Ethiopia - A Guide to install Amharic Windows Vista LIP by nazret.com

If you like your Windows Vista in Amharic (the official working language of Ethiopia) then you can download the latest Windows Vista Language Interface Pack (LIP) now and we have got the instructions as well.

nazret is pleased to announce that we have successfully tested the recent release of Amharic Language Interface Pack by Microsoft for Windows Vista. As you may have heard by now, Microsoft along with Addis Ababa University have developed the language interface for Ethiopia's official language and is now available for install.

We have created a step-by-step guide on how to install the pack and configure your Windows Vista to display menu and commands in Amharic. The language pack is available for Windows 7, but we don't have the download location and will let you know as soon as we know about it.

In less than 30 minutes, you can install the LIP and have your PC speak with you in Amharic ;) which has its own script.

Here is how to get started. Get the language pack from microsoft.

የWindows Vista የቋንቋ ኢንተርፌስ ጥቅል (Language Interface Pack) በሰፊው የሚጠቀሙባቸውን አካባቢዎች በከፊል ተረጉሞ Windows Vistaን ያቀርባል። ከተቀመጠ በኋላ ዊዛርድ ላይ ያሉ ጽሁፎች ፣ የዳያሎግ ሳጥኖች ፣ ምናሌዎች ፣ እርዳታና ድጋፍ የሚያቀርቡ ርእሶችና የተለያዩ የተጠቃሚ ኢንተርፌስ አይነቶች በየቋንቋ ኢንተርፌስ ጥቅሉ (LIP) ቋንቋ ይታያሉ። ያልተተረጎመ ጽሁፍ በመሰረታዊው Windows Vista ቋንቋ ይቀመጣል። ለምሳሌ የስፓኒሽኛ የ Windows Vista እትም ገዝተው የካታላንን የቋንቋ ኢንተርፌስ ጥቅል ብታስገቡ አንዳንድ ጽሁፎች በስፓኒሽና ይቀራሉ። ተጠቃሚዎች በፈለጉት ቋንቋ የተጠቃሚ ኢንተርፌሱን ለማየት ተጨማሪ የቋንቋ ኢንተርፌስ ጥቅሎች ማስገባት ይችላሉ።

የሲስተም መስፈርቶች

* የሚሠራበት ኦፕሬቲንግ ሲስተም፡- Windows Vista

• Microsoft Windows Vista

• የተጠቃሚ ኢንተርፌስ በእዚህ ቋንቋ፡ እንግሊዘኛ

• 4.63 ሜባ ባዶ ቦታ ለማውረድ

• 15 ሜባ ባዶ ቦታ ለማስገቢያ

የሚሰራበት ምድረኮች: የቋንቋ ኢንተርፌስ ጥቅሎች (LIPs) የሚሰሩት በ32-bit የWindows Vista እትሞች ሲሆን በቀዳማዊ የWindows እትሞች ወይንም 64-bit የWindows Vista እትም ላይ አይሰራም።

መመሪያዎች

1. በዚህ ድረ ገጽ ላይአውርድየሚለውን አዝራር በመጫን የመውረድ ተግባሩን ማስጀመር ይቻላል። ይህንም ካልፈለጉ ከዝርዝሩ ሌላ ቋንቋ መረጠው ይህን አዝራር ይጫኑሂድ.
2. ከሚከተሉት አንዱን አድርጉ፡
* አሁኑኑ ማስቀመጫዉ ለማስጀመርክፈትተጫን ወይንምይህን ፕሮግራም አሁን ካለብት ቦታ አንቀሳቅስ .
* የሚወርደውን ጥቅልን በኮምፒዩተርዎት ላይ በሌላ ጊዜ ለማስገባት ይህን ይጫኑ፡አስቀምጥወይንምይህን ፕሮግራም በዲስክ አስቀምጥ .

If you don't see where ethiopia is heading now, you will never see it.I don't think people realize how this would change Ethiopia and it's influence in the region. just wait and see.
whatever happened to Ethiopia's disintegration in a matter of weeks as we were told 12 years a go by the ginuise Erittean in Asmara seems to have no answer to why the opposite is happening. Ethiopia achieving a technoligy based common langaug is definatly not what he was hoping for. but here it is, soon we will scrab the Article 39 which we used to justfy their removal from beautiful Ethiopia. why can't they use respect words like Yewtu instead of Wuta!, Wuta is for dog. if they use 'Yee' like Yeegbu, Yewtu, etc addresses both gender and older people. The problem is Ethiopians translate English language direct to Amharic language or viseversa.

Although i'm pleased to see Microsoft having vista window on Amharic as it will Ethiopia's emerging economy into the 21 century, but the Amahric language is maybe nou suitable as it only addresse's the Male subject. my councern is how our daughters will take being addressed as a male, for instances: the instruction to save any open file before exiting goes: (zegteh ke'mewtateh befet) as suppose to if you are female (zegtesh kemewetatesh). But, regardless Addis Ababa university need to be appreciated for their hard work, and if it could be patented need to take the legal frame work before implementaion specially knowing our sworn enemies from eritrea will be benificiary too, since they too still using the amharic(ethiopic)alphabet there.

I installed the LIP on my laptop. It is a bit confusing, at least for now, until we get use to it.
I wonder how they will deal with the gender. With the current pack, everyone who is using a computer is assumed as a male user.

[XP is a great OS and far from being obsolete, but the above language pack is for Vista only according to Microsoft. If anyone knows where to download for XP and Windows 7, it is very much appreciated. We are searching and as soon as we know where to download for those OS, we will update it here.]

It is a great leap toward introducing information technology to the Ethiopian people. Is it me or the strange use of the language? Some how I feel there must be better words or phrases to use than the ones I saw in the guide. It may be a matter of adaptation. But I can't proceed without mentioning the fact that to me the word "ተወው" by itself sounds vulgar.

It is a great thing that an Ethiopian language is also the language of the internet. However, the weird thing, as many have already pointed out, is that some of the words used are indeed unusual and perplexing. Excuse me, but I cannot help but laugh, when I read some of the words, because they sound funny. I was expecting that members of the AAU would have done more research in the choice of some of the key words that help in surfing through the World Wide Web. Nevertheless, we are all happy and rejoicing. It is a great achievement by our people and Microsoft. I am sure that with time, it will be refined and it will be more attractive and practical.

At first I was also wondering about the word "Shengur" but it is there in Amharic most commenly as "Shenkur" or "Meshenkor" is like "mezgat". I believe I read in Amheric novels the word "Mehernkor" used to mean to close a door or gate. It is a much better word to say close "Shengur" than to say "Zega" which can be offensive.

Shengur comes from "meshegor", and it means "to lock". Rural huts have these things called "meshengoriya".

About the gender: this is JUST STUPID! Nokia made the same mistake.

There are two possible ways of going around the problem
1) Use the infinitive: instead of 'zegteh wutta', they could say "zegto lemewttat' (implied: "click here to do this")
2) Use the polite form: the problem with this is that it might be unpopular with young users.

Personally, I prefer the first option.

All said: this is a great leap forward. I hope Melles will not try to take credit for this (like the joke "EPRDF should be thanked for the good rains this year")

It is a good start to integrate the language in the ICT and digital world. It is a good progress.
The amharic language serves both sex equally referring to feminine and masculine.
There is no problem in writing the language using personal computer.
I appreciate many developers that have designed and applied a variety of Amharic fonts.
I doubt whether the Addis Abeba University engaged with this job seriously.
The Addis Abeba University language institute has had translated scientific words like physics, chemistry,biology as well as mathematics some years ago into Amharic.
It was appreciable. It was a master performance.
where did those professionals go?

In spite of it, I appreciate also now Microsoft and AAU men.

I suggest the translation should be modified or improved.
For me this is a Beta version, the next version would be an RC(release candidate) then the Amharic home premium or enterprise version,ultimate version, etc. should come out.

In order for the translation to be accurately developed:
a) geez language speaker
b) Amharic language professional
c) IT professionals with fluent Amharic language skill.

The above professional should sit together and work out, then they can create satisfactory release.

Keep up the good job!
within a year we could see the revised edition-operating system in Amharic

A big step forward, very nice! However, the wording could have been done better especially if they had invited people(for instance profs from aau's language department) to contribute. If anyone cares to ask, i think the editors in Deje-Selam can contribute better interpretation too. Their precise Tirguame has always amazed me. Or anyone with a good knowledge of the Geez language can do it. For instance "Shengur" can be replaced easily by the more familiar word "Qolif/Kolif", File can be replaced by "Mahider" and so on. Btw, i think by "Shengur" they are meant "Shegur", it is the verb (Gis) form of the noun (Sim) "Meshegor". You guys never heard of the word Meshegorya? Am sure those from kifleHager especially from the north know what i'm talking about. Anyway, I'm not a user of vista the sucker therefore will not enjoy an Amarigna OS.

I am so much pleased to hear the long awaited good news, thanks to Nazret.com. What I noticed from various comments on this page, is the concern of the readers about the gender issues regarding the transcription of the dialog commands. Those who've been working on this 1st edition didn't pay enough attention on the grammatical rules. They just made a word-to-word translation. And to make matter worst, they used word like "SHENGUR" instead of "QOULF" or "YIQOLFU". Nevertheless, I have found that the final outcome is very interesting. Now I would like to pledge the Nazret website editor to intercede, in the name of the readers, with the AAU philology Department and the Microsoft Editor to rectify these problems of our concern, and make sure that the necessary correction shall be done on the next (2nd) Amharic edition. Where can we make our concerns regarding the changes that need to be made? As some have suggested some of the words used are not suitable. For example instead of saying "wuta" (Exit) (Yewtu) would be more suitable for both male and female. The can also use "Yekolef" (Exit) instead of "shengur". I am sure there are more words that need some improvements. Where do we go to address these changes and hopefully get an updated version soon. If you know please let us know so we can do our part. Amharic is not for Amharas only. Those who worked so hard on the project to get it where it is now are not all Amharas. Every developed country has its own version of windows. If you can have it in Arabic, then why not in Amharic??
Wether you like it or not the offical language in Ethiopia is Amharic and this program is to be used in Ethiopia, it may not be that useful to someone like me who lives in the US. Regardless, it is a great product. I saw some great comments from ppl in here, and i am sure the developers will take those comments and improve on those things when the next version comes out.
