Ethiopia - 5th Fastest Growing Economy in the World in 2010 - Economist

nazret.com - The Economist magazine predicts Ethiopia's economy to grow by 7% in 2010 and predicts the country to be the 5th fastest growing economy in 2010. Last year the magazine predicted Ethiopia as the 4th fastest growing economy for 2009.
The magazine predicts Qatar to top the fastest growing economies in the world with a GDP growth of 24.5% followed by China, Congo (Brazzaville), Turkmenistan and Ethiopia.

In the political sphere, Economist says it predicts political tensions will rise around May election. But, (surprise, surprise) the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front will stay in power. The magazine went on to say, the IMF has rewarded the government's economic management with financial support, and a strong performance in agriculture, the mainstay of the country, will make Ethiopia as one of the fastest-growing economies.

Ethiopia's GDP is expected to reach $35 Billion in 2010 and inflation is estimated at 12%. Kenya which is the biggest economy in East Africa is predicted to have a GDP of $38 Billion in 2010. If Ethiopia's GDP growth forecast is accurate, Ethiopia could soon surpass Kenya, to become East Africa's biggest economy, although the country's GDP per head still lags far behind of Kenya.

December 6th-7th 2009, The Economist will launch a first-ever summit, timed with the publication of The World in 2010. If interested to attend the summit in Washington DC, register here

The economist admiration is simply to encourage the Ethiopian Government to continue their insane selling out Ethiopian lands to feed foreigners while our people are begging from the same people who leased our lands for 100 years for pennies. The fast growing 7% to show up and the birth rate is three times the economic growth and the net effect is starvation and begging around the world. BTW, Ethiopia is breeding kids like mushroom over night and where will be those people to farm and live???

IMF worked hard to push Ethiopian Government to build road infrustractor in order to ship their crops from Ethiopia efficiently to feed their people

I hope this is a true report. If the economy grow 7%, why do we have more 9 millions starved people.

If the economy grow 7% here, we would have a shortage of working people. May be 7% in Ethiopia and here is not the same thing.

Dicator melese may have also paid the Economist to write some good news about Ethiopia.

That's good News, I hope more of us would return and help Ethiopia reach its potential. Most in Diaspora have the burning desire to do just that, but get tangled up in politics - looking for some resolution in that arena. Democracy might come to Ethiopia sooner or later but how long should we be on the sideline waiting for it? In Africa most countries are under dictatorship but that didn't stop other Africans from going back and helping their country. Isn't our responsibility to do what we can to help our fellow Ethiopians? Try a humanitarian approach - there is so much needed in Ethiopia any help is appreciame ted. Stop whining and HELP! trust you will sleep better!

I have no doubt with the statistic of the Economist. As one of the most formidable publications in the World, which does thorough and accurate as well as conservative assessment of economies in the World, no way can we refute its numbers. It is admirable and commendable that the Ethiopian govt is doing somethings right, at the least, to maintain the growth momentum while most of the World is in doldrums. My problem with the govt is that it could have done more. The liberalization should reach the farmlands. It should allow not only massive foreign investors but also farmers property (transferable lease right)so as to unleash their true potential. I was watching a documentary about drought in Wolaita where a farmer who has a farming right to little more than an acre of land with 8 siblings showing his scorched maize to a foreign reporter. I have no doubt that as soon as his 8 children reach adulthood, they will get an eighth of an acre based on the current formula and take a dive in ever more misery. If this guy had a choice he could have gotten rid of his land and join his fellow " Dorze" craftsmen in Ketchene, Addis and do ten times better. For God's sake, EPRDF, give the farmer the property right you are trying to allow foreigners to have and let him decide whether to keep on tilling the land or partially mortgage it to undertake gainful entrepreneurship in the towns and cities. After all, you were country folks who came to town in ' berebaso' and now are indulging " kurt siga' and kitfo a la Gurage. This is my main reservation about this govt. It came from the deep poverty stricken regions of Ethiopia and succeeded somehow. But hell no, the poor farmer, perhaps one of the cousins of powers to be, is not allowed to do what he wants with the land. He cannt mortgage it and get a tractor, neither can he take a loan against it to get a viable concern or buisness in the cities etc etc

So long as this flaud policy of the Eprdf, the farmer will keep on having 8, 12 and even 72 children while city folks have at the most 4 kids. in other words, those in the country side without the light of civilization keep on breeding while boredom breeds more children. There lies the problem in Ethiopia. So long as the regime keeps the farmers in the dark they will keep on breeding from boredom and alike. the regime has tied them in a fraudulent land tenure system where they don't have the right to anything but the plow, for the cow might die of thirst. Shame on this govt for not allowing hard working farmers possess the land they work day and night for keeping them in abject poverty. At the same time, i applaud the regime for tapping into the massive hydroelectric potential. Hooray to Gil gel Gibe I,II.III and IV and now Tana Beles.

We will keep on having this problem so long as we rely on small farmers and not on Kulaks deliver. I guarantee you that there will be 20 million folks needing foreign aid in 5 yrs so long as the fundamental right of the farmer to do whatever his heart desires: mortgage it to buy advanced farm equipment, take a loan against it to open a small buisness, send his kids to school, or sell it outright to move to Cape town, get low cost irrigation schemes etc etc

There is drought everywhere in the World, but the word ' famine' has become synonymous with Ethiopia to our dismay. It Inst that our farmers are lazier than those in Kenya or elsewhere, it is the fact the govt who speaks so much about their God given right to their way of life is depriving them of their God given right to own the land they sweat to tame.

Is the subject economics as such lame science? I thought economics is a science which does not rely on 'yes/true' or 'no/false' observations. How a country which has no basic human needs (food, clothes, electricity, roads, telecommunications, etc) and where these basic needs are declining years after a year could be the fastest growing? What are the yard-sticks to measure economic growth? If the IMF manuplation, and World bank and others debt accuring for next generation is something related to growth, that is ok and we will see who is gonna pay them. I badily need econimist explanation, if growth is something accepting manuplated data without further proof. I am doubting the value of cracking all those calculus and differential equations if what the so called 'economist' is reporting is factual B)

wow wow, what a great achievement for EPRDF and its leadership. I always have confidence in the pro=poor policies of the Ethiopian government. Some toxic diasporas who are siding with the Eritrean regime to distabilise Ethiopia will keep on talking the talk. The EPRDF doeesnt waste its precious time on the talk, rather its walking the walk. The vast majority of Ethiopians are now enjoying the fruits of the economic growth in Ethiopia. The development Ethiopia is witnessing is right there on the ground to be seen, this is not a data on paper. One can simply move around Ethiopia and see the development. The development in housing and construction work, the expansion of road infrastructure, the building of billion dollars woth of hydroelectric plants are few examples. If one visits the service sector similar developments are visible. There are many privately owned banks, colleges and universities, 5 star hotels, schools, hospitals etc. Ethiopia as we speak now is home to more than 23 Universities, lets remember we just had two universities a decade ago.

Ethiopia's government mission in the coming two decades isnt just to be an economic power of eastern Africa, Ethiopia is working hard to move one ladder to join the second world countries. To achieve that we are working hard to be a middle income country. The war against poverty is governments main challenge, and slowly but surely we will triumph against poverty. Ethiopia will continue to grow fast, those countries who see a developed Ethiopia as a threat to their survival can watch us from a distance and cry. Ethiopia has untapped huge water and mineral resources coupled with massive fertile lands. Big commerciall farms are now on the way to start mechanised agriculture with a potentiall to produce surplus products to satisfy local and foreign markets.

I will continue to cast my vote to the EPRDF, go go EPRDF, we will rally behind our developmental government...

Congratulation to all Ethiopians and our leadership.

The economist has been posting posetive data's about Ethiopia for years...well done EPRDF

Also, remember not only is the Economist the bought out of the TPLF, but also most institutions in the UK favor TPLF. TPLF has strong base in the UK, and some body who lives there can tell you that they have lots of companies here operating in the name of some Wolde someboday but actually laundering the money that world tax payers are giving in the name of helping Ethiopian people.

"CAN ANY ONE TELL ME HOW GENINUE THIS REPORT IS"

The Economist is the world's most prestigious and respected magazine. You can still keep your doubt as there is no perfection under the sky but many leaders/politicians/econmists and most important of all inversters relay on the economic and policital report of this Megazine. I have read many comments from big people like Henery Kissenger on the megazine.

"HOW IS A COUNTRY SUPPOSED TO BE THE FIFTH ECONOMICALLY GROING NATION WHILE PEOPLE ARE EVEN STRUGGLING TO EAT ONCE PER DAY......"

I think this is a good question and my understanding is a percentage growth is a growth measured from what the economy had in the past year. Ethiopias 7% growth means Ethiopia will retain her GDP of 2009 and will add 7% more in 2010. (for me i think Ethiopias economy is growing faster than 7% because often this assessements don't include new developments like Tekeze dam and any other new projects entering in to the economy and their impact on economic growth.)

For example if a country have 1000 Dollar GDP and if that economy grow by 10% it means that country GDP reached 1100 Dollar but a 100 growth to another country for example a GDP of 10,000 Dollar will be a 1% growth.

I think you should see now that Ethiopias economy is very very small even if it grow 10% every year it means it is that small economy increasing 10%.

This should tell you how Ethiopia was a very poor economy before this government arrives, still Ethiopian economy is very small but no matter it is growing as fast as it can.

Thanks to his Excellency Prime Minister Meles Zenwie.

economic growth and wealth distribution are quite different things.Initially when the economy is in the take off stage there will be high economic growth but the wealth distribution is not fair. This implies that there may be starvation in the country even if the country economy is growing is growing. So some group of people are impoverished doesnot mean that the country is declining.

Great news, and it will be greater news if we have elected members in the office since it will unit and revamp all Ethiopians to do it for thier country.
We could double up and it will be lasting prosperity and economic growth.

If we let things stay the same with no accountability, no unity, no freedom, and equality then all this growth will go down the drain!

And in few weeks we could see disaster and instability and teh economy will tank!

Some may use it, as wepon to let Meles stay for ever and ever just there is growth.
It is easy to show growth in a country which is at lowest of the world. Let us not use this to say it is Meles! People abroad went back and invested one of them is my own family member who walk in with half a million USA investment which "6M" Ethiopian birr.

When many are spending of course it the growth will be thier.

Should we say then Meles is GOD?

Our tourism industry is rudimentary compared to that of Kenya. Kenya’s tourism industry is organized and controlled by foreigners and from what I understand it has decades of experience, which is absent in Ethiopia.
Ethiopia can be an emerging tourist destination, much more than Kenya, because she has diverse natural beauty, a better climate, wild animals, a lot of history and our EAL which connects Ethiopia to the world.
Ethiopia could be the Mecca of tourism of the horn of Africa and she can easily overtake Kenya within a short period of time, provided that we have the right infrastructures, the right training and of course if we make their stay in Ethiopia enjoyable, avoiding the wrong impression that tourists are their to be exploited one way or the other, by begging, cheating etc.
In addition to everything, the government should learn to be democratic and every corner of Ethiopia should be open not only to foreigners but to every Ethiopian as well irrespective of ethnicity. Ethnic Federal states are not foreign countries, which require visas from other ethnic groups. Some have mistaken the essence of ethnic states in Ethiopia, by avoiding speaking the languages of the other ethnic groups. Everybody is building a wall around itself, which of course will not help in internal tourism.
Tourism is a very big industry. To some countries, the income is equivalent to that of oil. Ethiopia should have tourism as a priority and it should therefore invest to attract more foreign tourists.

I am sorry to say this but one has to be illiterate not to understand or misunderstand this simple numericals. first of all even ethiopia economy grows 100% let alone 7% ethiopia will still be one of the poorest nation in the world because of the low per capita and the countries current and past very low GDP, which means ethiopia is still vulrenable for food shortage and even famine.the statistics is a simple revision of ethiopia GDP growth in a different form. the only news here is the world renowned Economist is buying ethiopias reported GDP growth. of course with a 7% growth one has to be at least 5th.

Omo,

I don't think Tourism is a good way to develop a country. It deprives the local communiteis, it imports all sorts of people, habits, it creates cheap service oriented business (hotel, restaurants) instead of technology and better education and most of all it is seasonal and it is no way to build a stable economy. I am not for it, I have seen what tourism was like in Kenya, it is a disaster. The local communities are not allowed in areas where tourists stay and visit. The coast line was reserved for Europeans alone for the most part. Africans put out much more than they really gain from tourism.

However when I woke up and also read on Reuter news report the following. The global recession has slashed international demand for Ethiopia's agricultural exports and power cuts have ravaged business, fuelling a foreign currency shortage.
So people who are we going to believe?
The pie in the sky or the bare truth.

Tourism,

OK, let's say your comment is positive, but what about Italy, France and Spain, in Europe and Egypt and Gambia in Africa which are great beneficiaries of tourism squeezing out a big coefficient of their national income from the global economy?

It seems to me untrue - guy your argument - when we see the reality on the ground. May be we have to follow the model of developed countries. As an Ethiopian although, with a limited experience of tourism, I feel like a tourist when I am dropped in the sea of tourists: visiting Barcelona, the Pizza tower, Seville, Istanbul, is a life experience. Travel for a few days, thanks to Ryonair and Eurobus and cheap youth hotels, actually every one can use them with meagre resources. Rome, Venice, Paris, Berlin or Amsterdam could make you optimal. I'm a kind of a tourist and believe tis humanity's right to be closer to every society and visit many locales.

Yes, we have to be a good host, yes we don't have to rob tourists, yes spoiled politicians and administrators could alienate the locales. But there must be made safe mechanism to guard the interests of the locales and not exploit and spoil them. Any how I appreciate your remark, Wondim, the locales should not be robbed off their lives. They must have access to work in the resort areas and exercise their right and obligations with dignity. That is how we can create in Africa buoyant cities like Rome and Venice and Sevilla and Barcelona.

Yes at the beginning there are negative sides, but i believe the positive side is bigger. Also don't forget the business that is run In Kenya is owned by the Brits and Asians and has a direct track record of colonial times. I think the business in Ethiopia, is another sort I have no statistics data at my hand, but I think it is owned mostly by Ethiopians or were they Americo-ethiopians or euro-ethiopians, dia-spo-ritas!!

I can understand your reluctance in tourism. Indeed, there is the bad side of tourism as there is the good side. I see Ethiopia somewhat differently from Kenya. I want to believe that we Ethiopians are masters in our homes and I do not believe that there will be places where Ethiopians will not be allowed, simply because they are reserved for tourists.
We can work for the right type of tourists. The young and the irrational will not be travelling to Ethiopia, because Ethiopia does not have seashores, which attracts nudists and other perverts; and such people usually travel with limited amount of money in their pockets. I am somewhat worried about sex tourism, which is a possibility.
Finally, I think that we need tourism as other countries who gain a lot from it and we should not avoid tourism because there is a remote danger to our way of life. Also, service-oriented business is not a bad idea, because the economy of some countries like that of UK, depend to a large extent on services.

This is simply a propoganda of the west. Ethiopia is being prepared to be plundered by the West and East (India and China are the hyenas who are trying to take ethiopian grains for free). Of course the West is eying gold and oil and grains.

Meles Zenawi is paying the Economist. By the way fastes growing Economy is relative to what Ethiopia's economy was. If Ethiopia had only 1000 km of asphalted road and has now 5000 km asphalted road, it has a growth in road construction of 500%. 7% GDP growth, if true is nothing. Ethiopia's GDP was low and the growth is due to some grants from foreign countries. Ethiopia;s budget is depedent on doner countries like Britain, a country which is paralyzing Ethiopia's growth systemically since 1930.

Why is the Economist silent about Nigeria or Zimbabwe? Are these economies not growing? How about South Africa and Egypt?

The Economist's report is a lie. There is some economic movement in Ethiopia, but it does not deserve the Economis's review. The Economist is being bribed the maffia group under Zenawi. I wish Ethiopia has a 7% growth, even mcu less growth say a 2% will a cause to celebrate.

We should not believe anything coming from Meles Zenawi and his henchmen. They are traitors and are ready to give trcts of fertile land to indian and chinese hyenas. Indians know no humanity. They are pagans and even would want to kill others to get their money. We have to stopped the colonization of Ethiopia by indian or anyother foreigners. They have to stay where the came from. We warn all foreigners to keep their hands off ethiopian fertile lands. These fertile tracts of land belong to the ethiopian people and no else will have any right whatsoever to any ethiopian farmland.

We can control the world market by keeping our fertile land in our hands. Zenawi and his henchmen should be brought to justice.

I gave them credit for building infrastructure such as roads, schools, dams etc on unprecedented level. The progress in the country is for all to see. Those trying to rebut all tangible evidence are blinded by whatever motivates them.

My problem is what should this govt do to tackle this problem of drought and the food shortage resulting from it. We cannot tackle this problem so long as the farmer is depending on farming small patch of land to which he doesn't even possess a title. According to study by experts at George Mason university, there lies the problem of tackling the problem. I agree with them 100%.

As to those who are doubting the importance of tourism, they should look at France, USA, Egypt, Spain where tens of millions of tourists flock so much so the Govts of these countries aggressively target visitors. Spain and France alone have over 60 million of these while our country, excluding expatriates probably hosts a quarter of million at best. But for that to happen, We have to open the Gates at Bole to all foreign operators. The current monopoly ( Ethiopian Airlines) is not welcoming to them despite the obvious benefit of competition at Bole. This wont happen so long as the Govt is blinded by ultra nationalist sentiment.

For tourists to flock en mass, we have to teach the locals not to hustle them by accosting these individuals at every corner. of course, we have to tackle the massive beggar problem which is disgusting and not a welcome for those trying to part with their hard earned $$. We cannt forget that there is a lack of food palatable for most tourists save in Addis and some other towns. Injera is good and well for most of us but the majority of tourists aren't used to this exotic food, in spite of efforts in Washington DC and elsewhere. So no doubt we have to address this problem.

We have to be as objective as possible when writing in this forum and give credit where it is due but not forget that more could be done to accelerate the economic progress which is for all to see.

This said, there will always be folks who will need assistance of some sort. There are tens of millions of poor Indians and Bangladeshis who get aid from their govt. Ours is extreme, there lies the problem. So long the Govt which seems to be with us for the foreseeable future, given the disarray of any viable opposition, we have to press them to improve on what has been achieved. That is a matter of national pride and patriotism.

The land tenure system which is in existence since EPRDF toppled The Dergue hasn't worked. It is time to revisit it after all, one has to learn from his/her mistake. If the system didn't work for two decades what makes it any more practical as population explosion is underway! I am pessimist given the stubbornness of those at Arat Kilo, I just pray that they reform before tens of millions of our compatriots will be victims of El Ni no or El Nina which is just a year or two away for Global Warming talks are just talks and no one is serious about remedying their disastrous affect on Nations like ours.

The Economist promotes the Western interest. They also echo the terrorist TPLF's bogus cooked statistics. The West in collaboration with the terrorist TPLF have nothing to show for tens of billions of taxpayers money from back home wasted in Ethiopia for nearly 20 years except bogus statistics. We have been so used to the shameless, barren and never ending lies of the terrorist TPLF for the last 35 or so years that it hardly gets our attention or raises to a level of surprise when the terrorist TPLF tries to lie right in front of our eyes that something that is white is black or something that is black is white. What we are getting used to currently, at least for some of us, however,is the lies of the Western diplomats in Addis Ababa. They always tend to echo the lies fabricated by the terrorist TPLF no matter what the facts are or despite the glaring facts to the contrary on the ground. For instance, a recent report by an international media about the never ending cycle of famine in Ethiopia reads "In Addis Ababa Ethiopian and Western officials voice disapproval of doom-laden reports that fail to acknowledge the progress being made, or the differences in scale between the famine of 1984, which killed a million people, and the situation today. In private they acknowledge that Mr Meles and his Government are deliberately frustrating and delaying official assessments of the scale of the country’s humanitarian needs and blocking access to some areas where the situation is worst. The latest UN estimate, to be released this Friday, is due to revise its figure upwards to nine million for those who will need help. Arguing that the definition of those in need is too broad — it includes those who are in a position to sell assets to buy food — the Government wants to change the way the figures are calculated to reduce that figure to 5 million." The motive for the naked and barren lies of the Western diplomats is crystal clear to every body. They want to hide the facts because they are equally guilty and responsible as the terrorist TPLF is for the untold misery Ethiopia and the Ethiopian people are forced to find themselves in. They have been touting terrorist Meles as a 'democrat, progessive and agent for economic development' for nearly 20 years but the facts on the ground do not support such piling up of praise on a notorious terrorist dictator. To the contrary, the facts keep bubling up to the surface through the blanket of the hugly thick layer of lies, to the dismay and embarassment of the terrorist TPLF and its Western enablers, to tell the world the grim reality in the country. No amount of praise by the Western diplomats can change a brutal terrorist dictator that terrorist Meles is into a democrat. Terrorist Meles was born terrorist, raised terrorist and will die terrorist. The Western diplomats in Addis know full well that terrorist Meles deserves none of the above attributes but they have to do that in order to justify for the money they have been pouring on him to maintain, lubricate, strengthen and update his brutal terrorist repressive machinery against the Ethiopian people. It is not like terrorist Meles juggled the Western diplomats into doing what they are doing to the Ethiopian people today. They are fully aware of what terrorist Meles has been up to for the last 20 years and they are fully aware of what has been going on in Ethiopia all along. These people know full well what they are doing and they are doing what they are doing on purpose and with delibrate motive. The Western officials know full well whatever money their pour on terrorist Meles gets wasted in corruption. They have been colluding with the terrorist TPLF in the corruption of the aid and loan money obtained in the name and on the shoulder of the Ethiopian people. The Western officials are engaged in this repugnant, immoral, unethical and illegal activities in order to get their fair share of the corrupt money that they use to pay up their mortgages in their home countries and to help send their children to school. As long as part of the aid and loan money makes its way back to the personal accounts of these western diplomats, they do not care about the plight of the Ethiopian people and they just keep butressing terrorist Meles with taxpayers dollars, euros and pounds. It is scratch my back and I will scratch yours. The western diplomats are the culprits for the misery of the Ethiopian people including for the never ending perrenial famine in the country. They are guilty and responsible for knowingly aiding, abating and enabling one of the most brutal viciuos terrorist groups like the terrorist TPLF and its ringleader terrorist Meles. Twenty years is a very long time by any standard to effect change and obtain results to show for. Terrorist Meles and his Western collabortors have nothing to show for after nearly 20 years and after wasting tens of billions of dollars except a few kilometers of roads and sporadic and scattered low rise buildings in Addis constructed by Chinese enginers and laborors. That is why the Western officials in Addis have the same personal stakes in hiding the real number of the current famine victims in the country as the terrorist TPLF has. In echoing the dramatically lower number of victims than the real one, the motive of the western officials is as much attempting, albeit in futile, to cover up (CYA in order to CMA) for the terrorist TPLF as for themselves. That is why the western officials keep lying and echoing terrorist TPLF's lies. They are both perpetuators and collaborators in the plight of the Ethiopian people. dere

"although the country's GDP per head still lags far behind of Kenya."

That was the only useful information they tried to hide in the rest of the useless report. The Economist might not come out and directly lie but they do manipulate the numbers to support whatever their point of view is. GDP growth might sound impressive but let us say it is true, our population is growing at over 3% annually which is one of the highest in the world. So even if such growth is occurring, when you factor in the uneven distribution of wealth and population growth it doesn't really mean much in terms of improving the quality of life.

"I like to hear from Psycho prof. Al, what his assesment is from the economist magazine. He is Diasporas mental therapist."

I don't think Al Mariam will temper the Economist Megazine, even if he did it will be very carfully and will not sound like him as he is used in a defamation language in expressing his hate towards the Ethiopian government.

I don't think he is fool enough like "Lalibela [Visitor]" to say "Be vigilant my country men Legese is bribing the Economist." without having any evidence of the Economist Megazine have taken bribe to publishe its report.

Al Mariam knows very well the legal consequesces of such statments. There can be no escape from a criminal and civil liability when freedom of speech or privacy is against the public interest. All freedoms have limitation and stood in the perfect balance of the individual and the public interest, any disbalance in the use of this freedom for sure have consequesces.

For many people opening their mouth without any limit had become the norm at this website but, there are limits to this freedom of speech. In many occasions there are cases where a website owners were ordered by a court to turn over identification information of people who got involved in a defamation activity just like "Lalibela [Visitor]"s alligation of "Legese is bribing the Economist." without having the evidence. Hate, libel and Slander on the web can bring unexpected results. Bad mouthing have an avoidable court costs, ligation and is prosecutable.

I also remember reading a court Procedure in which the applicant was trying to compel Google to identify an author of comments posted, even if comments are posted anonymously.

This is to say that Al Mariam is not a fool to temper with the Economist like he did with the Ethiopian government and one day we also might see the long hands of the law at work on those who open their mouth anyhow without regard of the consequesces of what they are saying.

That is why nazretoch disigned their website to protect themselves by saying below every comment "I am solely responsible for this comment...".

to be on the safe side if you want to avoid court costs, ligation, if you are unsure if what you write is libel, slanderous, prosecutable better not post it on the net.

Without having the evidence in particularly of a big company like the Economist who care about its reputaion and wrongfully accusing it might bring unwanted consequences. Others might not be as gracful as the Ethiopian government is and they might persecute you and Al Mariam is a smart man and he knows with what to play his game of hate.

Indeed... "where is the BEEF?"

If only true, but we all know the tplf thugs paid for this little coverage.

Lets see now. How was 2009 for Ethiopia, a nation that run out of forgien exchange? How did trade go? What is the unemployment rate? Inflation rate? What? No data ANYWHERE, NO REAL DATA. The economy of a nation whose budget is supported by aid money is growing 7%?

I would like to see that be TRUE. We all know woyane/typlf/eprdf lies. A political party that has a thug for a leader and too many names for some to care. I know you woyane supporters are going to blame us who oppose as the diaspora whatever... but hey I hate sahbia, I hate woyane and I hate anyone who lies to Ethiopians who are having a hard time making it through the day. Well, we have our difference of opinions. I do not call you Anti-Ethiopia for supporting the TPLF that helped shabia kill Ethiopians, letting our ports go, destroying our unity by dividing us in to ethnic lienes of killil... I mean I can go on. So, I suggest many here need to stop calloing those who oppose tplf anti-Ethiopian as the name Tplf says more.

All I am saying is do not lie to our poor people about growth they have been lied to enough through out the ages... what they need now is this land selling regime to die and true Ethiopians to take hold of the destiny of the nation. We are headed the wrong way, time for correction. One would think if you havn't done it in 19 years, you've missed the boat. If you held power for 19 years... you are defined as a ... DICTATOR. Im sure you woyane supporters know what that means.

We oppose because we see reality. We oppose because of all the lies this man meles dishes out while he and his goons pile their welth. A nation that is unable to feed its people showing 7% growth? What a crock.

I know you're so tired of the celebrations of this news and unable to enlighten us the miracle behind this news. Is the farm lands lease the reason for the would be growth?
Could somebody tell us what the chinese press is wrting about this news?
I don't know why many are skeptical of the news. For me it's not something I would be surprised about it_as far as I see it doesn't give us any detail information to argue against it. There would be a growth of economy. What many of us don't understand is that statistics is sometimes illussory. Did the news indicate that the economy would grow in a balanced way_how much would be the industrial growth? ..the agricalture?...the service sector...?...
Yes. The so called investment in the agriculture...might bring some growth of the economy.
As some data indicate about 80% of the country's labor force is ...in the agriculture...
What I expect is 90% of that labor would be homeless because of the much talked about land leases...You know why? As we know the ethiopian farmers are engaged in a backward farming. Their income is very meagre. Due to the lease these poor farmers cannot compute with the would be investors products. They cannot even feed themselves(assuming what meles told us is correct_according to him very few are ineed of food assistance). First land rent would be very high. Second, seeds and other necessary inputs would be expensive...The investment in the sector might take 10% of the labor force now engaged in the sector.
Where would the rest of the labor force would go?
meles is inteligent. Who know he is going to industialize the moon.
Then we would expect the fruit of the fast growing economy.
Otherwise be ready for another revolution.
To the skeptics:
Please,please...leave these kids. Let them enjoy the illussion. Those who don't have confidence in themselves always get anoyed of small things. small successes jubilat them . They were smelling (only) gun poweders invain_social elm is gone. Didn't materialize.
You can see this just by checking their arguments. Their main argument is that the diaspora is a hateful and why it doesn't accept such MIRACLE". Can they cite one fact? Not at all. The gun powder has destroyed their brains. I feel sorry when I say this. Because many of them were mislead and joined the struggle.
I hope the new generation won't be a victim of the globalization. We were the victims of the cold war.

They selected a guest chef, Marcus Samuelsson of Aquavit in New York, an American citizen who was born in Ethiopia, reared in Sweden and cooks up melting pots of flavors and cuisines.

And at the tables, the meatless menu included a mix of Indian and American favorites, including some African-American standards. Collard greens and curried prawns, chickpeas and okra, nan and cornbread were served to the 320 guests — including some well-known Republicans and prominent Indian-Americans — who started off with arugula from the White House garden and finished up with pumpkin pie. (After a tasting at the White House on Sunday, the Obamas gave the dishes their stamp of approval, Mr. Samuelsson said.)

IMF and wolrd bank officials always collaborate with dictators in order to get high commision from the money offer to dictators. Imagine if the money alloted to ethiopia (by World bank) be $10 million, then if dictator commision the officials 1-2%, the commisioned money will be $100- 200K. Also take into consideration the number of dictators all over the world. The dictator in turn take 10- 20% of that while the remaining amount of money is distributed hierarchically to governing body till kebele cadres. That is why poors remain poor and corrupted leaders get rich. So the IMF/world bank data quoted by economist is a trading between commissioned body and the dictators. Could this be the explanation? kkkk

"If Ethiopia's GDP growth forecast is accurate, Ethiopia could soon surpass Kenya, to become East Africa's biggest economy, although the country's GDP per head still lags far behind of Kenya."

This is the key part of the report. GDP per head. Who cares if we are the largest but people are benefiting less?

And all these comments on tourism. Let's stop the nonsense. Kenya earns a lot from tourism and we can also get there because both countries are beautiful that offer a lot.

Congratulation to Ethiopia’s Economic Success.
”Ethiopia - 5th Fastest Growing Economy in the World in 2010 – The..Economist”
The November-2010 edition of the Economist came up with a new global economic world forecasts. The Economist forecasted Ethiopia to be the 5th fastest growing economy in the world in 2010.
It’s been some time since we start to hear positive news about Ethiopia’s economic growth. The UK based magazine-The economist has been publishing positive and encouraging report about Ethiopia. Last year the economist predicted Ethiopia to be amongst the top ten fastest developing nations in the world. The same magazine has now predicted Ethiopia to be the 5th fastest growing economy in the world. Congratulation to peace and development loving Ethiopians.
I was surprised to read some comments from the toxic Diaspora’s who blindly refute the data published by the economist and other independent institutions. How can any Ethiopian with a common sense reject such good news from a renowned source. These groups would like to hear negative news about Ethiopia; they always think each and every negative development in Ethiopia is weakening the EPRDF. These groups have failed to understand one basic thing. Ethiopia’s development is not for the benefit of the EPRDF and its supporters alone, its for all Ethiopians irrespective of our political, ethnic or religious background. The roads, electricity, telecommunication, construction and building developments are for all citizens. How can an Ethiopian promote negative image of Ethiopia day in and day out just because they stood against the EPRDF. Opposing all developments for the sake of being an opposition doesn’t help anyone. Its time to wake up and smell the coffee, actually all these positive reports are making the EPRDF stronger and the opposition weaker. Its time to join hands and work for a better Ethiopia. Ethiopians from all walks of life want to see a peacefull, prosperous and united Ethiopia.
This is a great achievement for the EPRDF and its leadership. I always have confidence in the pro-poor policies of the Ethiopian government. Some toxic Diasporas who are siding with anti Ethiopian forces to destabilise Ethiopia will keep on talking the talk. The EPRDF doesn’t waste its precious time on the talk, rather its walking the walk. The vast majority of Ethiopians are now enjoying the fruits of the existing relative peace , stability and economic growth in Ethiopia. The development Ethiopia is witnessing is right there on the ground to be seen, this is not a data on paper. One can simply move around Ethiopia and see the development.
The development in housing and construction work, the expansion of road infrastructure, the building of billion dollars worth of hydroelectric plants are few examples. If one visits the service sector similar developments are visible. There are many privately owned banks, colleges and universities, 5 star hotels, schools, hospitals etc. The numbers of newly established industrial and manufacturing plants is rising. Ethiopia as we speak now is home to more than 23 Universities, lets remember we just had two universities a decade ago. The development in the housing and construction sector deserves mention here. This year alone (2009) the Addis Ababa city government is building 54,000 houses for the poor and middle income residents of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia has never seen such a boom in construction sector in its entire history. The same development is being witnessed in various regions of Ethiopia.

Ethiopia's government mission in the coming two decades isn’t just to be an economic power of eastern Africa, Ethiopia is working hard to move one ladder to join the second world countries in less than two decade. To achieve that the government is working jointly with its developmental partners and the people. The war against poverty is governments main challenge, and slowly but surely we will triumph against it. Ethiopia will continue to grow fast, those groups who see a developed Ethiopia as a threat to their survival can watch us from a distance and learn a good lesson. Ethiopia has untapped huge water and mineral resources coupled with massive fertile lands. Big commercial multi-billion dollar farms are now on the way to start mechanised agriculture with a potential to produce surplus products to satisfy local and foreign markets.

Ethiopians main concern now is to see a developed Ethiopia, we want to see a government that can lift us from abject poverty. We want to see a government that can promote positive image of Ethiopia. These is what citizens want, we citizens of Ethiopia don want to be fed by false promises by these so called opposition groups. The opposition groups should first and foremost learn how to work together. The tendency of creating coalition when election approaches and division after it ends should stop. Ethiopia needs a strong and viable opposition group who can help us to further consolidate the democratisation process.
l will continue to cast my support to the EPRDF as long as it secures peace and development in Ethiopia. As Ethiopia moves in a positive direction the government of the EPRDF will be voted to stay in power. The people of Ethiopia will rally behind the EPRDF. The majority of Ethiopians who live in Ethiopia believe in what they see and not in what they hear from certain groups. Some groups are working hard to destroy Ethiopia’s image, they always preach of doom and gloom hitting Ethiopia. The reality on the ground is however different, the country is consolidating democracy ,development and good governance. If we continue to develop in the same manner which we did in the last 5 years, Ethiopia will be an African success story. We will definitely be the African Tiger economy.

Congratulation to all who are promoting peace and tolerance amongst Ethiopians
regards
Afarman

a GDP growth simply means an increase in service and goods produced in the country compare to the previous year. and unless you have all the information and data as to how the country performed interms of investments, export, tourism and production its very hard for you or any one to counter argue against the economists who have been doing this for years and years. but one thing clear is, the growth is not obviously having any effect on the 13 or so million people who have to get assistance from donors every year.

Dere (Dureto),
You seem as if TPLF has immersed you i abarel ful of hot water! No matter how long your writing, may be it is full of trash. No one can learn any thing from your trash. The hate and ignorance your brain is washed with, can be non of a viable solution for Ethiopia and Ethiopians at all. Whether you like it or not, EPRDF has transferred Ethiopia from the 2nd poverty country in the world during the dergu ( your) era to the the fivth growing economy of the world. I am not saying the fivth rich economy of the world. You feel Ok if you hear misery in your own country hoping that you may come back to power? No way !!! Your time is already gone. The more Ethiopia becomes economical stronger, the more stays ePRDF in power, and the the farther goes power from you and your alikes. The more Ethiopian development is witnessed through ( Universities, Hydro electric power projects, Roads, and other infrastructures), the loudest you will cry and consequently you will die of heart attack. You are blind to witness any of the strides the courageous EPRDF party has brought to our country, because you are full of haterd and ignorant. As for PM Meles Zenawi, he is leading not only Ethiopia, but also the whole Africa in discussions of international arena like that of in the coming environmental discussion in Copenhagen.go and cry there as usual, you will be hunted this time not only by EPRDF supporters, but by all Africans who are proud of the Icon visionary, eloquent and far sighted leader PM MELES ZENAW !!!!!! GOD BLESS ETHIOPIA AND EPRDF!!!!

One thing we all need to know is economy could grow specialy when you start from bottom like we did. Mengistu who is communist and do not care about economy as long as he is in power and no one challenge him from with in or out to take over land or power.

Growth is good, but there is diffence what kind of growth it is.

Many trees will be planted and most of them grow, but some are bent and not balanced. They may look good at the beginnig until they become dangerous for the properties around them and for themselve that thir root may not be going strait down and spread to gain strength.

Meles is a bent up tree. The economy growth is not healthy and inclusive to all Ethnic. They also would not last. The longer it takes to straiten them by electors by being accountable the more dangerouse they will be.

We are happy for the growth, but I hope it si more inclusieve and accountable.

The most difficult move to make is choosing political parties that can be trusted. We really need to understand which party has the most defined clear and articulate agenda that convinces average true Ethiopians and how they are going to achieve there struggle. But for now DERGE, SHABIA, OLF … and all kind of spoiled dirty scam bags can not be dictating us just because they are opposing Weyane’. I will rather stick with Woyane and there dirty politics until positions tolled us who they are and why we have to support them.
