Ethiopia, China sign agreement to build hydropower station at Genale

Source: Capital

Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCo) has signed a contract accord with the Chinese Gezhouba Group Company (CGGC) for the construction of Genale Dawa 3 Hydropower Project
When completed Genale is projected to generate 254 MW of electricity.

After Gilgel Gibe II’s tunnel collapse the corporation failed to fully meet the country’s power demand that stands at over 1,200 MW.

EEPCo’s current capacity is almost 1,000 MW of power from its six operational hydropower plants, including the recently inaugurated Tekezze.

The potential power production of the country has been estimated to be about 45,000 MW. Of this, only 870 MW has been developed and another 3,270 MW is under-construction.
Another new hydropower station, Beles, will be ready in May this year. It will have a capacity of generating 460 MW of power

Under-construction Gibe IV/V, Beko Abo (Caradobi), Halele Worabesa, Chemoga-Yeda and Genale have a combined generating capacity of 6,000 MW.

A budget of some 12 billion dollars has been earmarked for the nation’s 25 year Power Sector Master Plan of which 70 percent is allocated for generating power.

The Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCo) has signed a contract accord with the Chinese Gezhouba Group Company (CGGC) for the construction of Genale Dawa 3 Hydropower Project, located on the border of Oromia and Somali regional states.
The project will be constructed at a cost of 408 million dollars. It is expected to generate 254 megawatts of electric power.
A 110 metre high dam will be constructed on the Genale River. The project will increase the current national capacity of 870 mw by 27 percent.
The 254 mw hydroelectric station on the Genale River in Somali State, when completed in 56 months, is projected to generate 1,640 gigawatt-hours annually. The station will help the nation address seasonal power shortages and also contribute to a national program to export electric power while controlling flood damage and providing water for irrigation in Ethiopia.

This is really good news. God knows, this government makes many horrible mistakes. But they seem to be very serious about our energy needs. There are several projects under construction, but they can't be ready overnight. Warren Buffett had said once: "You can't produce a baby in one month by getting nine women pregnant." You still have to wait 9 months for each baby. I only hope, that they take their time and make it right.

There is people who call themselves
Ethiopians, but there are always angary
whatever is good for Ethiopia.
Now, our goverment is engaged in building dams. and that stratigicaly what Ethiopia needs. if you are realy
Ethiopian patriots not hypocrats,
Why you oppose the progress?
The only answer, we can found this
quetion is: Because the Males is a
current Prim Minister. You mean if you or your tribe is not in power, no anything good. and you will be anti-developement. that is not patriotisim. and you guys, you are not only people who has sole rights
to rule the country, you got your time hundreds of years. give a chance to ethnic groups. Males is
realy Ethiopian, he son of most ancient Axume.
Somebody is saying in above comments
"There is an empty signitures. let me ask you this question:
Are you telling us, that dams that
all its pictures was broadcasted is
fake. are there simple statues.
Let me say what I said before, you
bunch of Derg, your time is past and
never will came back and Ethiopia knows you. You can't hide a rising sun with your hands !!!!!!

@Ras Thomas, cool down, man. There are enough things to criticize about this government. It is true, that they are doing good job in tackling the energy shortage in Ethiopia. But they don't give adequate answers about the bidding procedures, environmental concerns, etc.... A government must be transparent and accountable. By the way, since you mentioned it: no government in Ethiopian history is more obsessed with ethnicity and tribal politics than the present one.

What is greatly admirable is the precision of delivery. It is lovely to watch the construction of one dam after the other. It is like watching a ballet. Such precision, such synchronicity, such timeliness, such reliability of delivery, how do they do it? Even the most advanced countries face some delay in perfoming such great projects. Please note that even prices for the most part stay as agreed upon. Rejoice, supporters as well as opponents.

This is infact a good steps and a sign of good hopes.
Let's not discourge for the good work steps that the federal government startes in those negelect and the most suffered region in the dabuub and misrak kifla hagarochji. These are the region ignored and undevelopend in many years of the past by those opporessive regimes ruled the country. This people of south and south eastern Ethiopians which never been reached of any goverments who had no tried to invest the regions before the Melese regime, except that pouring a thousands of military who occupied and kept condacting to pressure and opress the vivilians.
These ocupations of military never brought to local poeples for any developments instead, they were contributed of more problems such of robbery, looting and taking their properties by the gun force plus providing the all kinds of human abusives and crime atrocities against the local innoncent civilians.Unlike this woyane regime the past governments invested in these regions people memors their curel hate projects and that left for good.Their legacey in these region to remeber only a bad memors of there curel crimes and have no good things to remember.Melese were well of ware of that,so if he starts to leave it a better legacy I believe that he has now still a good chance to do it a betterment work and leave the post in good legacy which Ethiopians to remember him.

Therefore, its the first time in history Ethiopia government reaching these regions and start building the public infurstructure and the social devlomental service projects that lacked in many years.

What these region used to recieved from their government were the military occupations and nothing else, who were their occupied their lands by the gun force, opprssion, kilings and tortures of many civilians.

Now,inspite of that woyane regime still not the perfect regime and there, conducting many wrongdoings on the ground reality that in all over the country, specially in these region of the south/eastern states which that we knew the Melese regime could been done it for more betterments,BUT again, this is a wonderful job done for these outhren/eastern regions and for these region a such investment Melese already started,it's a wow and a bingo for these states of southern Oroms and the Somali regions.
of course, before that Melse regime came powers they never have the hopes from any Habasha leaders but Melse looks like disaproving that Habasha leaders are not all bads for the other Ethiopians. He looks like bringing the trust of other ethnic ethiopians WHEN he started of doing huge investment edevelopments in their neglected lands today.Of course he bring back their hopes of that trusting their country and the leaders of future Habasha once again.Because, unlike in those old regime's era,now they have the feelings that its repaired of their pride citizenship and started loving of their the new Ethiopia.

Also,it's there first times breathing the freedoms and that beeing a proud Ethiopians. They are the ones who are running their local adminstrations and they have their part in the federal members whom have the decission of where to head the reborn country of the new Ethiopia.

Thanks for the woyane regime! Please contiune the good work of developing those in many years negelted regions of Ethiopia.

At least, this kind of big project investments it will help in general Ethiopia and it will compenciate the locals, the most suffered region peoples of Ethiopias,in fact this is a great help for them.

Viva the united Ethiopia Federation era.

Wadani,

ONLF made huge crime against their own people to expose them to be suffered and killed by both parties, the rebels and Ethiopian forces. 19 years ago they should have compromised with EPRDF and be part of the Government or opposition and allowed the region to be explored for any resource it may have underground and exploited it. The Somali ethnic could have been better off today than aligned with Eritrea, Egypt and Libya and fight for their hidden agendas. Despite my strong opposition to Meles leadership, the current constitutions and ethnic federalism is the most favorable to all Ethiopian ethnics because they have the right to make decision based their own priorities in their states and implemented by their own elected people of each states. Any resources come out from any state has strong say how the resources allocated and the state is the main beneficiary unlike the old system does not allow any ethnic to know what is going on in their own backyards let alone to use the resources by their own people in their local communities. Most of the current oppositions want to bring back the old system divide the country by provinces and abolish the current constitutions and divided families in to many pieces like Somali region in to four or five provinces and diminish controlling your people and your say as one block of Ethiopia. If you are divided in to provinces your bargaining power is almost zero due to scattered your ethnic and speak as one voice to their wish to see implemented in their region. The current system does not allow anyone of the ethnic to be the boss of the rest of states and it is harder to anyone in power to divide and manipulate others unlike the old system disorganized in every provinces compare today, the current system every ethnic is organized and have their own local laws and elected officials at local and federal levels to speak and represent their constituencies.

My advice to ONLF is, it is not too late to come to the table and work peacefully to your beloved people within the system instead of working for Eritrea agenda on the expense of your own life and your people progress and development in your Somali region. The time is not favorable to conduct as guerrilla fighter to liberate any one around the world. Everything is timing and geopolitical conditions. During the 70th and 80th it was the most favorable for rebels because the West and East political divisions and like TPLF and EPLF exploited it and achieved what they want to achieve. ONLF does not have any chance what so ever to liberate Somali people from Ethiopia unless Ethiopia is disintegrated by unknown factors in the future. Even if Ethiopia unity disappears, for Somali or any ethnic it will be better to stay with the current system to run your own Government peacefully than in the forest to establish your own Government to start from the scratch.

Halafi Manged,

Thanks for the brilliant advice. My friend I do agree with you for many mistakes that we done but also, the TPLF were the once who had the majore responsibility of what went wrong. They committed many crimes against innoncent civilians for the excuse of onlf and Al itihad rebel movements. That was cruel crimes which fueled the choas in the region. In fact it manpowered the rebels and made onlf a popular and strong organization. You know better than me how rebels org work is,the more government killes the unemployed civilians is the more poeple would uprises against the regime and join the rebele fighting against regime.

You know better than me my fried since that you are from the north part of the country. So the woyane regime knew of their crime activity and killed recklesley of many civilian.tha's why I'm blaming them more than the onlf or any else in the country.
My friend,at begining the Somali Ogadenis were not infavoring any war due to they were returned from Somali refugee compas and were tired most of them whom simply needed from the govern repatiration programs. If that TPLF regime ignored the called onlf org in the 90s and start the social programs the people needed I swear none of the godens would be joining the rebels.Because the people have had no sympthizes for another rebel movements.

Having said that the onlf also, was 100% wrong at leat to vacate their offices and opt to live in the jangles.I knew for the first ten years, the onlf troops were very few and a equiped in weak weapons. They were on the run from the woyane foot solidiers chaicing them.Until that wayane started killing civilian on streets they never had the support of the puplic in both diaspora community and the local ogadenis.
So I knew what went wrong at the begining my fried and bothsides have the blames. Not only to be blamed the onlf org. However,we still have the chance and as you said never to late.

Thus,my friend there are a hard working Ogaden groups as well others ppls whom are very hardly working for peaceful solution endings the warrying of the region and hopefully so far, both sides were welcomed the initiative for peaceful reaching. The people of the region needs to settlement and both sides now look realizing the importance of the peace. The region has many resources, according to the report of international Oil/gas companies, they said the deposite oil/gas fuel energy in Ogaden is more than the middle east Oil and gases and not Ethiopia alone who needs that resources but its the world energy demand what also pushing the quik peace settlement in the region. Therefore,I believe its the time for the peace in the region and its time to benefit the demand of the world to sale our oil/gas resources to reach our poor peoples of Ethiopia purspority and stop begging the world donations.

Finally, there are an intelectuals groups and individuals from both sides that working very hard day and night until they bring both sides on table dailogs to reach a permanent peaceful solution.

Thanks again for your brilliant advices.Hey we should always support the peace for the horn peoples.the ppl of the HOA had enough suffered for the continous useles wars.

Peace for the Horn.!

It is not obsession, it is pure pragmatic thinking. By the way, we can build one new dam with china while repairing the other one with the Italians. It must not be done one after the other.
