Ethiopia: Christian street preacher slain by Islamic mob

Mar. 29, 2007 (CWNews.com)
- The Washington-DC based human rights group International Christian Concern (ICC) reports that Ethiopian Christian evangelist named Tedase was beaten to death by militant Muslims on Monday, March 26th, as he and two young women preached on the streets in the town of Jimma, Ethiopia.

This marks the second time in six months that Christians residing in southeast Ethiopia have been attacked and killed by extremist (Wahabbi) Muslims. ?

The attack came as Tedase and his companions were preaching on a street near a Wahhabi Islamic mosque. As the Christians passed by, a group of Muslims rushed from the mosque, catched Tedase and pulling him inside, where he was beaten to death.

The killing of the Protestant evangelist took place in an area where public authorities are almost exclusively Muslim, and have shown little sensitivity to the concerns of the Christian minority. Just six months ago, in September 2006, a mob of Islamic zealots burned down Christian churches and homes, leaving about 2,000 people homeless in the same region.

Oh may GOD! what is happening to Ethiopians? What is wrong with the Islamic community? We lived peacefully for thousands of years and now when they are growing in number they start killing people! I hope they will come back to their senses because this won't do anybody any good!

Growing in numbers? I thought Muslim were already majority in Ethiopia. Complaining about one individual being murdered? How about the majority of Muslim who have not been allowed to raise in place of powers?
Meles started the religion issue , after all we used to fight of tribes and nationalism. However Meles changed all that by bringing religion into play and he is getting what he has started.

This is the work of politicians who intentionally want to divert the internal turmoil and political repression. I don't understand why Tadesse and his evangelist collaborators went around the Mosque while there are many homeless and "Chat" addicts out there in the streets of Jimma if their intention was to save life. Tadesse was misguided. Sorry for his family. Religious leaders must respect each others' beliefs. Stay out of somebody else's business.

Christians go to Muslims and Muslims can route out Christians. The bible and any other faith would not allow to take humans life. If they didn't like the preacher as an individual, they could tell him peacefully in an understanding manner with respect. They don't have a right to kill somebody. That is a murder and it is a crime. If the government cannot uphold the citizen's right by law, it is too bad. There will be civil unrest there will not be law and order. What is the government's job? if there is a government at all!!!
Instead of rushing to go to Somalia and destabilize the Muslims,he should take care of the safety of the citizens. Eventually he will fall in own trap and history will not bail him out. Thats enough for now.
Tigistu, you need to think and rethink about basic democratic rights of freedom of speech. Unless otherwise the preacher did not offend the Muslim religion or any Muslim as an individual, he he has the right to go and preach anywhere he wants. He did not trespass into the mosque, or he did not offend any body in a form of antagony. I think that must be a public street not in particular given to the mosque. You need to be careful not to be prejudice. Any, it was a crime and who ever did it should be liable.

This is just a jaw-dropping set of events we started to witness lately. Someone better do something about these Islamic problems.

Dear naciima,
It is disturbing and sad to see that you are instigating for the path that is inhumane, barbaric, and un-islamic.

The only way to peace in Ethiopia is to acknowledge that we are ONE family (brothers and sisters) regardless of religion and race. Christianity and Islam are two chapters of the same book and God is the Author.

Given the fact that everyone has the choice between peace or war, construction over destruction, and terror over friendship, the sooner we recognize and understand the Godly way the sooner we enjoy peace and prosperity. Otherwise our suffering prolongs (sadly).

If local authorities are Muslims and do not respect the law, what are the notoriously rough federal police doing? They should go to such areas and knock out any group that is committing crimes in the name of religion. Wuhabism should not be allowed to take roots in our country. It is not a religion; it is a terror cult. Muslims should practice their religion peacefully. So should Christians. Sometimes, Orthodox Christians show unnecessary hostility towards evangelical Christians. Nobody has any more rights than anyone else to practice their religion. Everybody has the right to practice whatever he/she wishes as long as it does not violate others' right.

Thats is not surprising.

The Wahabis are just doing what their Allah and Mullah tell them to do.

I have always said that the Moslem's god requires his followers to die and kill for him while the Christian God died for all.

But again we have a government that creates a fertile ground for this problem to grow and spread for its own dibolical and political reason. Unfortunately, we are heading towards a never ending religious disharmony our country has never experienced before.

Although there is nothing that can possibly justify this crime, the victim shouldn't have started preaching the bible at the doorstep or near the place where people blindly accepted that the Quran is the only right book in the world and murderer of non-muslims or animals as extremists say it will be rewarded with tens of vergins in the heaven. Does the bible say preaching God's word near a mosque is more rewarding or holier than doing it some other place where people are eager to listen it? Probabily he, the victim, was looking for it, that is "sacrificing" his life while spreading "God's word". We all should know the lines! Christians wouldn't feel good if they see a Mullah saying his words from the quran infront of their church.

i still find it "unswalowably hard" a person to be killed for his political, ethical, theological, moral, or/and philosophical view. Religion is made multi extracts. A mob or a contract killing is just an awful, awful crime to an idealist preacher.

I dream to see a free space to a political discource!
I dream to see a free stage of theological preachers.
i dream to see free speakers corner to free ethiopians
i dream, dream and dream to see gentle ethiopians.

What is hapening?

Where is lost your patience Ethiopians, in the field of Theology, Politicas and Ethics? Where is gone Your Manliness (wone)? Fighting a man feast with feast.

let's not be blinded by faith instead see in it, in depth its hidden crosssections and the things that it contains and the extracts that it is filled with and the world that contains it and the spheres that wrap it.

Respect humans. Religion is just second to humans. Religion is made to comfort 'poor souls' or loners, humans not the other way around. We Ethiopian have been there before the monoetheist religions have arrived on our Thousand plateaus. I don't know what kind of religion will grap us, but we will be there...

It was perhaps a 'mistake' the preacher to preach close to a mosque, but it was a bigger 'hellish' mistake to beat and finsh off the man.

The story is completely incorrect. Muslims did not kill this criminal. He was not a preacher .. day light criminal who defilled the Muslims's prayer and their worshipping place, ... it is less a justice if such a person is spared from meeting his ultimate destiny. The incident was reported on Negashi blog a day earlier.

The grand Mosque of Jimma town - Fatih Mosque - attacked two days ago (26.03.07). At the time of the attack, Muslims were standing for Asr (afternoon) prayer. The assailant entered the Mosque with his shoes on and began attacking Muslim and disrupted their prayers. He was caught and beaten by the congregation. Some among the congregation intervened and took the day light criminal to hospital.

During this happening the microphone of the Mosque was open and the disturbance in the mosque could be heard from far. People who were believed to be on waiting to join him in his criminal act had fled away with out being caught. Police arrived later on and calmed the situation.

The assailant died later while receiving medical treatment.

hey guest,

which part of that story says that the guy has committed suicide or has been killed by the government after the court has sentenced his death? i am not saying the report by Negashi is accurate or true, but even after many thoughts to cover up the crime, it still has failed to creat any sense of doubt to a reasonable mind that actually this man has forcefully entered to disrupte the prayer of muslims in their own mosque. Even if that is true, no one has given you the right to beat the alleged "criminal" to death. there is a place where justice can be served, whether you like it or not the land has, though imperfect, its own accepted rules and regulations. There is one thing true, this man, be it a preacher or an offender, has been murdered inside a mosque where spirituality shall be practiced, and anyone that has perpetrated shall be punished by the rule of the land! Ethiopia aint Darfur where you can rape and murder citicizens.

Brother Tades died conveying the truth the Good News of Jesus Christ. such a loving faith is a Gift of God and a few chosen get this honor. He is in a better place where those who killed him shall not enter. The Lord said he is the Son of God or God incarnate. To state it in brief, Jesus Christ is revealed as the Fullness of the Godhead the infinitely merciful Saviour of sinners. In the Gospel of john the it says For God so loved the world he sent his only begotten Son, so that who so ever believes in him shall not perish. He did not ask a finite man to call him prophet or any thing less. He did not allow any other to define him, he said I Am the truth and the life and no body comes to the father except through me.
In the book of Revelation the last book is written In chapter 1 in verse 1, 2. "God permitted him to reveal these things to his servant John in a vision; and then an angel was sent from heaven to explain the vision's meaning. John wrote it all down== the words of God and Jesus Christ and every thing he heard and saw the book contains 22 chapters. In the last paragraph it is written:
"...Outside the hose who have strayed away from God, and the sorcerer's, and the immoral, murderers, idolaters, all who love to lie... I Jesus have sent my angel to tell you all these things. I am the bright Morning Star... I solemnly declare to everyone who reads this Book: if any one adds anything to what is written here God shall add to him the plagues described in this book and any body any part of these prophecies, God shall take away his share in the tree of life and in the Holy City just described. He who has said all these things declares: Yes I am coming soon!"
Amen! Come, Lord Jesus Christ be with you. The grace be with you all. Amen

I think it is high time for the government to take serious action against extrimist elements. I think the country is not lawless? Whether the individual is criminal or preacher (wherever he does his preaching), mosk gangs are not the ones to judge his actions and kill him. If they say he is criminal or didn`t like his actions, they should understand that it is a lawfull country; they should present their case to the responsible body in a lawfull maner, if they are to be lawfull citizens. The government needs to take serious actions against such gangs. The government is going all the way to Moqadishu to clean up somebody elses trash, while the same, if not more serious trasjh is accumulating within its vicinity.

The Ethiopia we know is a country where well mannered muslims, christians and others coexist. Some extrimist gangs of any religion, who are so blinded by their religious belief to the extent of taking somebody`s life should not be left alone to destruct such coexistance; a coexistance we used to boast about as a role model.

Peace be upon you all guys.
It is a very sad story for all of us muslims and Christians to hear this unholy actions and reactions, fighting on religious line. Civilized societies dibate problems and issues. Not slaughter one another in the name of religion or ideology.

God Almighty, Allah, has given us brains to weight our thoughts and do the right things. Unlike some seem to believe Islam does not give any one any right to take lives with out due process and just law. Just like in Christianity also in the Quraan,'to save one soul is like saving the world and to destroy unjustly one soul is as if who ever does this destroys the world.

If we dare to judge something or some one we better make sure that we knwo what we are talking about. It is not an easy matter to talk about rights and wrongs about religeous issues. If act irresponsibly as most commentators here do, we will only make bad situation worse. Hatered is the greatest enemy of mankind. Late us not let it loose and create coes among our people. The right thing to do is bring the criminals who masacre people who differ with them in their openion of things or ideologies. All those who support this kind of situation and do not believe in the law that is governing at the time should be punished properly. To build up a gang attitude in the society and worsen this is a criminal act. Let us all act in very responsible way. There could be groups and individuals who have their own agenda, like poleticians who want some kind of diversion from themselves, even if this means many citizens masacering one another. They will intervene as law and order authorites and people will curse one another for half a year after that, but will develop unnecessary hateful environment against one another for a long time. Besides this incedents may multiply. Late us think, use our heads and not give the enemies of the Ethiopian people a chance to destroy us.

Coming to some irresponsible comments here about Christians hosting muslims, let us please not talk about things that we do not have knowledge about. No religion has originated in Ethiopia, except may be ideal worship, like every where in the world. Christianity came to Ethipia from the middle east in the fourth century so did Islam from the same area in the seventh century the time it appeared in the world. Ehiopia did not wait four centuries to learn about Islam, just a few years. In both cases some one came with the message, and the then Abyssinians chose to accept it, neither the jews came hear to multiply Christianity nor the Arabs. It is the Ethiopians who either because the kings and chiefs accepted the religions and the masses followed or genuinely got the feeling and accepted it. We have interesting stories where people were baptized in hundreds with out realy knowing what the religion is all about except that it is 'bedefenaw' God's message. The same with most muslims who did not get to learn the basic of their relgions but took the responsiblity or fighting to defend it as a just and true message from Allah. Either due to lack of resources or facilites, most of the priests (abe nefes) and shekhs have little knowlege about their religion or are confused. They pass this unclear feeling of religion adding their own 'melamit' to their followers. My understanding is that the Ethiopian people have always respected educated people. However, the s cakked 'educated' people, priests and shekhs are not trust worthy. Most of them are poor individuals whose messages include the technic to take advantage from their 'children in God' for their daily bread.
Please let us learn history and know our society better before we become the judges about what we hardly know. Let us not talk out of hate for others, it will only destroy us. Both Christianity and Islam came to Ethipia for the benefit of who ever want to be part of it by choice. No one is the guest nor host. Think about it. Do you want to call the Oromo's second citizens because they moved from the southern part of today's Ehipia to the north upto Mekdella(noth Wollo) and to the west in what is Wollega and Illubabor today and to the east what is Arssie today? Not with your right minds. Muslims in Ethipia or Abyssinia accepted Islam in the seventh century AD(CE). When they did this they were in the hightlands of Abyssinia, Affar lands, Yefat and todays Wollo. What religion you choose is everybodys choice and business. Who have to learn to respect one anothers choice and leave in peace with one another, that way we live and let live withrespect and dignity and proper together. Their are a lot of other good things we can do together as citizens of Ehtiopia. We must learn to live by the rule or the law and make good laws that we want democratically in our parliament. Things will change. Dictatorships will give way to the rule of law, insha Allah.

All, have a good night,or a good day and have sweet, positive dreans for yourselves and Ehtiopia.

What happen Bro?

Over the time reading most of the comments you posted, I was really impressed by your progressive thoughts. This time I am terrified. with out time or place limitation any one can preach his beliefs as long as it is peaceful. This just a given period.

Growing up in Addis Abeba, I have seen muslims doing their daily prayers right under the nose of Christian Worship places. The unique thing about our country was THE TOLERENCE BETWEEN RELIGIONS, WE ACCUSTOMED FOR CENTURIES. And, until now Ethiopia is entertaining both religions with out a single incident. So, why do you think it is now necessery createing a border for one to preach his/her beliefs?

My concern is, if this sentiment expands to the extreame, it will certainly add the fuel in to the racial division handed to us by TPLF. Then imagine the picture my friend.

Such acts were very common during the former regimes primarily among the "Chritians", whereby the Coptic (Ethiopian Orthodox) mobs and clergy attacked Pentes and Jehova Witnesses. Time has now changed, thank God. All Christians should stand united in their faith and advocate for peace with the Muslim compatriates. The message of Christ is that of love and humility, not hatred, pride and war.

May God bless all Ethiopians, Muslims, Christians and others alike.

"The unique thing about our country was THE TOLERENCE BETWEEN RELIGIONS, WE ACCUSTOMED FOR CENTURIES."...elcad,

I agree with that, but what is tolerance to you my friend? preaching words in the bible near a mosque especially in a town where islam is the main religion is provocative. Yes, we have lived side by side for cernturies peacfully except for the few recorded confrontations, but that does not mean a pastor can go to the doorsteps of a mosque and start qouting the bible or an imam can start preaching words of the quran in the sacred place of my church. Each of the religion followers have their own respective places to practice their religion and worship whomever they want. Preaching the bible near a mosque has a message which can be interpreted by any muslim as saying Islam is wrong and the way to hell, Christianity is the only way to heaven. By any standard that is simply provocative and disrespectiful, and demanding tolerance and respect in this situation is naive. I know the inflamatory words, the competition, the street preaching and other provocative ideologies are not part of our culture though, they are the creation of the arabs and western missionaries. Both the Mullahs and the crussaders must be stoped.

Moslems collaborated with Hitler to wage a genocide on, over 6 million Jews during the Second World War, Moslems gave to Hitler their Quran so that he could copy and write "My Battle". Have you heard of any Jew who went kill Christians or Moslems, or destroy Churches or Mosques? Never!
Islamofascists never stopped joining the forces evil to spread Islam by the sword; the City of Jimma was developed on the Awetu River by Italian Fascists in the 1930s. At that time, with the goal of weakening the native Ethiopian Church, to humiliate proud Ethiopian Orthodox Christians, the Italians intended to make Jimma, alongside Harar an important centre of Islamic learning, and founded an academy to teach fiqh.
The five years of infidel atheist Italian rule in Ethiopia were marked by an effort to enhance Islam and, as far as possible, to represent it as identical to Arabism. This was done in the tradition of divide-and-rule in Ethiopia proper and through propaganda in the context of Arabia. Hundred of new mosques were built throughout the country, including the great Al-Anwar Mosque in Addis Abeba (Mussolini personally saw to its completion) during the fascist occupation of the country. The fascists made Arabic the official language in four provinces. In general, the Italians helped Moslems discriminate against Christians in all respects. Many people including the clergy resisted the occupiers, priests were massacred, church leaders were executed, many churches were destroyed.
Now, 60 years later, we witness Moslems slaughter Christians, and set their Churches and holy places on fire. We expect, the worst is yet to come. How many times must Christians forgive the atrocities and barbaric acts of Moslems? Ahmed Gragn transferred the soul of fellow Moslems into darkness for several centuries by killing Christians and destroying their treasure. Again, the did it during the Italian occupation. Now, they want to continue killing unarmed peace loving Christians because they want to see the whole world accept their Allah. They do it in Indonesia, in the Philippines, In Thailand, in Egypt and Nigeria, they intimidate populations and civil organisation in Europe and America with every available means to extend their domination beyond Arabia.

Brothers and sisters, dear followers of Mohammed, we all are here on this planet to learn something valuable from this world, but Islam is impeding you to acknowledge the fact that violence does not pay, and violence specifically in the name of religion will never pay. Can't you see that your religion is the most brutal and peace hating religion of all? Every country in this world has problems and difficulties with its Moslem population due to this aggressive nature of yours. You show the same degree of aggression and brutality like all those Godless infidels that this world has breed. It saddens me that a thinking human being is unable to see what is so evident -- that Islam distorts and destroys the essential goodness that we all aspire to.
Come join the children of God and learn the Truth and learn how to speak it, our Moslem brothers and sisters. It will set you free of the bondage, which cuffs you to an existence of fear. You better try to avert your self-destructive course in life before it's too late.

Thanks,

Your opinions are somewhat devisive and hateful.I have never heard of Hitler collaborating with Arabs. As far as we know he was a christian. It does not mean all christians are responsible for his cruel acts.

Balageru,

Qeld ti-wedaleh messel? It is ok now and then. As for the outfoxing somebody with a knowledge out of a dictionary, I am not sure if you can succeed with that. Dictionary is a supplementary and helpful reference to give some unknown words “meaning”. It can only complement information acquired from subject books. Be it as it may, as my old friend Lekim would put it “in the spirit of sharing”; if your question is genuine, assalaamu alaikum is Arabic and means peace be up on you. Excuse my ignorance, but I have hart time believing that you do not know the answer to your question. If you allow me to tell you what the best source of outfoxing information is, then I say, it is the “challenges you face in life”. Time is my enemy these days. I can not contribute as much as I want to. Hope, things will slow down soon. So, qeldegnaw Balager, be cool, keep teaching, and learning.

Assalaamu Alaikum

“…i still find it "unswalowably hard" a person to be killed for his political, ethical, theological, moral, or/and philosophical view. Religion is made multi extracts. A mob or a contract killing is just an awful, awful crime to an idealist preacher…”..M.T

Dear M.T.,

Just who the f**k do you think you are fooling by such righteous indignation about the killing of one Christian by a Muslim mob in Jima? You and your TPLF traitors in tandem with the Eritrean Shabea have been working on this for over a generation. You have been working hard to divide my motherland, ETHIOPIA, along ethnic, religious, language and cultural fault lines and the current TPLF constitution is a monumental testimony to that.

It just makes me sick when a little TPLF prick like you finds it OK to mow down mothers and school age children in the streets of Addis, but "unswalowably hard" when one Christian is killed by a Muslim mob in the streets of Jimma. Oh by the way, I am a Christian and don’t find it "unswalowably hard" at all by the fact that the preacher was killed; after all this was the design of your TPLF masters and their lackeys like yourself all along right?

Did you really mean it when you say stuff like:

“I dream to see a free space to a political discource!
I dream to see a free stage of theological preachers.
i dream to see free speakers corner to free ethiopians
i dream, dream and dream to see gentle ethiopians.”

GET STUFFED YOU TPLF PIG!

Cheers,

-Gundan

This is really a sad story .In the first place one should'nt be killed for preaching religion whether a muslim, christian or any.The purpose of religion after all is to save not to kill .In most of the koran ,the pharese 'Allah ,the compassionate ,the merciful ....' is quite common. It is also ones right to live and this right was given to any one by God and No one should take it.It is not goosd to be extremists whether muslim or christian. How can one imagine to go to heaven after killing his brother or sister.Dont fool yourself. Both Christian and Muslim Scholars are respnsible and have obligations to teach their community. In sprituality think of not cruelty and barbarism.Think of the grave effect Taddesse's death bringth to his family and worst if he is the bread winner.Think of your own child, brother or father ,sister, wife or mother before you are boiling to kill.Dont do things on others which you dont like others to do on you.

It is a shame to here from many of you approving a killing of a human being; it could be a brother to anyone of you. He was standing on the street...free to the public, he didn't force himself to go inside the mosque...think about it, isn't Ethiopia his birth place? Isn't Jimma part of Ethiopia? How does anyone justify a killing for a person's God given right to speak in a public place? Who gave a right to these Muslims to kill? If people are approving these acts 20 or 30 years from now people who are not following the teaching of these groups will be dragged from their homes and will be killed...it is a shame for anyone to approve any killing of an innocent person whether it is for preaching.... preaching is a freedom of speech...it is every human beings God given right to exercise....no one should be killed for a speech. if people don't like the speech just ignore and go your own way...you don't have a right to kill or approve a killing

those who approve these, if they had a chance they will also kill because out of our heart comes evil thought and out of that evil thought follows an action to kill...those who approve such a heinous crimes are as guilty as those who murdered this innocent person....we all going to answer to God some day for all of the evil thoughts in our heart and mind...search you heart and your mind for your motivation before you put them in words...I believe those Muslims who denounced the killing are more sincere than the other Ethiopians who are mainly Orthodox Christians (just by name) because they don't even know one of the ten commandments "you shall not murder".
