Ethiopia has arrested 35 people suspected of a coup attempt allegedly backed by Dr. Berhanu Nega, an Ethiopian economist now living in the United States

Ethiopian authorities have arrested 35 people suspected of involvement in a plot to overthrow the government. Those arrested are said to be followers of an exiled opposition leader living in the United States.

Government spokesman Ermias Legesse says the 35 arrested included two groups, one comprising soldiers and another that included civilian government employees and others. He tells VOA police found weapons and other incriminating evidence when they raided the homes of suspects. "We have got information from different people and we investigate it, and we have gone to the court and the court gave us an allowance to go to their home and we have checked their home and we have arrested 35 people and in their home we have got so many weapons, landmines, soldier uniforms, and their future plan what they want to do," he said.

All those arrested are said to be members of a group called "Ginbot 7," or "May 15th", which is the date of Ethiopia's disputed 2005 election. Ginbot 7 is led by Berhanu Nega, who was elected mayor of Addis Ababa in the 2005 election. But he never took office.

He was jailed and convicted of treason along with more than 100 other opposition leaders in connection with violent post-election demonstrations in which nearly 200 protestors were killed. He and the others spent 20 months in prison before being pardoned.

After his release, Berhanu went to the United States, where he is currently a professor of economics at Bucknell University in Pennsylvania. A page on the university Web site says he has urged the United States and other western nations to back democratic movements in Ethiopia and other African countries by withdrawing support for dictators.

Opposition Web sites such as "Ginbot 7' are blocked in Ethiopia. Berhanu has in the past accused Prime Minister Meles Zenawi of creating a one-party state.

In a telephone interview, government spokesman Ermias described Ginbot 7 as an illegal organization. "It's not registered as a legal party, and not recognized by the government. It is an illegal party. The groups and the party, who are an illegal party, we call it Ginbot 7. That's our issue," he said.

Ermias declined to say what charges would be filed against those arrested, saying that would be up to the Justice Ministry. He also declined to identify any of the suspects. He said they would all be brought before a judge within a few days.

The arrests come as Ethiopia is beginning preparations for its next parliamentary election in May, 2010. With a little more than a year until election day, most political observers consider the ruling Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front an overwhelming favorite to sweep the polls.

Party officials have said one of their top priorities will be preventing the kind of violence that marred the 2005 vote.

In local and bi-elections elections last April, opposition candidates won only three of approximately 3.6 million seats being contested. The annual U.S. State Department human rights report was highly skeptical about whether the results accurately reflected the will of the Ethiopian people.

“Changing the government in an unconstitutional way” will be a commonly used rhetoric by the regime in Ethiopia as we approach the elections of 2010. This is a very handy and an effective weapon at its disposal to incarcerate, intimidate and block the way of the opposition, in case it might challenge its power. It has used it once in 2005, and surely, it will use it again and again. A woman was accused and put in prison because, as alleged by the regime, single-handedly she was caught trying to overthrow the regime in an unconstitutional way, and this time, 35 people are incarcerated on same allegation. It is easy for the regime to present false witnesses and proofs. These allegations show that it is even scared of its own shadows.

TPLF/woyane is already at work to avoid the mistakes of 2005, when it was wrongly confident enough to give a platform for the opposition to present its political programs to the Ethiopian voter. This time it is not going to make the same mistake again. The regime knows very well that Ethiopians dislike and do not trust it. That is why Birtukan Mideksa and others are in prison; and we will be seeing many more Ethiopians ending up in Kaliti, Zwai and many other secret prisons all over the country.

The lies of the regime and the naivety of the professor, if indeed he tried to overthrow the regime by himself, which I doubt a thousand times, make the political life in Ethiopia as disappointing as it can ever be. If the professor is an amateur politician, who does not understand that the ground is not yet ripe in today’s Ethiopia for a universal upheaval of our citizens to confront the dictatorial regime, then, the opposition is nothing else but an already failed group of people that are blinded by personal ambitions.

Now, where is the scattered and weak opposition? Time is flying out of its reach, and it is still trying to learn the ABC of inter-party cooperation, integration and solidarity for a common cause, almost twenty years after TPLF/woyane came to power and divided our people among ethnic/tribal lines, a thing that was soon adapted happily by the Ethiopian elites. These elites are as divided today as they were before. Their obsession with ethnic feelings rather than a national Ethiopian feeling, the choice to remain divided for the sake of personal political, economic and other benefits, the suspicion for each other and their inability to present themselves to western powers as a united front that acts as the other alternative to the dictatorial regime, have become their Achilles’ heals. The opposition should first look at its weaknesses and its failures before it blames the west for its stand on Ethiopian political affairs. The incompetence of the opposition and the disoriented LFs are the major forces that keep the dictatorial regime in power. The opposition should know that a bad solution is better than no solution, and the scattered opposition in its present form is a no solution for Ethiopia.

But what would be the reaction of old aged arch oppositions such as OLF which has mass support of all Oromos and many peoples in Southern Ethiopia, and ONLF who is totally anticenterist politics and anti to any kinds of political arrangment?

I think TPLF calculus has already put all machines in place to supress basic agendas of those oppositions, even if there are inconsistence in the implementation and violence which are product of such inconsitence. Southern people is good example. The region still needs political restructuring/self-determination as some ethnic groups still denied their right to develop their language and culture, for example Gewadas in Konso and Derashe special woredas whose request for special woreda led to death of about 35 people last year (see 107th epecial report of Ethiopian human rights of 2008).

Opposition say "tribalism"(sic) is a problem, but the problem is that it is not implemnted dully in all regions. No alternative is available to Ethiopia at this moment of elitist based politics. It is natural that people who affected by Ethnic federalism continue to make trouble as far as it is the norm of the country. oppositions to such arrangment continue to face problem from groups who benefit in such arrangment. There is no class politics in Africa as in west. It is either ethnic based or nationalist. The problem is that both groups want to live at the expense of other while the two concepts are reality as far as different ethnic groups live together forming a state. It already assumed a diacotomus status in 1960s when self-determination was the norm of the day and continued to dominat international politics until recent past.

Thus i think oppositions that fail to move mass go no where. Ethiopia has still 75% uneducated or illiterate people who move as the elitist politics move in the centre with no say of their own.

I think if governemnt and all oppositions invest in adult education like education campaign of Derge, it would bring a big change to politics of ethiopia as people can easily decide their fate.

A further chaos in ethiopian politics enhance the suffering of the masses than add any new benefit to them. Masses does not need violence or armed struggle or coup to change their life, they already suffered a lot under various regime.

Even in current context peasant support government becuase of their mentality that governemnt is assigned by God and opposition to it is anti-God works is dominat in many parts of Ethiopia especially in northern Ethiopia. It seems opposition has not realized that they are detached from masses to whom they try to represent. They do not have dialogue with them. That is why oppositions is active in urban areas and among diaspora.

In Ethiopia history, there was no case that power achived by the support based on urban and diaspora masses. Diaspora politics was dominat in 1960s and 1970s. But it contributed to bloodshed to the masses as blood thresty soldiers dismantled diaspora politics in "Red-white terror drama". Power in Ethiopia is continue to be achived through bullet as far as its people are uneducated or illiterate.

Therefore, i recieve all this news as a game between ruling politicans who are not willing to educate the masses about the politics (civic education is a goood means but it is marred by disagreement on the multicultural order of the country) and immature oppositions who lacked means to bring real change in the country or who failed to go with reality in the country. The game does not cook bread to the masses.

How can his party become legal in Ethiopia while they putt him in jail because of he has won the election. Do they think the world don’t get it.

The only thing Ethiopians have to do is coming together as one people including those from tigry. They are the one giving all powers these few x TPLF gangs have. Ethiopians as one people need to have vision, trust one another, commitment and being vigilant knowing the woyane insects are among them. Even if these facts have done accordingly, it would fasten the dawn fall of these x TPLF insects.

I don't support Birhanu, but accusing him, as a terrorist is just a child game. It makes no sense at all. No one believes it. It is their dirty game as usual accusing anyone they fear and one way or another eliminating him from the earth. I really admire the Prof’s visions. He is ideas it might working in Ethiopia but a people like Hailue shawel,the majority Ethiopians we’re not buying. Who saved it? Birhanu Nega. He destroyed Kinijit in prison and then he signed and asked forgiveness to be released from prison while thousands kinijit followers staid in prison, many were disappearing, others lost their job, many were suffering from sustainable injury and others have died.

Do you remember him in USA after prison? He and his similarities are the cancers for democracy, unity and patriotism in Ethiopia. I know very deeply, he will never ever be useful for Ethiopia; in contrary. The Ethiopian people also know that.

If the Ethiopian govt care about the people, they have to look the whole situation from different angles. Those so called 35 terrorists (the truth is they are not terrorists) must be treated accordingly. These people are victims to evils like Birhanu who run from prison and the people and live a lavish life in abroad using innocent Ethiopians back home as raw material for his hobby, which is making trouble for his ego.

I hope, the Ethiopia govt gets its sense and give the 35 individuals clear knowledge about being an Ethiopian through education rather than punishing them harshly. The Ethiopians enemies are/will be very selected Ethiopians living in Diaspora. The vast majority Diaspora is a very committed Ethiopian trying its best to promote his/her country and people using every opportunity.

I think the Birhanu kind Diasporas must be condemned. He was born and grown up in towns living relatively good life. There fore he has no right to interrupt those trying to have the life he had back then. Conflict will never bring solution. I think the Ethiopian govt need to give space and support to those opposition groups such as Ato Hailue party and others trying to bring positive change in Ethiopian in a peaceful way. One bullet kills a person. But the real value of one bullet can serve a dinner to one Ethiopian family if we know how to use it.

So, I totally agree with the govt tough move against those known terrorist organizations for own/partial purposes. But about G-7 being a terrorist organization? I don’t think so. If it is, the govt has a duty to teach the people not to join those individuals behind this group. As we know, Birhanu, Andargachew and the likes are city boys grown up in a relatively good life while the vast majority Ethiopians still have no electricity, water, sanitation and the likes. They driving cars in foreign country, the vast majority Ethiopian people walks on footpath road following donkey or carry goods on back, shoulder and head. They are flying on the air, the vast majority back home crossing the Abay Sheleqo on foot.

Any stupid who is born and grown up one of the impoverished cities or towns back then in the country with out knowing how the real life is in Ethiopian mass rural population will never get a chance to ruin my innocent people struggling life. Those growing up in cities and towns doing nothing while the rural children are grown up without electricity, clean water and any for of modern way of life, yet working hard in farms that are too backward and walks long distances are the real Ethiopians. They contributed and lived with the real Ethiopia from their birth until they finished study and moved to cities and abroad, too. These are the real Ethiopians, not those the money minds. The Gimat-7 (May 15 group) is confused and don't know what to say for the public, sometimes almost said they have planed a coup, in another they said they support any coup against this government and again in another they are saying the coup is fabricated, for sure there is something wrong with them.

The most funny of this group is the way they argue their points on the legitimacy of a coup in Ethiopia, one really wonders how is that they can be any different from the very government they blame for coming to power through a coup, how is that two wrongs can make one right, how is that one can talk about democracy with an anarchist mind set, how is that they can also be ligitimate after coming to power through a coup and what is the consequeses of a coup and what if Ethiopia end up being like Somalia...thninking many of this type of question i think the May 15 group are no less than criminals. An enemy of the Ethiopian poor people.
