporters as well as businessmen on the occasion. Of the stated sum, 5.5 million birr was donated by the business tycoon Sheik Mohammed Hussein Al-Amoudi and family to strengthen the party.
Speaking on the occasion, Sheik Mohammed Al-Amoudi said supporting the EPRDF, which ensured peace and democracy in the country and elected by the public, would be standing up for peace and development.
The business tycoon said that he vividly recalls and never forgets what the government of EPRDF stated when it first told him to invest in Ethiopia as this is his country. He said he would therefore support such a government and give his life. This partisanship also applies to my family, he underlined.
