If initial reports were to be believed, the patriarch of the Orthodox Church of Ethiopia would have unveiled the Ark of the Covenant by now. Friday June 26, is almost over in Ethiopia. According to one blogger's account, it appears there is some misunderstanding between what was first reported in Italian and later translated to English. It appears that, adnkronos, the Italian paper that first reported the news, run a clarification in Italian, which you can read here.

Here is what Abuna Pauolos has said as reported in adnkronos

The story has generated huge interest in cyberspace which caused nazret's server to crash several times, we had a huge traffic spike that crippled our server in the past 24 hours. So there you have it, The Ark of the Covenant will NOT be revealed.

Now the other story, perhaps of interest to Ethiopians is, did Abune Paouls really see the Ark of the Covenant? Or is that a misunderstanding as well?

I am sure those who kept it hidden for centuries had a good reason of their own to keep it as such.

I am sure there is a culture that implies that something kept from the public eyes will be endeared and valuable to those who want to dream about it. There are many things in the world on the ability of the common man that keeps a thing secretive and more important when it is hidden - like love.

When I read about this I thought some one is trying to play business - to commercialize the existance of 'the Arc ' that is allegedly Menelik - Solomons's son out of wed lock brought to the country with out the knowledge of his father the king and from that time own the priests of the ancient time were standing gurard on it and this was taken over by the latest faith group who inherited three generations of faith - a bit of Judaism, some of the rutuals before Christianity and the one before that.

This makes the Ethiopian Orthodox Church following special. Very different from thei other Orthodox Coptic Christians in Egypt or in Russia, in general East Europe.
I do not know if that is good or bad thing.

I do not thing it is a good thing, though to commercialize a symbol of faith like what has happened with the Christmass holiday . It became more of target of profit making rather than a token of worship.

I say "bravo" to Aba Paulos for not exposing the hidden jewel and stay out of poletics because its no good for "man of God" to mess up in poletics because poletics is the art of manipulation.

What a relief? Probably the ark itself is doing its miracle. The display would have been the biggest mistake woyane has done similar to the loss of Assab. It looked like these guys were undoing Ethiopia altogether. I thought no matter what difference we may have in politics, or material gains, when it comes to our beliefs, respect to our churches, tabots tsilats, history, we should not have one. I still believe that the news was true but probably the decision was reversed by getting some advices from their own christian elders.

It is amazing some were happy to display this treasure very much connected to the history of the nation itself and keep it on garage sale like their mom's used underwear. Some ignorant suggest this treasure belongs to certain tribe and said they can do whatever they like with it. This Ark and Ethiopia had low and high points in their history. Many have sacrificed themselves to protect it from so many enemies of Ethiopia from Jew, Muslims, Christians, pagans etc.

Ethiopia and the ark with mysterious history have existed until now passing so many up and dawns thanks to our ancestors who believe the ark itself as the guardian for Ethiopia.

I wouldn't be surprised if few fellow Ethiopians disrespect the history of the nation itself and its values, and believes because even a wheat field has so many weeds I see them as weeds. It is a miracle the weeds are ashamed now and the believers rejoice that the tsilat will remain sacred.

what makes this ARK of the covenant the most powerful object in the world is because the holy and most mighty names of God have been inscribed on every conrner of this object and 24 gem stones with inscription of the name of God and some images are on the gold plated Ark which gives it the divine power to do anything in the name of God Lord Sabaoth.having said all these by the profecy of our fore fathers is that the one who is going to come to the nation to lead with the rod of moses is the one who is going to use the wisdom associated with it which is called the divine wisdom and which ultimately lead this impoverished nation to a super power role not by attacking nations like others do it by their weapon but by being a nations of priests and praisers of God's holy name which will eventually lead to the becoming economic superpower of the whole african nation and that particular land specially.

Now, please children of God in the holy covenant, please listen when God is speaking, you are not supposed to fight one another, as moses said to the children of Israel, "have faith and stand still, don't fight the lord will fight for you & you shall see the salvation of the lord sabaoth"
so please the new Israel (spirtual Israel) don't fight, your new leader is arranging himself with the divine wisdom and he will march soon and after that like you heard it in our forefather's tales, Ethiopia will be a super power nation to the disbelief of the whole wide world.

I am so relieved to hear that the head of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church - The Abuna finally came to his sense and at the last moment changed his mind to show off the Ark of Covenant. There is no update to the unveiling of the supposed Ark from the time of Moses, and there may never be. Someone at the Ethiopian Orthodox Church made big mistake, or participated in a big sham – as in "a false show of something".

I will be surprised if the Ethiopian church officials unveils anything except, perhaps, more false promises and execuses. The way I see it, as long as the church keeps the mystique of the Ark aflame it has something that attracts attention and can be used to raise funds. If they show the supposed "Ark" and experts denounce it as a fraud, the mystique carefully cultivated over the decades and centuries vanishes – and so do the funds and worldwide attention. Putting it plainly, showing ithe "Ark" is not competible with telling the truth.

But correction on the 10% part. Seriously. We actually give so much more. Belive me tithing 10% just pays the church bills. We're talking about 4000 congregation on a typical Sunday! Even the ushers are under the Church's payroll nowadays.

Well, most of the CONFUSED TYPES are prone to worshiping whatever is in fashion. It is a truth that needs to be stated.

Today they are Meserete Kirstos, tomorrow they are Jhovah Witness, the next day they are Bahai, etc... religion is simply a fashion statement. Thank God that Diabelose changed his mind. I am sure they were testing the water to see how Ethiopians would react on this matter. The sad thing is that more than our brothers and sisters of Muslim faith, it is the Evangelical Christians who always try to discredit Ethiopian Orthodox Church. Evangelical Christian Missionaries come to Ethiopia to convert Orthodox Christians to their religion than they come to convert Muslims. In order to complete their mission they turn people against Ethiopian Orthodox religion to the point of hate and disrespect. One of those an Ethiopian Evangelical Christian who was converted told me once that he would rather warship a tree than being an Ethiopian Orthodox Church worshiper. I am positive he is not the only one out there who believes this way.

I am not a regular churchgoer or who wares his/her religion on their sleeves, but in my case my faith, my religion, my tradition is part of me and I am who I am because of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church that I grew up with. The memory of Ethiopian Orthodox Christmas, Ethiopian Orthodox Timket, Ethiopian Orthodox meskel, Ethiopian Orthodox fassica, is part of the memory of my family gathering and celebration that I grew up with that gave me a never lasting memory. If you expect me to respect your religion and your tradition, please be respectful of mine as well.

I recommend a book about the ark published in 1992 by Graham Hancock titled “The Sign And The Seal”.

I am so amazed by peoples ignorance, why do we always misconstrue the reality. Whenever we hear something, we rush to associate it to the governent and to the ppl of Tigray.. I really am concerned about us Ethiopians being as loving, caring, hospitable as we are always refered to. How can we love others if we can not love our own? Why are we trying to divide eachother. If u guys think that the government is dividing us in Ethnicity, then dont follow their footsteps and do worse... try to be strong enouught to be true Ethiopians and continue on loving and have that true Ethiopianism. Have that strong sense of belongingness. .

Safudangna, who ever u are, try to make some sense... are u trying to be funny? boooooooo man!! to begin with, when u try to crack a joke, distinguish between what is laughable and whats serious matter... ppl are talking about Religion, the ark is a very sacred thing for those who belive in it so try to be respectful, so does the others who try to make fun of it. Ppl pls when we try to comment or pass some kind of information, lets comment only what we know.. just dont write for the sake of writing.. this is not English 101!

Be respectful of ur culture and dont open doors for others to attack us.

I proclaim my faith where ever I go, whatever I do. I am what they call a "Jesus Freak" or a "Bible thumper". I wear my faith on my sleeves - as you put it. I am not ashamed of my lord. My T-shirt, my keychains, my bumper sticker , my cubicle. It's all about Jesus.

But all these flashy statement doesn't mean a squat if my conduct doesn't compliment it. That is why I respect people in immense manner. I don't undermine their religion or custom. It's one of the quality that people who profess to follow Christ have. It comes with His grace.

I have best friends in all walks of life. Orthodox, Catholics, Jews, Moslems and even atheists.

Yes I argue. I put forth reasons why certain intuitions in Islam or Orthodox or Catholic or Jehovah witness, don't accede to the simple truth that I know. I argue with priests and deacons alike. Most of the time, I am the one who get the verbal abuse. But I don't mind it.

I love it when Jehovah Witnesses and Mormons come knocking at my door because I argue with them for hours, red-circling all the faults in their convictions without them calling me names or flipping me the bird.
I agree:
Instead of handing out bibles, evangelist tend to apply elbow grease to convert people. You can't do that in Christianity. Witness to them so that you can transfer the word and leave.

You can't even convert your own kids.

I know and witness it everyday that people in my own church treat the orthodox church and its worshipers with lack of reverence.

I hope you find in your heart to forgive them.

Next time you encounter one, sit down and have a conversation with him. Defend your religion if you are convicted to its truthfulness.

That is what I do to mine.

As for whitewashing, both Christians and Muslims have always been notorious when it comes to cultural and religious imperialism; starting all the way back to the high and middle age. They destroyed anything ( regardless of its historical value)that they thought was pagan and forced monotheism. What you see some Evangelists do today, even though I don't condone it, is nowhere close to that magnitude.

Look, I will probably argue against soliciting archangel Gabriel or the mother of our lord or any of the saints, for atonement of your sins, when you can directly go to your father our God, but I will never argue for destroying the church or undermining the worshipers. Because let's face it, one of us is saying the truth. We can't both be saying the truth. it's mathematically impossible. The question is which one of us is really saying the truth. That will be left for Him.

As for Gate and Buffet, our bible tells us that nothing you do without faith impresses God. But then again I am sure His grace antecedents all good gestures.

You know I have heard of people like that but never have I encountered one yet. You have to know that people tend to live such idiosyncratic life because of the deep rooted physiological problems. It is an alarm intended for any God fearing individual to come to their help. Most of the time these people are suicidal.
A senior pastor of some church in Chicago once said
"We tend to focus on the shock of the tire blowing out, but in reality there were a lot of maintenance issues that preceded the flashing lights and flares by the side of the highway."

as for the tithing...I have also heard about churches who like to shove the offering tray at you and won't leave until you put some money in it. They roll their eyes and embarrass you in front of the congregation if you decided to "shove" the tray back...etc but you have to know tithing has to be done with cheerful mind. If you don't have it, God knows you don't have it and please , please don't give a penny. Some just do it to impress others, or some are just brainwashed into giving ... they might as well flush their money down the toilet because God won't accept that kind of offerings. If you suspect that the pastors are having a blast out of the offerings (which I very much doubt), then don't give to the church, help the hungry children in Africa or visit the sick or shelter the homeless. You can do many other things.

Look, whether you are a Miaphysitist or Dyophysitist or whether we argue on salvation by faith or attonment of sins, there is one fundamental truth to all the Christians: Matthew 7:5

You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.

Thanks Pente, you raised a good point.
Some people give offering as a means to twist God arms into fulfilling their wish. "God I gave the church everything I owned, now it's your time to do this for me"

Some give as an ultimatum. "Lord, if you do this for me, I will give the church this much"

Some are just showoffs. "I tithe more than 10% of my income to this church. They are literally live off my money"
Some are outright gullible and they think they have to give because the pastor sweet talked to them into it.

God does not look on outward appearance, but judges by the heart. If you are any of the above, God doesn't want your money. He owns your money. He wants your obedience.
Give because you "want to" .... but please don't waste your hard earned money if you think that you "have to".

I have even heard some fools say it's a sin to file for tax deduction of the money they give to the church. Don't be fooled. It's charity and you will get up to 40% of it back ....It's God's way of "distributing the wealth". So make sure you get a reciept. If you don't want the money, at least file your tax, get your money and feed a hungry child with it or give it back to the church.

Last but not least: Please stop the hating. We are all one nation and brothers and sisters in Christ.

Trust me, I have no hate towards anyone; I am grateful to God that he has given me a kind, loving and compassionate heart. Just like you, I am always eager to listen and see what people have to say and do about their religion. I find it very interesting and I have met all kinds of people from all walks of life and learn with respect about their religion and culture.
More often I am more disappointed with self proclaimed Christians than other religions. I could be wrong but I strongly believe that memorizing the word of God from Genesis to Revelation and jumping and saying Father God, Father God or worshiping on a different day is not the road or the steps to Christ but what is in one’s heart and what that person does with it.
I know no one is perfect but Jesus, still some people think knowing all the bible verses or joining and converting to another church is going to give them a ticket to heaven; and I am afraid they are highly mistaken unless they changed their evil ways. I have yet to find that self proclaimed Christian man/woman with a tiny quality of Jesus Christ who obeys not some but all the Ten Commandments that makes him/her kinder and gentler than others in everyday life. I have met some of those self proclaimed Christians who try to convert African people to their religion as long as you don’t come to their country and buy a house next door to them and be their neighbors.
Please don’t get me wrong I am not saying I am perfect but I never claimed to be a better Christian than others. I respect you for what ever you choose to believe and I expect the same respect in return.
