Ed's Note: The article by The Daily record identified the Plaintiff as Dawit Seyoum of Nigeria, which appears to be a mistake. Based on his name, Dawit Seyoum appears to be either from Ethiopia or its former province, Eritrea.

Cabbie gets $305K verdict against MTA police

A Baltimore [Maryland] jury has awarded $305,000 to a former BWI Taxi Co. cab driver who was arrested — and later unsuccessfully prosecuted — after complaining to Maryland Transportation Authority police about a shuttle bus that was blocking his exit.

In the course of the April 2005 incident, Dawit Seyoum of Hyattsville suffered tears to his right bicep and tendons in that arm, leading to an impingement in that shoulder, according to his attorney, Cary J. Hansel III. The judgment, including economic, non-economic and punitive damages against the two officers involved, will allow him to undergo the required surgery, Hansel said.

I am sure it meant an Ethiopian immigrant...Whatever! A doctoral degree holder, but Cabbie, hmmmmm..
what a waste! had this man been back at home in his own country, I can imagine what he could have contributed to improve the life of teh poor farmer who paid to his bone to educate him! Sad mamma Ethiopia!

I think you see the world as black and white but in reality it could be Grey. Furthermore, life is not linear there are up and dawns in life.
You have to know that there are thousands and thousands of educated Ethiopians who reside in west but not happy and who may not be happy if they go back home too.

You have no idea how this former professor and civil servant in the US end up driving the cab. The professor knows better his situation than you know about his.

An educated Ethiopian in the US have little chance using his talent to make a career since most professional disciplines are run by extremists and hypocrites.
As a professor in the US you have to bring grant money several hundred thousands to your university every year in order to survive. While others may not need to bring this much if you are different from them if you can't make it you will lose your job easily. To get grant you need connections can this guy get one easily?

Why don't he go back to his country? Who don't want to be in his her country? As a respected educated man to contribute to his nation. Yes it is good idea. But the reality of Ethiopia today is not as inviting as it should be. He might not be from the privileged group as Ethiopia today is more of tribal.
In short don't simply judge some one without looking into the whole circumstances that led this guy into this.
By the way he is in his 60s and nobody knows what he have been through.

Congradulation big brother and same goes to your attorney.

At times, it pays to fight for your right. Only in America!
Even if it doesn't, we need to know our rights and protect it.

Don't learn life the hard way. Learn it from big brothers or sisters who knew better and who have been at that road before you.
It's rough out there brothers and sisters and don't go it alone.

Happy Thanks Giving to you all.

Observer For curiosity sake, I researched university central data bases but there is no record that this cab driver ever lectured in any university, period. Eritreans and Woyanes who lived in the bushes as fighters usually accord titles, such as: general, doctor, chairman etc. So please do not put your neck for the story. Do you have your own story to tell?
