Whatever! There really is no way out from Woyanie lies and distortions. They are firing instructors, arresting and torturing teachers and on the same breath they are telling us that they are opening brand new universities and assigning new teachers.

Lies, lies and damn lies!
Death to Woyanie and their supporters!

Gundans are known for their cooperation. I do not know which kind of gundan you are. However, what I am always thinking is my little brothers and sisters getting to educate themselves. I remember how hard it was during my time. Thanks to God, my brothers are getting access to experience the world more than my great grand parents, my grand parents, my parents and myself had.

Good work Gov. but do not forget to correct yourselves in the human rights side too.

Gundan this is a wonderful news to hear that the country has actually built 13 new universities,in addition to the existing one. And here you are agitating about it and insulting the government as usual. As every one knows the tribal overweight hoodum Amhara known as selfish and had only one university in the country for the last 40 years.
Now here we are at 21st century moving on with total of 18 universities within only 16 years of EPRDF administration. Thanks to EPRDF and those whom pays their precious life for us to breath the fresh air that we have today.

I must also big thanks to the youth Tigrayen brothers and sisters who sacrifices heroically for 17 years to bring democracy, equality to Ethiopian people at large.

Yirgacheffe,Lekim,Tigray4ever,selemaster and other EPRDF supporters, you must feel proud of your self these days about our coutry progress. Because of your continuous struggle and contribution our country economy, freedom of speech, above all equal opportunity to all national and nationality is guaranteed. We will rule and continued ruling forever. Long live Ethiopia and EPRDF.

Again, my deepest condolences to the disgruntled of diaspora. There is still time to reconsider, to re-think, to repent and to regret. We all make mistakes and we all misjudge each other. Your people are your people and they will always forgive like the father of the prodigal son. You were led astray. You were told lies. Your passions were enflamed by pointing out to you how much better and purer your blood is than your compatriots at home. Some of you did not need the nudging. You had this mentality long before you arrived to the land of milk and honey. I am more concerned about those misinformed, disinformed youth who have become victims of cheap debauchery by CUD, those young people whose numbers are growing and whose knowledge of and sentiments for the old country are ruimentary, if not altogether absent. Have faith and fear not. You have reasons to be proud of your country. Let us make it a win win story.
Twenty one universities !!! That is too much to bear for those with ill intentions towards Ethiopia. Imagine, if only the Rastaman and his terminator, Mengistu built just one university every 5 years, it would have taken them 100 years. EPRDF has achieved that in less than 10 years. Although my withcraf is not as gifted as those of the SPIRIT and VOODOO of CUD, I am inclined to predict that the coutry will be way ahead in another 10 years, and that despite the unholy consipiracy of CUD with Shaebia.

They started out by blowing up bridges and then they followed it by using donkies as suicide bombing in crowded markets killing hundreds of citizens, now these bandas who are destroying every life giving in every sector of Ethiopia today are saying they are going to reduce poverty and backwardness by building 13 universities? Hogwash.

I think the compulsive lier woyaneas think a university is a tele center! of course they have seen Indians doing investment in education. but education requires academic freedom, de-politicization of education and sufficient investment. woyanea is dedicated in investing on wars and repression. we clearly remember just two/five months before the election, a woyaneas tried to come up with a ridiculous lie and propaganda saying they have studied and finalized a sub way construction in Ethiopia. they also showed a sort of cartoon-made blue print. we never heared about it again-it was too good to be true from the out set. They do not even have sense of reality to come up with seemingly plausible lie, if one has to! In a country where, teachers and their professional association are prosecuted and harassed endlessly, education can not thrive freely. all might probably happen is dergue-style brainwashing! we are sick of it and it is 21st century come on woyaneas- grow up!

We should see and appreciate the positive side of the current government. Only over a decade ago we had only two universities. One can argue about the quality when such a large of them flourish given the current shortage of instructors and infrastructure, even in the so called the "old universities". However, it is better to have as many Universties as possible as these are the keys for better Ethiopia! What do you think?

The policy of keeping Ethiopians illiterate and unlearned, thank God Almighty is dead and buried. Of course the children of those who preyed on the people are today enjoying in the diaspora, the resources that there parasitic fore fathers took from their serfs and their children who were kept as their shepherds. Millions of these people went with out food or starved to death so that the Barons eat raw meat, drink butter and tej. They send their spoiled children abroad to get education and to make the system even more hazardous to the living condition of the people. Today they live a life of luxury from the looted money of Ethiopia and the education they earned at the expense of the great majority of Ethiopians. They are envious of the Universities that are popping up all over the cities of the Nations and Nationalities. Today every opportunity is given by the merit system not by the power of the reactionaries. These people who even envy the big sheet of the ordinary Ethiopians are trying their best to abort this system and are disseminating false and defamatory propaganda campaign against the experimental fledgling democracy we got. These reactionaries are not ashamed to work hand and gloves with all the enemies of Ethiopia, in vain. Today's Ethiopia is a democratic government of the people and by the people. Power comes through election, equal and equitable treatment of all, no matter whose children they happen to be. Down with the sons and daughters of the feudal regime and the servants of the despotic and barbaric government of Mengistu. VICTORY TO THE BROAD MASSES OF THE VICTIMIS, THE ABUSED AND MISSUSED BY GENERATION OF REACTIONARY GOVERNMENTS OF OUR PAST.

You have a wonderful clear sight of things and a loyal heart in the bargain for your country. I agree with you, absolutely. Education is the way, not nursing lost glories of yesteryear. All because of the lack of know how and education, Ethiopia has never been any Alhambra, let alone the cradle of civilization. This kind of talk, albeit it might sound disarming, it leaves a lot to be desired by way of imploving of our lot. It is more like the hype of 13 months of sunshine and the rest of the hogwash.

By the way some of these so called universities are former teacher training inistitutes TTI and highschools. There are no books in them. no journals in them. No trained educaors. no professors. There is a new woyane definition of a university. They are reducing our country to substandard education much lower than mosto of Africa.
For a government which has recived 23 billion dollars of aid from the west and the most aid funded country in sub Shara Africa these numbers dont mean anything. By the way if you compare the inside of these universities, the facilities, the ones in Tigrai are well planned and well supplied.

Unlike Universiies in the rest of the wold students are not free to explora and learn and excercise responsibility. when they ask their rights they get intimidated and killed in many instances.
Even at AAU, students are not allwed to have their own newspapers. They had one a few years ago and they use to have vibrant papers dufing Hilesilassie. Not now under woyane. These are not univesities. These are baracks made for propaganda purposes.

Woyene stooges please tell these to five year olds

what about proportionally rulling government frol all Ethiopian ethnic groups, could that create confussion?

In our time to be a University student is by it self a burden as it costs to much for going and coming especially for the low income society and who had more than a couple of children. Now all that bad century and all Neftegna Amhara arogant states which was Shoe centered fall down and the Ethiopians started to see lots and lots of Universities in their backyards.
For Neftegna who had done very little for this country this fact is unswallowed rather it is a choking phenomena in the throat.

To all including Woyane cadres;

Do you really know what it takes to establish even a single university? Estblishing an accredited university is not like making injera with few raw materials.
First of all are there enough qualified instructors? Are there enough textbooks? Is the growth of the country's economic sector in congruence with the growth of the man power? That is not to deny the educational need of e person, but can that education be translated with a stagnant economy? Even we assume that the educationa sector needs a revamp how can one justtify 13 universities for a country like Ethiopia in such a short period.
The TPLF is always full of surprises and this one tops them all. It is good on paper but not good enough for serious eduactional professionals. Nice attempt though to fool people.

If it is true the addition of 13 universities will definitely help reduce poverty in our country. The present administration should be given credit. Building the higher learning facilities itself shows dedication to poverty reduction through education. Staffing the universities is not going to be a big problem. Ethnicity has nothing to do with leadership, vision, and commitment to excellence. These qualities are common to every human kind. Look around the world and you'll find it in every society. So lets not try to justify ones' success or failure on their ethnicity. Being blinded by ethnic pride and politics resulted hitler and the second world war which brought about death and destruction on a bigger scale. So lets allow those people with good qualities mentioned above to contribute toward progress regardless of ethnicity which will benefits us all in the long run. Ethiopia's diversity in ethnicity should be considered a big rich resource. Unity, prosperity through ethnic diversity. Long live Ethiopiawinet.

W/ro conjo,

I awake in 1991 and saw nothing, but looting and daylight robery by the then TPLF and EPLF gangs. I slipt back to sleep and said we are cursed for ever. Now I can see something changing. I only wonder why? why did they not do the good work then from the begining? My assumption that why the TPLF is now allowing all these not benefit the people they serve, but to consoldate all the looted money and resources beacuse they have reached the highest treshold of wealth accumulation. This is good thing to realise that you can not have it all for ever and live some for many to scable on. I admire them on this that they can say we had enough. That was lacking from previous regimes. I think there is bad thief and good thief. As I can see reconcilliation is not far. I acknowledge good job is being done in some part of the country but most periferies are still being ignored. one will be judged by how it treates its minorities and the weak but not majorites. I know that those who have been looting the country have been awake whilie those being looted have been asleep and bored. No is time for all of us to wake up. Being awake means thinking and acting. could we be in trouble for being free to think and act? after all universities are places to think freely and innovate!

“….my next door neighbor from Diredawa, you should be happy for DD to have their first University…”…..wozeiro condjo

Dear wozeiro condjo,

I will indeed be very happy if my favorite town in the whole world has its own university. Madame, if indeed this was true, I will be jumping up and down to contain my excitement. You see my dear Madame, unlike you, every time I visit Ethiopia and I do this every two years; I make a point of spending at least a week in my birth city, Dire Dawa and Harrar, and wander around and see things for myself. I always make a point of visiting all the schools, mosques, churches and markets; tour all the neighborhoods on foot and/or on a funky ‘Gari’ and try to remember the way things were when I was growing up and compare them with the state of affairs today.

Alas Madame! All I have is bad news for you! Things are going down hill and people say it is getting worse under the current regime. You see my dear, TPLF hates Harague so much so, it is doing everything in its power to kill the region’s development and it looks to me it is succeeding very well. Forget the brand new university in Dire Dawa; even the schools (both elementary and secondary) that existed when you and I were growing up are in such a state of disrepair that you could hardly recognize them as schools today. I am not going to spoil your day by describing the shabby condition of the landmarks of our twin cities because if you really are from Harague, it will only make your blood boil. I know we can’t just lump everything that is bad today in Harrar and Dire Dawa to the current regime, because Mengistu with his ‘Red Terror’ doctrine has a lot to answer too. But the nonchalance the current regime is displaying towards the problems in our region is nothing short of incompetence bordering with criminal negligence. Death to TPLF and all their supporters!

Cheers,

-Gundan

It is a good beginning even if we are talking about few concrete blocks here and there…

But the government should keep in mind those special needs of Ethiopian Universities under TPLF as witnessed lately. These beginnings won’t of course be complete and meet TPLF standards as long as they don’t include nearby fully equipped and staffed Agazee barracks, nearby open unmarked fields for mass burial and underground torture chambers…

TPLF: Keep it up and don’t be afraid to show your true nature, always remember that you are ruling unopposed…

This is another milestone in the fight against backwardness and poverty. It is our recent history that only few were the lucky ones to attend even elementary schools in our Ethiopia. It was true that even the few and lucky were all around the core of the ruling classes' city, Addis Ababa. Despite of paying education and other taxes, the rest of the people were neglected for many years. That was true till the end of the disgraced Dergue regime. Today there are higher education institutions in every KLIL (state) and yet more to come. Congratulations to the young and bright, their future is brighter than ever.

Since the our people came a long way to claim their nation, today we happen to celebrate one development after another and indeed Ethiopia is on the right pathway. Those who were “self declared and born to rule” Ethiopia have nothing to celebrate or feel good about the progress our country is making through equality of its nations and nationalities. There is nothing contributions they would make towards its civilization rather conspire with its enemy number one, (shaebia of Eritrea), to destroy and destabilized the nation of ours when and if it can't serve their old purpose.

As it is in every occasion we witnessed mainly in the Diaspora, those who made it by exploiting our poor nation and killing its people during the Dergue time and before shouldn't be expected to acknowledge the bright journey of our nation that is taking place now under the current administration. Therefore, the remnants of the cruel and criminal Dergue regime who have their hands socked with the blood of the innocent Ethiopians and those who are forcefully evicted from our land through the armed struggle would do every thing in their power to undermine the progress that is registering in the parts of democracy, economy, security and education. Their main and last weapon of choice is spreading hatred of one people against another.

Note here: the major achievements of the government in the areas of infrastructure, national defense, foreign policy and of course economic boom are the bold and success stories. Furthermore, I expect the government to continue its dialogue with the people to address some concerns with at most determination, so that our country "claims its rightful place in civilization".

I’m so thrilled and celebrating the day. For those of you who see the "glass half full" congratulations, the country of ours is on the right path.
God bless the holy land, Ethiopia

It is orchestrated by the World Bank. As long as the Ethiopian government includes Ethnicity in the curriculum. And erases the previous history of Menelik, Tedross and Hailesslassie particularly curriculums like the Battle of Adwa, Zerai Deress etc. The World Bank is willing to build 100 universities. This is to outnumber the old curriculum graduates and leave the country divided. Forget 3000 years history and start one like Cuba.

Hello All,

Although this is a very good idea, and is a noble thing to do, one must question the motive of the government:

1. Since criticism among Ethiopians is rising, TPLF is building universities to get more support from the population.

2. Criticism on the poverty of the nation from the West has also risen, this may be why high rises are being built off the AA streets as well as these universities.
3. It is not about the quantity of the universities it is the quality of the education in the universities one must observe. For instance, so many IT centers are/were opened in the City but the quality of the training has been poor and these businesses were/are opened to exploit students' money. Therefore, there has to be some kind of education regulations to monitor the quality of the training.
4. Last but not least, how those universities will operate for both students and staffs, remains to be seen.

Regards,

Expanding education is good but having a good Government is much better. All the graduates are preparing to live their Country because of the tyranny in Ethiopia. Besides, the Universities are built on borrowed money and the money has to be paid back with interest. This is only possible when there is a free and democratic Government where nationals and foreigners are free to invest and produce without having fear of the state terror.

Gundan,

".. if you really are from Harague"

What an insolent statement.

Since Diredawa is your birthplace let me take you in memory lanes. Sunday afternoon where the greek owner used to cough and spit on those who were hanging on his metal gate and then he used to let them come in and see for free the second movie.
Next door was Kuridis, where the best ice creams in the whole world are sold. I still remember the tiles on the floor of that place; Not too far is Bololakos, where we used to drink fanta and coffee. And across the street is Machochee where we used to buy Toblerone chocolat and french and italian cheese. And that crispy delicious dabo bet next door where we used to buy brioche.

You cross the bridge on your right the coffee shop of mahmoud and if you go toward FurRess Megala where the indians used to own textile shops and the natives were the dress makers. In the middle of furess megala there was a tiny park with a small pond with catfish, and a pole with a loud speakers where people sit and listen to the radio. and that famous mikahee where women are not allowed to come in. And across is the sweet shop of sudani where all kind of halawa were sold. And the very colourful megala with the Khat market where all kind of insults used to fly left and right. And kefira where the women of your tribe used to sell all kind of grain sitting on those steps. The famous Notredame with Cicilia from india with very heavy french accent. Frere Philip and Frere Michel.
The Catholic church and across the street the orphanage where the local nuns were taking care of those orphans. Do you know that DD was the only city (beside Asmara) who had garbage collectors.

And let's not forget about the famous sirens from the Railway station that reverberated throughout the city one single time at noon then another single at 2:15 PM and then 2 times at 2:30 PM.
And the french stadium, Stade with its 3 tennis court, a romantic place where every DD girl meet their boy friend away from parental supervision.
So Gundan, I will be happy to describe you Harrar and Alemaya some other time. At the present my heart is filled with so much nostalgia. Don't do this to me ever again. It is a chapter of my insouciant youth that I don't want to revisit ever again.

It is very sad what happened to both DD and Harar. But Meles is not the one to be blame. It it the outsiders are the ones who overused the economy and never do anything for the provinces of Harargue

That is good news. These universities are long overdue. Beggars (that's us) can't be choosers and we should accept them as they are with their strengths and weaknesses. They will bring some development to these areas.small shops, restaurants, housing, transportation and the likes will develop and help local communities. but there are questions that any of us have the right to ask and that the pro-EPRDF shouldn't dismiss. How will these be staffed? will we have the same faculties in several of them so that we can have the choice of going to this or that university without puting our future at risk? How will they play their role of integrating more the different people in ethiopia rather than being the witnesses of ethnic violence as with some of our universities? How can our we insure that they become places where visionnary leaders of tomorow are formed rather than just "technicians" who execute what they are told to do? finaly what is the government doing to minimise the number of batches that are lost when a new facility is opened due to lack of preparation? these should be the focus of the discussions not praises to the goverment or on the opposite side comments unrelated to the issue because of our opposition to the government.

The main objective of increasing the number of the universities is to increase the manpower. But already the job market is saturated. 5000 of those may get a DV lottery to USA and 1000 to Middle East. The rest will be ruled with less salary or will be easily forced to work or fire them from job. Like assigning doctors where there is no hospital. In general it is a model form India, to avoid the repercussion of brain drain. Most of the new universities are staffed by Nigerian, Chinese and Indian the objective being not to be educated by Ethiopians. These instructors are pied 10 times the salary of Ethiopians.Their qualification is questionable. It is like a blind leading a blind.
The universities are constructed in sensitive towns where future political revolt is expected, and these universities will serve as oppression machineries as they are fake universities.
Contribution to economiy of town development is less the average spending per student per month is 20 USD.
I think EPRDF has the cult "we have done it".
So what?
We rule you!!!

Don't get me wrong I by no means do suuport the Woyane regime. This regime fired, jailed prominent scholars which Ethiopia invested for decades. Then cries for shortage and asks Nigeria to provide them. Education and literacy is the only way out from poverty, backwardness, ethnic tribalism, prejudice. We Ethiopians have to be happy. Every regime has a legacy good or bad. Mengistu (Junta Dictator) regime was praised by United nation for literacy campaign and mobilizing the high school students to teach the basic reading writing. Try to see the positive side. Every empire /regime comes and goes. But theses institution will stay and benefit the next generation.
These are my two cents worth.
Peace out.

It is mesmerizing to read that our young men are getting higher education and many universities are opening their gates to enroll thousands of students. Education is the best expenditure for the development of a country. It the foundation on which to build a strong nation.
Unfortunately, education is not by itself panacea, unless it is simultaneously accompanied by democracy, peace, job creation and freedom to live and work anywhere in the country. Many young Africans finish universities in their homeland every year, and yet they end up in western countries (the brain drain), for the simple reason that governments do not bother themselves to accommodate these educated people within the country’s economy. We in the diaspora are a sad example of what our poor country has lost to this brain drain. If this phenomenon is going to continue, the benefit to our country of building so many universities will be negligible.
There must be a way to keep our educated young people in their own country. They must feel free and secure. Democracy and peace must be guaranteed. There should be a plan on the ground to create jobs and employment in all fields and help our men and women to be productive and creative. There should not be nepotism, tribal allegiance and discrimination on ethnic ground. Equal job opportunity and business acquisition for all Ethiopians irrespective of ethnicity must be assured. All the states should have proportional economic development to create jobs for the young.
Is the TPLF/Woyane ready to provide all these? I doubt it.

Mr Thomas,
Well a government is used to show the good will and directives as well as built infrastructures which the private sector cann't do that. You are opposining the positive aspect of the EPRDF government which is commited to this people and countries development.Well try to see what had been done with your ancestores when they were administering Ethiopia for centuries. It was anti-illitrate compagn and elementary school of upto 3 grade. If this time is not the better than for your ancestors to stay Ethiopia in much extreme poverty & illitracy than ever it is even good to have specialised high schools as you are trying to undermine the changes.
21 university in the 21 century is something in which we all Ethiopians feel happy as for quality and fulfilment of their staff and equipments it is not a one day job and it is a matter of comparativity. Even the best centers in the world their resource are not upto the nose.
Mr Thomas if you are realy have the concern to this people and country try to convince your useless diaspora opposition and their CUDP leaders to work for this people and country than to stand and day and night screaming in the street of the west nations inorder to ban all development support which make our people and country out of poverty, back wardness, disease, illitracy, etc.

If this universities are recognised by the international institution then that is ok. Going to university is no different from going to motoring school. If you pass your driving test both theory and practical then you have a license to drive.if you make accident, youpay for damages you made to other peoples properities through your insurance. If you go to uni, you take your theary and practical tests, completing all the modules required, then if you pass you get your diploma, degree, pHD and so on. These are your license for work. The last work left is to show the world that you can do the job using the licenses obtained from this universities. If a lay lady can get recognition for her fine work in festula hospital in Ethiopia, why not others. What is needed is freedom to learn, think and practice. Then everything else will come.

Gundan, my friend you are looking at phase two of the real revolution. This time no false starts and or misfires. The path is very well and clearly defined and the execution is as impeccable as it could ever be. My friend, an entire generation was left behind in the trenches to dismantle your fabricated web of deceptions and lies. The remainder of the generations is building our country and society from the grounds up. A new generation is in the process of inheriting the future and being empowered to assuming the responsibilities of keeping the flames of democracy and the union of equal partners burning. It must be absolutely disheartening for you to watch the old diehard perceptions, expectations and sense of exclusive ownership being dismantled one piece at a time in front of your very eyes. I can imagine the sense of despair that one may feel when everything that they were led to believe in their entire life is, no more. Most of us have been the beneficiaries of your “kindness” in our homes and we can definitely feel the heaviness of your hearts and empathize with your feeling of emptiness. My friend, I know for sure that one day you will be able to look back at this and understand that it was inevitable and why it had to happen the way it did. Ethiopia is in the process of biding farewell to her painful past and is looking forward to the down of a bright future just over the corner. My friend it is ok, you can let go now. Cheers

It seems there is no end to the lies of TPLF thugs. They talk about constructing 13 new universities. I would like these thugs to tell us about the qualities of the existing universities. Universities graduating citizens that don’t write, speak, and comprehend. Universities were graduates have only elementary level of English. Universities were professors and lecturers are fresh undergraduates? Universities were administrative and academic staff are incompetent and of low caliber. Universities were there are no laboratories, lab equipments, materials, and viable projects. Universities were libraries and bookshops filled with books written in the forties and fifties. Why not they tell us about the qualifications of the professors and lecturers at Mekele University? What about the qualities of the laboratories, libraries, and bookshops of Mekele University?

What about that special High School in Tigray? Whose graduates come only from Tigray? It is said that these Tigray students are said to be selected from all over the nation to join this special school. They are also sent only to Ivy League universities in US or the most prestigious universities in England. They are being trained in Law, Economics, Business Management, and Political Science. According to Melesse these are the next generation TPLF leaders who will rule over Ethiopia and insure the supremacy of Tigray. This is Melesse’s strategic plan for Ethiopia for many, many, many years to come. They have extremely devious, hideous, divisive, dark, and distractive plan for Ethiopians of every persuasion. This is not only against every ethnic groups, it is against all religions, cultures, and families. It is against the Ethiopian identity and the Ethiopian person.

But along with the building of Colleges and Universities, the quality of the students graduating must be taken in to account. In this regard, University Instuctors who are molding and shaping the future of the country should be respected and must get better payments. Also jobs must be created for those who are graduating. As you know Ethiopia is a country endowed with a lot of resources, in addition to these resources when skilled engineers and scientists are available, that is a foundation for development.
